16 STURBRIDGE VILLAGER • Friday, October 31, 2008 SPORTS Tantasqua tops North to remain undefeated BY DAVID JOHNSON SPORTS CORRESPONDENT STURBRIDGE — There was plenty to celebrate Friday night as the seniors on the Tantasqua football team were honored before the game in a touching ceremony. There was plenty to celebrate four quarters later as Tantasqua's undefeated season rolled on with a 34-28 victory over Worcester North. On a cool night at the Reservation, both teams’ offensives were expected to move the ball well — and they certainly did. It was Tantasqua's defense that eventually won the game, though, with a great goal line stand in the fourth quarter. On the Warriors’ first possession, they were able to put a strong drive together with some nice runs and a couple of first down catches by Brandon Forcier, who caught four balls for 74 yards on the night. Keith Rosseel capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, with the extra point making it 7-0 Tantasqua. On Tantasqua's second drive, Rosseel, who had 17 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns, and hard running Colby Bilodeau (eight carries for 76 yards and two touchdowns) led the way. Rosseel's 39-yard scamper put the Warriors up 13-0 after the point after failed. Things looked bleak for the Bears as quarterback Corey Lavalle scored from 1 yard out on Tantasqua’s third possession. But, the North High Bears were not about to go quietly, as they put together a couple of long scoring drives of 70 and 65 yards, capped off by a 63-yard touchdown run by Kevin Portee. Later in the second quarter, North was able to tie the score at 20-20 on a 44-yard run by Portee. Tantasqua's biggest break came at the end of the first half as North was punting from its own 15-yard line. A bad snap led to Tantasqua taking over on North's 5-yard line with 30 seconds left in the half. Tantasqua was able to capitalize on North's misfortune. A 5-yard touchdown pass to Greg Caswell and the extra point made the score 28-20. Caswell made three well-timed catches for 36 yards on the night. On their first possession of the second half, North High came right back as Derryck Walker took a fumble and ran 55 yards for a touchdown, tying the score at 28. Tantasqua didn't sit back, though, on their first possession of the second half. Starting at their own 35, they marched 65 yards, capped off by a 7-yard touchdown run by Lavalle. The score was set up by a great block from running back Forcier, who led the way around the left end. Tantasqua had the lead now, 34-28, as the point after failed. With just over seven minutes left, the Bears' offense was ready to make a move. At their own 43, a flea flicker was completed to the Tantasqua 17-yard line. It was a tough play for the Tantasqua defense, who at the time kept North's running game in check. North made it all the way down to the Tantasqua 6-yard line, where the Tantasqua defense stepped up. They stopped North on four consecutive plays as the defensive line penetrated into North's back field and blew up any play they called. Tim Poissant led the way with a couple of big stops. Tantasqua was able to run out the clock and preserve the win. After the game, Tantasqua Assistant Coach John Bilodeau said the Warriors stopped North's running game that had gained momentum in the first half. "We bulked up the front line by adding another player,” he said. "But the defensive line was just more physical than theirs in the second half. It was certainly a battle out their all evening long." Friday, October 31, 2008 SPORTS • STURBRIDGE VILLAGER 17 Wednesday, Oct. 15 The Tantasqua junior varsity boys’ soccer team crushed Southbridge, 13- 0, to improve their record to 6-3-2. Goals were scored by Greg Crane (two), Iassac Nichols, Mark Pover (two), Sam Rousseau, Mike Brothers, Nick Beaudoin, Cam Amadio, Billy Roscioli, Luke Kras, Alex Hardy and Joshua Escobar. Assists were made by Greg Crane and Ryan Little. “It was good to see everybody back and healthy again,” noted coach Vin Siniscalchi. Amadio and Evan Parker shared goalie duties; Amadio had one save in the first half, and Parker had two in the second