A Retirement Housing Foundation Publication
From The President
In the late ‘70’s, Retirement Housing Foundation started a publication
entitled The Vintage. Shown below is a reprint of the article from
the first Vintage edition suggesting the original name. Since then,
The Vintage has been published three or four times annually. The first
editor was Rev. Ernest M. Fowler. (Ernie later served as chaplain at
Bixby Knolls Towers and Healthcare Center. At age 96 he still attends
the RHF annual banquet and UCC meetings.)
Last year the board of directors and staff discussed the need for a name
change for several reasons, one of which is that we serve a diversity of
religions and also persons with no faith traditions. Hence, people may
not make the connection to RHF unless they actually read an article or
two. After considerable reflection and discussion, we decided that the
name for this publication should be RHF Today, which more readily
reflects this century and the contents of the publication.
Currently The Vintage, now RHF Today, is published three times a year and has a distribution of 24,000 copies. We
hope that you enjoy reading RHF Today. If you read each issue, it will keep you up to date on what’s happening at
Retirement Housing Foundation.
“THE VINTAGE” Title - Sign of Maturity, Achievement.
“We’d like to produce a ‘house organ’,” we said when planning the RHF public relations program over a year ago.
“Sounds great. Go ahead,” said the executive director. But other items got in the way. So we had to delay for a year.
“What shall we call it?,” we asked.
“The Grape Vine” was suggested, thinking about the religious significance of “I am the vine, you are the branches…,” word of
Jesus. But the Ohio Presbyterians and Episcopalians had already used the name. “Times Chronicle” was suggested.
Then “The Vintage” was born. It suggests the maturity of the harvest and the joy expressed in some countries when the new wine
is pressed. It also suggests the words of Jesus, “He who abides in me and I in him, he it is who bears much fruit….” John 15:5.
So RHF and the residents of RHF facilities will live together and work together in the spirit of Christ to produce the fruits
characterized by maturity and love.
Mayor Bradley of Los Angeles expressed something of the sort at the groundbreaking for Angelus Plaza. He said that he hoped
Angelus Plaza would become a center and symbol of renewal for the whole inner city area, providing an opportunity for a richer,
more hopeful lifestyle for everyone.
It is our hope that “The Vintage” will be a symbol of the commitment and centrality of Retirement Housing Foundation in the retirement
housing industry. In the Christian spirit of love, but without religious bias, we will try to produce “good fruit.”
From the first Vintage, printed in 1979.
RHF Today is published periodically for residents, families of residents, the United Church of Christ and sponsoring
congregations, staff, local board members, and friends of Retirement Housing Foundation, 911 N. Studebaker Road, Long Beach,
Remembering Our Roots
Remembering
Our Roots
(Excerpts from an article written by Dr. Joseph
for publication in the Diakonie - a newsletter for the
Council for Health and Human Service Ministries -
United Church of Christ.)
Between May 18th and 27th, I and five other
members of CHHSM (Council for Health and
Human Service Ministries related to the United Church of Christ) were
invited to meet with religious, educational, and political leaders in
Berlin, Bielefeld, Bethel, Bremen, Dusseldorf, Kaiserswerth, Westfalia,
and Brussels.
This was my sixth visit to Germany, but I had not previously visited
the birthplace of the Diakonie ministries. Throughout the trip, and
especially in Bielefeld, Bethel, Kaiserswerth, and Bremen, I felt I’d
come home.
My Years As Pastor of Peace Memorial Church
Between 1965 and 1987, I served Peace Memorial Church in Chicago (PMC), which was a
congregation founded by German immigrants in 1886, previously called the Evangelifchen
Friedens Gemeinde. During the first decade of my service, German worship services
and sermons were conducted twice a month by Dr. Rudolph Schade.
For many years, the church had a deaconess on staff, the last one being Sister Adele
Hosto, aunt of Reinhold and Richard Niebuhr. She had retired before I became senior
pastor, but I visited with her in her retirement residence and heard about the work she
did, much like a parish nurse today. I also had the opportunity to visit the sisters at
Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis. PMC had not only started a skilled nursing facility,
but was also involved in the founding of Evangelical Hospital, the first hospital in the
Evangelical Health System, now Advocate, as well as the Bensenville Home Society,
now Lifelink, both related to the United Church or Christ. Advocate has grown to become
the largest provider of health care in the metropolitan Chicago area.
