Building the new
High-tech treasure hunting
along the Palmetto Trail
While exploring the history and
beauty of the Palmetto Trail,
visitors can also take part in
a high-tech outdoor treasure
hunting game — geocaching
— that is played locally and
around the world. Free and
fun for participants of all
ages, geocaching combines
location-based gaming, social
networking, treasure hunting,
GPS navigation and outdoor
recreation.
When geocaching, players try to locate hidden containers,
called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then
share their experiences online. Since its launch in 2000,
approximately 1.4 million geocaches have been hidden
around the world and found by more than 4 million people.
The Palmetto Trail is home to several different geocaches,
including a popular geocache known as “All Hands on Deck.”
The hard-to-find cache includes a hint — “your two fingers are
the key” — and requires a bit of creative thinking to locate it.
Once found, the traditional geocache includes a logbook that
contains information from the owners of the cache and notes
from visitors. The cache also includes small trinkets for trade.
Those who find the geocache may take one of the items in the
container, but are encouraged to leave something of equal or
greater value in its place for the next
geocacher to find.
Additional geocaches along the
trail include micro geocaches — small
caches that can be harder to find
and often include only a logbook. The
coordinates for each geocache along
the Palmetto Trail are available online
at www.geocaching.com, and after
each adventure, participants can log
their finds online and share tips and
other information about their overall
experience.
The rules of geocaching are
simple: 1) If you take something from
the geocache, leave something of
equal or greater value; 2) Write about
your find in the cache logbook; and 3)
Log the experience online.
adventure.
