10 Gothic Architecture Gothic architecture is known for its highly decorative nature and intricate designs. The Gothic style lasted from the 12 th century to the 16 th century. The term Gothic was coined, not after the Goths but because it was seen as grotesque and barbaric. Gothic was a term for something new and foreign. 11 Gothic Architecture The highlights of Gothic architecture were the pointed arch, the ribbed vault, and the flying buttress. The Gothic style emphasized openness and light. The supports of the building became clustered columns, pointed vaults and flying buttresses. Gothic cathedrals often had one or more towers. The pointed arch was used for the purpose of supporting ceilings of different shapes. This enabled architects to raise vaults much higher than was previously possible.
