Carlos Guerra-more than a colleague, a friend

¡He dicho!
I knew Carlos Guerra when
he had hair. It was a dilemma he
was dealing with and finally opted
to go the Yul Brenner route.
He kind of enjoyed the look and
would kid about it. “Everybody
thinks I’m on chemo and it gets
me a free beer.” That was Carlitos,
always finding something
funny in anything that came up.
When we met he was freelancing,
a buzz phrase for unemployed
journalists. We started
hanging out when the San Antonio
Press Club was still organized
and meeting every week.
Then we met at the Gunther
Hotel at The Watering Hole
on the mezzanine level. We
thought they really liked us and
were glad to have us around. Of
course, there was no fee for use
of the lounge and they gave us
happy hour prices and snacks.
Then the symphony offered to
pay for use of the lounge and the
Press Club found a new home.
Carlitos and I would always
manage to get a table close
enough to the bar and the food,
while still being able to watch
people shoot pool and toss darts.
We were both man enough to
admit that we mastered neither
of the activities, but were avid
watchers and could always offer
hindsight 20/20 commentary.
When we talked, the topic
would always end in politics.
Later on I realized he always
went that way because I was a
novice and he would dominate
the conversation. Did I mention
that Carlitos liked to talk?
He had a way with words and
we’d eventually have the nearby
tables more or less involved in
the conversation, if and when
they could get a word in.
As time went on and our hangouts
changed, I discovered he
was genuinely passionate about
every topic we discussed. However,
regardless where or how
the conversation started, politics
and “doing the right thing”
would always become the point.
Despite his love of politics
and wanting to do the right
thing, Carlitos always managed
to find humor in whatever situation.
Like the time he met with
a político mexicano near the
airport, and was offered a bribe
in order to get a good write up.
Of course he did not accept the
payment, but in order to keep
the politico from losing face,
Carlitos ended the interview
with a humorous antidote that
left everyone laughing. What
he said I cannot remember, but
I do remember we laughed all
the way down to the parking lot.
While most of his articles were
of a serious nature, it was the
light-hearted ones that stayed
with me. His serious stuff was
all he talked about when we got
together, so reading his funny
articles was nice. Like the one
dealing with the shortage of corn
husks just before the holiday
season. Now if you’re Latino,
then you know the seriousness
of this. Of course, back then
we weren’t Latino, we were
Mexican-American.
I digress. The article had him
talking with Mexican famers that
produced the husks and how they
were dealing with the problem.
Little or no husks meant little or
no money for the farmers. The
bigger picture meant maybe few
or no tamales. Did I mention he
also wrote an article about the
proper spelling of the Mexican
delicacy? Tamal or tamale?
Bygones.
The husk article went on and
even the most devoted Guerra
reader wondered where the piece
was going. The obvious had been
stated, fewer husks meant less
money for the grower and fewer
for the buyer of tamales. Eventually,
Carlitos realized he had to
end the article and once again his
humor took over. The final line
went something like, “If indeed
there is a shortage of husks and
the tamales available are fewer

The disease is spreading quickly
-- according to a report in
Haiti Libre News, UN Secretary-
General Ban Ki-moon said earlier
this week that the World Health
Organization (WHO) and Pan
American Health Organization
(PAHO) now estimate the cholera
epidemic in Haiti could affect as
many as 650,000 people over the
next six months.

Young guns: Texas considers
concealed guns on campus

Proposed legislation for the
new year includes state Rep.-elect
David Simpson’s (R-Longview)
House Bill 86. The “Personal
Protection on Campus Act,” would
allow students who are at least 21
and properly licensed to carry their
weapons on college campuses, a
polarizing issue among college
faculty, students and administrators.
Simpson explained the idea was
not new.
“At least 71 campuses in three
states allow concealed handgun

licensed holders to carry on campus,
and at least 30 of those have
had the privilege in place for more
than five years without incident,”
he said.
In the last legislative session, the
Senate passed a similar bill proposed
by state Rep. Joseph Driver
(R-Garland) and co-sponsored by
Sen. Jeff Wentworth by a wide
margin, 20-11. Nevertheless, the
measure failed to reach the House
in spite of 75 co-authors.
Simpson, whose son William
attends A&M, believes this is a
matter of self-defense.
“Self defense is a God-given
inalienable right along with life,
liberty and property and should
be secured by the government,
not taken away – no one should be
able to that right away from you,”
Simpson said.
Chris Ramirez, an accounting
major in his junior year at Texas
State University, and a Senator at
TSU’s Associated Student Government,
recently dealt with this
issue on the floor of the school
senate, which voted to support
concealed-carry on campus last
week.
“When the first resolution to
support the administration’s ban of
concealed weapons was presented,
I voted for it,” Ramirez said.

Staying fit during the holidays

Friends always ask me what I
do to stay in shape. While, I am
no expert, I do follow several
rules that have helped me along
the way. I hope they help you
too.
1. Take in fewer calories
than what you spend every day.
Meaning - eat less and make
those calories count - see #2.
2. Eat healthy. Eat a banana
for breakfast instead of a taco. If
you eat tacos, get them on corn.
Instead of chips, munch on an
apple. Do not eat heavily three
hours before you go to bed.
Watch what you eat, specially
your sodium intake. No more
sodas! Drink green tea instead of
coffee. Make the last 15 seconds
of your shower very cold - this
creates a process called Thermogenesis
- way too long to explain
here but basically, it helps you
burn calories for hours without
your effort.
3. Drink lots of water...I repeat,
drink lots of water. This
cleans your system and helps you
get rid of fat.
4. Find a way to exercise on a
regular basis. If you cannot join a
gym then exercise throughout the
day. Take the stairs instead of the
elevator. Get up from your chair
without using your arms. Walk
3-4 times a week for a few miles.
Listening to your favorite jams
will make time fly. Even once

5. Find friends and family
members with similar interests
who will motivate you and stay
after you. Someone that will
share tips and even workout with

Nada es secreto.
El torrente reciente de documentos
confidenciales de la
política exterior estadounidense
revelados en el sitio WikiLeaks
confirma que estamos en un
mundo más abierto y transparente
que nunca.
Y la sencilla función de
WikiLeaks parece ser la nueva
premisa del siglo 21: una vez
publicado, nada desaparece. Si
algo aparece en la pantalla de
una computadora, muy probablemente
será guardado en alguna
parte. En esta era digital, incluso
un texto íntimo puede convertirse,
con sólo un clic del mouse,
en un asunto público. Futuros
candidatos presidenciales se
están descalificando de competir
cuando, dentro de dos o tres
décadas, las provocativas fotos y
declaraciones que hoy presumen
alegremente y sin verguenza en
Facebook y Twitter, vuelvan a
aparecer.
Esencialmente, lo que suponíamos
privado ha dejado de serlo.
Nadie es inmune. Y en estos días,
cualquiera armado con una computadora
puede buscar y revelar
un secreto de Estado.
La publicación de más de
250,000 documentos del Departamento
de Estado estadounidense
y cables diplomáticos
de sus embajadas y consulados
en todo el mundo nos permite
inspeccionar el engranaje de la
diplomacia de Estados Unidos.
Lo que hace tan fascinantes
estos documentos es el hecho
de que podemos ver lo que está
prohibido.
Este el sueño hecho realidad
de cualquier voyeurista político.
Al leer los documentos de
WikiLeaks estamos ahí, sentados
al lado del embajador, hablando
con el primer ministro, con el
líder de la oposición o con un
general. Aunque no nos invitaron
a la fiesta, podemos escuchar la
música y ver a los invitados a
través de la ventana. Y podemos
escuchar sus conversaciones.
Por supuesto, muchos de esos
cables y memorandos secretos están
llenos de descripciones poco
halagüeñas de líderes mundiales.
Otros consisten en recomendaciones
y proponen cambios de
política; algunos revelan amenazas
(veladas y no tanto); y hasta
hay simples chismes después de
una borrachera.
Pero todos tienen algo en
común: ese tinte de autenticidad,
de verdad. Como lector, uno se
queda con la impresión de que
las acciones y conversaciones
resumidas en estos documentos
son versiones no censuradas de
lo que verdaderamente pasa entre
políticos y diplomáticos -- no lo
que se informa en los diarios, la
televisión o Internet.
Y ésa es una diferencia importante,
dado que asuntos inquietantes
fueron revelados por
WikiLeaks. Algunos ejemplos: el
temor del gobierno mexicano de
“perder” territorio ante los narcos;
las versiones de que espías
cubanos están operando dentro
del gobierno venezolano; y el
peligro de que material nuclear
en Pakistán pueda terminar en
manos de terroristas.
Asuntos médicos también son
revelados, como el supuesto
tumor nasal del Presidente de
Bolivia, Evo Morales, y especulación
acerca de la estabilidad
emocional de la Presidenta Cristina
Fernandez, de Argentina.
Y hasta se mencionan rumores
acerca de la forma de divertirse
de los primeros ministros de
Italia y de Kazajstán. Se detallan
instrucciones a los diplomáticos
estadounidenses para que obtengan
los números de las tarjetas
de crédito de altos funcionarios
de las Naciones Unidas.
Este vistazo íntimo a los mundos
privados de gente influyente
no es algo que les agrade. Julian
Assange, un australiano de 39
años fundador de WikiLeaks, se
encuentra ya en la mira de los
poderosos. Enfrenta acusaciones
de ofensas sexuales en Suecia y
fue arrestado sin derecho a libertad
bajo fianza por un tribunal
en Londres el 7 de diciembre.

