needed. Employees hired within the last 30 days of
the winter operating season who are required to wear
a helmet, will be issued a complimentary rental
voucher.
Employees who own their own helmets may use their
current helmets as long as the helmet is compliant
with ASTM F 2040-06 and meets SSRC standards,
including appearance. Employees will not be
reimbursed for helmets that they will wear while on
duty but chose to purchase without the voucher.
Helmets may be subject to inspection by your
supervisor. If your supervisor feels your helmet does
not meet our standards, then you will be issued a
voucher that you may use to obtain a helmet that
meets company standards, or, if you prefer, you may
replace it on your own.
Temporary employees, or employees on temporary
assignment (i.e. TeamBoat) will be issued a
complimentary voucher for a helmet rental.
Employees who do not ski or ride as part of their
position and who therefore are not eligible for a $50
voucher, will receive a special 35% discount on a
helmet purchased for their personal use at Steamboat
Ski & Sport. Eligible dependents may also receive a
35% discount at Steamboat Ski & Sport for the
purchase of a helmet for themselves.
Employee/dependent passes must be presented in
order to take advantage of this offer. These discounts
are only available for helmets to be used by the
employee or eligible dependent.
The vouchers and helmets purchased or rented with
the vouchers or with the discount, may not be sold,
transferred, loaned, bartered or traded.
Helmet Inspection and Replacement
Full time skiing and riding positions will be eligible
for a replacement helmet every two seasons. Part
time will be eligible every three seasons. In order to
qualify for a replacement voucher the helmet must be
returned to employee’s manager. Employees who
lose/misplace their helmet prior to qualifying for a
replacement will be responsible for obtaining their
own replacement, but will receive the 35% discount
at Steamboat Ski & Sport.
Seasonal employees who plan on returning the next
season my retain possession of their helmet during
the off season. If a seasonal employee returns
without a usable helmet they will be charged the
replacement value of their helmet (cost to Steamboat
Ski & Sport). Employees may retain their helmet
following conclusion or termination of employment
unless they are terminated for cause, in which case
the helmet should be returned along with the uniform.
In the event that the helmet is damaged during the
course and scope of duty, it should be presented to
the Risk Manager for inspection. If there is no visual
damage, a discussion of the impact the helmet has
experienced will ensue. If deemed appropriate, a
voucher for a replacement helmet will be issued. No
replacement voucher will be provided if the helmet
was damaged while the employee was off duty while
using it, or if the helmet is lost or intentionally
damaged.
Warnings and Responsibilities
Warnings
1. All safety equipment has limitations. Read and
follow all the manufacturers’ instructions carefully.
2. Helmets are designed to absorb shock by partial
destruction of the energy absorbing liner. This
damage may not be visible. Therefore, if subjected to
a severe blow, the helmet should be destroyed and
replaced even if it appears undamaged.
3. No helmet can protect the wearer from all
foreseeable accidents. Depending on the type of
impact, even a low speed accident can result in a
serious head injury or fatality.
4. A helmet can only provide a level of protection for
areas that it covers. It does not protect against all
head injuries or prevent injury to the face, neck or
spinal cord.
Employee Responsibilities
1. Always wear your helmet in the proper position.
2. Fasten your buckle and tighten your chin strap.
3. Check your adjustments every time you wear your
helmet.
4. Inspect your helmet regularly for signs of wear or
damage
5. Replace a helmet that has been subjected to a
severe blow
6. Don’t attach anything to the helmet unless
recommended by the manufacturer
7. Don’t wear anything hard or sharp under your
helmet
8. Don’t take risks just because you are wearing a
helmet
