Large deck ideal for cookouts. $179,900 AROUND THE REGION Work begun to keep dam secure NEW SENSORS BEING INSTALLED BY CHRISTOPHER TANGUAY NEWS STAFF WRITER U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) personnel are installing new testing equipment they say will help maintain the stability and security of Westville Dam. The dam in Southbridge holds, under normal conditions, the 11-foot deep, 23-acre conservation pool at the foot of Westville Lake in Southbridge and Sturbridge. Westville is part of a six-dam network along the major rivers in the Thames River Basin. The Westville Lake Recreation Area attracts visitors near and far, serving as the site of, among other things, the popular annual River Race and Duck Pluck, which draws hundreds of people — young and old. At full capacity, the Westville Dam is able to hold water 55 feet deep across a 913-acre surface area, providing flood protection for Southbridge and Dudley, as well as Putnam, Danielson, Jewett City and Norwich, Conn. The dam was built by the ACOE in 1962 in response to major flooding caused by hurricanes in the 1930s and 1950s. Beginning last week, and continuing on through the next two, ACOE mechanical engineers Chris Scabia and Andy McAvoy are working at Westville Dam to get 10 new sensors up and running, that will monitor the temperature and pressure at the surface of the water behind the dam. “It’s common to measure the pressure in an earthen dam for the safety and integrity of the dam itself,” Scabia said. “We’re monitoring it to determine the degree of seepage and where it is,” said ACOE project manager Keith Beecher. The sensors, which reach the water level through borings drilled in the top of the dam, are attached to data collection stations strategically located throughout the top of the dam, installed three months ago. The data collection stations, which are fully self sustaining — run on solar energy — send hourly reports on the dam, via a government satellite to the ACOE facility in Concord, where the information is closely monitored for drops in temperature or spikes pressure, which may indicate seepage through the dam. Scabia’s own invention, the ACOE currently has 500 data collection stations working on more than 30 dams across the commonwealth. McAvoy explained that the electronic censors and data collection stations have assumed the once very dangerous job of manually testing water levels, which had to be done all year round up to just three years ago. Once all of the sensors are installed into the dam, the water in the conservation pool will be drawn down as the first step in a battery of tests that will ensure the censors’ accuracy during extreme weather conditions. Beech said the drawdown will most likely happen this week. Scabia said people can expect to see noticeably lower water levels on either Thursday or Friday. While the water is down, the dam will be examined for any areas of perforation. “When we drain it, we’re just going to look at anything that might indicate seepage,” Scabia explained. In the event that any points of weakness are located, Beecher said, “We’re going to analyze the data and see what we need to do.” If any repairs are necessary, Scabia said, either a wet drying grout or concrete will be used to prevent any further damage. The other option for the ACOE should seepage be located, would be to place a pool restriction on the dam, which would only allow a specifically determined amount of water to be retained by the dam. Scabia said the severity of the problem and location of the dam are typically what determine the priority status for various repair projects, although Scabia does not think any of that will be necessary at Westville. “We don’t expect to find anything because we’re not having any significant problems,” he said. Following the drawdown, Scabia said the conservation pool will experience approximately a week of being completely dry before it is filled past its average water level to 20 feet, again to test the accuracy of the new censors. All in all, Scabia said the water levels on both sides of Westville Dam should return to normal within two weeks, barring any major setbacks during the drawdown process.