Cuando estableces un sueño
y te comprometes a cumplirlo,
mágicamente empiezan a aparecer
señales que te demuestran que
viene en camino lo que anhelas.
Presta atención porque todo es una
pista. ¡Nada es casualidad!
Mi sueño siempre fue trabajar
en el mudo de las comunicaciones.
Pero todos en mi familia me
decían: “las personas que trabajan
en radio, periodismo o televisión,
van directito a la fila de los desempleados”.
Por eso, decidí estudiar
administración de empresas con
una concentración en contabilidad
y acabé trabajando con mi familia
en negocios de restaurantes.
Nunca estuve contenta con
mi empleo pues no me llenaba.
Hasta que un día dije: “Diosito
quiero conseguir un empleo en
el que pueda usar mis talentos,
pero no sé por dónde empezar…
estoy dispuesta a hacer lo que sea
¡ayúdame!”. A los días de hacer
mi petición, mientras viajabe de
Puerto Rico a California, encontré
la primera pista en la revista del
avión. Leí un anuncio de una empresa
que presentaba seminarios
de negociación para ejecutivos,
la propaganda decía: “En la vida
como en los negocios, no obtienes
lo que mereces, obtienes lo que
negocias”. Pensé: “¡que feliz sería
si pudiera dictar conferencias para
una prestigiosa compañía como
esta y tener la oportunidad de viajar
por todo el mundo”. Arranqué
la página y la guardé el anuncio
en mi cartera.
Días después, mientras leía el
periódico en la parte de empleos
encontré otra pista. Un anuncio de
la misma empresa que ahora buscaba
un conferenciante y pensé:
¡que casualidad! sin darme cuenta
que realmente era otra señal. Pude
conseguir este empleo y mi sueño
comenzó a materializarse.
Trabaje con esa empresa varios
años y más pistas siguieron apareciendo,
señalándome el camino
para llegar a convertirme en
motivadora, autora, columnista
nes, argumentando que son una
represalia por el impacto que ha
tenido WikiLeaks. Pero, pase lo
que pase con Assange, el jarrón
de cristal de la confidencialidad
está roto y ya no hay manera de
pegar todas sus partes.
Aun si Assange y WikiLeaks
desaparecieran, otros seguirán
su ejemplo. ¿Por qué? Porque
hay una necesidad urgente de
más transparencia en cuanto a
los actos de los gobiernos -- particularmente
en América Latina.
Yo quisiera saber, por ejemplo,
por qué muchos ex presidentes y
altos funcionarios mexicanos terminan
sus mandatos como multimillonarios,
dado que la suma
de sus salarios no puede explicar
sus fortunas. ¿Cómo le hicieron?
Estoy seguro que la explicación
está escondida en alguna computadora
gubernamental. Basta
el clic de un informante para que
nos enteremos de todo.
Las revelaciones como las
de WikiLeaks llenan un vacío.
Los funcionarios públicos son,
finalmente, empleados que deben
responder a los ciudadanos y están
obligados a dar cuenta de sus
gastos y acciones. Si no lo hacen
voluntariamente, WikiLeaks (o
alguien más) se encargará de
hacerlo por ellos. ¿Es legal? Eso
depende de las leyes de las naciones
involucradas. Pero sospecho
que, en la misma forma en que
Napster cambió la industria de
la música en el 2000 al proponer
que los MP3 debían ser gratis y
compartidos en línea, WikiLeaks
está cambiando la política mundial
al demostrar que nada, ni
los asuntos más confidenciales,
deben ser mantenidos en secreto.
En realidad estamos viviendo
en la conectada, interdependiente
“aldea global” prevista por Marshall
McLuhan hace medio siglo.
Por supuesto, las paredes en torno
a esa aldea se están haciendo más
transparentes y ya nadie se puede
esconder detrás de ellas.

continuidad en los sucesos de tu
vida, ves claramente la conexión
que tiene cada “casualidad”.
Cualquiera que sea tu meta,
abre tus ojos y pon cuidado. Las
coincidencias son pistas. Por
ejemplo, si hoy dices con convicción:
“me comprometo a ahorrar
diez mil dólares”, y cuando vas
caminando por la calle te encuentras
un dólar en el piso, eso es una
pista de que estas atrayendo lo que
has pedido.
De ahora en adelante lleva
cuenta de cada una de las “casualidades”
que te sucedan. Como
buena detective, anótalas en un
diario. Mientras más pistas recopiles
más señales seguirán apareciendo
¡y así te convencerás de
que tu sueño se está cumpliendo!

From this side…lessons learned while traveling

With the end of the year approaching
and families getting
ready to travel and visit family,
I thought I would share with
you lessons I’ve learned while
traveling.
I love traveling and have always
loved it, since I was very
young. My mother would take
me to visit different countries,
some of which have changed
names since that time.
During these vacations, she
never stopped working or left
her chores incomplete. I am still
amazed at how she finished her
work, considering that all chores
were done ‘old school.’ By this
I mean, she did everything with
her bare hands. She didn’t have
technology advances to help her.
Even after her chores, she had
time to cut, sew, and create marvelous
flower arrangements and
take me along on those amazing
voyages.
I remember our travels to
China, England, Brazil, Spain,
and many others, through the
radio programs, allowing our
imagination to fly, while her
busy hands would iron, or even
crochet a tablecloth or two sets
of bedspreads.
If you wonder how these
women did everything, so did
I. Because even with all the resources
we have now, including
washing machines, steam irons,
and of course, the wonderful
HEB frozen section, I still find
it hard, finding time to do it all.
Once again, I realize that some
of the most important lessons in
life that I’ve learned (or I should
have learned) were from a ‘virtual
traveler’… even before ever
leaving home.

en un éxito.
Según la leyenda, la historia
de la Virgen de Guadalupe data
diez años después de la conquista
española, en 1531. Un
indígena de nombre Juan Diego
pasaba por el cerro del Tepeyac
camino hacia la iglesia como lo
acostumbraba.
Al ir en camino escuchó el
sonido de los pájaros que le
nombraban. Juan Diego corrió
hacia el cerro y vio a una joven
llena de luz, que en apariencia
lo hizo sentir que estaba
viendo a una princesa azteca.
Esta princesa le habló en lengua
náhuatl y le encomendó la
tarea de informar al obispo de
México, Juan de Zumárraga,
el deseo de que se le dedicara
un lugar en su honor, en donde
ella demostraría y daría todo su
amor, compasión y protección
a quien se lo pidiera.
Juan Diego siguió la orden
de aquella mujer, sin embargo
su palabra no le fue de mucho
agrado al obispo.
Con gran tristeza en su
corazón, regresó al cerro del
Tepeyac y le hizo saber a la
virgen que quizá un mensajero
con mayor poder debía ser el
indicado en pasar el mensaje,
pero ella insistió en que la misión
debía ser llevada a cabo por
él, por lo que Juan Diego siguió
la orden, y el obispo le pidió
una prueba de lo que aquella
señora le estaba pidiendo.
Esa misma noche, la virgen
le prometió a Juan Diego una
prueba, pero su tío se encontraba
gravemente enfermo.
Al día siguiente, un 12 de
diciembre, decide no ir al
reencuentro con la Virgen de
Guadalupe por la prueba, sino
que se dirige a buscar ayuda
para su tío. La virgen lo interceptó
y le aseguró que su tío no
moriría, pero que debía seguir
con la misión que ella le había
encomendado. Ella le pidió que
subiera al cerro del Tepeyac y
que cortara las flores que encontraría
allí mismo, lo cual no
era común que pasara ya que
durante la época de diciembre
normalmente nada florecía.
Juan Diego cortó las rosas y las
puso en su poncho, a donde la
virgen se acercó, las acomodó
y las envolvió dándole la orden
de que solo el obispo podría
ver esas rosas.
Las rosas fueron mostradas
al obispo y al tomarlas del
poncho se dio cuenta de la
imagen impresa que aparecía
en las vestiduras de Juan
Diego, la cual ahora es conocida
como Nuestra Señora de
Guadalupe.
La historia de la aparición
de la Virgen de Guadalupe
es algo ambigua, pero todo
católico, mexicano, tiene
conocimiento de ella, y es
conmemorada el 12 de diciembre,
día de su aparición. Esta
imagen ha sido tan venerada
y respetada que tanto los líderes
de la Independencia de
México, como los de la Revolución
Mexicana, utilizaron
la imagen de la Virgen de
Guadalupe como un símbolo
de lucha.
En 1990, Juan Diego fue
beatificado por el Papa Juan
Pablo II, quien lo llamó “Confidente
de la dulce Señora del
Tepeyac”. Años más tarde,
Juan Diego fue canonizado,
convirtiéndose en uno de los
santos más admirados por la
Iglesia Católica en México y en
todo el pueblo de Dios.
Existen varios eventos locales
a los que se puede acudir
desde la noche anterior al 12 de
diciembre. Algunos acostumbran
cantarle las mañanitas a
la media noche, y es por esto
que todos los años, el 11 de
diciembre, la Catedral de San
Fernando conmemora a la Virgen
de Guadalupe cantándole
desde las 11 p.m. hasta la media
noche con la compañía de un
mariachi.
El Centro Cultural Aztlán
presentará su exhibición de
arte anual “Celebración a la
Virgen de Guadalupe” el 12
de diciembre de 6 a 8 p.m. en
la Galería Expresión, en donde
se incluirá la participación de
los artistas locales más reconocidos.
La exhibición incluye
obras realizadas con diferentes
técnicas como, acrílicos, acuarelas
y oleo, así como también
esculturas en madera y joyería
hecha a mano, todas las obras
expuestas están inspiradas en
la Virgen de Guadalupe.

Santa Paws is coming to town

You’d better not bark, you’d better
not bite, you’d better not scratch
the sofa tonight… Santa Paws is
coming to town!
This Christmas give the gift of
love by visiting Animal Care Services
(ACS) on Tuesday, December
14 for a treat you won’t want to
miss! Santa Paws will be stopping
by at 11 a.m. to bring some Christmas
cheer to the dogs and cats at
ACS this holiday season –the merry
old elf himself will be bringing a
bag of toys and treats for the pets
at the shelter.
“Each year we try to make something
special for the animals as a
way to give back,” said Lisa Norwood,
public information officer
for Animal Care Services.
During his stay, family members
are encouraged to “lend a paw” by
checking out hundreds of cute furry
friends ACS has to offer. After all,
pets can be a “purrfect” gift for the
holidays.
“All these pets want for Christmas
is to find an adoptive home
so they can be loved and cared for
like they deserve,” added Norwood.
The shelter has several dogs and
cats that are up for adoption and
would make a memorable and longlasting
Christmas for someone on
your gift list. Some of the animals at
this shelter are only days away from
euthanasia, so adoption is certainly
encouraged.
“Unfortunately, this shelter has
to euthanize an average of 40 to 50
animals a day,” stated Norwood, “so
we ask people to consider visiting
Animal Care Services before going
to any other place.”
Adopting a pet from a shelter
can be a very rewarding experience
–just make sure you have the time
and commitment it takes to take care
of your new companion.
“We have an open selection process,”
explained Norwood. “You
can come in the shelter and adopt
almost any animal in sight, and

we’ll make sure it’s healthy and
sound for you to take home.”
Norwood advises those considering
adoption to make an informed

in an apartment,” she stated. “It’s
important to make a wise decision
not only for you, but for the animal
as well.”
She also advises to keep an open
mind. “A lot of people come in with
a certain kind of pet in mind and end
up falling in love with a completely
different animal.”

at the first shelter you visit, and the
adoption process can take time. But
don’t be discouraged –as many dog

towel for mama dogs or cats at the
shelter. “There is so much stuff that
people have lying around the house
that we could put very good use,”
said Norwood. “Something that’s
as simple as old newspapers or a

La función del sistema inmune
es proteger al organismo
de ataques de bacterias, virus y
células cancerosas. No obstante,
unas células de este sistema, las T

tejidos de la misma persona que
las produjo, algo semejante a lo
que podríamos llamar un autogol.
A este proceso se le conoce como
autoinmunidad.
El proceso de autoinmunidad
provoca enfermedades crónicas
como la artritis reumatoide, la
esclerosis múltiple y la diabetes
tipo 1, entre otras. Existen medicamentos
que atacan a estas células;
sin embargo, de la misma
manera destruyen a las que están
programadas para atacar ya sea
infecciones o células cancerosas.
Aunque mitigan los síntomas de
la enfermedad crónica, dejan al
organismo totalmente desprotegido
en contra de cualquier tipo
de infección que en estos casos

