Editorial
What’s in this issue of ScotsGay?
editorial
Something unremarkable happened in New York on 27th June
1969, an event that had taken place a thousand times before
across the United States of America. The police raided a gay bar.
But this time the drag queens, butch dykes, fags and
prostitutes fought back. Thirty-eight years ago…
Our annual Pride day commemorates a North American
series of riots, which began in a Mafia run gay bar called the
Stonewall Inn.
‘We are the Stonewall girls
We wear our hair in curls
We wear no underwear
We show our pubic hair...
We wear our dungarees
Above our nelly knees!’
News of this fight back reverberated across the planet. To
many, this is when the modern gay liberation movement was
born. So to all the drag queens, transsexuals, dykes, poofs,
queers and everyone else who paraded, protested and partied at
Pride Scotia – we salute you. We hope you enjoy the Pride pics
on our centre pages.
Meanwhile in Russia, this year’s Pride event turned into… a
riot. As we rightly congratulate ourselves on achieving some
form of equality back home, many abroad are not so fortunate.
Indeed LGBT people all over the planet suffer torture,
imprisonment and death. In this issue, John Murphy looks at
the plight of Eastern European gays and asks ‘What is to be
done?’
Also this month, Jodie Fleming poses some challenging
questions about the butch/femme dynamic in the lesbian
community. Stephen Mathieson interviews Amjeed Kabil, author of
Straightening Ali. Tony Challis thinks about Christians and Blair. And
we have all the scene reports from across Scotland including a
bumper section from the Granite City with our new girl Lexi Lush
and our old friend from g-zone, Andi Watson.
Oh, and in case you haven’t noticed, we are now in colour…
The 8th annual Borders
barbeque was held on the
first Saturday of June. 24 people attended,
mainly from across the Borders, but with
Scotland’s four biggest cities represented. The
good weather prompted a couple of participants to
go swimming in the River Tweed, while the rest
enjoyed the sun. The event was followed by
afternoon tea at a nearby flat, and a night-out in Galashiels.
During the barbeque £160 was collected in
sponsorship money for WaterAids Munro Challenge.
Worldwide
news from
Rex Wockner
on page 20
Ah, what a wonderful world we gays
and lesbians live in here in the UK!
Every major town and city
throughout the land offers us a
choice of bars, clubs and gay/gay
friendly restaurants and hotels (as
well as magazines) are springing up
like daffodils.
The summer, as always, sees a
plethora of Pride marches as we
celebrate our sexuality and – more
importantly – debate the worth of them
and their place in the Twenty First
Century. And how we take all this for
granted folks. What would our life be
like without our local gay scene,
however much we moan and bitch
about it? What would we all do without
our local on a Saturday night in which
to drink, chat and cruise? However, do
we really appreciate what we have on
our own doorstep and, love them or
hate them; do we simply take for
granted our right to walk in Gay Pride
marches?
It is worth remembering that not
too far from us our gay and lesbian
cousins in many Eastern European
countries simply do not have these
opportunities. The fall of communism
and the break down of the former
Soviet Union has seen democracy
granted to millions of people - but
unfortunately, it seems, only if they are
heterosexual. Civil liberties and basic
human rights are being denied to many
gays and lesbians, and those who
demand them face violence,
intimidation and sometimes prison
sentences.
On 27th May this year, protesters
from around the world marched
through the streets of Moscow in
Russia demanding equality for gay
Muscovites and their right to hold a
Gay Pride March. This was the second
year such a demonstration had taken
place, and once again it descended into
violence and mayhem as peaceful
protesters were attacked by anti-gay
extremists. The police were accused of
doing nothing to protect them and
when an Italian MP, Marco Cappato,
demanded police protection it was he
who got detained!! British gay rights
Let’s start to appreciate
how lucky we are to have
the choice about Gay
Pride marches
veteran Peter Tatchell was beaten and
detained by police and “Right Said
Fred” singer Richard Fairbrass also
came under attack suffering head
injuries.
Ironically, being gay or lesbian in
Russia is not illegal and it was
decriminalised in 1993 and an equal
age of consent is also in existence.
However there are no equality laws in
place and over the last few years many
gay bars and clubs have frequently
come under attack culminating in
many of them being blockaded in May
2006 by anti-gay protesters, where yet
again the police were accused of
refusing to take any action against the
protesters.
The Mayor of Moscow’s decision to
ban Gay Pride marches was upheld by
the courts and Russia’s Grand Mufti –
the head of the Islamic community –
stated that if gay rights protesters took
to the streets they should be flogged
“any normal person would do that” he
stated. Charming!!
Sadly Russia is by no means the
only such country, or indeed the worst.
Gays and lesbians in Poland face a
major dichotomy with, on one hand, a
lively and thriving gay scene in many
cities but on the other many
government officials and the Catholic
Church being vehemently opposed.
This objection is currently reflected in
Polish society where a staggering 89%
of the population state they consider
homosexuality an “abnormal activity”!
In 2004 and 2005, cities such as
Warsaw and Krakow banned Gay Pride
marches, and since the election of
Warsaw’s mayor Lech Kaczynski as
President, many Western European
countries have expressed their concern
about the gay and lesbian community.
Already the President has stated that he
is not happy with gays becoming
teachers and has voiced his opposition
to gay and lesbian marriages calling
them “unnatural”. As in Russia, the
difficulty with voicing opposition
comes with the fact that homosexuality
was decriminalised in 1932, although
the protection of individuals on the
grounds of sexuality was not added to
the constitution after objections, once
again, from the Catholic Church. Even
more worrying are plans by the Polish
government to introduce laws similar
to our own infamous “Section 28”
which would ban any discussions on
homosexuality in the country’s schools.
Needless to say this has been strongly
backed once again by the Catholic
Church!!
Latvia joined the EU in 2004 and
was the only country within it without
legislation specifically outlawing
discrimination at work on the grounds
of sexual orientation. Agreeing to
introduce such a law was originally a
condition of Latvia’s joining the EU but
MPs refused to implement it in full
after a heated parliamentary debate
where homosexuality was described as a
sin and homosexuals as “degenerates”.
The country’s biggest political party,
The Christian Democratic Party, were
the leading opponents of this and were
backed by leaders of the country’s
Lutheran church. However in Sep 2006
the country’s president, Vaira Vike-
Freiberga, refused to pass the country’s
Labour Code unless protection for gays
and Lesbians was added. Perhaps a sign
of progress at last! I visited Riga, the
Latvian capital, last year and the gay
scene is tiny and a good twenty to
thirty years behind our own. Riga is the
only town in the country with a gay
scene and there are very few public
figures who are openly gay. Indeed
many Latvians still live with beliefs
from its Soviet past and refuse to
accept homosexuality in themselves or
others. Many still hold on to the Soviet
opinion that homosexuality and
pædophilia are linked phenomena - a
belief that has been increasingly
exploited by various religious leaders
and politicians. A survey carried out in
Dec 2006 found that within Latvia only
12% of Latvians supported same sex
marriages and a mere 8% backed same
sex couples’ rights to adopt. (Within
the EU as a whole the figures are 44%
and 32% respectively)
The European country with
possibly the worst gay rights record
however is Belarus where attitudes
have refused to move on from its Soviet
past. A recent survey found that 47% of
the population thought that all
homosexuals should be imprisoned and
no laws to protect gays and lesbians
have ever been passed – the only laws
which mention homosexuality are to
prosecute and not to defend. The
In Moscow... British gay
rights veteran Peter
Tatchell was beaten and
detained by police
country’s President Lukashenka is
arguably the most anti-gay leader in the
whole of Europe and has accused the
USA and EU of “spreading sexual
perversions here”. Since gaining
independence there have been an
alarming number of anti-gay crimes
reported to LAMBDA Belarus (the
country’s LGBT group) which have
included the murders of many people
who were known to be gay. The owner
of one of the country’s few gay clubs
was also killed and many of the leaders
and founders of
LAMBDA Belarus
have themselves
been tortured and
raped and their
homes and offices
have been
ransacked! Internet
cafes and libraries
have blocked access
to gay and lesbian websites and
even the country’s Universities
have banned the discussion of
LGBT rights. Police officers
have been accused of failing to
investigate attacks on the gay
community instead focussing
on gathering information and
pictures of those accused of
visiting cruising areas. Belarus
is believed to have the highest
suicide rate in Europe amongst
gays and lesbians and psychological
help and counselling is not readily
available.
