those rare bodies of water that offer the “Northern Grand
Slam” – the chance to catch northern pike, walleye, Arctic
grayling, and lake trout on one outing. And it can all be
done with a fly.
“We see the number of fly fishermen growing every year,”
said lodge manager Duane Kurbis. “It's turned into a
popular sport, and we're happy to accommodate anyone
who wants to try it out.”
People come from all over to try their hand at the
Northern Grand Slam. Colorado resident Dave Coulson is
the very definition of a master fly fishermen. Coulson ties
flies commercially, teaches classes in everything from ice
fishing to aquatic insect identification, edits the site
www.fishexplorer.com, and has even been known to stop
spontaneously on his way home from work and offer his
help to inexperienced anglers. In short, he is the man you
want to have on your next fishing expedition.
In June 2010, Coulson flew into Arctic Lodges for eight
days of good food, a little luxury in the remote northern
reaches of Saskatchewan, and some great fly fishing. Did
he make the Northern Grand Slam? Even better: on his
fourth day, Coulson pulled up six species of fish: Arctic
grayling, northern pike, lake trout, walleye, sucker, and
whitefish.
of the best freshwater fisheries they will ever encounter.
At more than 160-km long and 400-ft deep, Wollaston
Lake teems with northern pike, lake trout, walleye, and
Arctic grayling.
Wollaston Lake Lodge offers a host of services, from
great lodgings to fly-out opportunities for even more
remote and spectacular fishing areas. But Wollaston Lake
is also a fly fisherman's paradise. Experienced guides will
help ensure that you get the most out of your fly fishing
experience, whether you are simply curious, or a veteran
of the sport.
Be warned, though: once you find yourself battling a
leaping northern pike with a fly that you have carefully tied
yourself, you may never want to fish any other way. If you
hit the Northern Grand Slam on Wollaston Lake, you have
bragging rights that will last you forever.
For Coulson, though, the real joy in fly fishing in northern
Saskatchewan is more than the numbers of fish caught or
the thrill of catching a 41-inch northern pike. He will tell
you that the people are what make fly fishing in
Saskatchewan so special.
“The people are the reason to come back,” Coulson said.
“I've visited several [lodges] over the years, and Arctic
Lodges is the best I've been to. Not just because of the
facilities, but because of the people.”
Arctic Lodges isn't the only northern outfitter that caters
to the adventurous angler with a love of fly casting.
Situated at the mouth of the Umpherville River, Wollaston
Lake Lodge offers anglers the opportunity to explore one
“Fly fishing is definitely addictive,” laughs lodge manager
Craig Blackmur. “About 25 to 30 per cent of our guests
are regular fly fishers, and we encourage anglers to try it
out. People really enjoy it.”