We expanded the Peace Memorial ministries to include additional housing
and home healthcare during my ministry. I was aware that all of these
services had their roots in the Deaconess movement.
The motivation of the founders of these ministries was “The love of
Christ compels us.” Consequently, intellectually and emotionally for me
this was going back to our foundational roots.
A Sense of History
I found it especially meaningful to be part of the
worship service at Bethel and receive communion
on Ascension Day, May 21st, a holiday in Germany.
My sense of history was increased as we visited the
cemeteries after the service where we saw the
graves of hundreds of deaconesses from this and
previous centuries.
On most days our hosts set an ambitious pace
for us. We visited all kinds of services: skilled
nursing units; hospitals; homes for the elderly,
children, teens with behavioral or developmental
problems.
We met with educators and political leaders and
representatives of the German Protestant Church
as well as the Diakonie Ministries and Euro
Diakonie in Brussels.
In Kaiserswerth we stayed at the Diakonie
Mutterhaus, of Florence Nightingale fame, now
converted to a hotel.
The Church’s Role
Just as the cathedrals and churches are very prominent on the city
and village skylines, so the church in Germany has a tremendous
role in the full spectrum of health and human services. Citizens
indicate whether they are Protestant or Roman Catholic and the state
collects a 9% tax, which is then given to the respective churches to
pay for the services that people require.
Germany is facing the same problems that the USA and many countries
are facing with the aging demographic, in that there are fewer persons
to pay the tax to care for more and more people who need the service.
Of special interest to me was the fact that in the USA we seem to be discussing
more of a European model of healthcare, and one of our hosts mentioned that,
for several reasons, Germany is considering moving to more of a free enterprise
healthcare similar to the USA.
It caused me to wonder if anything is workable given the demographics and
high costs of health care.
The Kirchentag
Another high point of the visit was going to the Kirchentag in Bremen, the
biggest meeting of the Protestant Church in Europe. The meeting is
held every two years in a different city.
The Sunday morning closing worship service was held in the outdoor
plaza by the railroad station and was attended by 100,000 persons.
It was like the closing ceremony of religious Olympics. With German
precision, the entire congregation received communion in about 15 minutes.
Throughout, I was impressed with the wonderful spirit in all of the cities,
on trains, in hotels, everywhere. This was further underscored for me after
the closing worship service when we were routed through a long
tunnel of wall-to-wall people and someone started
singing, and soon there was a three-part round in
harmony echoing through the crowd.
A Wonderful Experience
For me this visit was a wonderful religious and
historical experience, which reminded me of our
call to health and human service ministries and
my personal roots deep in Diakonie.
In these times and always, we need to remember
our roots and why we do what we do. Thank
you for supporting this great work in so many
different ways.
Community Dedications
Celebrating New
Beginnings
RHF is growing and these past three months saw
celebrations of new communities in three different states.
All three communities were built with funding from
the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s
(HUD) 202 program.
These communities are specifically designed for older adults
over the age of 62, meeting HUD-set income limitations and
only paying 30% of their adjusted monthly income for rent.
RHF’s Second Community in San Antonio,TX
In June, RHF dedicated Bexton Place, our second community in the
city of San Antonio and our twelfth community in the state of
Texas. Bexton Place is a three-story, 55 one-bedroom
unit building with five units specifically designed to
benefit the mobility-impaired and those who are hearing
and/or visually impaired.
RHF Foundation, Inc. also provided funding towards
the building of this community.
A Dream Comes True
It was the dream of Rev. Eugene Shields and Pagedale
(MO) Mayor Mary Carter to have affordable housing
for the seniors in their community.
After trying for a number of years to navigate
through the funding system, they approached
Richard Washington (RHF’s Vice President of Business
Development) and asked RHF to help them make their dream a reality.
On July 15th RHF and the entire St. Louis area (or so it seemed)
celebrated the opening of Mount Beulah Terrace - a 39 one-bedroom unit
building with three of those units specifically designed to benefit the
mobility impaired and those who are hearing and/or visually impaired.
The St. Louis County Planning Office of Community Development also
provided funding for this community.
community has 79 one-bedroom units with
eight of those units designed to benefit
the mobility impaired and the building is
equipped for those who are hearing and/or
visually impaired.
