Remembering Sister Mary David, O.P. • Record number of alumnae gather at annual luncheon

Letter from Sister
St. Cecilia Academy Principal Sister Mary Thomas, O.P., at the 148th St. Cecilia Academy commencement ceremony in May.
August 2009
Dear Alumnae, Friends, and Families,
These words are etched on glass panels beside doors
leading into the Heritage Room at the St. Cecilia
Motherhouse:
“A glorious history to remember
and to recount, a great history
still to be accomplished.”
— Pope John Paul II
post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Vita Consecrata
How fitting that phrase captures the spirit of St. Cecilia
Academy at this time in her history. This edition of
HarpStrings uses the theme of “looking back, looking
forward” to capture the richness of our 150-year tradition and
the vibrancy of its experience as we look to the future.
Looking back through the many chapters of St. Cecilia’s
history was a favorite theme during our Alumnae Weekend
June 12th - 13th. Record numbers came to the luncheon on
Saturday, and ten classes gathered on and off campus at other
times during the weekend to enjoy memories and friendships
forged long ago in the halls of St. Cecilia. As I gave a tour to a
group of 1984 alumnae and listened to their stories, I realized
that some things never change about St. Cecilia girls (for
which I am grateful!) and many of the traditions live on in
the halls of St. Cecilia today.
‘Living on’ is a great way to describe our on-going experience
at St. Cecilia today. As we look forward to beginning our
150th year of educating young women, we see many new
exciting chapters ahead. We have welcomed 82 new families
to the school in the fall to help write the chapter of the
2009-10 school year. We have opened with a ribbon cutting
ceremony on a new soccer field and track. We also expanded
our dual enrollment program with Aquinas College to allow
students to earn credit at Aquinas College for selected courses
taken at St. Cecilia Academy. The school year will culminate
with the kick-off of our 150th celebration at the May
Crowning.
Looking back and looking forward: both give glorious views
of the Cecilian tradition. One view is 150 years old and filled
with great events to be remembered. The other view has
untold chapters, filled with the potential of the thousands of
young women yet to add their story to the pages of St.
Cecilia’s history. I am proud to help write a few of these lines.
Blessings for this school year,
Coach Emily Marcoullier talks to the soccer team during half time of the first game.
Playing on new home field, the Scarab
soccer team performs tenaciously
Scarab spirit soared high this fall with a
new $1.5 million track and soccer field
and an incredible winning soccer season
to go along with it.
At the end of the season, the SCA soccer
team held an overall record of 13-1-3 and
clinched the TSSAA District I title. The
team won its home quarterfinals game and
ended the season fourth in the region.
The team began home play on Sept. 10
following a ribbon cutting ceremony
for the new track and soccer field, which
is shared by SCA and Overbrook School.
The new athletic field features a
regulation size soccer field with lighting,
an eight-lane rubberized track, dual high
jump and long jump areas as well as
areas for shot put and discus.
“It feels so much better, the ball moves
so smoothly across the grass,” said
Roxana Pita-Romero, a junior on the
soccer team. “It feels like home.”
“It’s really motivating to be playing on the
new field,” adds junior Natalie Goodrum,
who scored the very first goal on the new
soccer field. “It really pumps us up before
our games. It’s a great accessory to our
season so far.”
St. Cecilia Athletic Director Jerry
Landers said the new facility gives
the St. Cecilia athletic teams greater
“flexibility in scheduling” practices and
events, and is giving the entire school
community “a sense of pride about
having a first class facility.”
SCA junior Roxana Pita-Romero protects the ball on home field during a game this season.
“Being on the new field has been
awesome,” said SCA soccer Coach
Emily Marcouiller. “The girls get so
excited about playing on it. They have a
lot of pride and determination once they
step out on the field and they play with
all their heart and soul and leave it all
out on the field. That says a lot about
their character.”
