6 Layout of Cathedrals Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, Nantes, France, built in the 13 th century Most cathedrals of the Middle Ages are in the form of a cross with the longer piece going from east to west. The Altar was usually in the eastern end. The shorter arms of the cross are known as transepts. The area away from the altar is called the nave. The nave goes from the front entrance to the altar. The area behind the altar is referred to as the choir. It is called the choir because the chorus would sit there.
7 Layout of Cathedrals Behind the choir is the ambulatory. This is an area that usually has several chapels for quite worship. The word “ambulatory” is from the root word amble which means to walk. The ambulatory was often a quiet place to walk in thought and prayer.
