Playing on new home field, the Scarab soccer team performs tenaciously Scarab spirit soared high this fall with a new $1.5 million track and soccer field and an incredible winning soccer season to go along with it. At the end of the season, the SCA soccer team held an overall record of 13-1-3 and clinched the TSSAA District I title. The team won its home quarterfinals game and ended the season fourth in the region. The team began home play on Sept. 10 following a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new track and soccer field, which is shared by SCA and Overbrook School. “It feels so much better, the ball moves so smoothly across the grass,” said Roxana Pita-Romero, a junior on the soccer team. “It feels like home.” “It’s really motivating to be playing on the new field,” adds junior Natalie Goodrum, who scored the very first goal on the new soccer field. “It really pumps us up before our games. It’s a great accessory to our season so far.” St. Cecilia Athletic Director Jerry Landers said the new facility gives the St. Cecilia athletic teams greater “flexibility in scheduling” practices and events, and is giving the entire school community “a sense of pride about having a first class facility.” SCA junior Roxana Pita-Romero protects the ball on home field during a game this season. “Being on the new field has been awesome,” said SCA soccer Coach Emily Marcouiller. “The girls get so excited about playing on it. They have a lot of pride and determination once they step out on the field and they play with all their heart and soul and leave it all out on the field. That says a lot about their character.” While the girls love playing on the new field and have enjoyed their new home field advantage, they know this is just the beginning of what the entire facility will be. In Phase II of the project, a 3,700 square foot field house will be built that will provide home and visitor locker rooms, concessions, spectator restrooms, a first aid area and storage space. Work continues to be done to raise funds for bleachers and a scoreboard. This soccer season is also just the beginning of successful seasons to come with the young team. There are Sophomore Olivia Glascoe defends the Scarab goal during a game. only three seniors on the team this year and a strong starting line-up from the junior and sophomore classes. “The girls want to get better and they put a lot of hard work in day after day at practice and by that, they continue to improve game after game,” Coach Marcouiller said. “I do hold them to a high standard and they constantly challenge themselves to get better to meet the challenge given.” • SCA adds bowling and lacrosse By Athletic Director Jerry Landers St. Cecilia Academy will be adding two sports to its Scarab lineup this year. During the winter season, we will be bringing back bowling. Bowling is a TSSAA sanctioned sport and will broaden student involvement in the athletic program. Bowling has grown as a TSSAA sport and it concludes the year with state championship competition. The team will be comprised of at least six participants and competition is scratch scoring with no handicapping. St. Cecilia will also be adding lacrosse as a spring sport. Lacrosse is not currently sanctioned as a TSSAA sport, but like swimming it is a club sport with a number of high schools adding it each year. We will be building our program this year to get ready for the club status. For the 2009-2010 year, we will make lacrosse an intramural sport to draw interest and develop skill level. We believe that these sports will add excitement and be successful parts of our overall athletic program. • www.stcecilia.edu HARPSTRINGS 5