While the girls love playing on the
new field and have enjoyed their new
home field advantage, they know this
is just the beginning of what the entire
facility will be. In Phase II of the
project, a 3,700 square foot field house
will be built that will provide home
and visitor locker rooms, concessions,
spectator restrooms, a first aid area
and storage space. Work continues to
be done to raise funds for bleachers
and a scoreboard.
This soccer season is also just the
beginning of successful seasons to
come with the young team. There are
Sophomore Olivia Glascoe defends the Scarab goal during a game.
only three seniors on the team this year
and a strong starting line-up from the
junior and sophomore classes.
“The girls want to get better and they
put a lot of hard work in day after day
at practice and by that, they continue
to improve game after game,” Coach
Marcouiller said. “I do hold them to
a high standard and they constantly
challenge themselves to get better to
meet the challenge given.” •
SCA adds bowling and lacrosse
By Athletic Director Jerry Landers
St. Cecilia Academy will be adding two
sports to its Scarab lineup this year.
During the winter season, we will be
bringing back bowling. Bowling is a TSSAA
sanctioned sport and will broaden student
involvement in the athletic program.
Bowling has grown as a TSSAA sport
and it concludes the year with state
championship competition. The team
will be comprised of at least six
participants and competition is scratch
scoring with no handicapping.
St. Cecilia will also be adding lacrosse
as a spring sport. Lacrosse is not currently
sanctioned as a TSSAA sport, but
like swimming it is a club sport with a
number of high schools adding it
each year. We will be building our
program this year to get ready for the
club status. For the 2009-2010 year,
we will make lacrosse an intramural
sport to draw interest and develop
skill level. We believe that these
sports will add excitement and be
successful parts of our overall athletic
program. •
Financial aid makes SCA
possible for many students
St. Cecilia Academy freshman Lane
Vaughn likes to paint and write stories
and was just cast in the SCA fall musical,
The Wizard of Oz. Sophomore Alex Wall is
now performing with the SCA chamber
ensemble and spreading her wings this
year trying out new golf clubs.
St. Cecilia Academy continues to
fundraise to cover the cost of bringing
more students like Alex and Lane into
its family. Since last year, St. Cecilia
Academy saw an increase in requests
for financial assistance and the
Academy is endeavoring to make sure it
can meet those requests. Financial
assistance provided for SCA families
went from $450,000 in 2008-09 to more
than $618,000 this fall. That’s an increase
of 37% in one year.
Both Lane and Alex are recipients of
the St. Cecilia Academy Principal’s
Scholarship - an award for students
with financial need and high academic
potential. In addition to that
scholarship, SCA offers 16 scholarships
and tuition assistance opportunities.
Another new endowed scholarship was
created in 2009 by the Bodell family.
The Harris Scholarship provides tuition
assistance up to $5,000 per year to an
incoming freshman from Christ the
King Parish School with identified need.
Mrs. Kristy Vaughn, Lane’s mother, said
receiving financial assistance via the
Principal’s Scholarship for her daughter
made the difference in being able to
afford St. Cecilia Academy.
“Without this help, it would be nearly
impossible for us to have provided such
a tremendous opportunity for our girls to
grow and shine,” Mrs. Vaughn said.
“SCA is a special place that brings out
the best in young ladies, socially,
academically and spiritually. It is such an
empowering environment for our girls.”
“As the student population has grown,
2008 and 2009 Principal Scholarship recipients Lane Vaughn and Alex Wall stand in front of the St.
Cecilia Congregation Motherhouse, which was originally the site of St. Cecilia Academy before the school
moved to The Dominican Campus on Harding Road in 1957. They represent the future of SCA.
so too has the defined need for financial
aid,” said Principal Sr. Mary Thomas,
O.P. “It is a continuing prayer to have
additional funds available for those who
are in need, especially in these economic
times.”
Ms. Andrea Wall, Alex’s mother, said
she prayed for her daughter to make the
decision to go to St. Cecilia Academy
even though it would be a strain on her
finances as a single parent.