Similar anti-gay attitudes are
reflected in many other Eastern
European countries – though
thankfully nowhere near as vitriolic and
hateful as in Belarus. Gays and lesbians
in Ukraine are constantly battling for
equality in their country where only
15% of the population agree with the
existence of same sex couples. Their
president, Viktor Yushchenko, has
however openly supported gay rights so
changes are hopefully coming here. In
nearby Lithuania gay rights groups
have increasingly come under attack
from various youth organisations with
links to the major political parties with
the Lithuanian Gay League being
described as perverted and having to
face demands for its closure.
Progress has been made in many
other countries however. Romania in
particular has been praised by Human
Rights Watch and named as one of the
top five countries for combating rights
abuses based on sexual orientation.
Estonia has passed legislation
protecting gays and lesbians in the
workplace and they are also free to join
the country’s armed forces.
One of the saddest and most
frightening results of such rampant
homophobia is the increase of
HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe.
According to UN reports the disease is
spreading faster there than anywhere
else in the world and it is reckoned that
more than 1% of the population are
infected. However many experts believe
that true figures may well be five times
higher than this but
that efforts to fight
this alarming
spread are being
hindered due to
rampant
homophobia. On
16th Jun Elton John
played a free
concert in Ukranian
capital Kiev to raise awareness about
HIV/AIDS in a country where it is
reckoned that there is one new case
every ten minutes. Sadly his concert
attracted wide spread criticism from
the country’s religious leaders because
of his sexuality. “Elton John is gay and
we don’t want him promoting that
kind of lifestyle here”, said the leader of
The Union Of Orthodox Citizens of
Ukraine.
So is there anything we can do to
support the LGBT communities in
these countries and change the
opinions of many of the others? Well
we can write to our MPs, MSPs and
MEPs and demand that all parliaments
attack countries who deny basic civil
rights to their citizens. We could also
contact the embassies of these
countries and ask them to explain their
country’s attitudes. A lot of these
countries are also desperately trying to
attract visitors to boost their tourist
trade so this gives us two choices. We
could either show our support to gays
and lesbians by refusing to visit such
countries or we could visit them and
raise the visibility of gays and lesbians
there.
Now I am not suggesting we all go
en masse to Belarus and march through
the streets of Minsk demanding
equality (too dangerous!) but by
meeting locals from other places we can
show them that we are not deviants, we
are not a threat but that we are – like
them – human beings who deserve to
be treated accordingly!
In the meantime let’s celebrate what
we do have in our own country. The
next time we moan about our gay bars
and clubs and what they offer
shouldn’t we spare a thought and be
thankful we do have them and can use
them safely? Similarly start to
appreciate how lucky we are to have the
choice about Gay Pride marches and
rallies and be grateful that we live in a
country that allows us the opportunity
to take part in them or not!
Butch/Femme - Reclaiming Our Pride
by Jodie Fleming - dedicated to Dawn, my handsome Butch
feature
>>>
Jodie’s
Edinburgh
Scene report
on page 24
Once upon a time lesbian identity
was pretty much a binary concept –
you were either butch or femme. But
now women who identify as butch or
femme find ourselves a minority
within a minority, a dirty word on
the tongues of the hettie-pleasing
andros who dominate the lesbian
community. But enough is enough!
It’s time for us to stand up and
reclaim our place in lesbian society,
time to stop closeting ourselves all
over again for fear of displeasing the
lesbian community which we were
instrumental in creating.
At one time butch-femme was
considered the norm among lesbians,
and deviance from these identities was
stigmatized. Women who didn’t fall
into either category were deemed
‘confused’. Butch and femme women
created a dynamic together which was
passionate, alive and most of all proud.
Now we have a generation of dykes
emerging who are scared of the words;
the whole concept of butch-femme is
shrouded in shame and lesbians who
do identify as such are scared to fully
explore this dynamic. Just how did
lesbians go from being more empowered
and independent to enforcing andro as
the norm?
Instead of being respected and
revered for being a vital part of the
origin of the gay liberation movement,
life for a butch or a femme in the
lesbian community now can be made
impossible. Butches in
particular can’t even go to the
toilet in a gay bar without
being made to feel like freaks.
Biting comments from
pathetic little L-Word
wannabees and even worse,
pseudo-lesbians, about ‘this
being the women’s toilets’… mini
Alex-Parks-lookalikes who
recoil in disgust if a butch so
much as looks in their
direction …. They look at this
beautiful person who fights
so hard against
discrimination in the hettie
world, and decide that they
no longer belong in the gay
world either. How fucking
dare they? How dare they
make us ashamed to be who
we are?
It makes me so sad when I
hear baby butches calling
themselves ‘trannies’ and
‘camp bois’, and I feel like
grabbing them and
screaming, ‘No, you’re not, you’re
butch! Be proud of it!’ But the pride
just isn’t there anymore, so the whole
thing becomes reduced to a comedy
farce. Gone are the days of butch
mentoring and positive role models –
Butches can’t even go to
the toilet in a gay bar
without being made to
feel like freaks
most young lesbians haven’t even heard
of Horse, and their idea of getting
dressed up is sticking an extra belt over
the jeans hanging half way down their
ass.
So exactly how did our perceptions
go awry? Well it began when part of the
radical lesbian feminist movement in
the 70’s and 80’s dismissed butchfemme
culture as politically incorrect.
A particular strand of ‘extreme
feminism’ believed a butch-femme
lifestyle was an attempt to replicate
heterosexual gender roles, though this
argument is severely flawed. This is a
hetero-normative assumption in itself,
basing its argument on heterosexuality
being the norm and all other forms of
sexuality being only weak imitations of
it. Butch-femme need not be an
imitation of anything – it is a unique
dynamic incomparable to any other
lifestyle.
Extreme feminists failed to see that
butch-femme was part of a defiance
that forced these women to stand out
in the 1920’s and 30’s, when lesbians
were otherwise invisible. Rather than
mirroring heterosexual relationships,
butch-femme was an evolving forum to
the resistance of male oppression.
Butch-femme women enjoyed a rich
and fulfilling sex life at a time when
sexual expression was not the norm for
women.
Radical lesbian feminists concluded
that butch and femme appeared to have
something to do with male and female,
creating a knee-jerk reaction which
attempted to abolish this unique
lesbian construct. What they didn’t
take into account is that the male
sexual role certainly does not define its
goal as the giving of sexual pleasure to
women, whereas the butch role most
certainly does. Males take, whereas
butches give. And far from being
passive and accepting, femme women
define what they want, what they need
and know how to ask for it. Butchfemme
roles essentially turned
heterosexuality on its head.
In pushing for total equality, radical
feminism believed that everything had
to be equal and that included sex. Both
women had to enjoy and perform the
same sex acts equally, to initiate
equally, always making sure that one
partner wasn’t more dominant than the
other. I’m sorry, but I thought being a
lesbian was about two women enjoying
each other, and there are many ways of
doing this! You don’t have to enjoy the
same acts or initiate the same for it to
be real lesbian love. There’s this
expectation that we each become
powerful and equal in exactly the same
way, but this is just not true. Instead of
idealising a relationship with no power
differences, surely it’s better to embrace
these differences. There is after all no
way you can keep a relationship of any
sort power-free! When two people
exchange energy, they’re inevitably
passing power back and forth.
Radical lesbian feminists’ response
to the political climate of the time was
to strengthen their visibility, and to do
this they felt they all had to look the
same. They required an identification
that allowed them to become a group…
and from this, androgyny was born.
