8480 fans at KGV Oval to
launch season 2011.
From the editor
Welcome to the Wrest Point State
League RECORD for 2011.
This year we have wrought some
further changes that we hope will be
well received by footy fans during the
fixture. In this regard we welcome back
Flying Colours who will continue as our
design and print experts.
Following considerable preparation
and planning we have completed
production of our colour content.
As well we have had the chance to
produce for Glenorchy DFC a Souvenir
RECORD for their record breaking
season launch game on 2 April.
The Magpies have set a high bar for
other Clubs to reach in respect of
their promotion of the League and we
feature their work in our new double
page feature on topical football issues
and players. The 2011 season has
been launched like no other and the
RECORD is pleased to have been there.
We have again set a high goal for
the RECORD in 2011 to consistently
provide the highest quality, timely and
cost effective production and which
will be the most admired sporting
periodical produced in Tasmania.
Have a colourful day at the footy.
VIEW FROM HERE | Welcome to season 2011
Welcome to the 2011 Wrest Point State League season.
This is the third year that the competition has been
in operation and it looks like being one of the closest
fought out contests for the premiership since the
rebirth of the State League.
All Clubs have been very proactive during the off
season on the player recruitment front both internally
and externally which will hold the competition in good
stead from an even and competitive on field point
of view. The ability of the Burnie and Glenorchy to
acquire the playing services of former AFL players
Jason Laycock and Jason Akermanis respectively is
nothing short of fantastic for the competition and
will hopefully assist with either attracting former AFL
players to the League or former home grown players
that may have migrated to other State League
competitions such as the WAFL, QAFL, SANFL and
the VFL back to our own Tasmanian Wrest Point
State League (TSL).
One of AFL Tasmania’s key principles when setting
up the rebirth of a whole of State competition was to
ensure that all TSL clubs are genuinely competitive
on the field and this is still very much a key going
forward today.
Season 2011 sees a new structure implemented
with the two teams being Seniors and Colts. The
Colts competition is essentially a merger between
the U18’s and reserves and we believe after much
debate with the clubs that this structure is the best
way forward. The TSL competition is forthwith for
the best 220 senior players in the State and the 220
next generation of senior players.
For the remainder of the current term of the TSL
license agreements (which ends at the completion
of the 2013 season) the structure of Seniors and
Colts will not alter. It is important to provide all clubs
with stability to enable them to manage their player
lists accordingly and which AFL Tasmania believes
is an integral element of each TSL clubs’ football
departments.
As many people would be aware, in the off-season
the Devonport Football Club was placed on notice
that if you cannot manage your fiscal responsibilities
as a club then you place your TSL license at risk.
The circumstances of the Devonport Football Club
have provided a clear warning to all clubs of their
fiscal responsibilities in the TSL. The Devonport
Football Club Board should be congratulated on their
significant achievement of raising the necessary
funds to meet AFL Tasmania’s requirements to keep
their license agreement. Congratulations should also
go to the community of Devonport as it clearly shows
they are fully behind their State League club. Great
effort to all and sundry!
Finally, I wish the 10 Wrest Point State League clubs
the very best for season 2011 on and off the field.
Stephens is a great stalwart of Launceston and Tasmanian football. He
started playing football for Launceston as a junior and has racked up
more than 100 senior games also. He was a member of the 2000 and
2001 Tassie Mariners and the 2001 National Championship winning
side. He also played with the Tassie Devils from 2002 – 2005 and
2007 and was Co-Captain that year.
Stephens’ 2011 season mirrored his effort in a stellar 2006 when he
was runner-up in the Darrell Baldock Medal and the Examiner, Advocate
and Coast FM Player of the Year. He is a triple premiership player and
triple Best and Fairest for the Blues.
The inaugural award in 2009 was won by Clarence’s Jeromey Webberley
who in the same season came second in the Tassie Medal, played in
the Roos premiership, won his club Best and Fairest and was drafted to
Richmond.
We are very pleased to have the on-going support of RACT Insurance
for the 2011 ‘Player of the Year Award’ as well as the expertise of our
print media partners, The Advocate, The Examiner and The Mercury, in
determining votes for games played in each region.