Simpson disagrees completely.
“In a situation like the one at
Virginia Tech, you’d be defenseless,”
he said. “The first duty of
government is to protect human
life and to protect the right of an
individual to protect himself,” the
representative-elect added.
“The real point of the matter is
that criminals won’t abide by existing
prohibitions and disarming
law-abiding citizens makes them
easy targets and victims of lawbreakers,”
Simpson told La Prensa.
In a recent staff editorial in the
University Star, the TSU student
newspaper, the student staff wrote,
“As long as there is adequate training
and screening, the editorial
board supports allowing concealed
handguns on campus. Legislation
in January that would limit universities’
power to encroach on
a Constitutional right would be
welcomed.”
Commenting on the editorial,
which supports concealed-carry
on campus for the first time, a
TSU student made the point that
recently, students on campus had
been advised not to leave property
in their car.
In an article about crime at TSU,
Sgt. Byron Mobley of the San
Marcos Police Department said,
“There’s nothing you can do to
stop stereo (theft), but don’t leave
250 CD’s (in your car), don’t leave
your wallet, your purse, credit
cards, cash or jewelry.”
The student asks, “Why force
me to leave my gun there? …
which is more likely to fall into the
wrong hands, the one concealed …
or the one in my car?”
The fact is someone next to you
could be a CHL holder carrying a
concealed weapon this very minute.
CHL holders carry concealed
weapons into movie theaters, the
grocery store, and festivals like
Austin City Limits.
Simpson points out these individuals
go through extensive
training and rigorous testing,
including a range test and written
test, and have no criminal history
or juvenile record. Holders must
also be eligible to purchase a
handgun by completing a NICS
check, the National Instant Criminal
Background Check System.
Passing the NICS is required by
law (the Brady Handgun Violence
Prevention Act of 1993) to buy a
gun so firearms don’t fall into the
wrong hands.
Not wanting to encroach on
private property rights, Simpson
is currently amending the bill to
allow private universities and colleges
to opt out of the measure. But
those schools should be certain
they could protect their students
in every case – or find themselves
liable in the event of campus
violence.
“Schools may opt out and take
responsibility for the protection of
individuals, but in so doing, in the
event of a tragedy, they could lose
some immunity,” Simpson said.
CHL holders could include

Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives), the suit asserts, “At
eighteen years of age, law-abiding
citizens in this country are considered
adults for almost all purposes
and certainly for the purposes
of the exercise of fundamental
constitutional rights. Indeed, at
eighteen, citizens are eligible (and
male citizens could be conscripted)
to serve in the military-to fight
and die by arms for the country.
Yet, Section 922(b)(1) prohibits
law-abiding adults in this age
group from lawfully purchasing
-- from the most prevalent and
readily available source -- what
the Supreme Court has called
“the quintessential self-defense
weapon” and “the most popular
weapon chosen by Americans for
self-defense in the home.”

for the Civil Division of the U.S.
Department of Justice responded
to questions about the lawsuit
earlier this week. “The government
will file its reply brief on
Dec. 17. The brief should lay out
the government’s position,” he
said. DOJ also offered to provide
the brief to La Prensa at that time.
The NRA says plaintiff D’Cruz
is well trained in the proper handling
and use of firearms, including
handguns, thanks to his grandfather,
a World War II veteran,
who wanted his grandchildren to
understand the proper and safe
techniques for use and storage of
firearms.
D’Cruz received further training
from his father and as a member
of the Navy Junior Reserve
Officer’s Training Corps, where
he achieved the rank of Lieutenant
Junior Grade. During his junior
and senior years of high school, as
a member of the JROTC’s marksmanship
team he competed in regional
and national marksmanship
competitions and earned a first
place medal for marksmanship in
a regional competition.
Both sides of the age and CHL
holders issue offer reasonable
arguments – and it will take
months before either issue will be
resolved. Texas may be the land
of young guns once again, and
only time will tell how the story
plays out.

results have taken to protesting
violently, closing down
the Port-au-Prince airport on
Wednesday.
The situation is so precarious
that in the last couple of days,
Canada closed its embassy there
and the US Dept of State issued
a strongly worded warning to
Americans to avoid all nonessential
travel there. The pagelong
warning reads, in part: “The
level of violent crime in Portau-Prince,
including murder and
kidnapping, remains high, and
Haitian authorities have limited
capacity to deter or investigate
such acts…”
Still, Miller is not deterred.
“I’m not too worried, I just got off
the phone with Dr. Mark Welch
[in Haiti] who says they rarely
direct violence against Americans
… they know we are there to
help,” he said.
His main concern is that people
are dying, and with the EZ-IO he
could save lives right away.
“They are out of supply right
now. People are going to be
dying every day because they
can’t get IV’s started, so I think
it’s extremely urgent that I get
down there with this equipment,”
Miller said.
The UN Office for the Coordination
of Humanitarian Affairs
(OCHA) reported there is still
a critical need, not only in the
camps but also throughout the
country, to provide people with
information on how to prevent
cholera, which is transmitted
through contaminated water and
food.
Cholera causes diarrhea and
vomiting, and the resulting dehydration
causes the veins to collapse.
Many cholera victims die
of dehydration because there is
simply no way to introduce fluids.
Miller, the chair and chief
medical officer of VidaCare
Corporation, in collaboration
with the University of Texas
Health Sciences Center (UTHSC)
developed the EZ-IO, the world’s
first battery powered IO device
that provides vascular access in
less than five seconds. It saves
lives because it provides essential
treatment for patients suffering

from shock due to trauma or for
those who are severely dehydrated
for any reason, like cholera.
The device gives medical professionals
access to a large noncollapsible
vein – the bone marrow
– because its design allows
them to infuse liquids and drugs
into patients by inserting needles
into the bone.
Miller and his associates at the
UTHSC worked on the device
from 1994 until 2001. The physician
had been puzzling over
an easy way to get access to the
bone marrow for patients with
collapsed veins. The trick was to
figure out how to power through
the bone – the biggest obstacle.
Miller remembers he woke up
in the middle of the night thinking
about his father’s machine shop.
He recalled a small oil-cooled
hollow drill his father used.
“I thought, my dad’s little drill
will work,” he said. “Moreover,
the concept worked as expected
in the lab.”
The apparatus, which looks
just like a mini-drill, uses a specially
made needle that attaches
magnetically The ideal spot to
insert the needle is the tibia in
front of the knee or the shoulder,
at the head of the humerus, Miller
explained.
“It doesn’t hurt very much going
in … the main pain is going
through the skin, and the bone
isn’t innervated so that doesn’t
hurt. The main pain is when the
fluid rushes in,” he explained.
Now, Miller has several duffels
filled with the life-saving medical
equipment – and he plans to
be on his way to Haiti as soon as
the airport there re-opens. He said
his ride, another Good Samaritan
who volunteered his time and
plane, was ready to go, too.
“Any time we get the clearance
to go to Haiti, we’ll be off, and
we’re ready. We’re packed and I
can’t wait to get there. I may be
gone over the holidays. If I get
the word on Christmas Eve, I’m
going,” he said.
Even though Miller will be
taking more than 1200 EZ-IO
needles and enough drivers for
people to use them with, he is
already thinking about what will
happen when they run out of supplies.
Just the needles cost $99
per patient.
“We are looking for the community
to help us … anyone who
can donate to help us replace the
supplies can donate to Project
Hope,” he said.
Miller has a long history of
caring for patients, leading and
thinking outside the box.
He is the medical director of
and co-founded the Bulverde-
Spring Branch Emergency Medical
Service (EMS) in 1976. He
was medical director for the
Shock Trauma Advanced Team
(STAT) that provided medical
support and treated the injured
during the Branch Davidian siege
in Waco, Texas in 1993; and he
is currently the medical director
of 15 EMS organizations across
the state.
Miller practiced emergency
medicine for 30 years in one of
Texas’ largest hospital systems.
Since training at Chicago’s Cook
County Hospital, where he earned
the “Intern of the Year” Award in
1966, he has treated more than
125,000 emergency patients. The
good doctor even found time to
author a book, Never Get Sick on
the First of July, about his experiences
in emergency medicine.
The inventor side of Miller
always seems to look for the better
way to do something – a more
efficient way to help patients. He
has successfully developed and
commercialized several medical
products in his role as founder
or senior executive of five medical
device and pharmaceutical
companies, including LifeQuest
Medical Inc. (NASDAQ LQMD),
where as cofounder and chair he
acquired worldwide rights to the
Osteoport and to the First Med
System developed by scientists
at UTHSC. The Osteoport was
selected by Popular Science as
one of the 100 greatest achievements
in science and technology
for 1991. He has been awarded 30
patents for intraosseous devices
and obtained FDA approval for
more than 15 indications and
devices.
Miller has five children and
10 grandchildren, and today he
celebrates his 35th wedding anniversary
with Mrs. Miller here
in San Antonio thanks to the
unfortunate flight delay.