The Colorado Department of Local Affairs
A Summer Evening With A Purpose
Gold Country Retirement Community - Placerville, California
Gold Country Retirement Community hosts a free concert every
summer for its residents and the surrounding community. Their
park-like grounds with shade trees makes for a perfect spot to
enjoy a picnic dinner, great weather, good friends and wonderful
music, presented by the Fred Morgan Big Band.
This year the residents decided to use the venue to help a local
organization that is facing severe budget cuts, the El Dorado
County Senior Day Care Program.
This nonprofit provides needed services in the
form of day programs and activities for seniors,
throughout the county, who are coping with
dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Three local businesses offered to match all
donations received from those attending.
More than $950 was presented to Wanda
Demarest, the manager of Senior Day Care.
Pioneer House hosted Cub Scouts (representing a number
of troops) from the River City District in the Golden
Empire Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Scouts
raced cars that they had made themselves within specific
guidelines to insure an even playing field.
Approximately 30 scouts participated in the event. Residents
from Pioneer House watched, perhaps remembering
when they participated in such an event themselves.
A Note From Home
Granada Gardens - Granada Hills, California
Some Granada Gardens residents took part in Operation Interdependence
(sponsored by Valley Outreach Synagogue) and bagged goodies for our
military stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Community residents donated such items as wet wipes, toothbrushes,
candy, individual powdered drinks, razors, socks, gum, etc. They packed
20 cartons that will be distributed to 1000 service members.
However, the most important items in these bags are letters from the community. These letters let our
servicemen and women know how grateful we are here, in the United States, for their service to our country.
Neighborhood Networks
Pilgrim Place - Mason City, Iowa
Community News
Bringing technology to our residents is a daunting task when you
don’t have the funds, the equipment, or the technology. In general,
for seniors its a scary proposition. Not having the expertise to get
it up and running can be a roadblock that makes this effort even
more challenging.
Pilgrim Place had two donated computers but they didn’t know
what to do with them.
And then Craig Conway moved into the community in August of 2007. One day he inquired about the
computers upstairs in the library, and was told about the problems of finding an operating system/programs
for the computers. As he was determining that the computers were too old to do much of anything with,
Pilgrim Place’s Service Coordinator, Barbara Kleven, learned that an area hospital had computers to donate to
local nonprofit organizations.
Craig picked up two computers at the hospital, took them to a computer person that he knew and they
helped set up the computers with the needed operating system. He brought the computers home and installed
several programs on each one.
He then put one computer in the community room and the other in the second floor library. With a donation of
internet access, the computer in the community room can now be used by the residents for surfing the web and
e-mailing family and friends. The one in the library cannot receive a signal, but can be used to play games, etc.
Another resident bought a computer desk for the community room and Pilgrim Place’s maintenance man was
able to put together a makeshift desk for the computer in the library.
Knowing that having access to a computer is just one step, Craig then conducted classes on how to use the
computer - with a significant number of residents attending. Residents can be found using both computers on
a regular basis.
On their Wish List now - a printer.
A Wall To Remember
Round House Manor - Kaukauna, Wisconsin
Like many families with relatives serving in the military, not a day
goes by that Wendi Butkovich doesn’t think about her nephew
currently stationed in Iraq.
As a project for Memorial Day, Jeff Carriveau (maintenance staff
at Round House) suggested creating a display where staff and
residents could honor loved ones who have served their country in
the military throughout the years.
By the time the project was finished, more than 100 red, white, and blue stars - displaying the names of residents
and family members adorn a large wall in the lobby of the community.
Resident Betty Janssen added five stars to the wall in honor of her two brothers, son-in-law, granddaughter
and granddaughter’s fiance.
“You hear so many stories, but now it’s personal,” Butkovich stated as she glanced at the names displayed
on the wall. “You can see the names up there. Some of them wrote deceased, killed in action. It just brings it
closer to home. We remember.”
2009 Advocacy
1)
Giving Our Residents A Voice
A national organization like RHF doesn’t grow to the size it is by accident
- strategic planning plays a major role in determining the path it is going
to take over the years.
Like most strategic plans, RHF has basic goals that its National Board
of Directors and key members of its staff determine to be important to
focus on when conducting business and determining projects.
