THIS WEEK’S COVER
Honouring Tasmania’s
Football Icons.
From the editor
This week’s 2011 Wrest Point State
League is full of potentially close tussles.
Clarence versus North Hobart and
Lauderdale versus North Launceston
should both shape the finals series. A
couple of regional derbies in the north
of the state should also be worth the
entrance fee. Finally, the southern
Magpies and the Tigers are both desperate
to get a win to re-ignite their seasons.
The RECORD is reflecting on the
culmination of the 2011 Tasmanian
Football Hall of Fame celebration with
the announcement of a new ‘Icon’ of
Tasmanian football: Rodney Eade. More
than 500 members of the football family
attended the gala induction ceremony at
Wrest Point last evening. The View From
Here, Our Great Game and State of Affairs
all review the most important recognition
program in Tasmanian football.
In the coming weeks we will feature
Tasmania’s U18 and U16 National
Championship teams which are battling to
retain titles secured last year. The U18s
completed their program on Thursday
after we went to press. Victory against
Queensland would ensure Tasmania lifts
consecutive titles for the first time.
Have a great Hall of Fame weekend at the
footy.
VIEW FROM HERE |Hall of Fame - Recognising those who contribute to Tasmanian Football
Last night was the seventh year that AFL Tasmania has presented our Tasmanian Football Hall
of Fame induction dinner, which is the final and most significant element of the annual Hall of
Fame project.
Following our 2004 Tasmanian Team of the Century
project, establishing a Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame
was a natural progression. Our Tasmanian Football
Hall of Fame is uniquely different to a number of other
football and sporting Hall of Fame events throughout the
nation.
Tasmanian football’s is unique for the following reasons:
1. We have three levels of induction – inductees can
then be elevated to a ‘Legend’ and then a Legend
can be further elevated to ‘Icon’ status.
We have done this because we believe it is important
to recognise the wonderful contribution of the many
great players, coaches, umpires, administrators,
members of the media, club volunteers and sports
trainers whom have contributed to community
football in all three regions of Tasmania or on a
nation scale. To date we have 257 Inductees which
is still not that many when you consider that this
covers almost 150 years of football in Tasmania.
However, to become one of the now 36 legends your
contribution has had to be enormously significant
and then to be elevated to be one only 10 icons your
contribution to our game has had to be significant on
a nation scale.
Icons in Tasmania’s Hall of Fame will be considered
for nomination for inclusion in the Australian Football
Hall of Fame and to the Tasmanian Sporting Hall of
Fame.
2. A key aspect of our Hall of Fame is also the annual
induction of community football aspects of our great
game, those being enshrined under three special
categories (including 2011 inductees):
- Great Club – Clarence District Football Club
- Legendary Team – Ulverstone’s 1976 state
premiership team
- Memorable Game – Tasmanian Devils versus
Geelong Cats in 2003 VFL final at Bellerive Oval,
being synonymous of a golden era of Tasmanian
football finals in the VFL.
We have and will also continue to induct special
category elements into our Hall of Fame, the
most famous example being the induction of the
Queenstown ‘gravel’ Oval in 2007.
These community football inductions enable AFL
Tasmania to “tell and record the story” of Tasmanian
football at the same time that we pay tribute and
recognise the significant contribution of many individuals
to our game in Tasmania or nationally.
With Rodney Eade elevated to Icon, Bob ‘ Tassie’
Johnson elevated to Legend and the induction of people
such as Ben Harrison, Trent Nicholls, and Simon Minton-
Connell this reinforces our recognition of those who have
performed on the national football stage.
However, the elevation of Ivor Warne-Smith and Colin
Robertson to Legends and also the induction of the
likes of Max Griffiths, Wayne Wing and Graham Fox
demonstrate we will always recognise those who
perform in Tasmania
MITCH WILLIAMSON
Due to a serious back injury Mitch Williamson has only played a handful
of games in the past two years. He has set a great example by
overcoming his injury problems and is back to his best. He previously
won the SFL and Club leading goal kicking awards. Mitch possesses
untapped potential and is a prodigious kick and we look forward to
further great success for him in the future.
OUR GREAT GAME | Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame Icon 2011
Rodney Eade
Glenorchy / Hawthorn / Brisbane / Brisbane Reserves / North Melbourne Reserves / Sydney Swans /
Western Bulldogs
In 1975 Rodney Eade’s senior football career began
with a state premiership with the Peter Hudson
led Glenorchy. In little time the elusive wingman
nicknamed ‘Rocket’ was, following Huddo’s advice, in
the brown and gold of Hawthorn.