The Bulls’ Carlos Boozer gets
a medical deferment because he
missed so much time after breaking
his hand in training camp. The
player who got the most money
last summer, Atlanta’s Joe Johnson,
didn’t exactly take his game
to a new level before recently
requiring elbow surgery that will
keep him on the shelf until the
New Year, at least.
So here’s where we’ll show
Stoudemire some love. With
his high energy, scoring (25.7
ppg), board work (9.1 rpg) and
shot-blocking (1.9 pg), he has
rejuvenated one of the sorriest
franchises in the NBA. So far,
you have to say that he has been
worth the $100 million he received
last July. When the Knicks
started off at 3-8, he never once
wavered in his role as the team’s
new leader. You bet that didn’t go
unnoticed by the team’s coaching
staff and front-office brass.
Most Underrated Acquisition
The Bobcats figure in both
of our top candidates, which
might help to explain why Larry
Brown’s team is headed for the
lottery after making the playoffs
last spring for the first time in
franchise history. Tyson Chandler
and Raymond Felton played for
Charlotte last season and are shining
in their new homes.
Chandler (8.8 ppg, 9.3 rpg,
1.4 blocks in only 26.6 mpg) has
given the Mavs a defensive presence
in the middle that they’ve
long been seeking. After they
gave Stoudemire the keys to
the franchise, the Knicks went
looking for a point guard. They
decided to sign Felton, but to only
a two-year deal, since they’ve got
eyes for Chris Paul and Deron
Williams, each of whom turns
free in 2012.
In going with Felton over Steve
Blake and Luke Ridnour, the
Knicks have gotten career-bests
in scoring (18.6 ppg) and shooting
(47%) from Felton, with 8.6
assists per outing and some hellacious
on-the-ball D. But with
the Mavs’ torrid start against
better competition, we’ll go with
Chandler.
Worst moves
It’s a good thing the Bucks’
John Hammond won Executive of
the Year last season, because let’s
just say his signings and trades
haven’t worked out very well
this season. The Bucks imported
Corey Maggette, Drew Gooden
and Chris Douglas-Roberts to
give them depth and scoring, but
the Bucks have been one of the
most disappointing teams, losing
13 of their first 21. The loss of
Carlos Delfino’s 13 ppg, along
with John Salmons and Brandon
Jennings each shooting under 40
percent from the floor, has not
helped Scott Skiles’ cause.
Coach of the Year
Jerry Sloan lost a key component
when Boozer left Utah for
Chicago, but the Jazz have not
lost a beat with a 16-7 mark. Who
knows, Sloan might even be good
enough to get Al Jefferson, Boozer’s
replacement, to start playing
the kind of defense that Utah is
known for. The Jazz’s sweeping
of games at Miami, Orlando
and Atlanta in a four-day stretch
and all of the comeback variety,
is hard to top. Included in that
was Paul Millsap’s astounding
46-point night against Miami’s
Big Three, perhaps the top individual
effort of the season so far.
Trade They’re Gonna Regret
When the Hornets either are
forced to deal Chris Paul or
lose him to free agency in 2012,
they’re going to wish they never
traded Darren Collison to the
Pacers in landing Trevor Ariza
from Houston. Collison has been
exactly what the Pacers have
needed in putting a winning team
on the floor.
Rookie of the Year
It’s a bad year for John Wall to
be a rookie … and everyone else
who was drafted last June, for
that matter. The Clippers’ Blake
Griffin is one of those rare players
who will make the All-Star
Game right out of the box. He’s
got the whole package _ the game
(20 ppg on 51 percent shooting,
11.7 rpg,) , the off-the-charts
athleticism that leads to some of
the most eye-popping dunks in
all of basketball, and a winning
personality. Now if we can just
find him a legitimate franchise
to play for …
Glad to See You Back
It seemed as if Richard Jefferson
went through the motions last
season, his first with the Spurs.
But in giving San Antonio 14.6
ppg on 49 percent shooting, and
43 percent on 3-pointers, he has
been one of the reasons the Spurs
have jetted to the top of the West.
Most Regressed Player
Since heading to the bench on
Nov. 20, Memphis’ O.J. Mayo
is averaging only nine points
per game and hasn’t exactly embraced
his role as a reserve for
Lionel Hollins. That’s less than
half of what he averaged two
years ago as a rookie and well
down from his production last
season (17.5 ppg). The Grizzlies
were expected to challenge for
the eighth playoff spot, but are
in 10th place in the West and five
games under .500.

play in Valero Alamo Bowl

The Valero Alamo Bowl is set
as officials with the University
of Arizona and Oklahoma State
University accepted invitations
to play each other in a game
scheduled on Wednesday, Dec.
29 in downtown San Antonio.
The Arizona Wildcats enter
the game with a 7-5 record and
finished fifth in the Pac-10 Conference.
The OSU Cowboys are
10-2 and missed out on a Big 12
title game with a late-season loss
to Oklahoma.
The Wildcats are here as a result
of the Alamo Bowl partner-

Just before midnight in the Boston
Red Sox suite, I trust there were
raised glasses and scribbling ballpoints.
What do you think, guys? Ellsbury,
Pedroia, Crawford, Youkilis,
Gonzalez? Or do you put Gonzalez
right after Crawford, since Carl
can jog home from first on those
Wall doubles? Oh wait, what about
Big Papi? Almost forgot about him.
MUHAHAHAHA!
Yeah, the Red Sox missed the
playoffs. But they just cold-cocked
the winter meetings.
On Sunday, it was Adrian Gonzalez.
On Wednesday, it was Carl
Crawford. On Opening Day, it will
be the unveiling of Boston’s most
exciting baseball team since the days
of Manny Ramirez’s brilliant and
mercurial prime.
Of course, the money was huge.
That much was a given. Crawford
will be paid $142 million over seven
years. Despite never hitting 20 home
runs in a major-league season, he
just agreed to the richest long-term
contract (by average annual value)
of any outfielder in history.
But the size of a man’s paycheck
can stir only so much emotion.
Crawford’s contract matters insofar
as it tells us where we can watch him
between now and 2017. And on that
subject, I am prepared to make the
following proclamation:
This summer, I will be flipping to
NESN’s Don Orsillo for the Crawford
Innings.
The 2011 Red Sox promise the
unknown, a collection of speed and
power not seen at Fenway Park in a
very long time. This year’s team, by
comparison, wasn’t terribly entertaining.
The last group of hires — Adrian
Beltre, John Lackey, Mike Cameron,
Marco Scutaro — included good,
professional ballplayers. But they
didn’t resonate with casual fans.
Gonzalez will. Crawford will. This
team will.
The Red Sox needed this. They
needed Gonzalez to hold a press
conference during which he declared,
“I’m ready to beat the Yanks.” They
needed to deny the Angels — a
frequent postseason foe — the freeagent
speedster who seemed so
perfect for them.
Is Crawford ready for Red Sox
Nation, and all the pressures that go
along with performing before such a
frenzied constituency? I don’t know.
Crawford doesn’t always make the
correct fundamental plays. That sort
of thing can be a big, big problem in
Boston. Case in point: He ran into the
final out of a September game against
the Yankees on an ill-advised tag-up
to third base.
But if you steal home the next
night, you’re a Fenway idol again.
And Crawford is capable of doing
that. In fact, he is capable of most
things on a baseball field.
Crawford has led the league in
triples four times. He is coming off
career highs in home runs (19) and
runs scored (110). Let’s just say he
should be able to take John Valentin’s
old No. 13 without much trouble.
And if we may, let’s revisit that
hotel notepad lineup: Terry Francona’s
first three hitters could indeed
be Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia
and Crawford. Pedroia and Crawford
ing with Pac-10 earlier this year.

Ellsbury led the American League
in stolen bases in all but one season.
After watching Crawford and the
Tampa Bay Rays terrorize catcher
Victor Martinez, perhaps the Red
Sox resolved to make speed a greater
element of their own team.
The result could be an atypical
American League lineup, one that
doesn’t feature a true run producer in
any of the top three spots. But that’s

Let’s call the Crawford signing
what it was: a bold and savvy maneuver
by general manager Theo Epstein.
A boost to Boston’s very legitimate
world championship hopes. A message
of menace directed at the Yankees
and Angels. A response to the
36.6 percent drop in local television
ratings. Clear evidence that failed
seasons — i.e. missing the postseason
— aren’t tolerated in Boston.
Arizona appears in its third
consecutive bowl game, matching
the best previous string from
1992-94.
The Wildcats will play an OSU
team that is 0-2 lifetime in the
Alamo Bowl, losing to Purdue
(1997) and Ohio State (2004).
“We’re very excited to represent
the Big 12 Conference
against a quality Pac-10 Conference
opponent,” said Cowboys
head coach Mike Gundy on the
school web site. “It will be a
great bowl week in San Antonio
for our student-athletes and
fans.”
The game kicks off at 8 p.m.
on ESPN.
It was all of those things. Mostly,
though, it restores the Boston Red
Sox to the unquestioned forefront
of baseball discussion across the
country. The San Francisco Giants
are the champions and a great story.
But already, the Red Sox have seized
the headlines. In Gonzalez and now
Crawford, they have charismatic stars
who inspire a natural curiosity in the
viewing public.
They are talented. They are rich.
And to paraphrase Gonzalez, they
are here to beat the Yanks.
The best part about Carl Crawford?
He’s done that before.

Browns are coming off an excellent
road win versus the Dolphins
in which they picked off Chad
Henne three times. The Bills didn’t
look as if they were playing with
the same fire last week as they did
in weeks prior, but this doesn’t
mean they won’t come out on
fire. I think the Bills have trouble
moving the ball against what has
become a very respectable defense
lead by Rob Ryan. Browns win
21-17.
Cinncinnati @ Pittsburgh:
The Bengals have quite the disappointing
season in thus far. Last
week they made a very big mistake
deep in their own redzone when
they jumped offsides against Drew
Brees and the Saints which lead
to a go ahead TD pass and yet
another loss. The Steelers played
a very bruising game and won on
the road at Baltimore and look
to continue their excellent play
by pounding the rock against the
24th ranked rush defense. Steelers
win 28-13.
Green Bay @ Detroit: The
Lions played very tough against
the Bears but in the end they
couldn’t quite make enough plays
to come out on top. The Packers
took care of business against the
49ers at home behind 298 yards
passing from Aaron Rodgers. The
Packers are feeling quite confident

Tampa Bay @ Washington:
The Bucs had a lead late last week
against the Falcons, but unfortunately
they gave it up. They played
very well, but it’s very tough to
win when you have nine penalties
for 102 yards. The Redskins are
struggling, especially defensively,
where they rank 32nd in total yards
allowed per contest. The Bucs win
by running the football 28-17.
Atlanta @ Carolina: The Faloncs
are tied with the Patriots for
the best record in the NFL at 10-2,
and are averaging 25.3 points per
game. The Panthers have only
won one game and have 2 terrific
running backs on injured reserve.
They expect big things out of Mike
Goodson, but it won’t be enough
to win. Falcons win 28-10.
Oakland @ Jacksonville:
The Raiders are very strong at
running the football and when
they get quality quarterback play
they will be in games late with a
year. It just didn’t show on the field
on this day.
Just when the Brahmas appeared
to get back into the game, Brown
would respond.
In the second quarter, Mac tight
end Jace Amaro caught a 61-yard
touchdown pass to close the gap
but Brown then responded with a
47-yard score.
Just as the third quarter began,
Brown showed just how human
he can be when he mishandled a
kickoff, fumbling the ball back to
the Brahmas inside the 20-yard line.
Amaro went on to score his
second touchdown pass, this one
for 1 yard but MacArthur still had
a 21-14 defecit.
Steele then iced the game with
three consecutive touchdowns.
Amaro scored the last MacArthur
touchdown for 26 yards.
Steele moved on to play an
upstart Houston Memorial team,
which improved to 9-5 on the
season.
Their state semifinal game was
played at Heroes Stadium on Saturday.
Class 5A state title games will
be played at Cowboys Stadium in
Arlington next Saturday.

