Mary Has Ridden Off To Texas!<br />

After finally selling her home, Mary has gone<br />

to Texas where she has family, friends <strong>and</strong><br />

aspirations. Since this was a bit unexpected,<br />

she doesn’t have a house/barn yet, so Star will<br />

be staying with Jill Hardt until February. She<br />

hopes to come back then to fulfill a technical<br />

delegate requirement, working at a two day<br />

show, <strong>and</strong> picking up Star as well.<br />

―All this would have been much easier if I got<br />

the offer when I went out to Texas in December‖<br />

said Mary. She will be packed <strong>and</strong><br />

moved by December 31—a whirlwind of efficiency.<br />

Mary has been a dedicated member of<br />

SDCTA for many years, always helping out if<br />

asked (<strong>and</strong> sometimes even before). She volunteered<br />

to be the secretary at schooling<br />

shows <strong>and</strong> rated shows, for many years, a<br />

credit to the Club. She served on the Board<br />

<strong>and</strong> every officer position. She has helped<br />

with the newsletter, organized records-prize<br />

forgive me if I missed anyone...<br />

We have no meeting minutes from December as we were all enjoying ourselves at Mireille’s<br />

house for the Christmas party. We had a good turnout, but many members missed out on the<br />

good food, good conversation (much of it was horse-related, but there were other conversations<br />

going on) <strong>and</strong> good natured camaraderie. There was plenty of space for all of us, <strong>and</strong> we made<br />

the most of it, especially in the BIG kitchen, family room <strong>and</strong> beautiful black <strong>and</strong> white Florida<br />

room. And we all got a gift bag when we left, from both the caterer <strong>and</strong> our hostess!<br />

Thank you, Mireille, for a Christmas party to remember.<br />

<strong>Training</strong> Tip of the Month<br />

OOH! Time for their SHOTS!<br />

Part of owning a horse means giving annual vaccines or occasionally having to administer antibiotics.<br />

Giving a horse a shot is something many people dread because it can turn into a problem. You<br />

could try to do some basic groundwork with your horse like, leading, backing up, moving sideways,<br />

for a few minutes to get your horse focused you.<br />

Once you have done your groundwork, take the syringe <strong>and</strong> tap on the horse’s neck (or wherever<br />

you need to administer the shot) in a rhythmic manner. At first, this may bother the horse but as<br />

soon as he st<strong>and</strong>s still <strong>and</strong> relaxes, take the syringe away. Let him relax for 30 seconds or so <strong>and</strong><br />

then repeat the tapping exercise again. Continue doing this until your horse is desensitized to the<br />

tapping.<br />

The next step is to simply tap, tap, tap, give the shot, <strong>and</strong> then tap, tap, tap. If your horse throws its<br />

head up or gets bothered, just ignore it <strong>and</strong> continue tapping. Basically, don’t make giving a shot a<br />

big deal. If you don’t act like it’s a big deal, your horse will stay much calmer.<br />

The main thing to remember is to not act any different around your horse when giving him a shot.<br />

Act just as you normally would if you were simply going to catch him. Some people start sneaking<br />

around their horse when they have to give a shot, <strong>and</strong> it just makes the horse uncomfortable <strong>and</strong><br />

nervous. Remember, horses are excellent at reading our body language, so keep yours relaxed<br />

<strong>and</strong> calm, desensitize your horse to the tapping feeling, <strong>and</strong> you shouldn’t have any trouble the<br />

next time you have to give one of those dreaded shots.<br />

Tom Noone Clinic at Turtleback Farm—February 21 & 22nd<br />

Tom is a USDF Bronze, Silver <strong>and</strong> Gold Medalist who represented the US at the 2001 World Cup in Denmark<br />

<strong>and</strong> was short listed for the World Equestrian Games in 2002. Tom has trained <strong>and</strong> shown more than a dozen<br />

horses to Gr<strong>and</strong> Prix. Tom has been competing since winning at lead-line when he was 3. Since 1984, when he<br />

won the ASHA (USEF) <strong>Training</strong> Level Horse of the Year at the age of 11, Tom has earned National <strong>and</strong>/or Regional<br />

Championships at every level to Gr<strong>and</strong> Prix all on horses he has trained.In his clinics, Tom works with<br />

every level of rider because he realizes that riders want to continue to learn no matter what their current level.<br />

The clinic is open to all level of riders on a first come – first served basis, sessions are 45 minutes. The fee is<br />

$100 for current SDCTA members in good st<strong>and</strong>ing (earned their volunteer hours last year), $115 for current<br />

SDCTA members (who did not earn their hours) <strong>and</strong> $135 for non-members (no coupons or vouchers accepted).<br />

Auditors are welcome (bring your own chair), dogs are not welcome, even if held or on leash!<br />

No stabling available.<br />

Presidents Message<br />

Dear Members,<br />

I hope all of you had a very wonderful holiday. (Eating too many cookies was definitely<br />

one of my highlights!) Speaking of holidays, many thanks to Mireille Doffegnies for hosting<br />

our Christmas party. She really put herself out <strong>and</strong> did a lovely job. Thank you again.<br />

It is that time of year when we all start to set goals … again ...for the season ahead.<br />

The nice thing about this sport is that goals for our horses <strong>and</strong> ourselves can be so varied<br />

there are so many relevant pieces in this ongoing puzzle. .Competition itself is not always the<br />

most important emphasis, but often competition can be a guide to what we need to work on<br />

next. The health <strong>and</strong> fitness of both horse <strong>and</strong> rider is a major consideration as we can’t expect<br />

to progress to collection, for example, unless the horse has learned to carry itself <strong>and</strong> sit<br />

<strong>and</strong> the rider has the core strength <strong>and</strong> balance to use the different aids independently of one<br />

another. Then there is also the endless work on technique to find all the little nuances in the<br />

movements <strong>and</strong> build a rapport with our horses. It is never ending <strong>and</strong> full of rewards - good<br />

luck!<br />

SDCTA tries to help all of us with a well rounded schedule of programs at our meetings,<br />

clinics, <strong>and</strong> shows. In order to be sure we are helping you with your goals, we need<br />

your input on what you would like to have us offer. If you have ideas for meetings, favorite<br />

clinicians, or any program you would like, just contact me or any board member. It is especially<br />

useful if you can help organizing your suggestions. We always can use new meeting<br />

locations too. Finally, we need everyone’s help to mutually realize all our goals...please volunteer<br />

… for shows, write an article for the newsletter, whatever needs to be done.<br />

On a sad note, our good friend Mary Mobley is moving to Austin Texas the beginning<br />

of the year. She has given so much of herself over the years. Mary has served in almost<br />

every position on our board from president on down. Her work managing the rated shows is<br />

huge, let alone her ongoing work as Treasurer, Membership Coordinator <strong>and</strong> the official contact<br />

for the club. Those shoes are going to be difficult to fill, <strong>and</strong> there aren’t enough thanks to<br />

go around, Mary! We all wish you the very best in the future.<br />