“When we were notified that Alex was
one of the recipients of the Principal’s
Scholarship, she and I both broke
down in tears,” Mrs. Wall said.
Financial aid kept Ms. Wall from
having to add extra jobs to her
schedule.
“Endowed Scholarships and gifts of
direct financial assistance have
traditionally come to SCA from a
faithful group of alumnae, supportive
parents and friends. This type of
contribution is the spirit of St. Cecilia
Academy at its best,” said Sister
Catherine Marie, O.P., executive director
of The Dominican Campus. •
The power of one
Reflections on Sister Mary David, O.P.
This fall, St. Cecilia Academy said goodbye
to a dear friend. Sr. Mary David
Harlow, a Dominican sister of 72 years,
died peacefully at St. Cecilia Motherhouse
on Sept. 15, 2009.
Sister taught for 58 years, 21 of them at SCA.
She first taught at the Academy while it was
still at the Motherhouse. She then helped
move the Academy to 4210 Harding Road,
teaching there from 1957 - 1964. During that
crucial time in the history of the school, she
taught English, directed the first play on the
stage in the gym, and wrote the historical
play that would serve as a central part of the
centennial celebration in 1960. In her spare
time she coached the basketball team. As
head coach, she led the efforts to research
and name a mascot for the Academy, the one
and only SCArab. She later returned to St.
Cecilia in 1985, teaching freshmen English
until she retired in 1998.
Sr. Mary David taught generations of
people and was greatly loved for her
personal warmth and her devotion: to God
and her “dear ones” as well as to all things
literary. Sisters and students alike were
inspired by her. Frances Anne Varallo, SCA
’63, thought of her as a mentor and said
that Sister was responsible for the fact that
she went into theatre in college and from
there into a television career spanning over
thirty years. She noted, “Sister Mary David
had an undying love for the theatre and all
things related.” Frances Anne kept in
contact with her mentor long past
graduation and found great strength in that
relationship.

Sister Marian, O.P., secretary general of the
St. Cecilia Congregation, and a postulant talk to
Sister Mary David, O.P., at the Motherhouse.
Upon retirement from SCA, Sister filled
her days with tutoring English students,
mentoring young student teachers,
and even taking on a self-appointed
position of “snoopervisor” of the
Motherhouse kitchen and laundry. She
retained her love for SCA, attending plays
occasionally. The last play she attended
was Little Women in the spring of 2006.
During intermission she went into the
green room to encourage the cast. As they
surrounded her, she exclaimed, “Heaven
just fell into my lap.” Even as her memory
for details waned, she would always greet
those sisters at the academy with the ready
question of “How are the girls at SCA?” •
— By Sister Mary Thomas, O.P.
I drift off into sleep, let my mind cross in memory, prayers and dreams
I still see her glass beaded chains sway as she purposefully, swiftly makes her way down the tiled hallway;
I hear their “chink- chink- chinking” softly and I feel calm, I see light bounce and colors glisten as she passes
Watch her uneven gait as she orients to the far left of the black board: She begins a grammar lesson
Cursive- first with her left hand, seemlessly transitions chalk to her right,
Finishing only to start over with her left
She calls out someone’s name without looking
Sister compliments, redirects, continues
I rest still
For Sister Mary David by Jennifer Bell
By SCA Alumna Jennifer Bell, ’92
In high school I weathered some very
severe storms … but God continued
to watch over me. He watched me
through Sister Mary David’s eyes.
I performed as an average, even less
than average student. Sister Mary
David looked through my performance.
She encouraged
me to write poetry,
write prose, write
fiction and nonfiction
and then
write even more!
She positioned a
wooden stool
close to her desk
and patted the
seat, motioning
me to my perch. Among her love for the
fine works of Emerson, St. Edna
Vincent Millay and Whitman was her
love of MY works!
Perched there, I shared my most
intimate musings with her... and my
soul. Sister Mary David looked at me
directly, mercifully, never letting her
ocean blue eyes stray from mine. She
watched. She listened. She really
heard me when I felt I had no voice.
