the State Shoreline Management Act;
*The San Juan County Board of County Commissioners declared the marine waters of the entire
county as a "marine stewardship area" in 2004 and has engaged in a three-year planning process to
further protect the County's marine waters;
*The County is home to an extensive National Wildlife Refuge system;
*The Univeristy of Washington's Friday Harbor Laboratories owns two biological preserves on San
Juan Island and utilizes the County's marine waters for on-going short-term and long-term research;
and
*The County waters are used for a wide-range of scientific research by scientists across the United
States, Canada and beyond.
