Distinction
(Continued from page 26)
fleeting areas surrounding the lighting
fixtures.
Azurite and midnight blue alternate in
the practical plastic panels forming the
dado below the murals, while to the rear
of the latter these two blues are used to
create the illusion of bold vertical fluting
on the side wall before it joins the rear.
The walls of the standee area are
covered in the deepest blue in heavy plastic
material that withstands much abuse before
showing wear. Thus through the use
of a great variety of blue tones in a restrained
color scheme the whole expresses
splendid unity.
The decorative panels themselves are
designed to appeal to the tastes of the
majority of patrons through graceful, natural
forms executed clearly in defined
color contrast. There is a suggestion of
scenic distance in the cloud motifs, while
the leaf and flower suggestions which have
proved popular eleswhere, add a needed
embellishment here to the otherwise plain
blocks of color in the rest of the auditorium.
Shades of coral and blue are used in these
figures against the off-white acoustic material
of the walls.
The artist has so styled the treatment
that the panels have true character and
add a definite air of distinction. Another
quality of the room which may be commended
is that it does not appeal exclusively
to any age group. It is neither too
gay nor too sedate in design and its color
scheme is not too intense for the elders and
is yet vibrant enough for the youthful patron.
This kind of balance is hardly an accident
and shows again what is meant by
planning an interior for a definite purpose,
in this case to please a majority of
average city neighborhood moviegoers.
The lobby of the Ezella is just as
thoughtfully planned. A doorhigh dado of
walnut paneling forms a rich and practical
background for well-placed coming attraction
posters and carries a trough at the
top for indirect lighting around the room.
Above the doors from the street and those
to the auditorium are recesses in vibrant
turquoise blue on which are painted motifs
of flower and leaf forms in the same colors
as those in the auditorium.
Across the middle of the foyer is a
wide architectural band of blue which is
treated with similar leaf motifs around
the large mirrors set near their bases. The
recessed portions of the wall and ceiling
are painted a soft coral-sand, a color of
warm and flattering reflective qualities
which women appreciate.
The men's smoking room, the ladies'
powder room, the standee areas, all are
done with the same discernment and stimulating
effect.