Despite my raw vulnerability and fear
she proclaimed and approved, “Dear,
thank you for sharing your lovely
prayers with me.”
These memories are cemented
in my soul. I use the verb “cemented”
because her love grounded me for
many, many years before I could allow
myself to be grounded in Him. In
those few moments of her precious
time, Sister Mary David made me feel
like the most special young woman in
all the world! As a grown woman and
mother of two daughters, I appreciate
all the more how Sister loved me.
Isn’t it all parents’ hope for our
children to feel and believe these
truths? Isn’t it our Father in Heaven?!
I have learned we are all parents to
someone, whether we know it or not,
whether they know it or not. Sister
was a loving mother to me, to so
many girls.
I would like to perch upon her stool
and read once more to her from my
heart. •
Dual enrollment means students can look forward
to college credit while still in high school
By Meaghan Connolly, ’07
Beginning this fall, Aquinas College
will be expanding its high school dual
enrollment program. Junior and senior
St. Cecilia Academy students will be
able to enroll in and receive credit for
select college courses without leaving
the building. The credit they receive
through Aquinas will follow each
student to her future college or
university of choice.
Sister Thomas More, O.P., the vice
president of academics at Aquinas
College, said the courses for which
students may receive credit from Aquinas
do not have to be Advanced Placement
courses, though they must meet certain
requirements. Each high school course a
student seeks credit for must be of college
caliber and follow a syllabus similar to
the corresponding Aquinas course. High
school instructors for the courses must
also meet certain Aquinas requirements,
since they will be considered part-time
professors. If students choose to enroll
dually in a course at Aquinas, the price
for the college course they would normally
pay as college students will be reduced
by 50%. A dual enrollment grant will also
be available through the state, which is
$100 per credit hour per semester.
This semester nine students are taking
Advanced Placement Biology and will
be dually enrolled. The AP Biology
course will be taught by Dr. Karen Deal,
who has received her Ph.D. in
pharmacology and her M.D. from
Vanderbilt University. It will serve as a
pilot course for future expansion of the
dual enrollment program at St. Cecilia.
To meet requirements set by Aquinas
College, St. Cecilia’s AP Biology course will
include a final examination in May, in
addition to the Advanced Placement exam.
Sister Mary Thomas, O.P., principal of
St. Cecilia Academy, said the dual
enrollment program at Aquinas is an
excellent opportunity for students to gain
an advantage over future college
counterparts by receiving college credit
while still in high school. Furthermore,
she says, students who are dually enrolled
in an AP course are at an even higher
advantage, as they have the possibility of
receiving college credit from Aquinas as
well as college credit based off their AP
test scores. Sister expects the demand for
courses offered through the program to
increase as St. Cecilia’s enrollment also
increases. More students at St. Cecilia will
increase the number of Advanced
Placement courses offered as well as the
number of courses for which students
may receive credit at Aquinas. •
Enrollment growth is the future for St. Cecilia Academy
St. Cecilia Academy welcomed
the Class of 2013 in August.
The student body now surpasses
the 260 - student mark this year.
The admissions office continued to be
one of the busiest spots on campus this
last winter and spring as it worked
through 154 applications. A total of 110
Choir spreads the spirit of St. Cecilia through Canada
By Meaghan Connolly, '07
Even though school let out for the
summer in May, it was business as usual
for the St. Cecilia choir until mid June.
Choir Director Jeanette MacCallum and
26 members of the choir were invited to
perform in Montreal and Québec City,
Canada. The choir submitted a demo
CD to several venues and was chosen by
L’Oratoire Saint-Joseph du Mont Royal,
the Basilica of Notre-Dame, the Basilica
of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and L'Église
Saint-Charles-Garnier.
While in Montreal and Québec City,
the choir was able to explore the two
cities. The group especially enjoyed a
trip to the Biodome de Montreal, an
indoor re-creation of five different
ecosystems, and a Nighttime Ghost Tour.
