From the editor
This week’s Wrest Point State
League RECORD cover highlights and
congratulates Launceston’s Beau Green
who played his 200th senior game against
Devonport last week.
The RECORD caught up with Beau’s
longest senior coach (7 years), Adam
Sanders, and he explained that: “Beau has
been a tremendous player for Launceston
over the last 10 years. I saw him develop
from a good young player with potential
into an ultra competitive, powerful, hard
running halfback / centreman who was
able to play offensive and defensive roles
for the team. Beau was probably the first
of the now senior Blues to take onboard
the importance of preparation, recovery
and fitness to take his football to a better
level. A premiership captain, twice B&F
and now 200 game player. Beau will be
remembered amongst the Blues very best
players and as a great clubman.”
The RECORD’s reading highlight is Our
Great Game which reviews the exceptional
achievement of Ian Callinan in finally
debuting in the AFL with Adelaide Crows
after a 13 year journey through the talent
pathway.
Have a great Super Saturday at the footy.
VIEW FROM HERE | A week is a long time in football....
The catch cry of a “week is a long time in football” is certainly relevant to the State League
competition at the moment and will continue to be as the home and away season draws
closer to an end.
Last week’s results meant there were some positional
changes to the ladder, including the following:
• Clarence who were sitting 2nd only a game clear now
find themselves 2 games clear of the 3rd placed team
and have now made it difficult to be dislodged from
2nd spot.
• Burnie who were sitting 3rd prior to last weekend are
now sitting 4th after their loss.
• Glenorchy who were sitting 4th prior to last week are
now sitting 3rd.
• North Launceston prior to last weekend were sitting
5th on the ladder by percentage have now gone a
game clear inside the 5.
• North Hobart who was sitting 6th just outside the five
on percentage is now a game outside of the five and in
7th spot.
• Lauderdale who were 2 games outside the five in 7th
position prior to last weekend now find themselves in
6th and only one game outside the five.
This weekend’s schedule of matches provides a number
of contests that could see the results go either way
which may change where clubs are positioned come
Monday.
The other thing that occurred this week was North
Hobart’s Head Coach, Clinton Brown, tendered his
resignation to the Club; Clinton was the last remaining
playing-coach in the State league competition.
Clinton’s comments in the media included “I just think
at the moment being a playing-coach is too tough at
this level” and “you need to have your eyes in the box
all the time to see what is going on and at the moment
doing it on the ground is just too difficult”. This poses an
interesting conundrum for TSL Clubs as to whether the
appointment of a playing-coach or non playing coach will
deliver the right structure for the Club to be successful.
If you look at “Best Practice”, which is the AFL, the
current day football environment demands that people
heading up the football club in a coaching capacity
should have a ‘helicopter view’ on game day and
implement their own strategies and structures by seeing
them first hand from afar, rather than being on the
ground and receiving the information second hand.
What I am sure of is that Clubs will appoint the most
appropriate person for the role whether that is a playing
or non-playing coach to achieve the outcomes that their
core business warrants and desires, but it does provide
for an interesting debate.
Editor’s Note: The last time that a playing coach was
engaged in the AFL / VFL was way back in 1979 when
Alex Jesaulenko led Carlton to the Premiership. Along
with John Nichols at Carlton in 1972 they are the only
instances of successful playing coaches at this level in
the last 50 years.
Tasmanian Brett Geappen led Clarence to the State
League title as a playing coach in 2009, but, arguably,
some of the most successful Tasmanian coaches of
recent years have been non-playing such as Matthew
Armstrong, Adam Sanders, David Newitt, Grant Fagan,
Andy Bennett and Garry Davidson.
OUR GREAT GAME | IAN CALLINAN
THE most asked question in Tasmanian football for the past decade will be answered this
season: how will Ian Callinan go at AFL level?
After 10 years of being overlooked by recruiters
and overshadowed by less credentialed players,
the Adelaide Crows finally took a punt on the skilful
forward-midfielder when he was taken pick 64 in last
year’s rookie draft as a then 27-year-old. Superbly
skilled with an innate instinct to find the goals,
Callinan had been constantly overlooked since being
an under-18 All-Australian in 2000.
Despite the numerous set-backs, including doing
pre-season training with Collingwood, Essendon,
North Melbourne and Richmond to no avail, he
persevered, winning the VFL best and fairest in 2005
while playing for the Devils, before taking his skills
to SANFL club Central District. He has played in four
consecutive flags for the SA Bulldogs, winning the
club best and fairest twice and was best on ground
in last year’s SANFL grand final, kicking four-goals
in the six-point win. Regarded as the best player in
Australia outside the AFL, the Crows finally selected
the small forward-midfielder.
