German yards must seek
orders for specialist ships
The time when German yards
can construct container ships
is finally over and new markets
in specialist shipbuilding
must be developed rapidly, a
report presented during the
SMM said on Wednesday.
Competition from Asian yards
is now so tough that no new
container ship orders can be
expected for German yards,
said the report from Bremen
University’s economics institute
IAW commissioned by
German trade union IG-Metall.
“There will only be new orders
for specialist ships,” said Jutta
Blankau, head of IG Metall’s
coastal region. “Construction
of container ships in Germany
has ended for good.”
New concepts must be found
to help Germany’s shipbuilding
industry to convert to a
new focus on specialist ships,
Blankau said.
Other countries were also
facing the same problem
is transferred from Europe, Japan
new yards in China and other
low-cost countries, said Heino
Bade, shipbuilding expert at IG
Metall.
“Japan is giving its shipyards
help to construct the prototypes
of new vessels which can
be of enormous importance in
bringing a new type onto the
market,” Bade said. “Prototypes
of new designs are needed for
new sectors such as offshore
wind farms. They could be developed
and offered to customers
with the help of state support.”
“Governments already do
this with new types of aircraft
and there is no reason why it
should not be done with shipbuilding.”
Professor Rudolf Hickel of the
IAW institute stressed that in
past years container shipbuilding
had been core work undertaken
by German yards. “The
capacity adjustment will be
brutal but needs to be covered
by specialist shipbuilding,”
Hickel said.
No German yard has won a
container ship order for the last
two years, the report said. Only
three years ago, orders for 35
vessels were won.
In the past year, German yards
had won orders for one cruise
ship, two specialist tankers,
four ferries and roro vessels
and two mega-yachts. Other orders
were for inland waterways
ships and other specialist vessels.
The yards also have naval
shipbuilding orders.
In 2011, only four of Germany’s
42 shipyards are likely to work
at full capacity, the report estimated.
German shipyards were having
trouble gaining bank loans to
finance newbuildings, Hickel
said. This meant some recent
orders for specialist ships had
been awarded elsewhere.
One example was the order
for a new type of vessel for
Plates
construction of offshore wind
farms from German ship owner
Beluga, he said. “This was an
order for a complex, specialist
vessel which was perfect for
German yards,” Hickel said.
“Instead the order for one vessel
was placed in Poland and
the other two in China, basically
because German yards
could not secure finance. Action
needs to be taken to help
yards finance specialist vessel
orders.”
The global shipbuilding industry
was facing over-capacity
of about 50 percent following
huge expansion in many
newly-industrialised countries,
Hickel added.
The top two shipbuilding
countries China and South
Korea were giving major semihidden
support to their yards,
especially through help with
finding finance.
“This means that prices for new
ships are not being settled by
the market but by the impact
of government intervention,”
Hickel said.
RWO’s CleanBallast system
receives type approval
RWO, a leading supplier of systems
for water and wastewater
treatment aboard ships and
offshore rigs, has received type
approval for its CleanBallast
system. RWO has developed
the only commercially available
German manufactured
and type-certified ballast water
treatment system, which
has been successfully proven
in operation.
Because of the increasing
negative impacts of alien marine
organisms transported in
the ballast water of oceangoing
ships, the International
Maritime Organization (IMO)
spent many years working on a
The CleanBallast system has so
far been ordered for more than
40 plants
Ballast Water Convention. This
convention adopted in 2004 is
aimed at preventing the unintended
transport of microorganisms
in ballast water.
The CleanBallast technology
developed by RWO was refined
over the years and extensively
tested under real-life conditions.
Even under extreme conditions,
such as high sediment
concentrations, CleanBallast
exceeded the IMO test requirements.
In addition, the efficient
removal of the sediment
considerably reduces tank
cleaning costs and prevents the
loss of valuable loading capacities.
The system, consisting of
a mechanical filter process and
a special disinfection unit, has
so far been ordered for more
than 40 plants.
