21st Annual San Antonio International Woman’s Day March & Rally
Sin Fronteras Mujeres
marcharán por paz, justicia y
solidaridad!

The 2011 San Antonio International
Woman’s Day March and
Rally will be held at 10 a.m. on
Saturday, March 5th. The march
will begin at Travis Park and will
end in the historic Plaza del Zacate
(Milam Park) with a rally featuring
several speakers and performers,
including poet Tammy Gomez,
Houston hip-hop artist Kiawitl Xochitl,
Green Party vice-presidential
candidate Rosa Clemente, and
others.
The planning committee is actively
reaching out to Austin, Dallas,
Corpus Christi, Houston, and
South Texas women to participate
in the march, and organizers expect

the number of marchers to exceed
last year’s count of 3,000.
The International Woman’s Day
March in San Antonio, unlike any
other in the US, has historically
addressed a wide range of issues,
from violence against women and
reproductive rights to development
over the Edwards Aquifer, from
immigration to war and occupation.
By bringing together diverse
groups of women, including transgender
and genderqueer people, the
march helps to build understanding
of interconnected issues and their
effects on women and girls.
The theme for this year’s march,
“Sin Fronteras, Mujeres Marcharán
Por Paz, Justicia y Solidaridad”
(Without Borders, Women Will
March For Peace, Justice and
Solidarity) draws attention to the
issue of migration and US immigration
policy, as well as the issue
of violence – including domestic
violence, police brutality and US
wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
With racist laws similar to Arizona’s
SB1070 coming before
the Texas legislature in 2011, the
march will also build on the passionate
organizing done in San
Antonio and throughout the US
around immigration this year –
from demonstrations of solidarity
with the people of Arizona, to the
UTSA hunger strikers and their
community supporters advocating
for the DREAM ACT.
The S.A. Int’l Woman’s Day
March Committee, along with the
SA Free Speech Coalition, will
also continue to speak out against
the repressive 2007 Marching and
Parade Ordinance, which imposes
high fees for political marches
and cultural processions in public
streets, limiting the right to freedom
of speech and access to public
spaces in San Antonio.

“La Reina del Sur” llega a Telemundo

Basada en el Best-Seller del
escritor español, Arturo Pérez-
Reverte, “La Reina del Sur”, es
la telenovela que dará comienzo
a las 9 p.m., el 28 de febrero por
Telemundo, y narra la historia de
Teresa Mendoza, protagonizada
por Kate del Castillo, quien pasa
por tres continentes en un lapso
de 12 años. Teresa comienza
como una mujer inocente, pero las
situaciones que se le presentan la
convierten en una mujer poderosa
que conmueve al mundo al conquistar
un negocio que es solo para
hombres.
Teresa recibirá una llamada
que pone su vida en peligro y la
obliga a escapar a España, país en
donde vivirá una serie de eventos
que cambiarán su vida. Se muda
a Melilla, una ciudad española
al norte de África, en donde se
enamora de un apuesto narcotraficante,
Santiago López Fisterra,
interpretado por Iván Sánchez,
quien le enseña todos los secretos
sobre la navegación, las lanchas
rápidas y cómo sobrevivir en el
estrecho de Gibraltar.
“Me metí mucho en mi personaje
porque hay cosas que yo no
sabía sobre mi papel, sin embargo
si la historia hubiera sido exclusivamente
sobre Teresa, me hubiera
metido más a fondo”, expresó
Kate. “El internet fue el recurso
por el cual me enteré de muchas
de las historias de mi personaje”.
Teresa termina en una prisión
española, en donde su allegada
compañera de celda, Patricia
O’Farrell, interpretada por Cristina
Urgel, la transforma en una mujer
con clase y elegancia.
Al ser redimida, se alía con la
mafia rusa y se proyecta como
líder de un gran imperio de tráfico
de drogas.
Teresa pasa por muchas situaciones
difíciles, por lo que se verá
forzada a transformarse de una
mujer inocente a una mujer lo
suficientemente fuerte como para
sobrevivir en el oscuro mundo del
narcotráfico.
Lo que proyecta la nueva mujer
en la que Teresa se transforma,
sorprenderá a aquellos que no
conocen y hasta a los que conocen
la leyenda de “La Reina del Sur”.
La telenovela trata sobre una realidad
que se vive ahora en varios
países, ya que el narcotráfico es
uno de los problemas de inseguridad
más graves en la actualidad.
Según Iván, es un problema que
debe mostrarse para que la gente
tenga conocimiento sobre el tema.
“La telenovela trata sobre una
realidad y lo único que hacemos es
poder mostrar eso a la gente de la
calle, no hay por qué esconderlo,
este tema está y existe”, comentó
Iván. “Aparte, la telenovela también
es una historia de amor y de
supervivencia de una mujer que
vive en un mundo muy hostil, así
que es importante poner eso en
imágenes y que la gente acceda a