Gender-neutral hair and clothing were
adopted, and all feminine finery was
discarded. And it was considered very
un-PC not to subscribe to this!
Lesbians who wanted to wear clothing
other than androgynous items were
criticised and shown the error of their
ways, and risked vanishing into lesbian
obscurity if they didn’t modify
themselves accordingly.
A big criticism of femmes was, and
still is, that we get the best of both
worlds, that femmes who are able to
‘pass’ as heterosexual get to enjoy the
privileges of looking straight along with
the pleasures of loving women. This
however is an incredibly simplistic
ideology. Passing personally makes me
feel like I’ve got rats crawling all over
my skin, as if I’m some unattached
filthy het. Passing is denial, and I didn’t
‘come out’ just to hide in the closet all
over again. It makes me so angry when
anyone dares to ‘assume’ I’m
heterosexual on a superficial basis.
Anyone who does purposefully pass as
heterosexual must surely pay a very
high emotional price for concealing
who they really are.
Femmes are ostracised by the
lesbian community both for loving
butches and rejecting this ‘andro’ look
which has somehow become the look de
jour for both hets and dykes alike.
Andros take it as a personal insult that
femmes don’t find them attractive, or
indeed aspire to that look themselves.
And then there’s the barrage of stupid
questions. ‘Why do you fancy women who
look like men?’ ‘Are you secretly
heterosexual?’ As a feminist and proud
heterophobe, I find both those
questions very insulting. For those who
take the time and attention to look at a
butch woman, really look at her, you’ll
see a softness that is anything but male.
A butch is still a woman. She’s just
not a feminine woman. Butches may
wear masculine clothing and keep their
hair short, not because they want to be
men, but because they are expressing a
different way of being a woman. Rather
than attempting to replicate traditional
masculinity, butches present a
challenge in their rejection of how a
patriarchal dominated society has
decided a woman should look and act.
The epitome of true feminism, butch
women defy the world! Butches are a
beautiful example of how women don’t
have to be vulnerable to be valuable,
that you don’t have to be pretty to be
attractive, and that you can be smart
and strong and loud and other women
will find this irresistibly sexy and
appealing When are we all going to
start realising and believing that again?
Gay people nowadays though are so
depoliticized. They’ve fallen hook, line
and sinker for a
heterosexual ideal of female
attractiveness and shut out
anyone that they consider
doesn’t fit into that box. It’s
all been so easy for us now
to be who we are, to live our
lives as gay women,
compared to what it was
like for women 50 years ago
and that’s a big problem.
This means people don’t
question themselves or their
belief systems anymore.
We’ve adapted and
compromised; we’ve sold
our souls to the hetties for
their acceptance to such an
extent that there are now
‘acceptable’ and
‘unacceptable’ ways of being
gay. And being butch or
femme is now apparently unacceptable!
The saddest thing about rejecting
butch-femme in our community is that
we’re losing a part of our diversity;
we’re losing a different way of loving.
The butch-femme dynamic is one of
strength and beauty, a combination of
energies which complement and
nurture each other. It’s about opposites
attracting, yin-and-yang coming
together to create a magical union. Do
Butch-femme
roles essentially turned
heterosexuality on
its head
we really want to lose this in favour of
some clone-like community where
everyone looks and acts the same?
Being a lesbian in the twenty first
century is about the energies between
two women connecting. That’s the only
definition and there are no conditions
attached.
As a femme, I’m drawn to butch
energy. I’m not sexually attracted to
every butch, but I’m only attracted to
butches and it’s essentially their butch
energy which draws me in. I can only
describe it as a presence which allows
for strengths different to mines, which
compliments mines. Sexual and
powerful, butches have a way of
moving, combining strength with
loving and assertiveness with giving.
And femmes, far from being passive
lipstick/stiletto wearing doormats, are
strong, assertive, powerful, sexual,
nurturing and loving women who
possess an intrinsic chemistry with
butches – and that’s what differentiates
a femme from a ‘lipstick lesbian’.
Butch energy is this overtly
powerful female energy. Butch women
aren’t begging for crumbs from the
hettie world like some lesbians do.
They’re just there, in all their power,
being their mysterious, intriguing,
sexual selves. Externally a vision of
strength, a real butch is soft and
vulnerable inside, hiding a part of
themselves they don’t show to anyone
at first. Femmes can reach this part of a
butch and when they do, what’s inside
is something so special, something
they’ve fought hard to keep safe from a
lifetime of fighting the world. And it’s
this connection that infuses the
undeniable chemistry in a butch-femme
dynamic.
It’s sad that we’ve gone so far in
liberalising our identities that we’re
now actually eradicating them! There’s
a real danger in saying ‘everybody is
everything’, that identity is fluid –
because everybody isn’t everything! We
all have different ways, styles and turnons.
We’ve tried to push butch-femme
from the lesbian world, ignored our
sexual energy and acted like there are
no differences between lesbians. But
nothing can be more painful than
trying to stop being who we really are.
This is the time for us to reclaim what
we’ve tried to repress, and develop a
way to re-introduce butch-femme into
the context of today’s lesbian society.
Lose the shame, because the only real
shame is in rejecting a beautiful,
nurturing and loving dynamic simply
because someone else, a long time ago,
decided it was no longer relevant.
Films to know about
by Malcolm Epstein
Amjeed
Kabil
interviewed
on page 12
The coming months have two
films with gay characters - one
that treats them with respect
and one that doesn’t. August brings
us THE WALKER (15) with Woody
Harrelson known for playing rough
diamonds, who privately has a wife
and children, but here plays a
sophisticated gay man very
effectively. Wealthy American
politicians with no interest in opera,
ballet and their wives hobbies are
happy their women have a gay escort
so they don’t have to worry about his
sexual intentions. One afternoon a
week, Woody plays cards with mature
ladies including Lauren Bacall and
Kristin Scott Thomas. They find him
a constant amusement and are happy
to know he has a boyfriend at home.
Drama comes when he offers to drive
Kristin to her next appointment and
she rushes from the house to tell him
the man, whom she later confesses is
her lover, has been murdered.
Knowing if the wife of a
prominent politician admits to
having found a murdered man will
cause endless press coverage Woody
offers to call the police and say he
found him. The offbeat story holds
interest.
A British comedy later in
September DEATH AT A
FUNERAL (15) throws in everything
that can go wrong at a funeral. A
guest gives her nervous boyfriend a
pill from a bottle marked Valium and
when he begins acting strangely is
told the bottle contains
hallucinatory drugs. The man’s
behaviour goes from bad to worse
before he shocks the guests yelling:
“He’s not dead in there, he’s alive.”
Lurching across the coffin he knocks
it on the floor and the body with it.
Dragged away he locks himself in a
bathroom and stripping naked
climbs from the window on to the
roof.
A miniscule man then confesses
to the two sons of the deceased he
had been having an affair with their
father in the year before he died and
shows them intimate pictures of the
two of them together. If he is not
paid £15,000 he tells them he will
show these shots to the other guests.
They wrestle with him on the floor
and tie him up amid screams. “He is
having a fit.” They tell another guest
who walks in who has happened to
have found the Valium bottle and
forces some pills into the little man’s
mouth.
I was attracted to all this as the
widow is played by the most
neglected and charismatic actress in
Britain, Jane Asher. She has played
the lead in many London stage
productions and has been
disgracefully neglected by British
film producers. Not that she is too
worried being happily married with
grown up children and runs a
successful wholesale and retail cake
making company. Her first cake
decorating book in 1982 was
followed by many serious novels.
What ever hysteria took place in this
film I was happy to study Miss Asher.
French plays written by
MOLIERE (12a) in the 18th century
are still being revived today. The
good looking Romain Duris plays
him in this section of his life as a
struggling actor who begins writing
plays to pay the rent when he is not
stimulating local females. The
costumes of the day are impressive as
are the locations in ornate mansions.
