FR. LOU’S REFLECTION “War machine with implications” I can still vividly see it as if it was only yesterday: watching the 1953 movie “War of the Worlds.” Though seven at the time, I was so scared to see those machines coming from Mars, setting cites on fire, destroying everything around them, creating havoc and turmoil, that I had nightmares for several nights there after. Well, that’s the way many innocent people, in foreign countries feel when U.S.-made drones slam into homes of suspected terrorists. And though successful at times in killing their intended targets, many times, however, drones strike a home of a family, including children. The Associated Press, not too long ago, estimated that some four thousand children have been killed in the on-going War of the Drones, which is, in my view, unacceptable. Of course “bad guys” are generally targeted and killed, lessening the world misguided people, bent to do violence to gain footing for their own agenda. To capture individuals like these is desirable---but not by the use of drones. Several months ago, I wrote a reflection questioning America’s reliance on drones and its mass production. Today over seventy countries have the technology to place drones literally across the skies. And they are relatively inexpensive. As these drones are mass-produced their capacity will expand as well, creating a more ominous presence for our future. I view it as a moral issue when lives are taken, especially in a foreign land. My concern is also, as it applies to American citizens, the neglect of constitutional rights, most importantly with regards to the right of government to “eavesdrop” in ways never thought of. Christian Formation CHILDREN & YOUTH SAFETY ACTION PLAN: Sunday & Wed. Catechists, Aides, Office Managers and Sun. Evening Youth Ministry Small Group leaders are asked to attend an In-Service presented by Sgt. Patrick McCann of the Chesterfield County Police on Sunday, March 3 at 10:00 am in Condon Hall. Parents and Parishioners are invited to attend. Because of this meeting there are no Elementary Christian Formation classes on Sunday, March 3 or Wed. March 6. OPERATION RICE BOWL: Did you know that many people around the world wake up each morning not knowing if they will have enough to eat? In the small West African nation of Burkina Faso, 80% of the population are small farmers. Frequent droughts make it difficult to produce enough food for the year. Often, farmers can only grow enough to feed their families for 7 months. The rest of the year is called “the hungry season”. This week we give to CRS Rice Bowl to help small farmers around the world. Elementary CF families, your child received a Rice Bowl in their CF class last week. Please be sure to use the easy resources to deepen your family’s Lenten experience of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. This Lent may we deepen our relationship with Christ and recognize His face in the faces of all our brothers and sisters in need. If you did not receive a rice bowl and would like to take part in this Lenten program, contact Judy in the CF Office. BAPTISM PREPARATION: Call the parish office to register for Baptism preparation classes and to schedule your child’s Baptism. The next parish celebrations of Baptism are at Masses the weekend of April 27 & 28 and the two preparation sessions are Tuesdays, April 9 & 16. Parents please note – you must be registered in the parish and participating in the sacramental life of the church, that is participating at weekly Mass. PARENTS OF FIRST RECONCILIATION & FIRST EUCHARIST STUDENTS: the 2013 First Eucharist preparation dates: Feb. 19, Feb. 26, March 5 & March 12 at 7:00 pm. Babysitting available. FIRST EUCHARIST SACRAMENTAL POLICY: Diocesan regulations state that children who want to receive the sacrament of First Eucharist must have participated in religious education classes for two years and be participating in the sacramental life of the church regularly. VIRTUS/ BACKGROUND CHECKS: You must be over 18 to attend a VIRTUS session. All volunteers over 18 who work with children must also complete Background checks. Youth Ministry News CONFIRMATION SESSION 3 is Sunday February 24 at 4:00 p.m. in Condon Hall. All Confirmation youth and parents please check emails for any updates. Wednesdays at Trinity United Methodist on Sycamore St., Petersburg. We will serve 10 to 15 gallons of beef vegetable soup from 12pm to 12:45. We need soup makers, and servers (which includes set up & clean up from 11 to about 1:30). 1 gallon plastic screw top containers are in the closet in the Hall kitchen or bought at the Dollar Tree.