with Alex Smith. 49ers win a
key game 23-21.
St. Louis @ New Orleans: The
Rams are a quality team. They
have a terrific pass rush lead by
Chris Long, an excellent running
game and a young quarterback
who doesn’t make many mistakes.
In the future the Rams will be
a very good team, but they are
playing the defending Super Bowl
champions on the road. Look for
the Rams struggle to move the ball
and loses 27-17.
Miami @ NY Jets:The Dolphins
are coming off a heartbreaking
loss, allowing 252 total yards.
We all know the Jets offense isn’t
the Browns offense. After the
humiliation suffered on national
television versus last week, Jets
bounce back and win a tough
divisional match up 28-21.
Denver @ Arizona: The Cardinals
are just down-right putrid
offensively—they can’t run the
ball and their passing game is
non-existent. Partially due to the
poor offensive line play, however
most is due in large part to Derek
Anderson. The Broncos have Kyle
Orton who’s thrown 20 TD’s and
only six picks this year almost
entirely without a running game.
I like the Broncos to win their first
game under interim head coach
Eric Studesville 28-13.
Kansas City @ San Diego:
The Chiefs beat the Chargers
night 21-14. They largely rely on
their terrific rushing attack, which
leads the league with 175.2 yards
per game, but don’t sleep on Matt
Cassel who has thrown 23 TD’s
and just 4 picks. The Chargers
laid an egg last week, yet the tides
will turn again against another
divisional foe. Chargers bounce
back and win 24-17.
New England @ Chicago: The
Patriots lead the league in scoring
offense and just dropped 45 points
on a solid Jets defense. The Bears
defense though is 3rd in scoring
only allowing 16 points per game.
The Patriots are too balanced and
too hot to lose this week. Patriots
win a close affair 21-17.
Philadelphia @ Dallas: The
Eagles will be well rested after
beating the Texans on a Thursday
night behind 302 yards passing
from Michael Vick. The Cowboys
just played their best game of the
year after beating the Colts on the
road forcing fourinterceptions of
Peyton Manning. The Eagles are
very balanced and will keep the
Cowboys defense guessing. The
Eagles win 28-24.
Baltimore @ Houston: The
Texans have shown that they ‘re
just going to have to out score people
and will prove to be difficult
against one of the best defenses
in the league. The Ravens will
be hungry as well, because they
are coming off an even tougher
loss to the hated Steelers. It was
a game that they felt they should
have won, but came up short in the
end. I like the Ravens to win with
defense 28-17.

la operación continua de una trituradora de piedra portátil ubicada en 6889 East Evans Road, San Antonio, Condado
de Bexar, Texas 78266. La planta existente tiene la autorización de emitir los siguientes contaminantes atmosféricos:
materia partícula incluyendo materia partícula con diámetros de 10 micrones o menos y 2.5 micrones o menos.
Esta solicitud se le presentó al TCEQ el 16 de noviembre de 2010. La solicitud estará disponible para ser revisada

are donating millions of
pounds of food to the Food Bank.

Texans who don’t have access to
the food they need with a special
holiday drive that requires no

At a press conference on Tuesday,

approach that will engage everyone
in the battle against hunger
through a Facebook campaign.

than 800 residents gathered at
The Bill Greehey Arena at St.
Mary’s University for the fourth
SA2020 meeting, a communitywide
visioning process that discusses
the future of San Antonio
by the year 2020. The goal is to
develop a long-range plan that
includes specific, achievable
goals that make the city one of
and effortless way for everyone
to participate through Facebook.
“Hunger doesn’t happen just
around the holidays,” Jeff McAllister,
Walmart senior vice president
for Texas, said. “That’s
why this holiday, through the
Facebook campaign, Walmart
will donate $1 million to the community
with the most support and
$100,000 to the next five communities
that top the list.”
The Food Research and Action
Center identified the food hardship
rate for 100 of the largest
communities in America, and the
100 metropolitan areas selected
to participate in this drive were
also identified as having the
highest rates of food hardship
for 2010, according to the Food
Research and Action Center
(FRAC).
To get involved in the Facebook
campaign, all you need to
do is browse the selected communities
on the Walmart page
and “like” the one that you think
needs the money the most.
As of Wednesday morning, six
communities are leading to get a
shot at the extra help – the winner
of the $1 million donation is the
one that gets the most support
through your vote. The current
leaders are Fresno, Ca; Grand
Rapids-Wyoming, MI; San Antonio,
TX; Buffalo- Niagara Falls,
NY; Tulsa, OK; and Cape Coral-

into groups, residents discussed

discussed were transportation,
education, teen pregnancy, arts
and culture, and economic competitiveness.
“I’m blown away by the
amount of participation and engagement
from the community,”
said Byrd. “This is a time when
people are working very hard at
their jobs, families are growing,
it’s a busy time of the year –you
would think they wouldn’t have
the time to express their dreams
of what they want for San Antonio,
and it’s happened four times
already. People are starting to see
San Antonio not for the next 24
hours, but for the next 10 years.”

Last month, the Alamo Area
Council of San Antonio Boy Scouts
celebrated the conclusion of its
four-year “Campaign for Timeless
Values.”
The campaign raised $10 million
to fund projects such as a new leadership
development center, Scout
ranch and task force to reach youth
from San Antonio’s south and west
sides of town.
“We feel great about it we
launched the campaign several years
ago,” said Michael Amini president
of the Alamo Area council. “We initiated
this move to the Southside and
that was a big part of the campaign. “
“We’ve got several projects
where we are going to spend the
money,” he added.
As Amini further explained, it
was important for the Alamo Area
Council of San Antonio Boy Scouts
had a physical presents on the Southside
where they could launch their
program.
The $10 million will be split into
five major projects:
• Scoutreach Leadership Development
Center
• Mays Family Scout Ranch
• Improvements at Mc Giemsey
Scout Park
• Improvements to the Bexar
Creek Scout Camp
• Programs and endowments
The Scoutreach Leadership Development
center is already open on
the Southside and the Mays family
scout ranch is under construction.
The ranch covers 70 acres and sits
on the Medina River.
The ranch will be used for a new
camp for the Boy Scouts to use in the
future and provide a place for them
on the Southside to train.
“I believe in the program and I
know what it can do to change lives
and we are about life change,” said
Amini. “We want to improve the
lives of kids and families on the
Southside.”
The Alamo Area Council of San
Antonio Boy Scouts serves more
than 29,000 youth members in Cub
Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops,
Venture Crews and Explorer Posts.

the ability to feed 58,000 people
each week. He also spoke about
the power of the dinner table.
“The dinner table strengthens
the family, and in turn, strengthens
the community,” he began.
According to Cooper, 72 percent
of kids that gather together
around the dinner table each
week with their families are more
likely to engage in conversation,
sharing personal trials and
struggles with their parents. In
addition, 45 percent of teens are
less likely to drink, 66 percent
are less likely to do drugs, and
58 percent are more likely to go
to college.
Mayor Castro was pleased with
the turnout, saying: “We came almost
three months ago with the
dream of thinking through the
next 10 years for San Antonio,
what we want to look like as a
city. We do have many dreams
for our city but only those dreams
can come true if everyone works
together to create that future.”

Gene Cortez recibe premio “Bien Hecho”

Eugenio Reynosa Cortez, conocido
entre sus colegas como “Gene
Cortez”, fue seleccionado por un
panel de jurados independientes de
los medios hispanos como merecedor
de los primeros premios “Bien
Hecho”, que otorga la marca Scott.
Celebrado por primera vez, este
homenaje fue creado por la marca
Scott para reconocer a personas
comunes que han realizado tareas
extraordinarias para ayudar a la
comunidad hispana.
En nombre del alcalde Julián
Castro, la concejal de San Antonio,
Ivy Taylor, dio unas palabras a
Cortez sobre el premio que le fue
otorgado.
“Estamos muy contentos de
que este premio le pertenezca a
una persona de San Antonio que
por muchos años ha realizado un
trabajo que es indispensable para
la comunidad”, comentó Taylor.
En total existen ocho ganadores,
los cuales provienen de distintas
zonas del país como, Miami, Chicago,
Los Ángeles, Union City,
Nueva Jersey, Houston y San
Antonio. Cada uno recibe $2,000 y
una placa, además de un donativo
de $5,000 para su obra benéfica
preferida. En el caso de Gene Cortez,
la donación fue otorgada a la
Cruz Roja de San Antonio por su
colaboración con él y con su esposa.
Se le fue otorgado un premio

Después de una carrera de 23
años en el ejército militar, Cortez
regresó al vecindario en donde permaneció

Al terminar su servicio militar,
Cortez asistió a Our Lady of the
Lake University (OLLU) en donde

Festividad navideña Silver Bells se celebró en el corazón de la ciudad

El corazón de la ciudad, Main Plaza, se vistió de luces el
domingo pasado con la festividad Silver Bells, en la que se
encendió un Árbol de Navidad a las 7 de la noche en medio
de aplausos del público que acudió a la ceremonia sin que los
detuviera el frio decembrino.
Presidió la ceremonia Bill Scanian, presídente de la institución
Main Plaza Conservancy, quien acompañado por David Zamora,
el cual tuvo a su cargo la decoración del árbol navideño. También
asistió Cara Garza, quien fue comisionada para decorar
el kiosco adyacente a la Catedral de San Fernando.
El programa incluyó la visita de Santa Claus que estuvo
disponible para fotografiarse con niños y grupos familiares.
La festividad fue amenizada por el conjunto Invincible Czars
que interpretaron música de “El Cascanueces” de Tchaikovsky.

El Ford Christmas River Parade iluminó el centro de la ciudad

El Rio San Antonio se convirtió en una serpentina de luces de
colores en la celebración anual Ford Christmas River Parade, patrocinada
por las agencias Ford que atrajo a miles de espectadores
a lo largo del Paseo Del Rio, y mantuvo en sus asientos a todos
los comensales en los restaurantes ubicados a lo largo del Paseo.
Veinte barcas adornadas e iluminadas con múltiples luces de
colores crearon un bello espectáculo desbordante de entusiasmo,
tanto del público asistente como de los participantes en dichas
embarcaciones patrocinadas por diferentes empresas e instituciones
comerciales.
El Ford Christmas River Parade tiene el propósito de divertir
y alentar el espíritu navideño y crear una ventana para mostrar
al turismo internacional el ambiente amigable y de fiesta, que
prevalece en San Antonio y en especial en el Paseo Del Rio.

television network, is on the verge
of an ambitious expansion phase
to consolidate its market share in
the United States and broaden its
international alliances.
Telemundo president Don
Browne said the $35 billion merger
of Comcast and NBC Universal
(still awaiting approval from the
Federal Communications Commission)
will facilitate the undertaking
of a series of investments
the firm hopes will lead to more
business.
The new NBC Universal will
allow Telemundo “to continue
growing with quality content in
all the possible distribution platforms,”
Browne said.
He said that certainly the new
managers at Comcast will need a
little time to learn Telemundo’s
business and they will understand
the importance of continuing the
expansion in the Hispanic market.
“The magnitude of the business
in the Hispanic market is such that
the companies that are not already
there will find themselves forced
to fully enter it,” said Browne, a
veteran of four decades in the U.S.
television industry.
Browne said that the 2010
Census figures will confirm the
importance of the Hispanic market,
something that for Telemundo
will underscore the importance of
“broadening and deepening the
production of original content with
new studios and greater talent on
and off camera.”
“We need to be more aggressive
to have a greater volume of
business both within the United
States and internationally,” the
Telemundo chief said, adding that
the firm is currently allocating
about $100 million to the production
of original content.
Without citing figures, Browne
said that the investments by the
new NBC Universal in Telemundo
will be devoted to expanding
production, improving marketing
plans to make the network’s
original content better known and
improving distribution systems.
As an example of the expansion
already under way at Telemundo.
Browne cited the importance of
joint production with Spain’s
Antena 3 of a soap opera based
on Spanish writer Arturo Perez
Reverte’s work “La Reina del
Sur,” which will be filmed in the