We wish every player well in 2011 as they strive to emulate Scott
Stephens and Jeromey Webberley and become the RACT Insurance
Player of the Year.
OUR GREAT GAME |Aker fever rocks KGV
KGV Oval has not rocked like it did last night since Mark Knopfler belted out Money For Nothing
when he led British super group Dire Straits at the Glenorchy ground in the late 1980s.
Instead of a rock band, it was football’s very own rock
star Jason Akermanis who brought a record 8480
spectators through the gates to inspire Glenorchy to
a 36-point win over dual reigning premier Clarence in
his TSL debut.
Akermanis, the Brownlow Medallist and three-time
Brisbane premiership player, was rusty early on
before the “Aker swagger” returned.
The longer the game went, the better he got, finishing
with 14 kicks, nine handballs, seven marks, five
tackles and a trademark second quarter goal after
swooping on a loose ball.
Akermanis said: “[It was my] first game for a while at
a really high intensity. I felt like I had jelly legs in the
first half and nothing was going right, but in the end I
worked into the game and I cannot say how good the
boys were. And the crowd? It was local footy at its
best tonight.”
The event was a huge success for Glenorchy -- a club
which gambled when trying to lure the controversial
champion south. But it paid big dividends last night.
The large crowd thoroughly enjoyed the game, and
while the traditional meat pie might have been cold
enough to warrant being served on an icy pole stick,
just about everything else ran perfectly.
Even for Akermanis, used to playing in front of
massive AFL crowds and in grand finals, it was a
big occasion. He said: “I was a bit nervous but I’m
always nervous. I thought the boys put on a great
show -- the music, the whole lot.”
The event, played under lights at KGV for the first
time, was a massive positive advertisement for
grassroots football and the Wrest Point State League.
EDITOR’S NOTE
The crowd at the 2011 season launch game
between Glenorchy and Clarence has been
recorded officially as 8480.
This easily surpasses the record for a
Tasmanian State League game, which was
5500 for North Launceston vs Clarence in
2000 at Aurora Stadium, and also the ground
record for KGV, which was 6520 for Glenorchy
vs Clarence in 1966.
achievement. Congratulations!
OUR GREAT GAME | Aker fever rocks KGV
MAGPIES MAGIC AS ROOS FALL
THE hype leading into the Wrest Point State League
‘Season Launch’ match was all about Jason Akermanis
... But Glenorchy proved it will be no one-man band
in 2011, ruthlessly disposing of reigning TSL premier
Clarence in a historic match at KGV last night.
In front of the biggest crowd in State League history,
the Magpies beat the Roos at their own game to win
well -- 16.6 (102) to 9.12 (66).
The official crowd of 8480 spectators turned up
to see Glenorchy’s boom recruit Akermanis. And
the former Brownlow medallist and three-time AFL
premiership star didn’t disappoint, but the Pies had a
host of contributors who shone on the big stage.
Clarence is renowned for its uncompromising,
pressure football but it was the Magpies who dished
up the intensity to send a clear message they will
again be a force in the State League.
Roos coach Brett Geappen was left shocked after the
match, describing the loss as the worst from his players
in the two years of the Wrest Point State League.
But the story of the night was Glenorchy, who, after
a horror 2010 campaign, had a gruelling five month
pre-season pay-off in spades as the slick and fit outfit
outgunned their opponents.
Fellow recruit Ben Reynolds provided a key target all
game and finished with three goals while unheralded
youngster Shaun Collis -- who joined the club from
New Norfolk -- showed he will be a more than handy
pick-up after kicking the Pies’ first two goals of the
match, finishing with four.
Nathan Matthews was a rock in defence all night and
was only beaten for best on ground honours by Jake
Cox, who put his own disappointments from last year
behind him with a flawless display.
The classy midfielder didn’t play in Glenorchy’s finals
loss last season because of disciplinary reasons but
he was in sublime touch last night, booting three
goals to go with his numerous possessions.
The star of the show, Akermanis, was clearly rusty,
having not played any form of football since his final
Courtesy of ADAM SMITH, The Mercury
VFL appearance last July, but worked his way into the
contest and finished with 23 possessions and 1.2.
