Drama students from Bury
College gave a stage
performance about issues
experienced through
adolescence, including drugs,
domestic violence, bullying,
alcohol and social media abuse.
Bury Borough Manager Pete Riley
said: “This year’s performance by
Bury College was fantastic and
the key thing about this element is
that the pupils are learning from
their peers – we believe the
students can influence pupils’
behaviour in a different way to
parents, teachers and
professionals.”

New fire station opens in Bury
SCHOOLCHILDREN made history
when they officially opened Bury
Community Fire Station on Friday,
November 23.
Pupils from three primary schools
were invited as VIP guests to the
event after entering an art
competition to mark the building
of the new station on Magdalene
Road.
One special pupil, seven-year-old
Ellie McArthur from Old Hall
Primary School, was asked to
unveil a banner officially opening
the building after winning the top
prize.
She was joined by CFO Steve
McGuirk, Chairman Councillor
David Acton, Mayor of Bury
Councillor Joan Grimshaw,
Mayor’s Consort Mr Paul
Grimshaw, and High Sheriff of
Greater Manchester George
Almond, CBE.
Throughout the morning,
schoolchildren and guests
gathered in the engine house
where they were entertained by
GMFRS mascot, Cracker the fire
dog.
Green Watch firefighters
demonstrated the kitchen fire
safety unit – showing how quickly