Many years’ experience in
treating water and wastewater
aboard ships and offshore rigs
helped the Bremen-based company
in developing the modular
system. The CleanBallast
system, which can operate not
only in sea water but also in
waters with a low salt content,
is offered for various capacities
and assignments and both for
systems, which already
enable us to implement the
loading and discharge of ballast
water in conformity with
Loges, Dr. Holger Janssen and Joachim Flecks
“The shipping market
will remain volatile”
The shipping industry has shown significant
recovery. But despite this, the crisis
and its resolution are themes of hot debate
at the SMM. In the trade fair halls, Daily
News reporters met three specialist visitors
from the Global Shipping Division of
the UniCredit Bank AG and used the opportunity
for a discussion about the current
situation in shipping and shipbuilding from
the viewpoint of a leading ship financier.
All three of you are looking very relaxed.
We want to use this opportunity to ask you:
Is the global crisis in the shipping industry
which so many have spoken of now over?
Dr. Holger Janssen, Head of Global
Shipping: This question cannot be definitively
answered at the moment. But for
many ship owners, the first half of 2010
was at least considerably better than expected.
A large number of the container
ships which had been laid up are now back
in operation, especially the large vessels of
over 7,500 TEU. We still advise a cautious
outlook and do not want to spread a rash
sense of euphoria. The shipping market
will remain volatile. Independent of the
shipping crisis, which is still a theme to be
dealt with, we see new and promising markets
for example in the offshore sector. Our
bank is involved in this sector with a significant
volume of loans which have been
made worldwide.
Ingmar Loges, Head of Sales Global
Shipping: The maritime industry displays a
high speed of change even when it is under
“normal” conditions. The crisis and
its impact have increased this speed even
further. Just dealing with this high speed
of adaptation creates an enormous challenge.
Another factor is that shipbuilding is
still confronted with high capacity. For the
market participants this means: We must be
even more flexible and react to a changing
operational environment. Another factor –
which also applies to ship finance – is that
we need even more individual, tailor-made
solutions to deal with special concrete
problems. But the SMM is a good forum to
discuss these issues and to seek solutions
together.
Joachim Flecks, Research Global Shipping:
Some people may have thought that
larger container ships suffered especially
from the crisis. I have heard in the market
that some major liner shipping companies
are inquiring in shipyards about construction
of mega-large container ships. The talk
is about 16,000 TEU vessels. This would
be a new record and would be a clear sign
that ship owners are again expecting rising
transport volumes.
What especially attracts your attention when
you come to the SMM?
Janssen: Naturally our first wish is to meet
our customers. I am also interested in the
new technical developments in shipbuilding,
especially for even more efficiency gains
and for lower emissions of pollutants.
Loges: But we are also seeking contacts
with shipyards here. We do not only finance
ships, we also advise shipyards and we are
currently doing this in Germany, Poland
and Norway.
Noske-Kaeser agrees
strategic partnership
with Wenker
The Hamburg-based shipyard supplier
Noske-Kaeser GmbH yesterday agreed
a strategic partnership at the SMM with
Wenker GmbH & Co. KG, based in Ahaus,
for the equipping of Wenker’s Klima-Liner
accommodation modules. Noske-Kaeser
will now undertake the system construction
of the air conditioning and cooling
technology.
As part of the strategic partnership agreed
at the SMM, Noske-Kaeser will as a Wenker
technology partner deliver the ventilation,
air conditioning and cooling equipment
for the Klima-Liner room modules. These
modules can be used in a wide range of
applications from cabin units on a cruise
ship to multi-storey accommodation
and working areas. The supplier package
includes construction, layout of the systems,
delivery of components and introduction
into operation. “We are pleased
at the trust that Wenker has given us, especially
in the time of insolvency,” said
Rainer Olbricht, Key Account Manager at
Noske-Kaeser. “This strengthens our confidence
and confirms our competitiveness.”