On the opening night of the NAB Cup season
Adelaide coach Neil Craig issued a public apology to
his new recruit: “Even now I’m not sure how far Ian
will go, that will be up to him. But seeing him on the
track, I hate to say it guys, but the recruiters of the
AFL - and we’re in it - have done him a disservice. He
should’ve been in the competition five years ago.”
But, just when his AFL quest was about to be fulfilled,
heartache struck again as he tore the bicep off the
bone in the final practice game, sidelining Callinan
for 10 weeks. Now, after two games in the SANFL, he
is set for his AFL debut, taking on Geelong at Skilled
Stadium tomorrow - one of the oldest debutants in
the modern era.
Callinan said he learned to live with the constant
snub, not dwelling on players picked up who lacked
his natural football ability while he honed his skills in
the lower leagues. He was never given a definitive
reason why he was not selected but believed his
height - at just 172cm - was a factor and the trend
at the time to draft tall, athletes and then try to
turn them into footballers rather than the other
way round. Callinan said: “That is probably the one
thing that has always frustrated me. When I sat
down with Neil to have a coffee, he said to me, ‘Why
haven’t you been on a list?’ That’s something I’ve
never got any feedback on, which has been a little
bit disappointing but that’s the way it goes. I’ve got
no doubt in my mind my height has gone against
me but there are some guys who have been going
4

OUR GREAT GAME | IAN CALLINAN
all right as small crumbers lately like [Collingwood’s
174cm premiership forward Jarryd] Blair and those
sorts of guys. That has probably turned it around a
little bit. Early days it was more the athletic type,
they went away from the genuine footballers for more
the athlete they were trying to turn into a footballer. I
reckon it is starting to turn back the other way a bit.”
Callinan’s former Devils coach, ex-Fitzroy and
North Melbourne midfielder Mathew Armstrong
believes AFL clubs’ pride and ego also had a lot to
do with it. Armstrong was instrumental in Callinan’s
development, as he and assistant coach Lance
Spaulding turned the 86kg tubby teenager into a
72kg elite footballer by making him ride up and down
Mt Wellington’s numerous bike tracks. Armstrong
said of Callinan’s constant draft snubs” “I’m
amazed, I think sometimes recruiters or people in
the football industry don’t want to look back and
admit they made a mistake. That’s the only way I
can look at it. He just kept putting his name up all
the time. I can understand where the game was at
at the time. The philosophy back then was let’s get
the 190cm-plus athlete and try and turn him into a
footballer. It was all the rage. Now all of a sudden,
especially with the high possession footy they
are playing now, they actually need the footballer
again - the bloke who can actually use it to maintain
possession a lot more.”
Former Mariners coach Hamish Ogilvie also played a
big part in Callinan’s selection. For years, the Crows
had been struggling to find a crumbing forward.
Ogilvie, now Adelaide’s Victorian recruiting officer,
kept throwing up the Tasmanian’s name to no avail
until finally Callinan’s standout performances could
not go unheralded and he was invited along to preseason
training.
Callinan, affectionately known as “Wingnut” due to
the size of his ears, said it was a surreal day back
on December 7 when his name was finally read out.
Callinan said: “It is hard to describe, it is something
I’ve wanted to do for 10 years. I was actually at
training at the time. They said, ‘If everything falls
your way there is a good chance you’ll get on the list,’
but they hadn’t said, ‘We are definitely going to take
you.’ I was training and walked off the track and ...
a few of the boys were watching on the internet and
I didn’t know whether to watch it or not. All the guys
said, ‘You’ve got to watch it,’ and I said ‘Well what
happens if I don’t get picked?’ It would have been an
eerie feeling, but I sat down and watched it and there
was a roar in the changerooms when my name was
read out which was a good feeling.”
However being drafted gives no guarantees. On a
one-year rookie contract and now 28, Callinan knows
he has to make an impression this season or his AFL
dream will disappear as quickly as it arrived.
Armstrong has no doubt his prodigy can make an
impact at AFL level. “I had a beer with him just
before Christmas, gee he’s in ripping nick. He’s
really cut, he’s built well. Good on him. As the year’s
went on he shrugged it [the AFL snubs] off a little bit
easier. He always had a great passion to play at the
highest level. It is a fantastic story.”