Geappen admitted the loss was a reality check for
the two-time premiers, who now face Burnie on the
road next weekend.
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
It took just one game for Glenorchy to show how lucrative its investment in Jason Akermanis
has been and that to win a third straight TSL flag will be so much tougher for Clarence.
Finally, after a huge build up full of hype and
excitement, Glenorchy and Clarence kicked off
the 2011 TSL season under lights and it did not
fail to deliver.
Glenorchy, resplendent with Brownlow Medallist and
three-time AFL premiership player Akermanis in its
new look line up as well as former Devonport duo
Ben Reynolds and Rhys Mott plus New Norfolk’s
Shaun Collis, were going to be tested from the outset
against the Roos.
A TSL and KGV Oval record crowd for a football match
of 8480 turned up, packing the venue and creating
an exciting atmosphere not seen in decades.
A team filled with new recruits is supposed to take
time to gel, but the Magpies were outstanding from
the start. The Roos were taken completely by surprise
by how well Glenorchy teamed from the outset.
With Jake Cox swinging across the midfield and
pushing forward, and Nathan Matthews sweeping
everything up in defence to start numerous attacking
forays, the Pies had all the momentum.
Up forward, Collis prospered in his first TSL game for
Glenorchy, booting a team-high four goals through
his clever play, while Reynolds was a key focal point
across half forward and pushing deeper with three
majors, while Cox also chipped in with three telling
goals from the midfield.
Tellingly, Glenorchy won every quarter, leading by 11
points at quarter time, and building it to 17 at the
half, 27 at three-quarter time and finally inflicting just
the Roos second defeat in two seasons, this time by
a convincing 36 points.
But all eyes were on Akermanis.
No doubt he struggled at first, as he was the first to
admit post-match.
His first statistic in his TSL debut was a free kick
against for a push in the back.
But the longer the game went, the better Akermanis
became, roaming the forward line with the
occasional run in the middle of the ground as he
found his feet after not playing a competitive game
since July the previous year.
A crunching hip and shoulder on Clarence captain
Nick Paine got him into the game in the second term,
and it was not long after that he kicked his first goal
after swooping on a loose ball and slotting the goal
from 20m.
He ended up with 23 touches for the night and 1.2,
finishing the match with a trademark handstand to
delight the crowd.
The night was an outstanding success for the TSL
and Glenorchy, with Akermanis returning today when
the Magpies take on the Tigers at the TCA Ground.
COMPETITION RESULTS AND LADDERS| Round 1 - Preview 2011
In the past there used to be a football off-season. Players, coaches and staff would have
a few months off over summer and take up more leisurely pursuits. Just like the AFL, the
new TSL does not rest in the ‘off-season’, and the movement of players and coaches is an
indication of how football has become a year round endeavor.
Mixed results in the season opener, as the
young Colts got a good win but the seniors
going down to the arch rival.
Good performances by Jack Gleeson and
Captain Adrian Hill, along with a great
performance by Reyne Westbury booting 6
goals saw the Colts get off to a great start for
2011.
With the Colt’s game completed attention
turned to the much anticipated senior clash
and the debut of Jason Akermanis. After
what was expected to be a close affair
unfortunately we were not able to hit top gear
and the Magpies were just too strong winning
convincingly.
Thank you to all our sponsors for your support
with special mention to Diagrind and Raine
and Horne for their joint major sponsorship
and to Parmic Fire Protection and Ampac for
their naming right sponsorship.
In future we will feature each week one a club
personality so if you would like to nominate
someone please send a short outline of no
more than 80 words to the club email at
of business each Friday.
The South Launceston Bulldogs look forward
to the 2011 season with anticipation. After
a less than desirable result in last year’s TSL
competition the club has done some solid
recruiting and preseason training that will
hopefully pay off in this year’s competition.
Tonight’s game against North Launceston
always promises a rich rivalry which should
produce some great football played in good
spirit. Tonight will also mark the possible
senior debut of Mitch Thorp, Rory Mansell,
Beau Thorp, Tom Larby, Khaya Sikiti, Johnviss
Moagi , Ben Keam and Marcus Lee.
