Regenerati<strong>on</strong> and Transport<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Borough</strong> is set to change over the next decade.<br />

Regenerati<strong>on</strong> to the tune of £500 Milli<strong>on</strong> will bring about benefits to housing, schools, medical services, leisure facilities and<br />

Step closer for world class water course<br />

British Waterways has<br />

appointed c<strong>on</strong>tractor JN<br />

Bentley to start the multimilli<strong>on</strong><br />

pound upgrade to<br />

the white water course.<br />

Meldrum C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> will<br />

also c<strong>on</strong>struct a new £235K<br />

canoe storage building as part<br />

of the overall redevelopment.<br />

The plans will see<br />

improvements to the existing<br />

white water course and<br />

create an internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

standard facility at the <strong>Tees</strong>,<br />

attracting world class events<br />

and athletes from around the<br />

globe.<br />

The improvements involve<br />

rec<strong>on</strong>figuring the main<br />

course, building a sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

shorter course and installing<br />

four massive Archimedes<br />

screws, to pump the water<br />

needed to create c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

for canoeists, rafters and<br />

other sports activities.<br />

Better c<strong>on</strong>nected<br />

The <strong>Tees</strong> Valley is set<br />

to benefit from more<br />

than £100 milli<strong>on</strong><br />

of investment in its<br />

transport network over<br />

the next three years.<br />

The breakdown looks like this:<br />

• A £62 milli<strong>on</strong> investment in<br />

the <strong>Tees</strong> Valley bus network<br />

• A £35 milli<strong>on</strong> investment in<br />

the first phase of the <strong>Tees</strong><br />

Valley Metro project<br />

• A £5 milli<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong><br />

towards the East Billingham<br />

Transport Corridor scheme<br />

• A £4 milli<strong>on</strong> innovative<br />

traffic management scheme<br />

<strong>on</strong> the A19 and A66<br />

The first phase of the <strong>Tees</strong> Valley<br />

Metro due to start in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2010</str<strong>on</strong>g> is<br />

designed to link the main centres<br />

together using the existing rail<br />

network and pave the way for a<br />

future tram-train metro system.<br />

This phase would include<br />

new platforms at Darlingt<strong>on</strong><br />

and Middlesbrough stati<strong>on</strong>s;<br />

relocati<strong>on</strong> of the existing<br />

stati<strong>on</strong> at Durham <strong>Tees</strong> Valley<br />

Airport; stati<strong>on</strong> improvements<br />

at Eaglescliffe, Thornaby and<br />

Hartlepool and new stati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

at James Cook University<br />

Hospital and <strong>on</strong>e in Redcar<br />

and Cleveland. Keep up to<br />

will use river water to<br />

generate electricity making it<br />

the UK’s first fully sustainable<br />

white water course.<br />

Work <strong>on</strong> the new, bigger<br />

canoe storage building has<br />

already commenced.<br />

The upgraded course will<br />

be a catalyst for wider<br />

regenerati<strong>on</strong> opportunities<br />

al<strong>on</strong>g the River <strong>Tees</strong> corridor.<br />

The site has already been<br />

c<strong>on</strong>firmed as a Pre-Games<br />

Training Camp ahead of the<br />

L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> 2012 Olympic Games<br />

and Paralympic Games.<br />

Funding for the multi milli<strong>on</strong><br />

pound world class upgrade<br />

has been secured from<br />

Regi<strong>on</strong>al Development Agency<br />

One North East, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Council</strong>, Sport England and<br />

British Waterways. The new<br />

£235k canoe storage building<br />

is funded through Sport<br />

England Community Club<br />

Development Programme and<br />

Canoe England.