The air conditioning system specially built
for the Klima-Liner has a construction form
and layout which creates a high energy efficiency
and has an especially low-noise
ventilator.
The Klima-Liner is a module which is fully
equipped and so can be assembled and
put into operation rapidly. The modules
are pre-assembled and can be stacked up
to six high. They are also available in up to
four star superior accommodation standard.
With a room length of 7.2 metres,
breadth of about 3.3 metres and a height
of about 2.5 metres, the Klima-Liner offers
great potential for individual furnishings.
The modules are so constructed to permit
easy transport by road and by sea.
They have a high level of heat and sound
insulation. Special units are available for
shipbuilding. The sandwich units can be
used for the internal fitting out of crew and
passenger cabins and come in a wide rage
of colours and styles.
The external walls are available in zinc
galvanised steel plating or PVC film. “The
Klima-Liner proves that functionality and
lifestyle do not contradict each other but
instead offer a perfect combination for a
living space,” said Franz Leers, Managing
Director of Wenker.
SMM Daily News | marine equipment
“A real test for Europe’s
shipbuilding industry”
“As new and urgent issues
emerge, such as climate
change and energy efficiency,
safety shall be maintained and
developed as one of the cornerstones
of EMEC’s policy,” said
Jaakko Eskola, President of the
European Marine Equipment
Council (EMEC), in an interview
for SMM 2010.
Eskola describes the current
economic climate as “a real test
for the European shipbuilding
industry,” adding that “EMEC is
optimistic that the market situation
will slowly improve.” He
emphasises that in the medium
term, research and development
and innovation, backed
by flexible business models and
new ways of meeting market requirements,
can enable Europe
to stand up successfully to increasingly
fierce global competition.
European companies can build
on their development successes
in green technologies, where he
feels that European suppliers
definitely play a leading role.
“Among the challenges lying
EMEC President Jaakko Eskola
ahead, greening of transport is
one of particular relevance for
the industry. The technological
developments of ‘green’ marine
equipment are already far
advanced to meet the targets
being set by regulators and it is
here that we can consider ourselves
as technology leader.”
The EMEC President believes
that if technology already in
existence could be integrated in
today’s ships, this would make
them 15-20 percent greener
and cleaner, adding that further
new technologies could
Photo: HMC
increase eco-friendliness by 33
percent in the not too distant
future. He feels it is essential
for Europe to maintain its abilities
of interdisciplinary thought
and integrated understanding
of complex technologies. Keeping
European know-how is essential
to ensure that European
industry remains competitive
and always one step ahead of
its competitors.
Indispensable elements are
high-end and combustion
technologies, management
and conversion of energy, and
green/clean technologies. “Although
it can be manufactured
abroad, the ideas behind them
need to stay in Europe,” he
said. Development efforts for
improved environmental and
safety characteristics have to
continue, says the EMEC President.
For the near future he expects
further tightening of the
regulations, especially for SOx,
NOx and CO 2 emissions.
In connection with the offshore
market and offshore
technology the EMEC President
reverts to his demand that
safety always has to come first.
The spill in the Gulf of Mexico
can only teach the global maritime
community a lesson. That
is “to ensure that all the partners
involved, in technology,
process and practical application,
have to give their best, to
ensure that a disaster like that
does not happen again.” He
stressed that it was also important
to promote the standardisation
of equipment, allowing
it to be used on any ship in any
situation, regardless of who
built it.
Three
questions to…
Rasmus Stute, Head of Department Ship
Newbuilding Offshore Service Vessels,
Germanischer Lloyd.
Offshore installations are very much at the
centre of attention at the moment, especially
offshore wind power units. These will
create a rising demand for offshore service
vessels. What is your assessment of this
market and its potential?
According to a study from the institute for
trend and market research Trendsearch,
current logistics capacity is hardly sufficient
to cope with the expected growth in offshore
wind energy. What could be the reason for
this in your opinion? It is especially German
yards which are surely predestined to
handle the high-standard of construction
for specialist ships but which are also currently
urgently seeking new orders.