After playing in a premiership side in his first season
(1976) he enjoyed further success with the Hawks
in 1978, 83 and 86 in a playing career of more than
250 senior games.
In 1988 he was also honoured by his home state for
the first time when named captain of the Tasmanian
team that competed in the bicentennial National
Carnival.
Following a successful coaching apprenticeship with
Brisbane and North Melbourne ‘Rocket’ took over the
Sydney Swans in 1996 and led them into their senior
first grand final in 50 years.
Rodney Eade continues today as coach of the strong
Western Bulldogs outfit and this may yet prove to be
his greatest challenge as he aims for the ultimate
football triumph – an AFL premiership.
Eade is amongst the longest serving AFL coaches
and following three consecutive preliminary final
appearances with the Western Bulldogs in 2008,
2009 and 2010 he continues as one of the most
highly regarded leaders in the game.
In recognition of the high regard in which he is held
by the Tasmanian football community, he was chosen
in the Tasmanian Team of the Century on the wing.
First inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of
Fame in 2005, he was elevated to Legend upon
being inducted and deservedly joins the pantheon of
Icons in 2011.
Rodney Eade’s Record of Achievement
OUR GREAT GAME | Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame Chairmans Message
Chairman’s Message - 2011
Welcome to the seventh Tasmanian Football Hall of
Fame.
Since our last meeting we can report that our new
Wrest Point State League continues to receive
wonderful support from all forms of Tasmania’s
sporting and news media and from the ‘football
loving’ public of Tasmania. Our season opening
game has been the highest attended State League
game in Australia thus far in 2011. We appreciate
such support and we will do whatever we can to
continue to build our unique ‘whole of state’ football
competition.
As well, we congratulate and thank all leagues and
clubs for their on-going achievement in ensuring
Tasmania has the highest football participation rate
in the nation and which ensures we have a vibrant
footy heart beating across the State.
In 2011 we will once again welcome a number of
new inductees, 12 in fact, a memorable game,
a legendary team, and a great club for their
contribution to the game.
When considering those who have been inducted
we also have the opportunity to elevate to a higher
level of recognition those whose contribution is
most significant. In this regard we will honour a new
Icon in 2011 and elevate a further 3 players to the
Legend status.
Tonight we will honour four truly great players of
Tasmanian football.
We will elevate into the pantheon of Icons one of only
two Tasmanians to play in 4 VFL / AFL premierships
and the only person to participate in over 500 senior
games at national level as player or coach. Rodney
‘Rocket’ Eade achieved this with Hawthorn, Brisbane,
Sydney and continues with Western Bulldogs.
From his beginnings on the wing with Glenorchy,
Rodney Eade has truly excelled at football and richly
deserves the highest recognition that Tasmanian
football can provide.
We will also honour, with elevation to Legend three
greats representing three fascinating eras of our
game. Ivor Warne-Smith was a giant of the first
50 years of football in the 20th century in both
Tasmania and Victoria, Bob ‘Tassie’ Johnson was
a triple premiership hero with Melbourne in their
golden era under Norm Smith after commencing in
Launceston’s northern suburbs and Colin Robertson
was the first and still the only Tasmanian to be
honoured with the Norm Smith Medal for best on
ground in an VFL / AFL Grand Final in between a
major contribution to football in north-west Tasmania.
Tonight we also pay homage to two of our greatest
Tasmanian football Icons. We recognise the passing
of the incomparable Darrel Baldock and indeed
celebrate his magnificent contribution to Tasmanian
football. We also celebrate the late Horrie Gorringe
who has become the first Tasmanian to play solely in
Tasmania and be inducted to the Australian Football
Hall of Fame.
Throughout the rich history of Tasmanian football
there have been aspects of the game and individuals
whose deeds and achievements remain embedded
in our memory and are worthy of recognition.
As always these events are designed to enable
the football family to come together and share,
remember and celebrate those who have given or
achieved in our game beyond just participating.
Football is the heartbeat of so many of our
communities, particularly in winter; in this way our
game is more than just a sport or a game. It is
significant part of the social, commercial and cultural
fabric of Tasmania.
To all who are this year honoured, and to those
recognised in previous years, congratulations and
thank you.
Please join with us and celebrate the Tasmanian
Football Hall of Fame for 2011.
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
In case of emergency, call Lance Spaulding.