The girls, of course, did some shopping.
Emily Frederickson, ‘08, a former
member of the St. Cecilia choir, was
one of four chaperones on the trip.
Frederickson will be a sophomore this
coming year at Birmingham Southern,
where she participates in a selective
concert choir ensemble.
Jeanette MacCallum has previously
arranged for the St. Cecilia choir to take
performance trips. She prefers to offer
trips every several years, instead of
consecutively, so the girls can work
toward that goal. MacCallum would like
to venture to the Northwest, particularly
Seattle or British Columbia, for future
choir trips.
MacCallum considers the choir trips an
excellent way to expose her students
to new experiences and provide them with
unique opportunities. “I like to go where
the best opportunities are,” she says.
The St. Cecilia Choir stands in front of Quebec's
National Assembly's Provincial Parliament
Building in Quebec City during its tour of
Canada this summer.
Canada is an especially unique
opportunity because the country is
home to several renowned composers
and is receptive to traveling choirs.
This year, MacCallum expects the St.
Cecilia choir to draw in roughly 70
members. And with numbers like
those, opportunities will surely be
abundant. •
LOOKING BACK ON A HISTORIC ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN
2008-2009
Dear family, friends and alumnae at St. Cecilia Academy,
Thank you to all of the committed and generous benefactors
listed on the following pages. You have helped us set new
fundraising records this year! We were blessed once again to
have an amazing group of parents serve on the 2008-2009
volunteer committee. David and Arlene Johnson served as
overall chairs. Their enthusiasm and leadership inspired all
of us. As of June 30, we had received $325,000 in gifts which
represents 93% of our goal. Considering the economic
conditions that prevailed last year, we are very thankful for
this achievement. On behalf of Sister Mary Thomas and all of
the faculty and staff, thank you for making an impact on St.
Cecilia Academy.
St. Cecilia Academy looks back to its beginnings
Beginning with this issue of HarpStrings,
St. Cecilia Academy will take a look back
at its history as the school prepares for its
sesquicentennial celebration. This
historical summary was taken from A
Short Sketch of the Foundation and Growth of
Saint Cecilia Congregation as recounted by
writings of Mother Frances Walsh, O.P.
Since its earliest days in 1860, St. Cecilia
Academy has educated young women
in an environment rooted in faith and
rich in excellence. That mission remains
the cornerstone of the Academy today.
The founding of St. Cecilia Academy
was simultaneous with the founding of
Tennessee’s only Motherhouse of
Dominican Sisters, the Congregation of
St. Cecilia of Nashville. At the request
of Bishop James Whelan, also a
Dominican, four sisters from Somerset,
Ohio, came to establish an academy for
the education of young women in the
Diocese of Nashville, in August of 1860.
Classes opened in October on a hill in
North Nashville known as Mount
Vernon Gardens.
Mother Frances Walsh - who was still
in her teens at the time - kept a journal
of these first days. In referring to the
boarding students’ schedule, she wrote
that the school hours were long, from
8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with an hour’s
intermission at noon. However, “. . . there
were no studies after supper as it was
thought that evenings spent free from all
serious application were conducive to
health of mind and body.”
Music and art were important areas of
emphasis from the outset. Included in one
of the Academy’s first courses of study
were: painting, sculpture, pottery and
china, piano, organ, harp, violin, and voice.
“But for the terrible cloud that lowered
and threatened, all things foretold a bright
and prosperous career for St. Cecilia
Academy.” That cloud was the Civil War.
The Academy’s early years were
inextricably bound up with the Civil War.
The first commencement exercises were
held in June of 1862. Miss Nellie Doyle of
Tennessee and Miss Sally Schipp of
Kentucky graduated in the concert hall,
which had been constructed in 1861,
despite the war, to meet a growing
enrollment. Lanterns borrowed from the
Letter from the President
of the Alumnae Association
Dear Fellow Alumnae,
I am so grateful to have seen so many of you at our annual alumnae
luncheon on June 13. It was a very special day. I want to thank personally
all of you who were able to make it this year. It was especially moving to
see so many girls from my class (1979) and others come to celebrate their
reunions. I am always touched by the distances travelled to come home.