Stute: Rising interest can be clearly seen,
but it’s a very young market. There is a
large number of new design approaches
and we will have to wait to see which
concept establishes itself. For installation
vessels, a tendency towards some specific
types is now being recognised, such as
self-elevating units with own propulsion
for example.
Our assessments show that the planned
offshore windparks off the European coasts
create a demand for 15 to 20 installation
ships alone. Worldwide we expect a demand
for 40 to 50 installation ships as China and
the U.S. will soon be entering this sector.
In addition there will be a need for 200 to
300 service craft, such as crew supply and
service and maintenance vessels.
Stute: Just because offshore windparks
get planning approval it does not mean
that they will be built immediately. Many
questions are still unanswered, such as the
energy-technical networking, needed for
the feed-in to the national power networks.
Therefore many investors are still quite reserved.
The development and construction
costs for offshore service vessels should also
not be under-estimated. Currently there is
often simply a lack of investors prepared to
be active in this unknown sector. But I believe
that we will see more activity in the
coming two years at least off the German
coast. Under Germany’s Renewable Energy
Law, renewable power providers starting operations
by 31 December 2015 will receive a
guaranteed payment of 15 cents/kWh. Many
Offshore expert Rasmus Stute
Photo: GL
renewable power providers will not want to
miss this business.
But unfortunately this does not necessarily
imply that the offshore service vessels required
will be built in Germany or elsewhere
in Europe. Some German yards are challenged
in gaining bank guarantees which are
needed to secure construction pre-financing.
This is different in South Korea. In specialist
shipbuilding, South Korean yards do not lag
behind German yards on quality. But prices
offered by South Korea are not very different
compared to European levels in this sector.
However, there are also other countries, for
example China, Dubai or Singapore, where
offshore projects are also being undertaken.
The tendency is towards self-elevating units like this installation vessel from Beluga Hochtief Offshore
What kind of experience does Germanischer
Lloyd have in the offshore service vessel sector?
Stute: Overall, the development, construction
and the classification of these vessels
are a very complex regulatory subject. For
this work, classic maritime performance is
linked with other demands, such as from the
oil and gas industry.
Photo: Beluga Hochtief Offshore
Just imagine, a self elevating unit is at the
same time a floating hull and a fixed offshore
installation if its lifting system is anchored
to the sea bed. Germanischer Lloyd,
as a classification society, offers much more
than its extensive experience in the maritime
sector. With GL’s business segment oil & gas
GL Noble Denton we have been active as a
technical service provider for the oil and gas
industry. We have now combined this experience
in our own department for offshore
service vessels and have published new rules
for the classification of offshore service vessels.
Currently we are supervising about ten
newbuilding and re-building projects in this
sector. These include self elevating units for
wind turbine installation purposes, anchor
handlers, cable laying barges and vessels, as
well as supply and maintenance vessels of
diverse types.
SMM Daily News | offshore installation
Voith equips ships for offshore
wind park installation
In 2012 two specialist ships will be
launched in Dubai by the yard Lamprell
Energy for Norwegian shipping company
Fred. Olsen Windcarrier. They are the
first vessels of this type which will each
be fitted with three Voith Schneider Propellers
(VSP).
The vessels will be about 131 metres long,
39 metres breadth, have a propulsion
capacity of 11.4 MW, will have a 5,300
tonne maximum load, a work deck of
around 3,200 square metres plus an installation
crane which will be able to lift
loads of up to 800 tonnes. These are the
core features of the two identical heavy
lift vessels, which will be delivered in
May and September 2012 from the Dubai
yard of Lamprell Engergy. Their core
role will be the transport and installation
of offshore wind energy units, especially
in the North Sea.
High capacity and manoeuvrability are
two decisive demands on the specialist
ships. This is why Fred. Olsen decided
on a solution with Voith Schneider Propellers:
Three VSPs provide propulsion
and exact positioning and will give the
major ships a service speed of 12 knots.