It is also worth mentioning that today marks
achievement that should be congratulated.
We encourage readers to consider attending
our next function to be held on April 17th at
the Youngtown Club rooms. The “Bulldogs
involving players and coaches promises to be
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Aurora Energy Synonymous with Tasmanian Football
The name Aurora Energy has become synonymous with AFL football in Tasmania since it
secured the naming rights for the former York Park back in 2006, making it the home of AFL
in Tasmania.
But the relationship between Aurora and football in
Tasmania is much deeper than that, with the energy
company’s support for junior football in the state now
in its 13th year.
The Aurora Footy in Schools program, which is
conducted through a partnership with AFL Tasmania,
brings the great Australian game to more than 8,000
Tasmanian primary school children a year.
More than 117,000 Tasmanians have experienced
the program including some of the games current top
line players such as Jack Riewoldt (Richmond), Grant
Birchall (Hawthorn), Justin Sherman and Brodie Moles
(Western Bulldogs), Tom Collier and Aaron Cornelius
(Brisbane Lions), Aaron Joseph (Carlton), Sam
Lonergan (Essendon), Colin Garland (Melbourne) and
Nathan Grima (North Melbourne).
Members of non-traditional Australian football
communities are among those getting their first taste
of the great Australian game through the Aurora
Energy Footy in Schools program.
Former Brisbane Lions forward and current AFL
Tasmania Business Development Manager Trent
Bartlett said children of all backgrounds were
enthusiastic about the clinics.
“One of the great aspects of Australian football
is that people of all shapes, sizes and ethnic
backgrounds play and add their own flavour to the
game,’’ said Mr Bartlett.
“There is a whole generation of Tasmanian boys and
girls who are getting their first taste of the game under
the Aurora Footy in Schools program.
“The program brings the game to all corners of
Tasmania enabling children to rub shoulders with the
stars of the Wrest Point State League and learn from
the experts”.
“The Aurora Footy in Schools program is a key to our
objective of increasing participation in Australian
football.’’
Aurora Energy Public Relations Manager Richard
Wilson said the program fitted perfectly with Aurora’s
purpose – to see the Tasmanian community prosper.
YOUNG GUNS | State Academy Program begins well in 2011
Welcome to the first edition of Young Guns for season 2011.
Throughout the year we will follow talented young players
around the state and provide insightful stories into the
progress of these players through both the Wrest Point
State League and the Tasmania Under 16 and Under 18
Academy programs.
Season 2011 is the second year of a new National talent
development program known as the State Academies
Program. The State Academies exist at Under 16 and
Under 18 level and replace the previous Under 16 and
Under 18 or Tassie Mariners programs.
Forty players in both the Under 18 and Under 16
age groups are selected to form two State Academy
squads that will train and be developed collectively
and individually over the 2011 season. The focus is on
season long development of individual players, rather
than just the preparation of a State team to travel to the
National Championships.
2011 State Academy Program Coaching Staff
• State Academy U18 Coach – Mathew Armstrong
• State Academy U16 Coach – Adam Sanders
• Strength & Conditioning & Rehabilitation Manager –
David Kinsella
• North-west Academy U18 Assistant – Richard
Lakeland
• Southern Academy U18 Assistants – Dale Gorringe &
Lance Spaulding
• North-west Academy U16 Assistant– Troy Davies
• Southern Academy U16 Assistant – Nick Davey
• Northern Academy Assistant – Scott Stephens
Players in the Under 18 age group trained regionally
around the state in a 6 week selection period prior to
Christmas. They have since been completing up to 5 group
and individual sessions a week based on their individual
development programs and have attended two camps.
Critical to the development of players in the program will
be the opportunity to train and play with their home Wrest
Point State League clubs. This is a terrific environment for
young talented players to experience a different type of
development and is one of the advantages that our young
players have over some programs interstate, for example
the TAC Cup.
April sees all State Under 18 Academy members playing
the first four rounds with their Wrest Point State League
clubs, prior to a 7 game Under 18 campaign.
Tasmania will host four U16 or U18 State games in 2011
on the following dates:
Saturday May 14