La cápsula privada Dragon
completa viaje espacial “histórico”
(EFE).- La cápsula Dragon,
de la empresa privada SpaceX,
amerizó en el océano Pacífico, tras
completar con éxito su primer viaje
espacial, que la NASA calificó de
“histórico”.
Con el amerizaje concluye el
primer viaje de Dragon, una cápsula
diseñada para transportar en el
futuro carga a la Estación Espacial
Internacional (EEI).
El director de la agencia espacial
estadounidense (NASA),
Charles Bolden, destacó en un
comunicado como un “hecho
histórico” el primer viaje espacial
del Dragon, que regresó a la atmósfera
después de completar dos
órbitas terrestres, tras ser lanzada
por el cohete Falcon 9 desde Cabo
Cañaveral,Florida.
“Mientras el lanzamiento de
cohetes son consideraos hechos
comunes, el significado histórico
de lo logrado por SpaceX no debe
ser perdido”, explicó Bolden poco
después de que se completara con
éxito el primer viaje espacial de
una cápsula lanzada por una empresa
privada.
Este viaje “muestra cómo el Gobierno
y la industria pueden compartir
financiación y conocimientos
para impulsar una nueva y vibrante
economía espacial”, agregó.
El control de la misión reveló,
a través de la página web de la
NASA, que el lanzamiento se
había desarrollado de forma “satisfactoria”
y que, minutos después,
la cápsula Dragon, que transporta
el Falcon 9, se separó del módulo
principal.
Dragon completó dos órbitas
completas alrededor de la tierra,

attract 21 percent of the TV audience
compared with 65 percent for
Univision among viewers in the
key 18-to-49 demographic.
The network reaches 94 percent
of Hispanics in the United
States in 210 markets through its
14 network-owned stations and
affiliates.
Besides the main network, Telemundo
also provides content via
a cable channel directed at young
Hispanics, Mun2, which reaches
more than 30 million homes via
cable, satellite and broadcast.
Also, Telemundo Digital Media
takes advantage of original content
from Telemundo for distribution
via digital platforms like mobile
devices.

Informe revela el “estancamiento” en
la educación en los Estados Unidos
(EFE).- El último informe
PISA publicado revela un “estancamiento”
en la educación en los
Estados Unidos, un problema que
según el secretario de Educación,
Arne Duncan, tendrá “consecuencias
devastadoras” si no se toman
las medidas necesarias en los
próximos años.
“Cada año los estudiantes de
otros países aprenden más que
nuestros escolares, esa es la definición
del problema”, dijo Duncan
en un encuentro con la prensa,
donde estuvo acompañado por
Ángel Gurría, secretario general
de la Organización para la Cooperación
y Desarrollo Económico
(OCDE), que ha elaborado el
estudio.
De los 34 países de la OCDE,
los Estados Unidos se situó en
el puesto 14 en comprensión de
lectura, en el 17 en ciencia y en el
puesto 25 en matemáticas.
“Una nota media en ciencia,
significa mediocridad. Especialmente
en un mundo competitivo
basado en la economía del conocimiento”,
afirmó al comentar los
resultados del informe PISA.
Para Duncan, el reporte de la
OCDE “revela información crucial
de las demandas educativas
del país” y está “repleto de lecciones
para los Estados Unidos”.
Un elemento preocupante para
el secretario de Educación es que
la educación “se ha estancado”,
y exigió una “mirada humilde y
realista” a la situación educativa
del país.
Duncan subrayó que el informe
PISA que muestra cómo los Estados
Unidos cayó desde el segundo
lugar en número de graduados en
1995 al número 13 en 2009.
El informe de la OCDE revela,
asimismo, que la calificación de
los Estados Unidos bajó 5 puntos
respecto a la obtenida en el informe
del año 2000.
Duncan no dudó en señalar
como “devastadoras” las consecuencias
para la economía
estadounidense en los próximos
años “si no hacemos algo”.
“Los trabajos cualificados se
irán a otros países, en un momento
que necesitamos crear trabajos
aquí”, explicó Duncan, al referirse
al alto nivel de desempleo
existente en el país, cuya tasa en el
último mes situó en 9.8 por ciento.
El secretario de Educación se
refirió también al altísimo número
de escolares que dejan los estudios,
y que situó en un “25 por
ciento anual”.
“Esto significa que estamos
perdiendo casi un millón de estudiantes
al año, que dejan las
escuelas para irse a la calle”,
afirmó Duncan.
Destacó igualmente la importancia
de invertir en el profesorado,
puesto que maestros
“preparados” son fundamentales
para el sistema educativo y el
futuro del país.
Duncan anunció la celebración
de una cumbre internacional de
educación, centrada en los profesores,
el próximo mes de marzo
en Nueva York.
“Debemos aprender de los
países que están mostrando buenos
resultados”, apuntó, durante
un encuentro en el que también
conversó con profesores y estudiantes
de diversos colegios de los
Estados Unidos.
El estudio, revelado hoy por la
Organización para la Cooperación
y Desarrollo Económico (OCDE)
y realizado entre alumnos de 15
años, destacó a Finlandia y Corea
del Sur como los países con mejores
calificaciones.

Fallece Elizabeth Edwards, esposa
del ex senador John Edwards
(EFE).- Elizabeth Edwards, la
esposa del ex senador y dos veces
aspirante a la presidencia de los
Estados Unidos John Edwards,
falleció el martes a los 61 años,
a causa del cáncer contra el que
luchaba desde hace años.
El portavoz de la familia informó
de que Elizabeth falleció en
la casa familiar de Chapel Hill en
Carolina del Norte, según indicó
la cadena CNN.
“Hemos perdido la presencia
de Elizabeth pero permanecerá
en el corazón de esta familia”,
manifestaron en un comunicado
sus familiares, en el que agradecieron
el apoyo recibido en los
últimos años.
“La queremos y nunca conoceremos
a nadie más inspiradora
y llena de vida”, indicó la familia,
que ha decidido donar sus órganos
a la Fundación Wade Edwards,
que lleva el nombre del hijo
adolescente que perdió en un accidente
de tráfico en 1996.
“En nombre de Elizabeth queremos
expresar nuestro agradecimiento
a las miles de personas que
la han inspirado y han apoyado a
lo largo de este camino. Vuestro
apoyo y vuestra oraciones han
conmovido a toda nuestra familia”,

El vicepresidente de los Estados
Unidos, Joseph Biden, dijo
tras conocer la noticia que “Elizabeth
Edwards luchó una batalla
valiente contra una enfermedad
terrible y devastadora que toma
demasiadas vidas cada día”.
Biden calificó a Elizabeth
como una mujer que fue “una
inspiración para todos los que la
conocían y aquellos que sentían
que la conocían”.
El fallecimiento se produjo tan
sólo un día después de que la familia
emitiera un comunicado explicando
que Elizabeth Edwards
se había retirado a su hogar para
pasar sus últimos días rodeada
de sus seres queridos debido al
agravamiento de su estado.
Edwards, de 61 años, fue hospitalizada
brevemente la semana
pasada al sentirse indispuesta
durante las fiestas de Acción de
Gracias y los médicos observaron
que el cáncer había hecho
metástasis hasta el hígado.
La batalla contra el cáncer
comenzó en noviembre de 2004
cuando se le diagnosticó un
cáncer de mama. Tras una fase

recaída y el cáncer se extendió a
los huesos.
Elizabeth Edwards escribió
dos libros “Resilience” y “Saving
Graces”, que fueron éxitos
de ventas en los que narró su

el escándalo de la relación extra
marital que tuvo su marido con
Rielle Hunter.
Este no había sido un buen
año para Elizabeth, que en enero
decidió separarse de su marido,
después de que el político reconociera,
tras muchos desmentidos y
rumores, ser el padre de una niña
de dos años, fruto de esa relación.
Se ponía así fin a una relación
de más de 30 años que había sido
vista como modélica a ojos de la
opinión pública estadounidense.
Los Edwards habían superado
juntos la pérdida de su hijo mayor
Wade, en un accidente de tráfico
cuando tenía 16 años, los dos
episodios de cáncer de Elizabeth
y las sucesivas derrotas políticas
del ex senador, que compitió en
dos campañas, en 2004 y 2008.
En un mensaje publicado el
lunes en Facebook, Elizabeth
agradeció el apoyo que ha recibido
en estos años de lucha que
le habían dado la fortaleza para
seguir adelante.
“He tenido apoyo durante toda
mi vida de mi familia, mis amigos,
y una fe en el poder de resistencia
y esperanza”, señaló Edwards.
Estos apoyos “me han llevado
a través de tiempos difíciles y
me han traído más alegría a los
buenos tiempos de lo que jamás
podría haber imaginado”.

a dejar de fumar a través de sus dibujos

“My life in a smoke-free San
Antonio”, fue la plataforma para
que más de 500 estudiantes participaran
en el concurso de dibujo
en contra del tabaco, acción
que forma parte de la campaña,
“Great American Smokeout in
November”, la cual promueve
Metro Health’s Tobacco Prevention
& Control Coalition.
El Doctor Fernando Guerra,
director de Metro Health, fue
el encargado de entregar los
premios a los 27 ganadores.
La premiación tuvo lugar en
el Carver Community Cultural
Center el pasado 8 de diciembre.
Los estudiantes que participaron
en el concurso, pertenecen
a los grados del 1 al 12 y
corresponden a los diversos
distritos escolares de la ciudad
de San Antonio, incluyendo escuelas
públicas y privadas. Los
orgullosos padres y maestros
de los ganadores presenciaron
la premiación de sus hijos y
estudiantes.
El tema principal “My life in
a smoke-free San Antonio”, fue
desarrollado por los estudiantes,
con el propósito de mostrarle a
la comunidad cómo afecta el
consumo del cigarro, tanto para
fumadores activos como fumadores
pasivos.
Durante la ceremonia se galardonó
al 1er y 2do lugar de cada
grado escolar, así como también
se premió a tres categorías especiales,
Text, Digital y Grand,
este último fue el más importante
y la ganadora fue Amy
Kruger, estudiante del noveno
Jóvenes latinas quieren un seguro
médico que cubra los anticonceptivos
(EFE).- Un 89 por ciento de
las latinas entre 18 y 34 años
está a favor de que el seguro
médico provea gratuitamente
anticonceptivos bajo receta
médica, según una encuesta
de la organización de planificación
familiar Planned Parenthood.
Este deseo compartido por
la mayoría de estadounidenses
(71%) es uno de los principales
argumentos de la campaña anunciada
por esta organización
para concienciar al público
estadounidense sobre la importancia
de que la reforma
sanitaria incluya ese requisito.
El Departamento de Salud y
Servicios Humanos decidirá si
esto ocurre cuando defina qué
servicios preventivos deben
ofrecer obligatoriamente las
aseguradoras, según la enmienda

más sanos”, y también frenar el

“Este concurso sirve para
educar a la comunidad sobre
el concepto de prevención y el
peligro que existe al fumar, el
objetivo del concurso es que les
llegue el mensaje –no fumar- y
si lo hacen, dejar de hacerlo
y así proteger a quienes están
expuestos al humo del tabaco”,
indicó el Dr. Guerra.
Este es el segundo año que se
realiza el concurso de dibujo,
pero la campaña Metro Health’s
Tobacco Prevention & Control
Program, tiene 7 años dentro

medir el nivel de mercurio en el
atún enlatado reafirman la necesidad
de que los niños y las mujeres
en edad fértil limiten su consumo,
de acuerdo con Consumer Reports,
organización que condujo
el estudio.
La organización llevó a cabo
pruebas a 42 muestras de atún en
lata y bolsas de aluminio compradas
en el área metropolitana de
Nueva York e internet que confirman
que en general el atún blanco
(albacore) contiene más mercurio
que el atún “light”.