A typical feature of these heavy lift vessels
are the four jackup legs, which can
be lowered onto the sea bed. They can
then be used to jack up or lift the ship
up, so creating a stable working platform
in the ocean. For this process, the lifting
vessels must hold their position very precisely.
This is where the advantages provided
by the VSP in direct interplay with
the dynamic positioning system become
clear. The propulsion can be changed
in only three seconds. This prevents an
otherwise unavoidable drifting from position
caused by the sea swell. The exact
moment when the ship lifts itself out of
the water is also especially critical. In this
In 2012 the new heavy lifting ships Fred. Olsen Windcarrier will be launched
transformation phase of the lifting operation,
the VSP provides significantly better
thrust than horizontal propulsion concepts.
The VSP also makes a simple hull shape
possible. The ships can so be constructed
in a specially-effective streamlined form
which also has a positive impact on fuel
consumption and emissions. A further feature
of the lifting vessel is the intelligent
Voith Roll Stabilization (VRS) system. During
difficult weather conditions – which are
a part of daily work in the windy offshore
windparks – the VRS reduces the rolling
movement of the ship.
The North Sea counts among the most
windy regions in the world along with
areas such as Cape Horn on the southern
tip of South America. For 90 percent
of the time there are wind movements in
the North Sea of more than four metres a
second. This makes commercial electricity
Photo: Fred. Olsen Windcarrier
generation from wind power units feasible.
Power generation from the open sea
is about 50 percent higher than from wind
units on land. This efficiency advantage is
creating more favour towards use of offshore
windparks for electricity generation
along with the advantage that landscapes
in the countryside are not spoiled by large
numbers of wind units.
Second prize for
ORCA in business
start-up award
Full programme for ORCA
Maritime GmbH: The Hamburgbased
anti-corrosion specialist
was after a busy day as an
SMM exhibitor yesterday also
awarded second prize in the
Hamburg 2010 business startup
awards. In the award ceremony
with over 600 guests
from business, industry and
press, ORCA won a tight contest
for the prize following an
unprecedented second round
of voting. The award was presented
by the mayor of Hamburg,
Christoph Ahlhaus.
First prize was won by a hearing
aid company. Over 22,000
firms from the Hamburg region
had competed for the award.
ORCA’s current joint chief executives
and owners Manfred
Haack and Michael Sens bought
the company in 2008 from its
previous Norwegian proprietor
and then put the firm through
a fast period of expansion. The
number of employees has risen
from two to eight and “the
trend is upwards,” said Haack.
Certificate
A European-wide network of
over 30 representatives was
built up and this network now
promotes the company’s expertise
and activities in over 60
countries.
The ORCA HT self- adhesive
anti-corrosion film is said to be
unique in its field and has been
certified by classification society
DNV for maritime corrosion
protection. “We have revolutionised
the conventional surface
protection concept which
uses paint,” said Haack:
In the mid 1980s, the marketing
of self-adhesive films for
mega-sized logos on ship sides
was started. After several years
these logos were repaired or replaced
and it was noticed that
the areas covered by the vinyl
had hardly any corrosion compared
to the rest of the ship.
On basis of this discovery it
was realized that this might be
a new way to fight corrosion.
Extensive research, development
and testing began, resulting
in a new solution for corro-
“The film offers great advantages
such as an extremely long
service life of up to 15 years
plus total environmental protection,”
he said.
The company is seeking to replace
almost 14 years later, the film is
providing excellent protection
even in the highly-sensitive
window areas, said Haack.
Convinced at the effectiveness
of its film and encouraged by
the initial success, the company
is seeking new ways forward
advantages in the film
for German industry and has
provided the company with
financial support for research.
In cooperation with the Fraunhofer
institute in Rostock, the
two year research project FokiS
(film corrosion protection in
shipbuilding) was started under
which the film will be intensively
investigated.
