Liz Dedman stands during graduation to be recognized for being named the Davidson County Mock Trial Best Prosecution Attorney 2009. Liz will be attending the University of Richmond. The Class of 2009 looks forward to the next adventure “We know that we are loved here.” — Valedictorian Ragan Todd • The Class of 2009, whose members were accepted to 115 colleges in 30 states, is attending colleges in 14 different states. The Class of 2009 earned approximately $4.6 million dollars in college scholarships, with a total of 76% of the graduates receiving a college scholarship. • Some of the colleges and universities the class was accepted to include: Boston College, Vanderbilt University, University of Notre Dame, Claremont McKenna College, New York University, Pitzer College, University of Richmond, Vassar College, Villanova University and many others. This is the first year UT has accepted freshmen into the nursing program and Julia was among the 48 out of 500 applicants who were accepted. • Graduate Liz Dedman, now a freshman at the University of Richmond, was named Davidson County Mock Trial Best Prosecution Attorney 2009. Dual enrollment means students can look forward to college credit while still in high school By Meaghan Connolly, ’07 Beginning this fall, Aquinas College will be expanding its high school dual enrollment program. Junior and senior St. Cecilia Academy students will be able to enroll in and receive credit for select college courses without leaving the building. The credit they receive through Aquinas will follow each student to her future college or university of choice. Sister Thomas More, O.P., the vice president of academics at Aquinas College, said the courses for which students may receive credit from Aquinas do not have to be Advanced Placement courses, though they must meet certain requirements. Each high school course a student seeks credit for must be of college caliber and follow a syllabus similar to the corresponding Aquinas course. High school instructors for the courses must also meet certain Aquinas requirements, since they will be considered part-time professors. If students choose to enroll dually in a course at Aquinas, the price for the college course they would normally pay as college students will be reduced by 50%. A dual enrollment grant will also be available through the state, which is $100 per credit hour per semester. This semester nine students are taking Advanced Placement Biology and will be dually enrolled. The AP Biology course will be taught by Dr. Karen Deal, who has received her Ph.D. in pharmacology and her M.D. from Vanderbilt University. It will serve as a pilot course for future expansion of the dual enrollment program at St. Cecilia. To meet requirements set by Aquinas College, St. Cecilia’s AP Biology course will include a final examination in May, in addition to the Advanced Placement exam. Sister Mary Thomas, O.P., principal of St. Cecilia Academy, said the dual enrollment program at Aquinas is an excellent opportunity for students to gain an advantage over future college counterparts by receiving college credit while still in high school. Furthermore, she says, students who are dually enrolled in an AP course are at an even higher advantage, as they have the possibility of receiving college credit from Aquinas as well as college credit based off their AP test scores. Sister expects the demand for courses offered through the program to increase as St. Cecilia’s enrollment also increases. More students at St. Cecilia will increase the number of Advanced Placement courses offered as well as the number of courses for which students may receive credit at Aquinas. • www.stcecilia.edu HARPSTRINGS 9