French director Alain Resnais is
still making movies in his eighties
and with PRIVATE FEARS IN
PUBLIC PLACES (tbc) he chose to
film a play by the British Alan
Ayckbourn.
It covers the daily life of people in
snow covered Paris.
A Hollywood director went to
India to make MARIGOLD (15)
about a lovely American blonde, Ami
Larter, who finds herself broke in
Bombay. A top Hindi film star finds
her irresistible and teaches her to
dance so they can make a film
together. He has been betrothed to a
local girl from an early age and his
father doesn’t approve of his new
interest. The choreography and vast
cast are a delight. If you have never
seen an Indian film before as this is
in English it is worth tracking down
early in August.
Later in the month TWO DAYS
IN PARIS (tbc) is a good comedy
about an American guy and his
French wife who spend honeymoon
time in France as her parents live
there. He complains about the size of
French condoms saying nobody is
that small. The wife, Julie Delphy,
wrote, produced and directed it. The
husband, Adam Goldberg, has also
written film scripts. With these kinds
of minds a brittle script is no
surprise.
If you have nieces and nephews
fond of animals you will be very
popular taking them to FIREHOUSE
DOG (pg). A lost dog wanders into a
fire station to be befriended by the
fire chief and his 12 year old son. I
loved it.
CURRENT RELEASES
The younger generation may not
have heard of the singer Edith
Piaf and an ideal way to know
why the French and many other
nationalities revered her so greatly is
to see LA VIE EN ROSE (12a). Her
life was tragic as both parents
neglected her disgracefully and much
of the time a brothel owner brought
her up. Edith turned to drink and
drugs at an early age and as a street
singer she was finally noticed by a
club owner who realized her great
potential.
Her life story is a tearjerker and
Marion Cotillard in the lead is
perfection. The best way to
appreciate it is to get the EMI CD
soundtrack first and hear her
memorable songs. This film will
make many of us realize how lucky
we are.
There are those amongst us who
are convinced the Australian Eric
Bana is a gift from heaven. Letters
tell me your fantasy is waking up in
bed to find him next to you. The
fortunate Drew Barrymore has that
experience in LUCKY YOU (PG). It
helps to be a poker lover to
appreciate this one as in Las Vegas
they gamble night and day. Eric’s
father had taught him to play, but
they have a fraught relationship
against each other at the gambling
tables. Debra Messing, Grace in the
TV series “Will and Grace”, with a
revamped hairstyle is Drew’s
protective older sister. If Mr Bana has
not come under your scrutiny before
have a long look at him here.
A French thriller TELL NO ONE
(15) opened to rave reviews about a
guy who believes his wife has been
murdered and eight years later she
emails him. The critics loved it, but it
was never clear to me what she had
been doing all that time.
DVD WORLD
How would the royal family
react if a prince was gay? This
is the theme of
SURVEILLANCE which shows how
CCTV cameras can follow us most
places. Director Paul Oremland held
my constant interest casting a
stunning new face, Tom Harper, in
the lead as a sports master at a
public school who frequents gay
clubs at the weekend. Simon Callow
is the royal employee who has the
predicament of deciding what is
good for their image. For the first
time Peccadillo Pictures are
promoting this as video on demand.
Renting it costs £2.99. The wealthier
amongst us can buy it for £9.99
TAN LINES is easier to rent in
shops covering Australian teenagers
who surfboard when they are not
sexually active. A gay guy returns to
his family after a few years in the big
city to cope with the reaction from
his parents. There are faces here with
great potential beyond those beaches.
Made in the eighties THE FRUIT
MACHINE is now on DVD. Two
Liverpool teenagers leave home to
brave the wide world. Robert
Stephens is an opera singer past his
prime who finds one enchanting and
the other violent. Robbie Coltrane is
a drag queen running a night club.
It is an offbeat peculiarity...
Interview
ScotsGay’s Stephen Mathieson questions Amjeed Kabil, author of Straigtening Ali
Book reviews
by Dirk Kriete
books
What is the book about?
This is my first novel. It’s about Ali
Mirza, a young British born Pakistani
man, whose family arrange for him to
get married even though he has told
them he is gay. The novel follow’s Ali’s
story as he leaves after the wedding
night to be with his ex-boyfriend, only
to find out that his ex-boyfriend wants
nothing to do with him. He returns to
England homeless, and eventually finds
help and a new home. The story follows
Ali as he grows and develops from a
weak and vulnerable individual who
can barely stand up for himself to
someone who is able to survive some of
the worst things that life throws his
way. The story is quite humorous at
times with some wonderful lines, but
then there are sad and poignant
moments such as Ali’s wedding night
when his wife Sajda wants a physical
relationship.
What inspired you to write it?
The inspiration for the novel came
from events in my own life when I was
in my early twenties. There are parallels
between Ali’s story and my own. We
both had an arranged marriage which
we left, we’ve both been homeless, and
we’re both gay.
Some of my own experiences of living
in a British-Pakistani household are
reflected in Ali’s story as well. My
parents and family have given me some
interesting experiences – my parents
came to England in the 1950’s and then
brought their family up in accordance
with their traditional values, which
sometimes conflicted with Western
ones. However, this has given me a
unique insight into the gay British-
Asian experience, and a wealth of
stories to write about.
Is the family reaction to Ali’s
sexuality typical of how a
British Pakistani family reacts?
The family’s reaction in the novel to
Ali’s sexuality is typical of how some
British- Pakistani families might react.
In Pakistan it’s considered part of life
for men to experiment with each other
before they settle down and get married
(usually an arranged marriage).
Homosexuality is considered to be a
phase they go through. It’s a bit of
“masti”, or harmless fun.
As a British- Pakistani if you actually
say that you’re gay and are open about
your sexuality, you’re also opening
yourself to ridicule and homophobia
from parts of the community. The
family try to often protect themselves
from this by forcing the child into an
arranged marriage. A lot of people
therefore have to make a choice. Should
they be out and have nothing to do
with the community or should they
keep their sexuality hidden and do
what the community expects.
Are there differences - growing up
white and gay and growing up Asian
and gay?
I don’t think there are many differences
in growing up white and gay and
growing up Asian and gay. The same
expectations from the parents are still
there for the children to marry. The
same guilt and angst is still there for
the child. The only difference that there
might be is that the Asian child will be
told it is their duty to get married.
The other thing I would say is that
there are not many gay Asian role
models in the public eye.
Were you worried about portraying
elements of Pakistani life in a
negative way?
I’m unsure whether I have portrayed
elements of Pakistani life in any
negative way. What I have done is
written a story about the tough
balancing act many second generation
British-Asians have to do in trying to
reconcile the liberal British values with
the traditional Pakistani values.
Some people may consider that some
elements may be negative, but in the
story the family is reacting to
something that they can’t understand
and sometimes lack of understanding
can bring out the worst in people.
Have you witnessed racism from gay
people or are you aware of racism in
parts of the gay/LGBT community?
I have in the past experienced racism by
some elements of gay/LGBT
community, but this can be said about
the community in general. You will
always find a minority of people with
racist views.
However, nowadays my experience of
racism is pretty rare. The LGBT
community is becoming very inclusive.
When I first became curious about my
sexuality I went to a gay youth group in
Birmingham. It was a really safe
environment where I could be myself
and discover who I was.
Nowadays some nightclubs host an
Asian dance night such as Saathi here
in Birmingham and Club Kali in
London. How much more inclusive can
you get than that? This is about the gay
community appreciating the diversity
within.
Name your three greatest influences
or role models.
I have a great admiration for Meera
Syal. She’s managed to successfully
cross the TV medium from doing
shows like Goodness Greatness Me to
having written two excellent books.
Peter Tatchell is also another amazing
figure. I could never do what he does,
and sometimes his actions conflict with
what my views are but he does get
results. In a trip to Russia recently he
unfortunately got beaten up when he
took part in a gay pride parade. The
Russian police stood by whilst the
general public tried to disrupt the
parade. What he achieved was to put
Russia’s inhumane and homophobic
treatment of their gay community on
the world map. I have about thirty or
forty influences that would come
equally third. People like Monica Ali,
Irvine Welsh, Vikram Seth, Shahrukh
Khan, Bill Bryson and so on. I think I’d
better stop there!