A further trump card in the
company’s hand could generate
an “absolute world revolution”
says Haack. Together
with an industrial partner and
institutions from research and
technology, ORCA Maritime is
currently developing an antifouling
film which does not
contain poisonous chemicals
or toxic substances. Similar to
a shark’s skin, a film will be developed
with a special surface
structure. “The film has been in
the test phase for almost one
and a half years and the initial
results are very promising,”
said Haack. He is extremely
optimistic: “We are still a small
company but everyone started
in a small way and we believe
we can convince everyone!”
Hatlapa presents its rotary
vane type steering gear of
type Triton at SMM. After
extensive research and development
at Hatlapa’s headquarters
in Germany, Triton
was first introduced onto the
market two years ago. Since
then over 40 units have been
supplied to ship owners all
over the world.
“We are currently focusing on
further developing our rotary
vane steering gear, and a revised
design will be launched
soon, focusing on the offshore
market”, announces Hatlapa’s
SCR System from the expert
silencer
4
Offshore Sales Manager, Uwe
Nickschat. The various types
of steering gear offer a range
of different benefits, depending
on the operational requirements.
Triton’s major
advantage is its compact design.
“Saving space on board
is an important factor in the
offshore industry,” Nickschat
states. Also, compared to ram
type steering gear, the rotary
vane equipment offers greater
manoeuvrability by allowing
a better steering angle.
Composite superstructure
for more capacity
At SMM 2010 three companies will jointly
present the Composite Superstructure
Concept (CSC). The concept enables operators
of passenger and freight vessels to use
lightweight sandwich composite materials
for a superstructure while still complying
with the SOLAS regulations.
is built-in and the finished superstructure
will not rust or corrode.
CSC has lower environmental
impact than steel
or aluminium
Key operational benefits of the concept In addition CSC has a lower environmental
impact than steel or aluminium and is
include: Higher payloads, increased stability,
reduced fuel consumption and lower equally suitable for both newbuildings and
through-life costs. Other features of the concept
include the fact that compound curves structure Concept is a high strength, light-
retro-fits. Basically, the Composite Super-
system that comprises a structural core to
which glass or carbon fibre skins are securely
bonded using an industrialized and
proven resin infusion process.
The final stage is the application of a fire insulation
layer to the laminate surface to provide
the required level of fire protection. A
full fire testing programme has already been
undertaken to prove the concept. By varying
the core and skin thicknesses, a fully integrated
superstructure (decks and internal/
external bulkheads) can be designed and
engineered which exactly meets global and
local loading conditions.
More than 35 years experience
of design and construction
of composite ships
The Composite Superstructure Concept
is a joint venture between the shipyard
Kockums AB (a member of ThyssenKrupp
Marine Systems with more than 35 years
experience of design and construction of
composite ships), DIAB (a world leader in
composite core materials and technology)
and Thermal Ceramics (a division of Morgan
Crucible which is a significant force in
the world of fire protection and insulation
systems).
All three companies have been heavily involved
in the multi-faceted, governmentsponsored
LASS project, the aim of which
is to improve the efficiency of marine transportation
through the usage of lightweight
structures.
SMM Daily News | in a nutshell
Finnish interior and accommodation
builder Oy Shippax Ltd is
introducing a revolutionary new
method of building accommodation
areas onboard ships and
offshore platforms. The solution
is based on macro-modules and
a patented Fixcel steel sandwich
structure applied to erect
fully outfitted and functionally
complete accommodation
towers. The Fixcel sandwich
structure is constructed from
hot-galvanised steel profiles using
triple seam rolling technology.
No welding is needed. The
structure has excellent corrosion
and fire resistance properties,
is lightweight, strong, rigid
and 100 percent recyclable.
The cabin modules are fully finished
Photo: Shippax
Novel accommodation
solution from Shippax
In the patented multi-storey
marine construction solution
both the cabins and the
entire accommodation tower
are self-supporting and do
not need to be surrounded by
a separate steel structure. The
cabins are fully finished at the
works, assembled into larger
modules and blocks of de-
sired sizes and finally hoisted
onboard the hull under construction.