North Hobart learnt this lesson during round 11 as
the Demons put a week of controversy behind it
with a 31-point win over Glenorchy at North Hobart
Oval. The Demons slumped to seventh after the loss
to Lauderdale, resulting in the sacking of playingcoach
Clinton Brown. Former Devils coach Lance
Spaulding was appointed to fill the void and had the
Jekyll and Hyde Demons on song on his first match
day in action. Spaulding made a significant change,
pushing small defender Justin Veitch forward and
had an immediate impact. Veitch was inspirational
laying tackle after tackle and bringing forward
pressure to the Demons. Not only did he kick two
himself, he gave away plenty with his intensity too
much for the Pies defenders. Demon’s forwards
Zeke Gardam (5 goals) and Paul Allison (4) were
on-song as the Demons dominated most of the day.
The Magpies now have only two wins from their last
seven games following four straight victories to start
the season. Although hit by injury, it is the lack of
work rate and desire that is frustrating coach Byron
Howard at present with his side now no guarantee to
see finals action.
Launceston appeared to face a difficult challenge in
the trip to West Park to take on Burnie, but a seven
goal to one second term killed the contest on the way
to a 73-point victory. While gun full-forward Brian
Finch was relatively well held to four goals, his offsider
Sonny Whiting booted five as the Blues midfield
of Tim Bristow, Scott Stephens, Sam O’Keefe and
Beau Green dominated.
Down at Lauderdale, Clarence showed its fellow
Eastern Shore team which who is clearly the best
side south of Oatlands with a 66-point belting of
the Bombers. The lead was out to 94-points at the
last change as former Lauderdale forward Mitch
Williamson kicked eight goals for the Roos. Clarence
has now won seven games straight to be two games
clear in second spot, while Lauderdale remains a win
and percentage outside the top five.
North Launceston has snuck a game clear into third
thanks to a standard six-goal win over Devonport
at Aurora Stadium. Allan O’Sign continued his
purple patch with five goals in a best on ground
performance. He has now bagged 12 goals in his last
three games – all Northern Bomber victories.
South Launceston appears to have avoided the
wooden spoon for the first time thanks to a 36-point
victory over Hobart at Youngtown Oval. The Bulldogs
flew out of the blocks with a six-goal to one first term.
Rory Mansell and Braden McGee booted six goals
each for the victors in the Bulldogs best performance
of the year. It was another shocking performance
by the Tigers coming off their humiliating 133-point
belting by Clarence at home. They have now lost five
in a row as their season sinks into the abyss.
BURNING QUESTIONS:
Can North Hobart continue the display it showed last
round or will it revert to its old bad habits against
Clarence this week?
How will former Melbourne high-flyer Russell
Robertson go in his one off game for Burnie against
Devonport this Saturday?
This week we welcome back Russell Robertson
for a one off game with his old club against our
arch rivals Devonport. Can you imagine the
conversations going on this week between Glen
Lutwyche and Max Brown at Ulverstone HS. They
will be pulling what hair they have left out trying to
work out who will play on him.
Robbo left the Dockers back in 1996 when he
was drafted by the Melbourne Football Club.
Making his debut in 1997, Robbo quickly set
about making himself a household name with
his spectacular marking and goal kicking ability.
After a career of 13 years and 228 AFL game
Robbo retired at the end of the 2009 season.
After todays game Robbo will be available to sign
autographs in the Devonport Clubrooms before
returning West Park Oval where the club will be
hosting an evening with Robbo. All sponsors,
supporters and members are welcome to join the
playing group for a night to remember.
A Mixed Bag...
A lack lustre start by our colts had them on the
ropes against a ferocious Lauderdale. A last
quarter comeback almost won us the game. Josh
Nibbs and Mitchell Grace played good games
helping the side recover a draw.
A battle that had been heavily written about in
the media was played out in the seniors. Our boys
bought their A-game leading by 53 points at half
time. Our Eastern Shore rivals provided some
competition in the last quarter with our boys
winning by 66 points. Mitch Williamson starred
along with Brennan savage in the win.
Special Mention Segment
This week’s highlighted volunteers are the three
Button Brothers. Not only are they one-eyed
Clarence supporters but they are also valued
also helping to run the raffle. Thank you for all
Every week the senior list has a new teenager
who steps up and shows their ability to play at
the top level. This week against the Northern
Bombers that player was Aaron McNab. Aaron is a
tall forward who over the past month has become
Devonport main target in the forward line. His
improvements were clear last weekend when he
bagged 5 goals at Aurora Stadium in the sides 6
goal loss.
