Station Manager Glyn O’Reilly said: “The allotment is open to the wider community and it’s a place for people with learning difficulties or a disability to enjoy a spot of gardening in a relaxed and secure environment where they can learn and socialise. “With carers and friends there too it was a great opportunity to take the fire engine so people could have a look inside and hear the sirens but also so that the crews could offer some winter and fire safety advice about having a working smoke alarm and the importance of having an escape route planned.” Organic vegetables, bee hives producing honey, fruit trees, hens and ducks are among the attractions at the Grassroots project, which provides an alternative day care facility for users. FORGET burning buildings and heroic rescues - an Oldham Firefighter has shown he’s a good egg by re-homing more than 50 battery hens. Firefighter Steve Broadhurst, who is based at Oldham Fire Station, got involved with the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) after hearing about it from a friend and today he keeps 28 of the birds on land next to his house. He said: “I’ve always liked animals and when I heard that you could re-home and give a new life to former battery hens, I thought it was a great idea. “I’ve been doing it for a number of years and it’s great, when they arrive some of them have nearly all of their feathers missing but before too long when you give them a bit of space to move around and some food and water they start to grow back. “They lay some great eggs too so everyone’s a winner!” The BHWT rescue the chickens from farms across the UK and Steve provides a happy ending for the birds when he re-homes some of them, meaning they live out the rest of their lives - around another seven or eight years – in relative ease.