The new technique is more
cost-efficient than conventional
shipbuilding methods,
the company says. Shippax’s
macro-modules containing
cabins, passages and balconies
are finished in factory
conditions, well protected
from the weather and other
undesired interference. The
industrial manufacturing also
cuts the lead-time and the
capital expenditure.
The high structural efficiency
of Fixcel modules allows the
desired free deck height to be
achieved with a construction
elevation less than the conventional
requirement. Low
weight and centre of gravity
enables one or more cabin
decks to be added resulting
in higher earning potential of
vessels including cruise ships.
The fire resistance together
with the load bearing ability
has been successfully tested
by VTT, the Finnish technical
research centre. A single
cabin can provide two hours
of fire integrity protecting the
surrounding structure against
severe damage and loss of
strength.
US$ 600 million on new
oil tankers
Indonesia’s state oil and gas company
Pertamina said it plans to spend US$600
million on new oil tankers in the next
three years. Pertamina will order the
new vessels to modernise its ageing
fleet and rely less on charter tankers
from foreign shipping company. Pertamina
currently operates 190 tankers,
including small and medium-sized vessels,
most of which are chartered.
“We plan an international tender to
order three tankers of 80,000 dwt capacity
in September. These tankers will
be used to carry crude oil,” a Pertamina
spokesman said. “Other small capacity
tankers will be ordered from a local
Indonesian shipyard,” he added. He said
Pertamina still plans to order a new
very large crude carrier (VLCC) tanker
of 300,000 dwt, but that it will not be
ordered until 2013, so that the delivery
coincides with the completion of Pertamina’s
new Balongan refinery expected
in 2016.
In August this year, Pertamina signed
a preliminary agreement with Kuwait
Petroleum International to build a new
refinery in Indonesia with capacity of
200,000 to 300,000 barrels per day. This
will generate a new transport requirement
for crude oil and oil products.
28 shipbuilding contracts
since 1st July
China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding said
it has won a total of 28 shipbuilding
contracts with a total value of about
US$915 million since July 1 this year.
The orders are for containerships and
dry bulk carriers, which will be scheduled
for deliveries from year 2011 to
2013.
Out of the 28 contracts, 5 contracts
worth about US$127 million have been
formally added to the order book after
the yard receiving initial deposits from
the shipowners. Another 15 contracts
with the value of some US$490 million
will be effective upon receiving the
initial deposits from the shipowners.
The remaining 8 contracts worth about
US$298 million are options to be exercised
by the shipowners. Yangzijiang
added that since July 1, it has delivered
13 more vessels. It said, in total, the
group has delivered 35 vessels so far
in 2010 and will deliver 13 more vessels
as per scheduled for the rest of
the year.
New VLCC crude oil tanker
for US$ 100 million
Hong Kong shipping company Wah
Kwong Maritime Transport has signed
a letter of intent with China’s Shanghai
Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding to build
a 319,000 dwt VLCC crude oil tanker
worth almost US$100 million. The deal
was signed after Wah Kwong took delivery
of its latest 177,000 dwt very large
iron ore and coal carrier. Executives
from the shipping firm are negotiating
with at least one other shipping company
to form a possible joint venture before
a formal contract is signed for the
tanker, which should be established in
mid-September. Potential charterers will
also be approached to take the 319,000
dwt tanker when the ship is delivered
in 2013. It is envisaged that Wah Kwong
and its shipowning partner would share
the cost of building. It is hoped an initial
charter contract that would guarantee
employment for the ship upon delivery
can be finalised before the building contract
is signed. Wah Kwong chairman Mr
George Chau Sze-kwong said he remains
“optimistic about the tanker market”.
He added that more ships would
be ordered “when the price and delivery
was right”, though there would be cautious
expansion of the fleet.