Would you like to see Straightening
Ali as a stage play or a feature film?
I would love to see it as a movie. Meera
Syall to play Ali’s mothers role, Will
Young to play the Steve role and Jimi
Mistry (from East is East) to play the
Ali role.
What’s your second book called
and what’s it about?
I am currently working on my next
novel. It’s not another story about
Ali even though I get e-mails from
readers saying that they would
love a sequel. I don’t want to give
too much away, but it’s gay themed,
with a beautiful and glamorous cross
dressing man as the central character.
The story is light hearted and fun and
it’s been wonderful creating the new
characters.
Any plans to visit Scotland? We’d
happily show you around.
I have been to Edinburgh several times,
and really love the city especially during
the Fringe Festival. I will be going to
Edinburgh at the end of the year again
but I really need to get to Glasgow at
some point, and yes it would be great to
have a local guide!
Roulette
By Adrian Brooks
Published by Suspect Thoughts Press £9.99
This book will be a treasured memory for two
reasons, first of all for the brilliant story and
excellently crafted characters and secondly the
wonderful surroundings in which I found myself
reading the story of the town of Roulette. Most of
this book I read while lying in the sun by the pool
on beautiful Tenerife, and so compelling a read
this book is that I continued reading in the
evening. Roulette opens a view into the world of a
community thrown together by happenstance,
with absolutely hilarious consequences. All the
greedy real estate developers, right wing Christians
and sleazy Republican politicos find to their cost
that by picking a fight with the ragtag band of
artists, gays and nomads in this colourful shanty
town all they gain is egg on their collective faces. I
take my hat off to Adrian Brooks, and only hope
that perhaps Hollywood will pick up this story and
bring it to the masses. It deserves a star cast and a
dialogue as witty and sharp as this book.
The Danger Dance
By Caro Soles
Published by Harrington Park Press £9.99
This is the second book of my holiday reading list
and I must say it was another well chosen tale. It’s
a Sci-Fi with a twist, in that the main characters are
aliens of a hermaphrodite persuasion. The two
lovers are members of the Merculian National
Dance Company and are ordered by the dreaded
Praetan to leave their tranquil existence to go
undercover aboard the starship Wellington, to
discover who is passing secrets about fleet
movements and weaponry to the enemy. I have
always been a fan of Sci-Fi so you won’t be
surprised to hear that I highly rate and recommend
this book. Rest assured though that this
recommendation is not on genre alone, it is a book
full of futuristic space adventure, with enough
swashbuckling action and intrigue to keep even the
most jaded Sci-Fi addict enthralled.
Closet Monsters
By Dan Kelly
Published by Starbooks Press £11.99
Unfortunately this third and final book
accompanying me on my holidays was an utter
disappointment, which just goes to show that you
really can’t judge a book by its cover. The cover
proudly proclaims: ‘Wet dream or bloody nightmare!’ –
and as far as I am concerned, it certainly was the
latter. Now don’t get me wrong, I do like a bit of
spine chilling horror, but this book failed to deliver
anything of the sort… not even a little shiver was
gained by reading any of the twelve stories in this
collection. The only redeeming feature of these
stories was some red hot action, but even that
could not make up for the lacklustre characters
and shallow storylines dished out by the author.
Don’t take this book on holiday!
The Dragon Man
By Garry Disher
Published by Bitter Lemon Press £8.99
I should have taken this book on holiday instead
of the gothic horror... I was riveted from the first
to the last page It’s one of the most carefully
crafted and well written crime novels I’ve read in a
long time; full of twists and unexpected turns that
deliberately deceive you and leave you wondering
till the last page is turned. The story revolves
around a sleepy beat near Melbourne which is set
to explode as a series of murders set the press
alight. I won’t tell you much more of this story,
you’ll just have to go out and buy yourself a copy
of this book – you won’t regret it!
I am not Myself these Days
By Josh Kimer-Purcell
Published by Corgi £6.99
Armistead Maupin said about this book: “Absolutely
hilarious, heartfelt and heartbreaking!” and I have to
concur with those sentiments. This is the memoir
of the author, who lived a double life in New York.
By day, he was a successful young advertising
executive. By night, he would trade in his
corporate uniform for high heels and sequins,
performing in the underbelly of the Big Apple in
nightclubs as a glittering drag queen before
returning to the uptown penthouse he shared with
his crack-addicted male-escort boyfriend. This is
one autobiography well worth reading, as it blends
the rather tawdry and dramatic world of drag with
a soulful and ironic perspective of the author’s
journey through love and life. This is a brilliant
book, one of those emotional tour de force that
makes you laugh out loud one minute and has you
welling up the next. It is told with an unusually
honest voice that knows how to convey hard truth
with unflinching courage.
Hot Valley
By James Lear
Published by Cleis Press £8.99
When this book arrived I felt like rolling my eyes
in despair at the cheesy tag line designed to draw
the Pink Pound out of your pocket – I mean who
comes up with stuff like ‘Gay Love And Lust In The
American Civil War’ I ask you… But I did give it a go
and I must say that I am glad I did. It’s actually a
well written and coherent book, portraying the life
of young and spoiled Jack Edgerton, son of a
prominent Vermont Family. It is set in 1861, and
the troubles in the Southern states seem a long
way away. Everything changes however when he
meets and falls in love with Aaron Johnson, the
sexy son of a slave on the run from Virginia. The
two are separated by circumstance, but pursue each
other through the escalating madness of the Civil
War and both find themselves forced to choose
sides. After a series of outrageous adventures they
are finally reunited in the Shenandoah Valley
where the story reaches an unexpected climax.
After initial misgivings, I must say that this is a
really good read and it portrays life in that difficult
period of American history very well.
Dangerous Boys, Rent Boys
Edited by John Patrick
Published by Starbook Press £12.99
Well, Mr Patrick has done it again… When it comes
to gay erotica there’s just no-one quite like this
legend! This book does not disappoint, it has all
the usual thrills and spills we’ve come to love so
much in the anthologies and stories selected by
this ever so talented editor. These are stories about
boys you definitely wouldn’t want to take to meet
your mother, and anyway if you wanted to do just
that they probably would want to be paid for the
privilege. These dangerous boys are back in this
long overdue re-release of Dangerous Boys, Rent
Boys. Well-known authors of gay erotica such as
Terry Cross, Frank Brooks, James Wilton and Jess
Montagudo have beaten a path to John Patrick’s
door to be included in this release, but the star
prize as far as I’m concerned goes to the author of
the steamy bonus book included - Matthew: One
Of Lenny’s Boys!
Dorm Porn 2
Edited by Sean Fisher
Published by Alyson Books £10.99
Hot on the heels of John Patrick comes Sean
Fisher! He has brought together more raunchy,
irresistible gay erotic stories about college boys and
their sexy escapades. As with the first Dorm Porn
book, it’s time to go back to school and these
randy college boys can’t wait to do just that.
There’s enough hot action happening in dorms, on
campus and any place that fuels their hot passion
to keep you in the mood for more.
American Photography of the Male Nude 1940 – 1970
By Bob Mizer
Published by Janssen Publishers £19.99
Last but not least in this month’s selection, here is
a very superior coffee table book featuring the best
photography to come out of the Athletic Model
Guild during its reign from the 40’s through to the
70’s. Homosexuality was legalised in some
countries in 1968, which spelled the end for the
need of disguise and subterfuge. This is an intense
and incredible collection of photographs of a thenunderground
culture that was shaped and given its
character by the very fact that it was illegal. It is
also in photographic terms a unique document of
early erotica/homo-erotica that takes place in a
time prior to the mass production era of
pornography which exploded in the early 80’s.
This book will appeal to any collector of
photography, or students of history - especially
those specialising in the history of the gay and
lesbian movement. It will also provide a talking
point to those of us that just appreciate the beauty
of the male form.