De acuerdo con el experto, las
mujeres embarazadas, lactantes
o en edad fértil y los niños que
pesan menos de 45 libras son
quienes pueden estar consumiendo
sin saberlo más de la cantidad
de mercurio que la Agencia
de Protección Ambiental (EPA)
considera recomendable.
“Debemos limitar el consumo
de atún blanco especialmente
en niños que pesan menos de 45
libras y en las mujeres en edad
fértil o embarazadas porque
previos estudios científicos han
demostrado que la acumulación
de mercurio en el cuerpo humano,
especialmente en estos grupos,
está asociado a problemas neurológicos,
cardiovasculares y del
desarrollo”, indicó el galeno.
De acuerdo con el informe, los
niveles promedio de mercurio
encontrados en el atún blanco o
albacore enlatado han aumentado
desde que la Administración
de Alimentos y Medicamentos
(FDA) examinó en 2006 muestras
realizadas en 2002 y 2004 y piden
a las autoridades revisar las recomendaciones
con respecto al
consumo de este producto entre
los grupos más afectados.
La FDA señala que las mujeres
en edad fértil y los niños pueden
comer hasta 12 onzas a la semana
de atún “light” y hasta 6 onzas de
atún blanco.
Consumer Reports recomienda
que los niños que pesen menos
de 45 libras no consuman más
de 4 onzas de atún “light” y no
más de 1.5 onzas de atún blanco
a la semana y que las mujeres
embarazadas eviten consumir
este producto como medida de
precaución.
El nuevo reporte, que será
publicado en la edición de enero
de 2011 de Consumer Reports,
encontró que cada muestra contenía
niveles de mercurio que
oscilaban entre 0.018 y 0.774
partes por millón.
Asimismo, las muestras de atún
blanco analizadas contenían de
0.217 a 0.774 ppm de mercurio y
un promedio de 0.427 ppm, lo que
de acuerdo con la organización
significa que al consumir 2.5 onzas,
de cualquiera de las muestras
sometidas a prueba, una mujer en
edad fértil excedería la ingesta
diaria de mercurio que la EPA
considera segura.
En el caso del atún “light”, el
estudio encontró que contenían de
0.018 a 0.176 ppm y un promedio
de 0.071 ppm, con lo cual una mujer
de edad fértil que consuma 2.5
onzas se encontraría por debajo
del límite que EPA impone, pero
en casi la mitad de las muestras
que se sometieron a prueba, al
consumir 5 onzas se estaría excediendo
este límite.
Mosquera señaló que las mujeres
embarazadas o en edad fértil,
así como los niños deben evitar
también el consumo de otros
pescados con alto contenido de
mercurio como el tiburón, el pez
caballa rey y el pez espada.
El experto recomienda elegir
otros tipos de pescados o mariscos
con niveles más bajos de mercurio
y que son ricos en ácidos grasos
omega-3 como el salmón y los
camarones.
Southwest General Hospital dedica
su nuevo lobby a la comunidad

Southwest General Hospital
reinauguró su lobby principal, el
cual contiene un mural pintado
por el artista Charles Ingram, el
miércoles 8 de diciembre con
la finalidad de brindar un mejor
servicio a sus clientes.
“La apertura del lobby fue una
de las más importantes que hemos
tenido ya que este sitio es el que
da la primera impresión que la
gente se lleva, y si es agradable, el
resto del hospital lo será”, expresó
el CEO del hospital, Greg Padilla.
De acuerdo a Padilla, un 70 por
ciento de los clientes del hospital
son hispanos, y por esta razón el
hospital cuenta con empleados
bilingües que permiten un mejor
entendimiento de las necesidades
de los pacientes.
“Con un 70 por ciento de pacientes
de habla hispana, nuestra
principal meta es enfocarnos en
el desempeño de un mejor servicio
y cuidado al paciente, por lo
que la gran mayoría de nuestro
equipo habla español”, comentó
Padilla.
Durante la inauguración se
ofreció a los invitados la oportunidad
de visitar el laboratorio en
donde se encuentran los aparatos
de tecnología avanzada como el
cateterismo cardiaco y el 64-slice
CT scanner, los cuales por medio
de un examen médico pueden
detectar problemas del corazón
antes de que los síntomas surjan.
“En Southwest General Hospital
tenemos el compromiso
de proveer a la comunidad el
buen cuidado del paciente, y por
eso siempre buscamos lo mejor
en tecnología avanzada”, dijo
Padilla.

La oportunidad se presentó en
bandeja. Un millón ochocientos
cincuenta mil dólares no son un
bocado despreciable, sobre todo
si es fácil apoderarse de ellos
y los riesgos son mínimos. La
tentación era demasiado grande.
Así que Jorge Manuel Bosque,
joven empleado del Banco de
Reserva de San Francisco, California,
tomó el dinero y se
apoderó de él. Debía llevarlo
del aeropuerto al banco. Pero
Jorge Manuel desapareció por
completo, y con él, el dinero.
Lo arrestaron quince meses más
tarde cuando le quedaban sólo
cien dólares. Había derrochado
todo el dinero robado: un mil-

A los once años de haber perpetrado
aquel robo, Jorge Manuel
murió en un hotel de San Francisco,
víctima de una sobredosis
de droga.
Al margen de la manera delictiva
en que obtuvo el dinero,
este hombre es un ejemplo de
lo fácil que es derrochar todo lo
que se tiene. Se apoderó de casi
dos millones de dólares. Durante
quince meses hizo las compras
más absurdas. Tiró el dinero por
todos lados. Realizó paseos y
fiestas extravagantes.
Cuando salió de la cárcel, derrochó
todo lo que le quedaba:
su salud, su mente y el resto del
dinero con el que comenzó su
nueva vida. Cayó en el pozo de
la decadencia y se entregó a las
drogas. Y las drogas acabaron
con su vida. Lo hallaron muerto
en su habitación en un hotel, y
nadie se presentó para pedir su
cuerpo.
Muchas personas como Jorge
Manuel Bosque derrochan todo lo
que tienen, incluso pertenencias
que han obtenido honradamente
y que en sí son sanas. Como que
no perciben el valor de las cosas.
Lo peor de todo es que malgastan
los años de vida que Dios les ha
concedido.
Tales personas nunca se acuerdan
de Dios, y cuando llegan al
día final, tratan desesperadamente
de encontrarlo. No es sino hasta
entonces que caen en la cuenta
de que el peor de los derroches
es malgastar los años de vida sin
tener a Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios,
como su Señor y Salvador.
La vida humana no es muy
larga. Sigue su curso, y luego se
acaba. Contamos, a lo sumo, con
setenta, ochenta o noventa años
para realizar todo lo que podamos.
Después de eso, toda puerta
queda cerrada.
¿Por qué no coronamos hoy
mismo a Jesucristo como Rey de
nuestra vida? No derrochemos
ni un solo día más de nuestra
efímera existencia. El tiempo se
va, las oportunidades se esfuman,
y tan sólo aprovechamos lo que
logramos en el presente. Hoy es el
día de salvación. Ahora es cuando
tenemos que decidir. No dejemos
pasar esta ocasión sin entregarnos
a Cristo. Este es el momento más
importante de nuestra vida.

caso de una mujer que descargó
su conciencia en nuestro sitio
www.conciencia.net. Lo hizo de
manera anónima, como pedimos
que se haga; así que, a pesar de que
nunca se lo había contado a nadie,
nos autorizó a que la citáramos,
como sigue:
Tuve una relación de quince
años, con dos hijos..., pero mi
esposo me abandonó.... Hace casi
cinco años, comencé una nueva
relación. Ya tengo cuatro nietos.
Resulta que a mi actual pareja no
le gusta que vengan mis nietos, y
eso me duele mucho. He tratado
de hablar con él, pero es inútil; no
quiere que ellos se queden en mi
casa un sábado por la noche. ¡De
verdad estoy muy desesperada;
estoy a punto de estallar! No sé qué
hacer, si terminar mi relación y vivir
yo sola y poder disfrutar de mis
nietos cuando yo quiera o pueda.
Tengo tantas ganas de entregar
mi vida a Dios.... Me gustaría un
consejo.
Este es el consejo que le dimos:
Estimada amiga:
Nos alegra que usted nos haya
contado su caso, pero lamentablemente
no sabemos los pormenores
de su situación. Si la casa donde
usted vive le perteneció a su pareja
antes del comienzo de su relación
con él, entonces tal vez él tema que
sus nietos maltraten sus pertenencias.
Tal vez sufra de alguna afección
emocional que dificulta que él
esté rodeado de personas. O quizás
esté físicamente enfermo y el ruido
que hacen los niños le cause cierto
malestar. Pero usted no mencionó
ninguna razón, así que tenemos que
dar por sentado que la única razón
es que a él no le gustan los niños. Y
usted dijo “mi casa” al referirse al
lugar donde vive, así que también
daremos por sentado que la casa le
pertenece a usted y no a él....
Si usted ha seguido muchos de
nuestros “Casos de la semana”,
seguramente habrá notado que
creemos firmemente en el matrimonio.
Dios diseñó el matrimonio
para que hombres y mujeres
pudieran entregarse de por vida el
uno al otro y formar familias amorosas.
Lamentablemente, cuando
tratamos de formar familias amorosas
sin la entrega que requiere
el matrimonio, hay un elemento
fundamental que falta. Si no hay
una verdadera entrega de parte y
parte, hay menos disposición de
resolver problemas y menos incentivo
de llegar a acuerdos mutuos.
¡Claro que los casados también
tienen problemas! Pero los votos
que se hicieron cuando se casaron
son vínculos muy fuertes que, con
la ayuda de Dios, pueden contribuir
a sostener la relación mientras
afrontan las dificultades.
Es posible que su pareja quiera
casarse con usted si le dice que
ya no está dispuesta a vivir con
él a menos que se casen. Pero si
eso ocurre, tenga el cuidado de
asegurarse de llegar a un acuerdo
en cuanto a visitas de parte de los
nietos antes de casarse con él.
¡A los nietos debemos amarlos
y disfrutar de ellos!