Advocacy is one of those goals.
2)
Our Role As Advocates
An organization’s voice, even the size of RHF, has a hard time being heard.
So we work with other nonprofits - through the American Association of
Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) and their state affiliates - to
ensure that our message gets to policy makers at every level of government.
We advocate for our mission - affordable housing for older adults, low-income
families, and people with disabilities - at the local, state and national level.
We advocate for our residents - for the programs and policies which they
need to maintain a quality lifestyle.
In recent years we have begun encouraging our residents to become
advocates, too. It has become very evident that their needs will only be
considered if their voices are loud, constant, and in unison.
So we work hard to educate residents on the issues and let them
know when their voices need to be heard. With so many important
issues facing our nation, the need to voice their opinions to their
elected representatives has never been greater or more urgent.
3)
4)
Another Excuse For A Party
The good news is that a lot of our residents have used their advocacy
efforts as another excuse to get together and have a party!
Whether it is getting together
to call their representatives in
Washington, D.C. or inviting
them to their communities to
discuss the issues, RHF residents
are vocal about what they see
as important issues that need to
be addressed.
2009 Advocacy
Taking The Lead
And by all accounts, they are a force to be reckoned with.
AAHSA has stated, on more than one occasion, that RHF
and its residents have led their national efforts on
advocating issues like the need for affordable housing,
making sure that long-term and home-based care is
included in any healthcare reform, and the need to keep
supporting important programs in the national budget
that impact their lives.
The need has never been greater. Our residents will continue to
let their concerns be known at all levels of government.
Project H.A.N.D.S.
Winning Awards and
Friends Throughout
the Country
Each RHF community is unique - reflecting the personality of its
residents and the larger communities in which they are located.
The Project H.A.N.D.S. ® (Helping Angels National Donated Support) groups that are active in 75 RHF
communities are no different - the organizations they work with and the items they create and donate reflect
each group’s talents and interests. In 2008, more than 1,200 RHF residents contributed 99,392 hours and created
over 12,400 items for those in need.
One such RHF community is Lakeview Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa - a small community of 10,000 people. This
25-unit apartment building may not be very large by some standards but their H.A.N.D.S. group - nicknamed
the Crafty Handed Grannies - is making a big impact on people living in northeast Iowa.
First - they reach out to church and civic organizations to get the necessary supplies they need to create their
items. Then they identify groups that have a need for what they create.
Whether it is providing pillows and blankets for children in the local Head Start program or knitting items to
donate to the Council Against Domestic Abuse or Family Steps (a teen mom program), this group has consistently
been recognized for their efforts on behalf of their community.
Their most recent award - the 2008 Outstanding Community Partner - was from Upper Des Moines Opportunity,
a group that recognizes exceptional volunteer programs in the community.
Partnering with our UCC Friends
It started off as a challenge in the Southern California - Nevada Conference
of the United Church of Christ newsletter - Can we make 500 school kits
to distribute to children and bring them to the June Conference Gathering?
®
Project H.A.N.D.S. groups from six different RHF communities (La
Mirada Vistas - La Mirada, CA; West Valley Towers - Van Nuys, CA;
Crescent Manor and Mesquite Gardens - Mesquite, TX; The Concord -
Pasadena, CA; and, St. Mary Tower - Long Beach, CA) decided they could
sew the 500 bags needed to put the supplies in that were gathered at
various UCC churches.
While the required dimensions for the bags were precise,
the groups’ creativity showed in the material picked to
make the bags - residents for The Concord even included
pencils in the bags they made!
Special thanks to Judy Shaw, Service Coordinator Manager,
for coordinating this effort.
Interim Conference Minister, Jane Fisler Hoffman wrote,
“I want to note special appreciation to the staff and sewers
from the Retirement Housing Foundation . . . What a
terrific partnership among local churches, a Conference, a UCC Health and Human
Service agency and an ecumenical global ministry organization!!! .”
Celebrating Life
There is a lot of discussion about the baby boomers beginning to
reach retirement age.
Not as much is said about the fastest growing segment in America’s
population - people over the age of 100.
While advances in medicine are given a lot of credit for this
phenomenon, ask anyone who has reached the ripe old age of 100
what the key to seeing the century mark is and you will get as many
different answers as the number of individuals you ask.
