Communities<br />
<strong>Tees</strong> Achieve boosts<br />
hospice fund-raising<br />
Over the past seven<br />
years Barbara Alders<strong>on</strong><br />
has been making and<br />
selling crafts and cards<br />
to raise funds for the<br />
Butterwick Hospice.<br />
After attending a <strong>Tees</strong><br />
Achieve course in Photoshop<br />
Elements at Billingham<br />
Community Centre, Barbara<br />
is now producing her own<br />
card designs to sell <strong>on</strong> the<br />
internet.<br />
The cards have g<strong>on</strong>e down a<br />
storm and Barbara has been<br />
able to sell hundreds in a<br />
short time – boosting the<br />
amount she can raise for the<br />
hospice.<br />
At the end of last term, she<br />
decided to try her hand at<br />
designing cards for other<br />
crafters to make, using the<br />
skills and c<strong>on</strong>fidence gained<br />
from the course.<br />
Sue Applet<strong>on</strong>, <strong>Tees</strong> Achieve<br />
Subject Leader for Art,<br />
Crafts and Digital Media,<br />
said: “Barbara gained lots<br />
of new skills over her 10-<br />
week course. It’s fantastic<br />
that she is using these in an<br />
enterprising way to help the<br />
local community.”<br />

Teens prevent terrorism<br />
In partnership with<br />
Cleveland Police,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Council</strong><br />
hosted an innovative<br />
c<strong>on</strong>ference designed to<br />
provide young people<br />
with the opportunity<br />
to discuss terrorism and<br />
radicalisati<strong>on</strong> in a safe<br />
envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />
The police developed the<br />
Youth Prevent c<strong>on</strong>ference<br />
as part of the Government’s<br />
‘Prevent’ strategy, which<br />
aims to prevent people<br />
from becoming terrorists or<br />
supporting violent extremists.<br />
Schools across the <strong>Tees</strong> Valley<br />
took part in the c<strong>on</strong>ference<br />
which saw young people take<br />
part in a series of informative<br />
and challenging workshops.<br />
Raising funds for young and old<br />
Nearly £6,000 was raised<br />
for the Mayor of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong>-<strong>Tees</strong>’<br />
Benevolent Fund<br />
at the Mayor’s annual<br />
charity dinner dance.<br />
<strong>Council</strong>lor Paul Kirt<strong>on</strong>,<br />
Mayor of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> and the<br />
Mayoress, Mary Kirt<strong>on</strong>,<br />
hosted the ball at the<br />
Wynyard Rooms.<br />
So far the Mayor’s fund<br />
has supported both older<br />
and younger people in the<br />
<strong>Borough</strong> through an Active<br />
for Life Group for the older<br />
residents of Queen’s Park<br />
Housing Estate; music events;<br />
sporting activities such as<br />
football, rugby, rowing and<br />
golf; groups of girl guides, air<br />
cadets and disabled children<br />
in the area as well as assisting<br />
projects in Canada, Africa<br />
and Uganda.