H-E-B hosts its 18th Annual
Feast of Sharing Dinner

In the spirit of the holiday season,
H-E-B invites the San Antonio
community to enjoy a day of
food and fun at its 18th Annual
H-E-B Feast of Sharing Dinner, a
holiday tradition and open invitation
celebration for all residents
to enjoy a free holiday meal and
entertainment.
“This is H-E-B’s way to give
back to the community and inviting
everyone to come together,”
said Lecey Kotzur, public affairs
specialist for H-E-B. “It’s our way
of saying, ‘thank you and food’s
on us.’”
Free and open to all, the dinner
starts at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
December 18 at the Henry B.
Gonzalez Convention Center, in
exhibit halls A and B.
“Everyone in the community is
invited –from anyone who is looking
for a hot meal to anyone who
wants to come with family and
friends and enjoy great company,”
added Kotzur.
More than 15,000 meals will be
served and prepared
by approximately
3,000
volunteers.
Guests will enjoy
hot ham with
pineapple glaze,
fluffy mashed
potatoes, gravy,
and mixed vegetables.
For those
who plan on saving
room for dessert, warm apple
pie will be served along with hot
drinks for the chilly weather.
In addition to feasting a hearty
meal, guests will also enjoy live
musical entertainment, and access
to social services including free
health and fitness screenings.
Moreover, the San Antonio Children’s
Museum has put together a
crafts area where kids can enjoy a
variety of arts and crafts, and free
face paint. Also, the San Antonio
Public Library set up a reading
corner and a place where kids can
write letters to Santa.
Speaking of Santa, the jolly old
man will also be making a stop to
visit little ones and get a free photo
with them. For the grownups, more
than 20 nonprofit organizations
will be there to talk about services
available, such as the Family Service
Association and Dress for
Success.
For those unable to get around,
H-E-B will provide free transportation
to the event through VIA and
VIA Trans. Guests will also be
able to make a free long-distance
call to loved ones anywhere around
the world.
The Feast of Sharing began in
1988 in Laredo, Texas and has
grown to be a holiday tradition that
serves more than 250,000 meals to
people in 31 locations throughout
Texas and Mexico.

Blue Santa helps make Christmas
special for families in need

Blue Santa festivities were
initiated with a press conference
held at Indian Creek Elementary
School Wednesday morning in
the presence of the student body
and school officials.
The press conference was
delivered in conjunction with
Councilmen Philip Cortez, the
S.A.P.D West Patrol SAFFE
Unit, and Southwest Community
in Action.
The press conference included
a special appearance by
Blue Santa himself and several
mascots.
The Blue Santa program unofficially
initiated in 1979 as
officers adopted low resource
families during Christmas season.
It was not until 1986 that
the SAPD officially adopted the
idea as their yearly project.
The program is carried out by
having officers throughout San
Antonio selecting families that
are in need within their respective
patrol districts.
SAPD officers and volunteers
will take on the task
of assembling, wrapping and
labeling the gifts which are to
be correctly distributed to the
children listed on the program’s
Blue Santa list.
Officers deliver the packages
to the home of the needy
families that they selected and
on occasion are accompanied by
a fellow officer who will dress
up in a Blue Santa costume to
make the delivery.

Durante la 8ª Gala Anual
de American Sunrise, la cual
se llevó a cabo el pasado 1 de
diciembre, LULAC (Liga de
Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos
Unidos) y Time Warner Cable,
quienes trabajan juntos en pro
de la comunidad hispana, anunciaron
una importante donación
al “Empower America Tech
Center”, nuevo centro que apoya
la educación a través de diversos
programas.
Margaret Moran, presidenta
nacional de LULAC y Jon Gary
Herrera, vicepresidente regional
de Time Warner Cable, hicieron
una donación de equipo de cómputo,
proyectores y pantallas,
material que será de gran utilidad
para el nuevo laboratorio de tecnología,
así como la instalación
y soporte del acceso a internet.
El donativo representa un significativo
paso para la “alfabetización
digital” entre la comunidad
latina.
“Nosotros estamos dispuestos
a ayudar a nuestra comunidad
latina, y la educación es un área
muy importante, hoy en día la
tecnología está muy avanzada
y se necesita estar capacitado,
nos sentimos muy honrados de
haber podido contribuir con este
proyecto”, dijo Moran.
American Sunrise no es la
primera organización a la LULAC
apoya, de hecho, la alianza que
tiene con Time Warner Cable
durante los próximos tres años
permitirá seguir apoyando a la
comunidad, a través de un fondo
de 200,000 dólares, los cuales
serán distribuidos en diversas
organizaciones a lo largo del país.
“En el mes de agosto pudimos
hacer una aportación en la comunidad
de Cincinnati”, indicó
Moran.
El nuevo centro de tecnología
ofrecerá a los participantes del
programa libre acceso a clases
de computación y recursos como
Internet de alta velocidad, lo cual
les ayudará a desarrollar habilidades
laborales, investigar opciones
profesionales y participar
en las oportunidades educativas,
tales como la administración
del dinero, el idioma inglés y la
preparación para la ciudadanía,
herramientas que los harán más
competitivos.
American Sunrise fue fundado
por el ex alcalde de San Antonio,
Henry Cisneros y su esposa.
Esta organización contribuye
con la comunidad desde hace
varios años, y este nuevo proyecto
brindará un gran soporte.
“Atendemos a estudiantes desde
el primero hasta el doceavo
grado, después de que ellos atienden
la escuela vienen al centro y
les apoyamos académicamente
con lo que necesitan”, dijo Choco
Gonzalez, presidenta de American

al centro”.
La “alfabetización digital”
será posible para los adultos que
deseen aprender sobre la nueva

San Antonio Independent
School District board members
honored the late Judge Andy
Mireles earlier this week at the
dedication ceremony for the
Law Magnet Center, which now
bears his name at Fox Tech High
School. The Judge was selected
thanks to his tireless service for
the community and hard work to
find justice for children. A strong
advocate for youth, the Judge
was instrumental in the review of
Child Protective Services.
The Fox Tech Mariachis
opened the program, which
ended with the unveiling of the
new name for the Law Magnet
Center to commemorate Mireles’
selfless commitment to the
community.
“I feel honored, very honored,
to know that people still remember
him with a smile on their
faces,” Mrs. Margaret Mireles
said.
Almost a year after his death,
school, business and community
leaders gathered to remember
the Judge and how he defended
children and youth. Those who
spoke at the dedication ceremony
included Principal Anita
Chavera, Fox Tech High School;
President James Howard, SAISD
Board; President and CEO Robert
Puente, SAWS; and several
others. Students also attended
the dedication ceremony and
after hearing the accolades for
the Judge, perhaps learned the
value of championing what one
believes in.
“Andy was a very passionate
human being, and he loved to
serve the Bexar County 73rd
District Court,” Mrs. Mireles
explained. “He was like a tough
parent for all those who worked
with him.”
Mireles was indeed a dedicated
judge who loved his family,
the law and public service. For
more than 20 years, he served on
the bench for the Bexar County
73rd District Court, always passionate
about the law and compassionate
to the young people
he dealt with and the families
that supported them.
He was so often recognized
for his work, it seemed he collected
awards. He improved the
juvenile justice system in Bexar
County and helped create the
county’s Child Abuse and Neglect
Court.
His family and colleagues
recall his incredible work ethic,
which left a legacy of love
thanks to his dedication to the
youth of San Antonio and the
foundation he laid to improve
their lives.
At the end of the ceremony, the Center was dedicated to the late Judge Andy Mireles to honor his
life’s work.

The Jamfar family is letting
S.A. know Swedish pizza is nothing
new, Italians are just better
at marketing and Americans are
suckers for the 5-5-5 deal.

It’s no secret over the past few
years, on the North side of San
Antonio (near UTSA), bars have
been popping up like your mom’s
yearly harvest of petunias.
One problem … there is a lack
of places where you can find the
perfect hangover food and reasonably
priced grub that’ll leave
some extra cash in your pocket
for the next night out.
So, when I stumbled across
Pizza Royal located on 6565
Babcock Road only a couple
blocks from a friend’s couch, I
figured, “why not, I’m feeling
like royalty.”
As I entered, I went into a
pizza-leptic seizure after seeing
the 56 pizzas on the menu, not
including their kebab sandwich,
plate and roll. I sat down, gathered
my thoughts and began to
decipher the insane combinations
of pizza choices.
Named for cities across the
globe, there were pizzas with
shrimp and clams, curry chicken
and banana, and bacon and eggs
along with everything else you
might want.
Noticing I had no clue what
I was looking to order, owner,
Sami Jamfar rescued me and
explained the menu and history
of the food.
Pizza Royal is Swedish, family-owned
restaurant.
Jamfar and his mother are usually
the ones helping perplexed
customers order and greet the
regulars that come in.

cranks out the Swedish pizza
pies—yes Swedish.
Italians are credited with introducing
pizza to the states, but the
Swedish have been making pizza
for just as long, simply with their
own twist. The major principles
stay the same; thin crust, light
pizza sauce and fresh ingredients.
The Swedish though, have a
secret sauce they add called “kebab”
sauce. This sauce is a yogurt
based—that’s as far as I got when
it came to finding out the ingredients
after telling Jamfar the sauce
was borderline crack.
Kebab sauce is placed on top
of the pizza fresh out of the
oven—it completes it—Jerry
Maguire style, it is a must try with
everything.
With all the pizzas on the menu
priced at $6.50, I order the Royal
pizza, Kebab sandwich and Budapest
pizza. I knew I wouldn’t finish
the 12-inch pizzas myself but
I’m always thoughtful of roommates
and bums on the corner.
Dressed with kebab sauce and
served with lettuce, tomatoes and
onions, my Kebab sandwich was
gone before it hit the table. The
sandwich is similar to a gyro, but
the sauce takes it next level.
My Budapest pizza came with
the basic tomato sauce, mozzarella
and bacon and eggs. Yes,
bacon and eggs. Brunch never
tasted so good.
After putting away three slices
of pizza and a sandwich, I still
hadn’t touched my Royal pizza.
The kebab sauce sitting on top
was calling my name, so I had no
choice but to answer.
Topped with kebab meat, onions
and tomatoes the Royal pizza
put me over the top. My taste buds
were wasted off of flavors I never
knew could be put on a pizza.
I’m still invited back to Pizza
Royal even after owner Jamfar
caught me trying to sneak a gallon
of his family’s kebab sauce
out with me.
“We invite everyone out,” said
Jamfar. Not just UTSA students,
but all families and friends to try
our food.” With nothing on the
menu over $8.50, Pizza Royal is
a perfect place for unique pizza
full of fresh ingredients for any
student, family or someone looking
for a quick lunch.