Opinion
by Tony Challis
Tony Blair’s beloved’s are at it
again! I read that Cardinal Keith
O’Brien, head of the Catholic Church
in Scotland, says, “It is an unspeakable crime...I urge all
politicians to have no truck with the evil trade of
abortion...It is the equivalent of...two Dunblane massacres
a day”.
The leaders of the Roman Imperial Church in Cardiff
and London immediately jumped on this bandwagon.
What do these men think about miscarriages which are
said to be anything up to 20% of pregnancies? These occur
because of various problems in mother and/or foetus. But
each miscarriage represents the loss of a potential human
being. Could it be that God is the greatest abortionist of
them all?
Fundamentalist Christians also oppose stem cell
research, with terrible consequences for scientific research
in today’s USA. Thousands are and will suffer agonies and
terrible deaths which would have been avoidable had the
relevant research been allowed to go ahead. Will the
religious leaders think that the suffering is “good” for the
victims? Since many of the religious leaders will believe
that many of the sufferers are sinners who will endure
eternal torment in hell anyway, they can’t think that
present suffering will do them much good. What a sick
and perverted way of thinking! And these people have so
much respect and power in our society.
And Tony Blair is seeing the Pope and converting... Just
what does the Pope think of the legislation Tony supports
on abortion, divorce, gay rights, sex education etc? Will
Tony receive a lecture? Is there anything schizophrenic
about the split between Tony’s socio-political and his
religious beliefs? Would he support gay law reforms postconversion?
And what effect will it have on our society that
Cardinal Blair is giving way to Dominie Brown?
Between showers, I have been enjoying the rallies and
dives of a number of stunning men performing at the
NottinghamTennis Open, a lead-in to Wimbledon. Andy
Murray has not been here, but his brother Jamie has been
having some doubles success. When I saw 6’10” Ivo
Karlovic opposing 6’6” Juan Martin del Potro I thought I
had become a Lilliputian! However, it did occur to me that
amongst the scores of fine players there must be some of
my own sexual inclination. We all know about the famous
lesbian players - Martina, etc - but could it be that the guys
are still advised to be closeted?
There are large numbers of lesbian tennis supporters,
and maybe this makes it easier for the stars. Maybe the
men fear a loss of sponsorship and commercial
disadvantage. Whatever the reason, instead of looking at
the biographies and wondering, it would be nice to know.
Perhaps the establishment of a gay tennis supporters
association would help. (Does anyone know of one?)
However, I was interested to read this in the
Nottingham Open Guide about Dimitry Tursunov, the
Russian who put Tim Henman out in a tight secondround
three-setter. “According to his ATP biography, his
favourite hobbies include knitting and collecting walnut
shells. In his spare time he says he likes to, ‘catch up on the
latest figure skating or listen to Jean Michel Jarre and
Barbara Streisand.’ He is 6ft1in, 24, a strong handsome
guy with curly strawberry blond hair.” Hmmm. Sounds
like he’d be a really interesting man to have a conversation
with, anyway.
Colombia passes
partnership law then kills it
Colombia’s Congress passed then killed
a same-sex partnership bill in June. President
Álvaro Uribe, a conservative Catholic, had
promised to sign it into law.
The measure passed the House of
Representatives by a 62-43 vote on 14th Jun,
and had passed the Senate in Apr. It granted
spousal rights in the areas of social security,
health insurance and inheritance to samesex
couples who have been together at least
two years.
But later, in a vote to reconcile the
House and Senate versions of the bill, four
senators from Uribe’s La Ú party broke
ranks and opposed merging the bills,
thereby killing the measure.
The project’s sponsor, Sen. Armando
Benedetti, was furious and demanded that
the turncoats be expelled from the party.
Although a small number of Latin
American cities and states or provinces have
passed gay partnership laws, Colombia was
the first Latin American nation to do so.
Jamaican singers agree to
halt anti-gay music
Top Jamaican reggae-dancehall singers
Beenie Man, Sizzla and Capleton have
signed an agreement to stop bashing gays in
their music.
Under the Reggae Compassionate Act,
written by reggae promoters working with
activists from the international Stop Murder
Music campaign, the three performers will
not release new anti-gay songs or re-release
or perform their earlier gay-bashing
material.
The document states, in part: “There’s
no space in the music community for hatred
and prejudice, including no place for racism,
violence, sexism or homophobia. We agree to
not make statements or perform songs that
incite hatred or violence against anyone
from any community.”
Stop Murder Music’s campaigning has
resulted in the cancellation in several
countries of concerts by the three singers
and fellow gay-bashing dancehall singers
Elephant Man, TOK, Bounty Killa, Vybz
Kartel and Buju Banton, who have not
signed the agreement. Some of the singers
also have lost sponsorship deals because of
the campaign’s initiatives.
“This deal will have a huge, positive
impact in Jamaica and the Caribbean”, said
activist Peter Tatchell, who coordinates the
campaign from London. “Having these
major reggae stars renounce homophobia
will influence their fans and the wider public
to rethink bigoted attitudes. The beneficial
effect on young black straight men will be
immense.”
Gareth Williams, co-chair of the
Kingston-based Jamaican Forum for
Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays, said he
hoped the singers who signed the pledge
meant it.
“We hope it is not commercially
motivated by the singers’ desire to maintain
their concert revenues, but a sincere
commitment that will encourage an end to
homophobic violence”, Williams said.
Half of Irish
gays, lesbians
not out at
work
Irish gays and lesbians are more out to
friends and family than they are to
workmates, a Gay Community News/Out
Now poll has found.
The survey of 1,900 GCN readers found
that 79 percent are out to friends, 60 percent
are out to family, but only half are fully out
at work.
Other findings included: 10 percent of
the respondents have children, 10 percent of
couples have gone to another country to get
married or register a civil union, and 90
percent of couples would formalise their
partnership in Ireland if it were allowed.
Skinheads attack Chilean
gay group’s Web site
Self-identified skinheads hacked the
Web site of Chile’s leading gay group twice
in June.
The hackers changed the site’s monthly
survey to include rude sexual questions and
rewrote news headlines, according to the
Santiago Times.
They posted a note which read: “We
meet in the plaza near 36 Santa Rosa. We
don’t support something that isn’t natural.”
The same people apparently also sent
threatening e-mails to the organization, the
Movement for Homosexual Integration and
Liberation, or MOVILH, and to the Santiago
Times.
One received by the newspaper said:
“First and last warning. We fight against
dangerous scum: MOVILH. First the
hacking, next the theft of [MOVILH’s]
database.
Now comes the best part. We’re going to
turn everything on its head in the Plaza de
Armas. Faggots dressed as women dancing
in front of children are dangerous. They can
kiss and fuck if they want to, but they
shouldn’t confuse men for women.”
MOVILH leader Rolando Jiménez
commented, “A group of skinheads? They’re
not going to intimidate us”.
Cuba considers
same-sex partnership rights
Cuba’s National Center for Sex
Education (CENESEX) and the Federation
of Cuban Women have drafted a same-sex
partnership bill and submitted it to the
Political Bureau of the Communist Party
Central Committee.
“I can’t guarantee that it will reach
Parliament this year,” CENESEX director
Mariela Castro Espín told Inter Press
Service. “That is our hope, but it does not
depend on us, and of course, it is facing a
great deal of resistance.”
The proposal would extend spousal
rights to same-sex couples in inheritance,
housing, adoption and other areas.
Castro Espín is the daughter of Raúl
Castro, the nation’s current acting president.
The Thebans:
An International and
Personal Success
At the end of May the Thebans participated in the Union Cup,
a European Gay rugby tournament that took place in
Copenhagen. We played against teams from places like Sweden
and Amsterdam and even got to show our brother UK teams what
the Thebans are made of. And on the eve of our Fifth Year
Anniversary we walked away with the bronze medal in our division
(7s). Sore muscles or no, the title put a spring in all of our steps.
