Most ca<strong>the</strong>drals of <strong>the</strong> Middle Ages are in<br />

<strong>the</strong> form of a cross with <strong>the</strong> longer piece<br />

going from east to west. The Altar was<br />

usually in <strong>the</strong> eastern end. The shorter arms<br />

of <strong>the</strong> cross are known as transepts. The area<br />

away from <strong>the</strong> altar is called <strong>the</strong> nave. The<br />

nave goes from <strong>the</strong> front entrance to <strong>the</strong><br />

altar. The area behind <strong>the</strong> altar is referred<br />

to as <strong>the</strong> choir. It is called <strong>the</strong> choir because<br />

<strong>the</strong> chorus would sit <strong>the</strong>re.