After this season there might be a new question
asked, and not just from those in Tasmania; why
wasn’t Ian Callinan playing AFL for the past decade?
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
North Hobart’s horror stretch is becoming a nightmare as the Demons slumped to their fourth
loss in five rounds, this time to Lauderdale at North Hobart Oval.
To make matters worse, the Demons No.1 ruckman
Matthew Muir broke his collarbone and midfielder
Zane Murphy, was booked for striking the Bombers
Josh Spaulding in the second quarter. The 35-point
loss saw the star-studded North Hobart drop to
seventh and resulted in coach Clinton Brown
standing down on Monday, replaced by former Devils
coach Lance Spaulding. Lauderdale was brilliant in
the first half, racing to a 37-point half-time lead, led
by forward pocket Sam O’Byrne who set up the win
with five first-half goals. North Hobart rallied in the
second half with Jesse Wells booting four of his five
goals after the break. With two early majors to start
the last term, the Demons moved to within 12 points
but the baby Bombers showed great maturity with
five of the last six goals to run out deserved victors.
Jack Siggins was impassable at centre half-back for
Lauderdale.
North Launceston continues to impress with arguably
its best win of the season, a thrilling five-point victory
over Burnie at Aurora Stadium. Burnie led at the first
three changes but the Northern Bombers 2.5 to 1.4
in the last term was enough to see them move to
equal third on points with the Dockers and Glenorchy
and stay one game clear of sixth-placed Lauderdale.
Allan O’Sign kicked a game high three goals for North
Launceston while veteran Michael Praciak continued
his good form with a best afield performance.
Clarence is now two games clear in second spot after
smashing Hobart by 133-points at the TCA Ground.
The Roos kept Hobart goalless until half-way through
the third term, and banged on seven goals in the first
quarter and nine in the last in the massive win. TSL
star Cameron Thurley kicked five - two more than the
entire Hobart team - and was just one of 11 goalkickers
for Clarence.
Top of the table Launceston handed out a mother
of a hiding away to last-placed Devonport. The
Blues were held to a four-point lead at quarter time,
but from then on smashed through 23 goals to
four for a 130-point flogging. Brian Finch bagged
another seven-goal haul while mobile big man Joe
Groenewegen was best on ground.
Glenorchy moved to third spot on percentage with a
93-point thrashing of South Launceston at KGV Oval.
Former Brownlow Medallist Jason Akermanis kicked
four goals, as did captain Jon Bowring and Zac Webb.
The Southern Magpies set up the win with a 10-goal
to nil second quarter and then cruised to victory.
BURNING QUESTIONS:
Will the resignation of playing-coach Clinton Brown
during the week shock North Hobart into action
against Glenorchy at North Hobart Oval on Saturday?
Will Clarence coach Brett Geappen’s comments from
earlier this year that Lauderdale weren’t going to
make the finals come back to haunt him?
CLUB NOTES | Round 11
Burnie Dockers - 03 6430 5870
Founded - 1885
State Premierships - 1963, 64, 78
Today will be a great test for both sides. The
Launceston FC are up and going in both grades.
The burning question no doubt our supporters will
be asking is have we made in-roads to last time
we played them.
Over the last month the club has been plagued
with injuries with a total of 15 players missing
from our ranks. This has really tested our depth
with a lot of our U17 boys getting a taste of TSL
football. On the positive side this has given some
of our young Dockers a chance to play senior
football which should really put them and the club
in a good position for the future.
Tonight the club is holding it players review. There
has been a lot of talk around the club in regards
to a few acts. All supporters are welcome and
I think you will see another side of some of our
players not to mention the girls in the kitchen. $5
entry which includes supper.
Upcoming Events
16th July 1961 Cooee Premiership reunion
(Heritage Round v South Launceston). You can
Congratulations to both teams on their resounding
victories last week. It was great to see yet another
Bowden debut for the Seniors. Tyler has a huge
future with the club. The efforts of young stars Zac
Webb and Luke Potter provide the Club with a great
outlook for the future.
Whilst we have been hit severely with injury the
boys playing each week have been putting some
very encouraging performances. We have a big
month ahead of us and need to start it with a
victory over North Hobart this week. Even though
North have been down in recent weeks and have
replaced their Coach we need to be very wary.
Their players will have something to prove to their
new Coach.
On the social side of things the Black and White
Ball last Saturday night was a great success. The
band on the night was great providing some really
good music. The roll up of in excess of 120 made
the night a real success.