frame. Monday, Oct. 20 • The Tantasqua junior varsity boys’ soccer team beat their counterparts from David Prouty, 3-2. The Warriors’ record improved to 7-3-2 with the victory. Mark Pover provided two header goals for Tantasqua, assisted by Steven Dunkum and Alex Hardy, while Evan Parket had a breakaway goal. Minding the net was Cam Amadio, who had 12 saves (five of them in the first half). • The Worcester South volleyball team (8-8) needed a fifth set to beat Tantasqua (5-13), 3-2. Set scores were 25-22, 19-25, 25-15, 25-27 and 15-12. For the Warriors, Rachael Nichols had 24 service points, Corrie Molleur had 30 attacks and 20 kills and her sister, Nicole, had 19 attacks and five kills. Tuesday, Oct. 21 • The Tantasqua field hockey team (13-0-3) kept on winning by blanking David Prouty, 2-0. Goals were scored by Miah DiGregorio, assisted by Shelby Farland, and Sarah Violette, assisted by Sally Chamberland. • Both the Tantasqua boys’ and girls’ cross country teams won their respective Southern Worcester County League West titles by running against Shepherd Hill and Grafton at the Rams’ 3.1-mile course in Dudley. The teams achieved a perfect 4-0 conference record. The girls’ team beat both Shepherd Hill, 20-41, and Grafton, 15-50. Shepherd Hill also defeated Grafton, 18-43. The top 10 runners were: 1. Ali Tyburski (Shepherd Hill), 19:16; 2. Hope Hopkins (Tantasqua), 21:06; 3. Danielle Cloutier (Tantasqua), 21:27; 4. Sarah Prizio (Tantasqua), 21:32; 5. Engle Torres (Tantasqua), 21:47; 6. Mandy Pote (Tantasqua), 21:51; 7. Alexandra Kane (Tantasqua), 21:58; 8. Leah Tully (SH), 22:15; 9. Nicole Himebaugh (SH), 22:49; and 10. Katie Monopoli (Tantasqua), 23:03. Wednesday, Oct. 22 • The Tantasqua varsity volleyball team closed its inaugural campaign with a 3-0 loss to Shepherd Hill on their home court in Sturbridge. Because of work being down to their gym, Shepherd Hill has played nearly all of their games on the road — and amassed a 16-3 record along the way. Set scores were 25-17, 25-22 and 25-22. Tantasqua’s final record is 5-14. • The Tantasqua girls’ soccer team defeated Bartlett, 3-2. For the Warriors, Tabby Ruggieri had a hat trick, assisted by Jess Farland (once) and Katie Morrissey (twice). High School Notebook Nicole Stone and Bryana Poulin scored for Bartlett. • The Tantasqua junior varsity boys’ soccer improved to 7-3-3 by tying Bartlett, 2-2, on the Indians’ home field in Webster. Goals for the Warriors were scored by Billy Roscioli and Steve Dunkum. In goal was Cam Amadio, with three saves in the first half and seven in the second half. Friday, Oct. 24 • The Tantasqua field hockey team clinched the SWCL West division with a 9-1 victory over Southbridge. The win improved their record to 14- 0-4 (9-0-1 in SWCL West). Tantasqua goals were scored by Sarah Violette (five goals), Shelby Farland, Kate Misaiszek, Jenna Howarth and Mackenzie Kirker. Southbridge’s goal was scored by Katie Lora. • The Tantasqua boys’ soccer team improved its record to 11-2-4 (7-1-3 in SWCL West) by beating Southbridge, 6-0 (0-17-0, 0-11-0 SWCL West). D.J. Salisbury scored two goals for the Warriors, along with single goals by Garrett Danna, Christian Seguin, David Cardoso, and Blake Minchoff (who had his first varsity goal on a penalty kick in the 77th minute). Minchoff also scored his 6 1/2th shutout of the season in goal, with seven saves. Eric Lincoln minded the goal for Southbridge, recording 12 saves. • The Tantasqua JV boys’ soccer team picked up its eighth win of the season by blanking Southbridge, 10-0. Goals for Tantasqua were scored by Issac Nichols (two), Cam Amadio (two), Pat Adams (who also had two assists), Michael Brothers, Nick Beaudoin, Greg Crane (one assist), Josh Escobar and Ryan Little. Evan Parker recorded an assist. Amadio, Nichols and Crane split goalie duties for Tantasqua. Amadio had three saves in the first half, while Nichols and Crane each had two in the second half. Team MASS girls’ basketball to hold tryouts Team MASS Girls’ Basketball tryouts for the 2009 spring season will be held Sunday, Nov. 9 at Auburn High School and Sunday, Nov. 16 at Tantasqua Regional High School in Fiskdale.