And for me it was a monumental achievement. For as long as I can
remember, I’ve always been too slow, too big, too small, or just too
scared to be of use in any sport. I’ve been on winning teams to fill
a quota and to feed my parents’ illusion that their kid was at least
a little butch. But, this was the first time in my life that I felt like
I’d actually achieved something and had been part of a team. And,
this wasn’t due to just my own abilities.
Since joining the Thebans, being part of the team became not
only about proving to myself that I could do it but also to do
justice to the people (my team mates) who had been supporting
and cheering me along; people who I’m constantly impressed with.
It has become a chance for me to play a game with people I
consider good friends and to feel good about what I can do, gay or
not. The inherent physical benefits of sport is just icing on the
cake.
I moved to this country in 2005, and have had one big
transition, disappointment, and personal revelation after another.
And in 2006 at Pride Scotia in Glasgow, I very apprehensively
picked up a leaflet for a gay rugby team. I wasn’t sure then if I
really wanted to do it. Contact sports, mud, and garishly coloured
mouth guards really aren’t my thing. But, I was curious and
wanted to expand my social activities beyond the pub. I figured
give the first day a shot and go from there. I’ve not looked back
since. So, if there are any of you who are
curious and just want to give it a try, it’s
worth it. We were out there at Pride on
the 23rd cheering and handing out fliers
and throwing around a rugby ball. Our
new start training session and BBQ is on
the 14th of Jul and we’re hosting a Cake
Bake on the 30th of Jun. When you see
us, come on over and chat, we’re friendly.
Or, drink lots of Lambrini, put your e-
mail on the sign up sheet, then run away
quickly like I did last year. Rugby is a lot
of hard work, but is a lot more fun and
the people you meet make it even better.
If you want to get in touch with any
questions or for more information feel
free.
Let’s start with the news that Vivid Youth is one of the very few groups to be picked to open
Parliament on Sat 30th Jun! A picnic will be held in the park opposite if you fancy a nibble. The group
is going from strength to strength in the Centre on a Tue and Wed night, although there have been a
few wee mumbles of discontent since the group split into smaller age-groups. Vivid made costumes
for the recent West End festival, and were then seen at Pride. If you want to know more, pay a wee
visit to their website lgbtyouth.org.uk
OurStory Scotland has landed a major coup! They will be featured in the Kelvingrove for next
year’s LGBT history month (Feb 2008). The next meeting is Thu 26th Jul at the Modern Art Museum.
If you have anything you would like to contribute, then please come along! At the moment the group
is looking for anything LGB and most of all T. The group had a great evening making masks on Fri
22nd Jun, and intend using some of the art work in the exhibitions. If you have anything to contribute,
big or small, pop along. Truly this lot have done extraordinary things since forming back in 2001, a
spirited voluntary group with everyone giving their time freely. It welcomes everyone, and includes all
age ranges from teenage years to those that wee bit older!
The Bears meeting in the Revolver is still going well but it is a wee bit small! Every second Fri
the Bears meet at the Revolver, so calling all bears to join the group!
And we still have Burly on Fri 6th July in the Arches with DJ Mishka.
Bennets has a new night on Wed called ‘High Maintenance.’ They are also holding the ‘Mr Gay
UK’ heat on Fri 29th Jun; this
has become something of an
event in the city and is always a
laugh! I am pleased, however,
to see more of a ‘burly’ feel in
recent years rather than the
pretty boy stuff. It’s a big scene
– let’s make it a bit more
diverse I say!
And the Womens Library?
I’m sure you heard about the
‘Heritage Walk’ on 9th and 23rd
Jun: it was open to all and was
very successful. Now they are
hosting a planting workshop
which is lead by Heidi Quinn
(Wed 27th Jun at 2pm for 10
weeks). This workshop is to
show you how to make and
design a carpet! I’m so pleased
that the move has been so
successful and that they
continue their wonderful and
inspiring work. Always fresh and
inventive, and has a way of
grasping the imagination.
Gay Men’s Health are
having a re-launch and are
interested in volunteers for their
Glasgow office (Tel: 0141-552
0112). The group has been
building its numbers recently,
and as well as doing scene
work they have future plans for
saunas too.
Paul Rydings’ work ‘Hard
Pencil’ is still in the Arches till
Tue 17th Jul; this is his second
solo done specifically for the
Arches Check out his website:
paulryding.com
Another must-see exhibition
is Jimi Rae’s wonderful ‘Seed of
Hope’ (19th Jul-14th Aug). This
is a mixture of docu-style
photography and portraiture,
showing images taken in Nairobi
in a recent trip with ‘Fair Trade’.
Some images are harrowing,
and others convey faces full of
hope. Check out the web at
jimirae.com for more
information. These beautiful
images touch the heart.
Well, that’s me until our next
time together!
What a fantastic Pride we were
lucky to enjoy! I felt so proud and
honoured to be a part of it. The
speakers were a great motivation
prior to marching, and particularly
poignant was the reference to how
many of our fellow LGBT people in
other countries were not afforded
the luxury of being able to safely
march. Onto Pilrig Park, and the
Pride Committee really did us
proud. So many tents with a variety
of stalls, demonstrating just how
diverse our community has become.
The beer tent was fantastic, and of
course best of all – so many toilets.
I was sooooo relieved!
CC Blooms have to be awarded
some kind of ‘best dressed venue’
prize for their amazing display for
Pride weekend! They’d erected an
impressive marquee-like structure
around their entrance, with
hundreds of bright rainbow
coloured balloons.
Deep Blue’s weekly women’s
night, Blue Mondays, is going down
a treat so far, with resident DJs
Random and Leatherface plus
guests entertaining the ladies. This
is of course a spin-off from the
Mother of all women’s nights,
Velvet, which is hosted 3rd Sat of
the month at Studio 24. Always
going one better than last time,
Velvet have become renowned for
their fantastic entertainment which
keeps them one step ahead of the
competition biting at their heels, and
July will not disappoint! On 21st
Jul, Velvet are holding a Drag King
Workshop, with top tips and demos
on how we women can drag it up
just as good as the boys!
This month sees the start of
another new club night, Scum, held
at the Claremont Bar on the last Thu
of the month (26th Jul). From 9pm
til late, DJs Calvin, Leatherface
(Velvet, Blue Mondays) and guests
will be spinning the best of old and
new punk, rock and metal classics.
And a big woot woot to the verrrry
sexy foot worship flyer!
LGBT Youth were a big presence
at Pride, both during the march with
their attractive banner and later on
at Pilrig Park. There were all sorts of
fun activities going on inside the
Youth Tent, including face painting.
Not to mention the ‘Petting Corner’
– now I’m sure I wasn’t the only
one to stifle a chuckle over this!!
LGBT Youth recruited new members
to Fusion, who meet weekly and are
involved in a variety of different
projects and activities.
The LGBT Centre for Health &
Wellbeing used Pride as a
launching pad for their exciting new
‘Your Mind Matters’ programme of
mental health workshops and
seminars, all free and intending to
raise awareness and provide skills
in self esteem and exploration of
recovery. Subjects include
Managing Conflict & Stressful
Situations, Crisis Planning, Talking
About Self Harm, Food & Mood,
Suicide, Safer Sex and Spirituality.
With such an abundance of topics,
there is sure to be something to suit
you! This exciting programme will
run from Sep til Dec ’07 – for more
info check out
www.lgbtmindmatters.org.uk.
Also launched by the LGBT
Centre for Health & Wellbeing was
the re-vamped version of their
newsletter, Village Voices, in a
trendy new magazine format. This
new community mag features up to
date news, events and a group
directory. A big well done to all the
volunteers involved, and in
particular Johanna the laptop
genius, for her motivation and
dedication to the cause!
