SPECIAL REFLECTION BY FR. LOU “Another election, a pope this time”, Pt. 1 I, for one, was not terribly surprised at the news the other morning that Pope Benedict XVI has decided to resign from the “Chair of Peter.” His election, back in 2005, was spectacular, given his close relationship with his predecessor, John Paul II. Together, these two giants of the Church, have established an orthodoxy within the Church structure that was both celebrated and lamented for the past thirty years. John Paul was a philosopher whereas Benedict is the theologian. Benedict was guardian of that orthodoxy when he was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In other words, he defended the Church from being diluted in any way from those who would misdirect our core beliefs as handed down from the Apostles. What I admired the most about Pope Benedict is that he came upon the papacy that was shattered---and helped steer the Church in rough waters that didn’t topple it over. Despite following a master personality like John Paul, Benedict was humble and accepted being “the one who followed JPII.” In my follow-up reflection, I will cite some of my disappointments with Benedict and the missed opportunity, I believe, for the Church would have gained stature in our era of confusion within the Church. And finally, in school we were taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492---whereas Benedict is the first pope to resign since Gregory in 1415---that for a pope to come to terms with the frailties of life is amazing to me---and to his credit gave us a magnanimous gesture: who willingly gives up power and status these days? Popes make headlines by dying---not the death itself. This made the pope much more human to me. I remember when I was a kid in the orphanage, the nuns would have us come to the chapel to sing the song, “Long Live the Pope”--- for back then, it was an election till death. copyright, 2013, Lou Ruoff A PRAYER FOR RESOLUTION IN IRAN I pray, we, our community pray, O Lord God, for a good and just outcome in the discussions that are currently on going with Iran and five other nations, including our country. We implore that you inspire each person in these deliberations to act with a sincere conscience and a deep respect for humanity. We ask, Lord God, that the divine hand of your Son, Jesus, lead the way for all nations to let go of all weapons of mass destruction---and for those countries seeking nuclear weapons who harbor sinister thoughts in the hope of eliminating their perceived grievousness by acts of destruction. We pray that Mary, the Queen of Peace, may shed her light to enkindle greater understanding among all nations in their hope of living without the fear of nuclear attack or retaliation. Each Thursday, from 9:00-9:15am I will invite our community to join me in prayer in our chapel, and also join me in a day of fasting for peace in our world —- and for life that is either denied or taken away from others (i.e., abortion and capital punishment). Gracious wonderful God, we thank you for the end of our nation’s war in Iraq and the ending war in Afghanistan. We ask you to continue to comfort those who suffer loss of life. Heal all the wounded and bless those who labor for a world without strife. Bless our soldiers and personnel in these war-torn countries that they may see the fruits of their labor. BOOKKEEPER NEEDED We regret to inform you that Bill Berkel has accepted a position with the City of Richmond and will be leaving our bookkeeping position at the end of this month. We wish Bill well in this new opportunity and are pleased that he will continue to manage our Facilities Committee as well as to log considerable volunteer hours at St. Ann. Of course, we will seek to fill this position as soon as possible to allow some time for Bill to train the candidate. Anyone interested should contact Jim Ayres or Fr.
