Enrollment growth is the future for St. Cecilia Academy St. Cecilia Academy welcomed the Class of 2013 in August. The student body now surpasses the 260 - student mark this year. The admissions office continued to be one of the busiest spots on campus this last winter and spring as it worked through 154 applications. A total of 110 girls were interviewed and 77 students make up the freshman class, signifying another year of significant growth for the Academy. The incoming class comes from 26 different schools with the top feeder schools, in order, being: St. Henry, Overbrook, local public schools, St. Bernard Academy, St. Matthew, Christ the King and St. Joseph. SCA will also welcome its first incoming freshman from Davidson County’s KIPP Academy, a public charter school in East Nashville. The diversity seen by the admissions office is the result of a comprehensive 235 228 228 236 266 2005-06 2006-07 2007-08 2008-09 2009-10 plan to spread the message about what a unique place St. Cecilia Academy is for girls in Nashville. Action in the admissions office continued this fall with one of our most successful open houses and packed eighth-grade visit days. Applications are already coming in for the 2010-11 school year. St. Cecilia Academy faculty members helped the admissions office on many levels. Teachers conducted one-on-one interviews with applicants along with PROJECTED 291 300 2010-11 2011 - 12 Principal Sister Mary Thomas, O.P. and Admissions Director Betty Bader. “I can’t say enough about what a difference it makes when the entire school community is involved with the admissions process,” Mrs. Bader said. “The perspective families can really feel what it is like to be a part of this school and this environment.” All these numbers add up to an enrollment jump from 238 students during the 2008-2009 school year to 266 students enrolled for the 2009-2010 school year. • Looking back on 20 years of service Sister Mary Thomas, O.P., recognized from left, Mrs. Susie Schultheiss, Mr. Francis Horn, and Mrs. Jean Stacey — three beloved members of the faculty and staff — for their 20 years of service to St. Cecilia Academy. 10 HARPSTRINGS www.stcecilia.edu
Choir spreads the spirit of St. Cecilia through Canada By Meaghan Connolly, '07 Even though school let out for the summer in May, it was business as usual for the St. Cecilia choir until mid June. Choir Director Jeanette MacCallum and 26 members of the choir were invited to perform in Montreal and Québec City, Canada. The choir submitted a demo CD to several venues and was chosen by L’Oratoire Saint-Joseph du Mont Royal, the Basilica of Notre-Dame, the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and L'Église Saint-Charles-Garnier. While in Montreal and Québec City, the choir was able to explore the two cities. The group especially enjoyed a trip to the Biodome de Montreal, an indoor re-creation of five different ecosystems, and a Nighttime Ghost Tour. The girls, of course, did some shopping. Emily Frederickson, ‘08, a former member of the St. Cecilia choir, was one of four chaperones on the trip. Frederickson will be a sophomore this coming year at Birmingham Southern, where she participates in a selective concert choir ensemble. Jeanette MacCallum has previously arranged for the St. Cecilia choir to take performance trips. She prefers to offer trips every several years, instead of consecutively, so the girls can work toward that goal. MacCallum would like to venture to the Northwest, particularly Seattle or British Columbia, for future choir trips. MacCallum considers the choir trips an excellent way to expose her students to new experiences and provide them with unique opportunities. “I like to go where the best opportunities are,” she says. The St. Cecilia Choir stands in front of Quebec's National Assembly's Provincial Parliament Building in Quebec City during its tour of Canada this summer. Canada is an especially unique opportunity because the country is home to several renowned composers and is receptive to traveling choirs. This year, MacCallum expects the St. Cecilia choir to draw in roughly 70 members. And with numbers like those, opportunities will surely be abundant. • ANNUAL REPORT LOOKING BACK ON A HISTORIC ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN 2008-2009 Dear family, friends and alumnae at St. Cecilia Academy, Thank you to all of the committed and generous benefactors listed on the following pages. You have helped us set new fundraising records this year! We were blessed once again to have an amazing group of parents serve on the 2008-2009 volunteer committee. David and Arlene Johnson served as overall chairs. Their enthusiasm and leadership inspired all of us. As of June 30, we had received $325,000 in gifts which represents 93% of our goal. Considering the economic conditions that prevailed last year, we are very thankful for this achievement. On behalf of Sister Mary Thomas and all of the faculty and staff, thank you for making an impact on St. Cecilia Academy. New records set: 90% overall parent participation Sophomore Class achieved 100% participation Freshman Class achieved 96% participation Alumnae giving up 50% this year Ten special reunion groups celebrated Reunion Giving Appeal was a great success Nearly 100 first time donors Once again this year: 100% faculty and staff participation 100% volunteer committee participation Awesome volunteers Great turnout at the Alumnae Luncheon Successful Alumnae Phonathon To SCA alumnae, thank you for your support and active participation. It was great to meet so many more alumnae at the annual alumnae luncheon and special reunion gatherings. We are thrilled to report that the alumnae annual fund participation is up by 50% this year. Thank you to all of the class agents that helped us by their own example of financial support for SCA. The response to the Reunion Giving Appeal to make a gift toward financial assistance was awesome.