Next week we meet Hobart at home so will be
having a President’s luncheon. This one will be
special with guest speaker being Tasmanian
Cricket Coach Tim Coyle. To book tickets call
Zianna during business hours 62729593.
The Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame dinner is
coming up Friday 8th July 2011 with our own Max
with both sides registering big wins against
It was great to see a large turnout at O’Keefe’s
We face a tough match against Burnie this
week, but the boys are looking forward to the
challenge and we can be assured of a great
game. These were our comments in last week’s
record, and how true they turned out to be. A very
exciting game from the first siren through to the
last, which saw the Bombers come away with
a 5 point win. There was deathly silence in the
grandstand at one stage when Burnie lined up
for goal, which fortunately for us was a point. We
take on Devonport today, and need to ensure that
we show the same intensity as last week.
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Developing safer and healthier communities.
AFL Tasmania supports the Good Sports Program
Traditionally, alcohol and sport have been closely linked in Australia. Community-based sports clubs can
play an important part in reducing alcohol problems by promoting safe drinking and providing appropriate
role models for young people.
What is the Good Sports program?
A national initiative of the Australian Drug
Foundation, the Good Sports program aims to
develop safer and healthier communities.
It is a free program that helps sporting clubs
change their culture to become more focussed
on young people and families, and less on the
consumption of alcohol at high risk levels.
Good Sports works to create sustainable change
by enabling sporting clubs to change their systems
and practices around the responsible serving of
alcohol. The program has been developed to:
• Reduce general alcohol consumption and risky
drinking,
• Reduce alcohol-related problems, particularly
drink driving
• Increase viability and influence within the
community.
Displaying the Good Sports logo sends an
important message to club members and the
community. It confirms that the club promotes a
responsible attitude towards alcohol, providing a
safe environment for players, members, families
and supporters. This brings many benefits to
the participating clubs and helps to build more
connected, satisfied and resilient communities
where violence, drink driving and road trauma is
reduced. It also helps to improve the health and
fitness of community members resulting in more
viable and family focused sporting clubs.
The Australian Drug Foundation is also launching
the “Build your game program” a mental health
intitiative, within sporting clubs.
If your sporting club is one of a large number
across Tasmania who has previously been involved,
we encourage you to re-register your interest. Of
course, new clubs are also welcome to register and
AFL Tasmania is encouraging all footy clubs to show
their support for this program and get involved.
You can find out more about Goods Sports and
register your club online at www.goodsports.com.au
YOUNG GUNS | Round 3 NAB Under 18 National Championships
Tasmania v NSW/ACT Under 18
Tasmania played New South Wales/ACT at both Under
18 and Under 16 level last weekend at Aurora Stadium.
Impressive performances by John McKenzie and Ben
Brown helped Tasmania record their first victory of the
NAB U18 AFL Championships, defeating NSW/ACT by 18
points at Aurora Stadium on Saturday.
The victory was set up for the home team in the first
three quarters as ruckman Ben Brown dominated all
over the ground, accumulating 12 possessions and 12
hit-outs before injuring his shoulder early in the third
term to take no further part in the team’s 13.13 (91) to
10.13 (73) victory.
Midfielder John McKenzie elevated his NAB AFL Draft
prospects with a scintillating first half, racking up 19 of
his 25 disposals while Brody Mihocek was lively with 24
possessions and 7 marks.
Julian Dobosz was also influential in the victory with the
forward kicking four goals from his 17 touches.
NSW/ACT started well, kicking the first goal of the match
but Tasmania hit back almost instantly as Ben Brown
started to find plenty of the football while winning the
centre bounce and clearances. Tasmania appeared to
be harder at the football and went into the first change
with a six-point lead.
With the momentum behind them, Tasmania continued
their high intensity game kicking the first three goals
of the quarter as McKenzie continued to win the ball
out of the midfield. The home team had an opportunity
to go into the main break with a comfortable lead but
squandered their chances, kicking six behinds and two
out-of-bounds on the full for the term.
Two goals to Tasmanian John McKenzie in the third
quarter all but put the game out of reach for the RAMS
as the home team piled on six goals to one to head into
the last break with a 46-point lead.
NSW/ACT came out determined to get their way back
into the contest in the final quarter and despite getting
to within two goals, Tasmania steadied to record their
first win of the championships.
Tasmania today plays the Northern Territory and will play
Queensland on Thursday in their final game of the Under
18 National Championships.