This is our family reunion of sorts. You are always welcome here.
The graduation
program from 1865.
railroad lit up the
grounds as over a
thousand guests gathered to hear the Reverend
Mr. McDonald, a Scottish Presbyterian minister,
deliver St. Cecilia’s first baccalaureate address.
The conclusion of the war brought with it financial
disaster to St. Cecilia. A public auction of the school
grounds and personal property was advertised in
1867. However, due to timely intervention by
Bishop P. A. Feehan and a 30-day rosary novena
said by the sisters, the Motherhouse and the
Academy were saved.
Prosperity gradually returned to Tennessee,
and by 1880 applications to St. Cecilia had
increased to the extent that a new building was
needed. By 1884, the Sisters had satisfied the
schools debt.
Today St. Cecilia Motherhouse is the oldest
residence in Nashville continuously owned and
occupied by the same “family.” Further additions
to the campus at Eighth Avenue and Clay Street
were made in 1888 and then again in 1904.
With the city’s growth and general movement
westward, in 1923 the Congregation decided to
purchase the 92 acre Joseph Warner Estate in West
Nashville. Thirty-three years later, on the feast of
St. Cecilia, Nov. 22, 1956, ground was broken on
the Overbrook property for the new St. Cecilia
Academy. A year later, the statue of St. Cecilia was
set in place and the new building on Harding
Road was dedicated by Bishop Adrian. •
We have had such a busy year with alumnae events and we hope to see
more of all of you in the future. The summer was quiet, but we were
busy planning for the coming year. Please watch the e-newsletter, your
mailboxes and Harpstrings for information on future events. Many of you
are involved in helping with our 150th celebration which will begin with
May Crowning next spring. The excitement continues to build as we
anticipate this yearlong celebration of Nashville’s oldest private school.
I want to thank Sister Mary Thomas, Sister Anna Laura, Debbie Lassiter,
the development staff, Director of Alumnae Relations Chenoa Jacobs and
my fellow board members for all of their support and hard work. We all
work together to help ensure that the alumnae stay connected with one
another and the Academy. Please feel free to contact Chenoa or me with
any requests, suggestions or concerns. •
Outstanding Alumna 2009
Peggy Lampley Robeson, ’60
Peggy Lampley Robeson was named
the Outstanding Alumna 2009 for all
she has done for the St. Cecilia
Academy family since her graduation
in 1960 and for the bridge she has
built between the school and her Class
of 1960.
Peggy Lampley Robeson, ’60, is a
legend at St. Cecilia Academy.
Her SCA classmate Pat Weisiger
Morel said Peggy “has held the class
together” since graduation. She has
planned a class reunion for her class
almost yearly as well as monthly
“get-togethers.”
“Peggy gives freely of herself to any
and everyone who has any needs,”
Mrs. Morel said. “She is warmhearted,
loving and giving.”
Peggy volunteers her time to St. Cecilia
Academy in countless ways. She
faithfully attends alumnae events,
volunteers to help set up events and
helps with such tasks as mailings.
Peggy attended grade school at Holy
Legacy Society could be your future at SCA
St. Cecilia Academy has a proud
legacy of developing young women
for success in life. This work could
not be done without the sacrifice
and effort of the sisters and faculty
who teach and mentor each
student. They do not do this work
alone. Without the help of our
generous benefactors, St. Cecilia
Looking back with the Class of 1979
Reunion brings
back St. Cecilia
memories, friends
By Nancy Lesser ’79
Teachers throughout our four years at
St. Cecilia Academy told us we were
special; many of our parents said the
same. Deep down, we knew it ourselves
and were buoyed by the encouragement
of our supporters. “Yes we’re fine,
‘cause we’re ’79!” was imprinted on the
buttons we wore. “We Are Family” was
our Top 40 pop mantra, and classmate
Emily Eyre’s “Friendship Song” brought
us to tears when the time came to leave
SCA.