At last count, RHF communities had more than 65 Centenarians - the vast
majority of them living in independent communities - with relatively little
assistance from caregivers. We celebrate their lives and thank them for the
contributions they have made during a lifetime that has seen the best of
times and the worst of times.
The Gateway Cornerstone Village - Houston, Texas
Mae Dressman turned 100 this year - she celebrated with her
The Carolinian family and friends at Cornerstone Gardens, where she has lived
for the last five years.
The Gateway - Poway, California
On August 4th, The Gateway had the honor of celebrating two
remarkable birthdays. Grace Heller’s 101st and Libby Silverstein’s
100th! Family, friends, residents, and staff all attended.
There were tender speeches from family members, toasts from
residents and staff, great food, and resident Vivian Harrington
provided background music. They are two remarkable women
and we are thrilled to have them as our residents.
The Carolinian - Florence, South Carolina
A celebration was held on June 10th, celebrating the lives of Carolinian residents
who are 100 years or older. Alberta Woods, 102; Vera Butler, 101; and, Thelma
Calley, 100 were honored. Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela and Dr. Charles
Grooms were among those attending.
Anicelia Cuza
Trinidad Ventura
Angelus Plaza - Los Angeles, California
Ms. Cuza was born in Guantánamo, Cuba on June 18, 1907. In 1981, she moved to
Angelus Plaza. Anicelia has one daughter. She loves to cook and walk.
Trinidad Ventura was born in the Philippine Islands on June 24, 1909. She has
resided at Angelus Plaza for 15 years. Trinidad has 29 grandchildren and 8
great-grandchildren. Ms. Ventura says, “I’m proud of my age, I never hide
it.”
Mayflower Gardens - Lancaster, California
Ruth Marshall (not pictured), a resident at Mayflower Gardens since 1992,
celebrated her 102nd birthday with her friends at the monthly resident’s meeting
on June 3.
You Can Give a Gift Annuity
You probably know how a charitable gift annuity works. You donate a specific amount of money and in return
you receive a fixed number of dollars every year for the rest of your life at an attractive interest rate (see inside
back cover for more details.) The arrangement benefits you in several ways, including tax relief. RHF receives a
benefit because we ultimately obtain funds to help us carry out our mission.
Gift annuities help both the donor and their favorite nonprofit organization. Some folks like them so well they
obtain a new one every year. But did you know you can create a gift annuity for someone else? For example,
let’s say your mother is 86 years old and lives on a fixed income. She could use some extra money. So you
donate $20,000 to establish a gift annuity naming your mother as the annuitant.
According to our current rates, she would receive guaranteed payments of $138 every month (or $415 each quarter)
for the remainder of her life, you would be entitled to a charitable tax deduction of over $11,000; and RHF (or an
RHF community) would receive the remaining principal of this thoughtful and generous planned gift.
Or, consider this scenario: You have two adult children and you want to supplement their retirement programs.
So you establish a deferred payment gift annuity for each of them. At the outset, when you provide the initial
funds, you determine when the payments to your children will begin. It could be at age 65, or perhaps later.
Again, the benefits are considerable - for you, your children and for the RHF mission.
Can you give a gift annuity to a non-family member? Yes indeed. In fact, some donors use these gift arrangements
to benefit a treasured friend, a longtime employee, a revered teacher or someone else they want to assist. Gift
annuities can help just about anyone! And all the while, RHF also receives a blessing.
Paula Jameson, CFRE would like to chat with you about our gift annuity program and how these gift instruments
can benefit you and the special people in your life. She has some free literature for you. You can reach her at
562-257-5141. You can also contact her through our Web site at www.rhf.org. Please take a moment now and let
Ms. Jameson hear from you.
Note: Our Charitable Gift Annuity program is administered and guaranteed through United Church Foundation (UCC).
RHF Circle of Friends
The RHF Circle of Friends is our legacy society. There are many ways to qualify for membership, such as RHF
gift annuities that provide lifetime income to the donor, life insurance, real estate gifts, charitable remainder
trusts, and gifts from pension fund assets and/or simply including RHF in your Will or Trust. For more information
in confidence and without obligation, contact Paula Jameson, CFRE, at (562) 257-5141.