And lastly, the Metropolitan
Community Church are raising
awareness of their worldwide
movement of LGBT churches. A
place to explore spirituality, faith
and justice, check them out at the
Augustine United Church on George
IV Bridge every Sun at the very
Aberdeen
obar dheadhainn
Lexi Lush
E-mail: lexi@scotsgay.co.uk
Hello to everyone! What a busy
time we’ve had up here in the
granite gay scene. We kicked off the
month of Jun with our annual gay
pride weekend, which was a huge
success! The Freemasons went
down a treat; their stomping tunes
and the thrill of the massive foam
cannon, with the added chemistry
between them and resident Friday
night DJ Gary Noble making for a
fabulous night had by all.
Sat was a record night for Club
Foundation, with performances by
Aberdeen singer Laura Henny and
of course I was performing with my
glamorous lushettes.To see our
performance go to Web:
http://lexyandthelushettes.bebo.com
The only disappointment I had
about our pride was the
performance by X Factor “stars”
Eton Road! Not only did they only
do 20 minutes of their half hour set,
they also sang the same song twice!
Which wasn’t even good the first
time!!
However
they were
lovely boys
who seemed
to enjoy their
time in the
VIP lounge with me and my
lushettes and I must say they were
very easy on the eye.
This month sees the opening of
new gay venue Teazers, situated
above Cheerz on Hadden street.
Yes that’s right folks, the old strip
joint has gone gay, with strippers
for both lezzers and horny homos
alike! Cheerz will also be providing
its usual entertainment with its quiz
every Thur hosted by Miss Romy,
and the fabulous disco bus on a Fri!
Club Foundation has also
freshened up its entertainment
schedule with a Retro Night on
Mon, with yours truly and Cheese
Master DJ Stuart Jolly. Tue nights
have now gone Indie, where you
won’t find a sequin in site! Wed
nights see the return of renowned
Shagtag Screen, and Thu nights are
all the hits from the 90’s to today
with DJ Andy. I return to perform
with Gary Noble on a Fri with
comedy, sing song and all the
hilarity that entails from 10pm, then
Gary bangs out the floor fillers from
midnight. Discobus return for the
infamous Sat nights, and finally we
finish the week with the ever
fabulous Sarah Diva on a Sun.
For all you people out there who
like a little break from the wild gay
scene and want a little bit more
sophistication and glamour, me and
my lushettes perform our monthly
gig at Club Sapphire located on
Shiprow, which also features a
popular Burlesque night on the last
Sat of every month.
Wellmans Sauna is also going
strong, with its handy facilities and
laid back environment making it a
very discreet and enjoyable
experience. You’ll find the sauna on
Holburn Street across from the
Talisman Building.
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank
everyone for the
support they gave me
and my lushettes
during our
performance at Pride
in Aberdeen 2007 -
you know who you
are!
Much Love, Lexie.
As soon as a date is released they
will let you know via the usual
methods. They are also on the look
out for more community support
volunteers to help out with various
initiatives at THTA. If you have a
few hours a week to spare, please
get in touch with them.
Pride In Aberdeen 2007 - This
years Pride took place on Sat 2nd
Jun in the city centre, and was a
huge success!
1st-2nd Jun saw some amazing
entertainment in the shape of world
famous DJs The Freemasons and X
Factor Finalists Eton Road, both of
which were given a huge Aberdeen
welcome when they played
Foundation. The Pride team would
really like to thank everyone who
made Pride possible this year and
especially Will, Rick and Gary at
Foundation.
Cheerz Bar - Cheerz is still
going strong after being open a
year. It’s the fun place to be every
Thu to Sun. On the last Thu of
every month there’s a £100 prize for
the winning quiz team (5 members
or less!) Fri is the big start to the
weekend with various DJs playing
party tracks to get you in the mood!
Sat entertainment starts at 6.30pm
with karaoke from Alan M, thru til
9.30pm when Miss Romy bursts
onto stage with even more karaoke
and party tunes to take you thru til
1am! Wind down your weekend on
Sun from 8pm with more, yes, you
got it... Karaoke and classics from
Alan M. More info on Cheerz at
Web: http://Cheerz-Bar.bebo.com
Wellmans - Wellmans has now
been open for a few months at their
health suite at on Holburn Street.
For more information you can give
them a call on Aberdeen (01224)
Hopefully that is everything
right up to date for the city of
Aberdeen. As this goes to press
there was news of a new venue in
the city above Cheerz Bar. If the
rumour there is true, we will bring
you more news on it next month
and hopefully be able to catch up
with a few of the venue owners and
characters on the scene to get their
input for the article.
If you were at Pride Scotia,
hope you had a fantastic day!
So… I am somewhere between
Pride Scotia and London Pride, and
it’s a mighty fine - albeit hung-over -
place to be! With Pride season
kicking off in Edinburgh, I’ve hired
my kilt already! But Dundee isn’t
letting you down this month with
plenty going on between Prides and
holidays.
The Gauger - I am pleased to
tell you they were involved in the
Dundee Blues Bonanza again this
year. For those not aware, The
Gauger was called upon last year at
the last minute, after another venue
let them down. If you like live music
and a bit of fun, the Blues Bonanza
is a great weekend. It’s held on the
first weekend in July. The Gauger
has bands on all day on the Sat,
with Mr. Spider on at 2.30pm, Blue
to the Bone at 6pm and Crossfire at
10pm. For more information on
Dundee’s Blues Bonanza go to their
website at
dundeebluesbonanza.co.uk. The
Gauger will also have a band on the
last Sat of the month - 29th Jul. And
if you like your music a bit more
cheesy, The Gauger has Karaoke
every Wed and Sun evening, with a
karaoke competition on 1st Jul.
Ross is still providing your fix of
cheese and pop every Fri and Sat
night.
Brooklyn’s is open 7 nights a
week from 5pm till Midnight, with
karaoke on every Wed, Fri and Sun.
DJ every Sat night playing a mix of
old and new, and Miss Ally DJ-ing
every 2nd Sat. There are
drink promos every night until 9pm,
and free pool between 5pm and
9pm.
OUT is all go this month,
especially for all you hunky men as
the Mr. Gay UK Dundee Heats are
being held on 6th Jul. All you have
to do to enter is go along and fill in
an entry form and hand it into one
of the Mr Gay UK staff.
OUT is getting us all in the summer
mood this month with DJ Dean,
playing all your requests and plenty
of cheese on Sat nights. And with
loads of drinks promos and cheap
entry, you can’t go wrong!! DJ
Jamie is there to start and finish
your weekends playing Fri and Sun
nights, with her mix of dance and
requests. And for all you mid-week
drinkers, OUT is open every Wed
and Thu so celebrate the Dundee
Fortnight in style and go to OUT
every night!!!
Diversitay went over to Pride
Scotia, where they were
representing Tayside. Diversitay’s
social evening is held first Wed of
the month in Braes, from 6pm and
7.30pm. They would like to
apologise to those who came to the
last one and were over-run by
Scottish Football supporters!
Diversitay are this summer trying
out different venues for the social
evenings, with the Aug social
evening taking place in Nosey
Parkers. The Diversitay newsletter
is now out and can be picked up in
all the normal venues, plus
Grouchos, local colleges, volunteer
centre and hospitals.
And finally from Diversitay a big
thank you to all those who have
joined their Bebo Website, so far it
is going really well and is updated
frequently. From their page you can
also reach Brooklyns and OUT’s
pages which will also keep you up
to date with goings on. Check out
Web: bebo.com/diversitaylgbt
Remember that the main role
that Diversitay plays in Tayside is
their phone line - Dundee (01382)
202620 - which is open between
7pm and 9pm every Mon evening.
DCA is playing host to the
“London Lesbian and Gay Festival
on Tour”, with films being shown
over the last week in Jun and first
week in Jul, including The
Blossoming of Maximo
Oliveros (pictured) - Wed
27th Jun at 6pm. Puccini
for Beginners - Fri 29th
Jun at 6pm. Tick Tock
Lullaby - Sat 30th June at
3pm. And 4.30pm -
Sunday 1st July at 3pm.
Pop into the DCA and
baggage. I’m looking for love.
Are you out there?