We were a class comprised of distinct
individuals that were bound by a
common admiration for and pride in
each other’s differences—no small feat
for a gaggle of boy-crazy adolescent
girls. We were smart, we were athletic,
and we were leaders. We were musical,
we were creative, and we were funny.
And we seemed to sense, even then,
that we were on the verge of becoming
the confident women of faith that we
are today, three decades after our
graduation.
We entered SCA as a segmented group,
but we did win the coveted spirit award
as mere freshmen and we did graduate
as an extremely close class of 63 strong!
Then in the summer of 2009 we met up
again for our 30th reunion. It was a time
for great celebration and introspection.
It was a thanksgiving for the blessing of
being united as St. Cecilia girls.
No one could have prepared us for the
wondrous gift of each other’s love and
support 30 years later. Deep and abiding
friendships were rekindled with each
warm embrace and shriek of joy uttered
at the recognition of a face not seen for
The Class of 1979 gathered at the Annual Alumnae Luncheon for a photograph. The class held its 30th
reunion this summer.
years, but certainly not forgotten. Never
could we have predicted that 73% of
our class would return to Nashville
to celebrate this milestone.
Kathleen Hixon Geary woke up that
morning determined to be at the
reunion after all. Driving six hours
from Mississippi, she arrived in time for
Arianne’s afternoon pool party. Dawn
Ann Murphy Tynes had informed her
teenagers that the fallen tree on their
Birmingham, Ala., garage would just
have to wait; she wasn’t going to miss
catching up with old friends. Margaret
Derrick Simpson pulled in from a long
day on the road just in time for the start
of the evening’s festivities at Lions Head
Clubhouse.
Forty-six of us came from near and far,
each feeling in her own heart the strong
tug to be back in Nashville. Laura
Hooper Ripp and Leigh Glasser Wolfson
flew in from the West Coast; Michelle
Barr Haase and reunion co-organizer
Amy Witt Smith arrived from Chicago
and Minneapolis. Others travelled from
Texas, Virginia, Georgia and North
Carolina. Claire had not been back since
graduation and was so very glad that
she, like the rest of us, had decided to
attend.
We learned that we are school and
community volunteers, and we are
working professionals: teachers, nurses,
anesthetists, realtors, physical therapists
and speech pathologists. We are sales
directors and financial consultants, we
are television station managers and
meteorologists, and we are writers and
singers. We are wives, ex-wives, and
stepmothers, and we are breast cancer
survivors. We are mothers of children
ranging in age from 3 to 26 and we are
mothers of St. Cecilia girls.
The highlights of our St. Cecilia days
were the same for many of us. We
recalled the myriad of hysterical student
council skits and the cold foyer floor,
selling doughnuts and pizza for
fundraising, kidnapping and being
kidnapped as freshmen, singing
“Cantantibus” with all its vocal parts,
moments alone in the grotto, and senior
year.
We remembered oh so many of our
teachers for a wide variety of reasons.
It is doubtful even they could know
how much of an impact they had on
our young souls when they told us
to follow our hearts, to believe in
ourselves, to be beautiful people on the
inside, or to remember that failure,
and prayer, are the means to success.
Our SCA teachers challenged us to do
better because they knew we could.
We wish we were able to tell Mrs.
Derryberry that we still remember the
Canterbury Tales prologue in Middle
English. We want to tell Ms. York that as
much as we abhorred memorizing every
bone and muscle in the body, her health
class challenged us to do the impossible.
And we still marvel at the ability of
Mother Ann Marie to always know when
our skirts were rolled up to take in the
sun, or, when we were not in class.
In our adulthood, we view ourselves as
grounded, independent, grateful for all
we have been given, and blessed with our
families’ love. We have discovered our
true selves in our struggles and triumphs,
and are more confident than we ever
were in high school. We are strong and
assertive women, happy for the most part
and optimistic about the future.