This week Russell Robertson will be pulling on
the Burnie jumper against the Magpies. Players
have been lining up to take a shot at playing on
the Melbourne Football Club legend. Coach Glen
Lutwyche will have plenty of options to choose
from including youngsters Kaiden Howe or Jack
Stokes or maybe he will go for experience heads
of Sam Hess or captain Al Clements.
Last Saturday July 2nd the Devonport Football
Club held their annual ball. It was a great night
with great entertainment provided by The Unit.
The Football Club would like to thank all the
people who were in attendance and hope that you
can come along and support other functions in
Today’s games vs Hobart are crucial games to
lift us for a finals birth. The return from injury of
several players since that time gives us renewed
optimism for the future. The team has the
potential to go all the way this year but it won’t just
happen. This game is a vital one for the remainder
of the season and it should be a launching pad to
turning around recent results and heading towards
the finals.
Today’s game is a big milestone for our former
Captain, William Leitch medallist and all round
great player for the Club, in Jesse Crouch. Jesse
reaches life membership by playing his 150th
game. On behalf of the Club we wish Jesse well
and hope the players lift to make it memorable.
Jaimes Wiggins our former GM and Football
Manager resigned last week and we wish him well
for his future. Jaimes will always be remembered
for his major role in the recruitment of Jason
Akermanis and that memorable first game
under lights at KGV with Aker playing his first
game in Tassie. His contribution to the Club with
other recruits, sports nights and his informative
newsletters have been real positives for the Club.
weekend. Well done boys!
A tremendous effort!
Last Saturday we were privileged to watch an
moving so quickly the officials were having trouble
keeping up. The game ended in a draw following
a point after the siren by Clarence. Our senior
Whilst we came away with a win last week against
Devonport, it was not one of our strongest games.
With three wins in a row we now sit 3rd on the
Ladder but we face some tough games in the
coming weeks.
Today we congratulate Allan O’Sign on his 150th
game with the Club. Allan played his first senior
game with North Launceston as a 15 year old
in 2001. In the same year he was named joint
winner of the NTFL best First Year Senior Player.
During the past 10 years Allan has been a
TASSIE TIPSTERS |Demons and Dogs cause upsets for Tipsters!
Tipsters had a torrid time last week in both the AFL and
TSL. While no one except the most diehard Bombers
supporters selected them to upset the Cats in the
AFL, in the TSL the teams that have changed coaches
in 2011 both had victories that have helped redefine
their seasons. The leading tipsters, deniswiggins
and hjones, continued to share time on top of the
leaderboard.
This week’s winner Mrs Jennifer Mayne of Kingston
tipped 5 out of 5 and has won the weekly cash prize of
$250 and a Radio Sport National KB Sherrin.
YOUNG GUNS | Round 3 NAB Under 18 National Championships
Tasmania v NSW/ACT Under 18
Tasmania played New South Wales/ACT at both Under
18 and Under 16 level last weekend at Aurora Stadium.
Impressive performances by John McKenzie and Ben
Brown helped Tasmania record their first victory of the
NAB U18 AFL Championships, defeating NSW/ACT by 18
points at Aurora Stadium on Saturday.
The victory was set up for the home team in the first
three quarters as ruckman Ben Brown dominated all
over the ground, accumulating 12 possessions and 12
hit-outs before injuring his shoulder early in the third
term to take no further part in the team’s 13.13 (91) to
10.13 (73) victory.
Midfielder John McKenzie elevated his NAB AFL Draft
prospects with a scintillating first half, racking up 19 of
his 25 disposals while Brody Mihocek was lively with 24
possessions and 7 marks.
Julian Dobosz was also influential in the victory with the
forward kicking four goals from his 17 touches.
NSW/ACT started well, kicking the first goal of the match
but Tasmania hit back almost instantly as Ben Brown
started to find plenty of the football while winning the
centre bounce and clearances. Tasmania appeared to
be harder at the football and went into the first change
with a six-point lead.
With the momentum behind them, Tasmania continued
their high intensity game kicking the first three goals
of the quarter as McKenzie continued to win the ball
out of the midfield. The home team had an opportunity
to go into the main break with a comfortable lead but
squandered their chances, kicking six behinds and two
out-of-bounds on the full for the term.
Two goals to Tasmanian John McKenzie in the third
quarter all but put the game out of reach for the RAMS
as the home team piled on six goals to one to head into
the last break with a 46-point lead.
NSW/ACT came out determined to get their way back
into the contest in the final quarter and despite getting
to within two goals, Tasmania steadied to record their
first win of the championships.
Tasmania today plays the Northern Territory and will play
Queensland on Thursday in their final game of the Under
18 National Championships.