The golden thread that binds us
together, and that has sustained each
of us through loss, change and family
tragedies, is our faith. St. Cecilia
Academy gave us the courage to use
that faith and go confidently into
this world to make a difference.
We were a really good class.
We still are. •
Leigh Glasser Wolfson, ’79, carries the
St. Cecilia spirit with her to the West Coast
By Meaghan Connolly, ’07
Like her mother and grandmother
before her, Leigh Glaser Wolfson is a
graduate of St. Cecilia Academy. And
like all of St. Cecilia’s graduates, she
stands as a tribute to the invaluable
knowledge and experience St. Cecilia
provides.
The Dominican Sisters, who “truly make
St. Cecilia so special,” were an integral
part of Wolfson’s time at St. Cecilia. It is
from them, she says, that she gained the
discipline and confidence to succeed
in academic, career and personal
endeavors. For Wolfson, the Dominican
Sisters are not only “outstanding
educators,” but also invaluable “mentors
of young women.” Wolfson, who
graduated in 1979, attributes much of
her personal success to her founding
years at St. Cecilia. “I think SCA was a
wonderful stepping stone to college and
adult life,” she said.
After graduating from St. Cecilia,
Wolfson earned a degree in journalism
from the University of Mississippi. She
began her career in broadcasting and
soon found her niche as an on-camera
weather forecaster.
Wolfson served as the creative director
and weather forecaster for a station in
Greenwood, Miss., and as the director
of public affairs and weather forecaster
for a station in Huntsville, Ala. She then
took a job in Raleigh-Durham, N.C., as a
weather forecaster and news reporter
for two years before moving to Seattle,
Washington.
Wolfson remained in Seattle for three
years as a weather forecaster and
environmental reporter. Disney then
asked her to help start a new,
independent TV station in Los Angeles,
Calif. She served as the station’s weather
Leigh Glasser Wolfson, ’79, returned to Nashville this summer for her class reunion.
forecaster and news reporter, and as
talk show host. Wolfson has been in
San Francisco for the past 19 years at the
Disney-ABC station there. She received
a second degree in meteorology during
this time. Wolfson works as the station’s
on-air meteorologist and as a live-segment
host for the station’s live weekday
entertainment show, View from the Bay.
Throughout her extensive career,
Wolfson has garnered many awards
and acknowledgements. She has
received numerous awards in broadcast
excellence, was named Northern
California Broadcast Woman of the Year
in 1998 and 2004, and won an Emmy for
her work on View from the Bay in 2007.
Wolfson is also a member of the
American Meteorological Society
and served as an advisor on
environmental reporting in Washington,
continues to expand.
“Personally, the Sisters of St. Cecilia
gave me the courage and confidence
to work towards a goal,” Wolfson
said. “I thank Sister Phillip Joseph for
her belief in me and for all her kind
words of encouragement then and
now. I believe it is the teachings,
guidance, love and care of the
Dominican Sisters that truly make St.
Cecilia Academy so special.”
“In June I came back to attend my
30th class reunion,” she continued.
“It was amazing to see all my classmates.
I am so very proud of each
and every one of them. As a group
we are professionals, mothers, and
wives; we have shared grief together,
and births of children; we have
fought illness; and we are stronger
than ever. I have so many wonderful
memories of St. Cecilia Academy. I
think the friendships and the feeling
of ‘belonging’ stand out the most.”
Wolfson and her husband, Ashton B.
Wolfson, who married in 2002, have
one daughter, Alexandra Leigh. She
hopes that one day her daughter
will follow in her family’s footsteps
and also attend St. Cecilia.
Though life has taken Wolfson far
away from Nashville, it is clear the
SCA spirit continues to permeate
multiple aspects of her life. She
urges graduates and future
graduates “to embrace friends and
family,” and to remember they “will
never be a stranger in the halls of
St. Cecilia.” •
