The <strong>Borough</strong> covers an area of 20,000 hectares (49,000<br />

acres). The River <strong>Tees</strong> is a significant feature of the<br />

<strong>Borough</strong>’s landscape, and is the focus of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>’s historic<br />

development. It flows over 85 winding miles (140km) from<br />

the Pennine Hills to its wide estuary where it meets the<br />

North Sea.<br />

The <strong>Borough</strong> currently has a populati<strong>on</strong> of over 193,000<br />

people, which has c<strong>on</strong>tinued to grow since 1991. Most of<br />

these people live in the four principal towns which make up<br />

the <strong>Borough</strong> - <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>, is the largest, then Billingham,<br />

Thornaby and Yarm. Approximately, 37,000 children (aged<br />

between 0-15 years) live in the <strong>Borough</strong>, with nearly<br />

35,000 retired people.<br />

The ec<strong>on</strong>omic profile of the <strong>Borough</strong> is complex with 15%<br />

of residents falling within the top 20% of most affluent<br />

areas nati<strong>on</strong>ally; whilst 34% of residents live in the 20%<br />

most deprived areas of England. Unemployment in the<br />

<strong>Borough</strong> is 3.6% compared to a nati<strong>on</strong>al average of 2.6%.<br />

The <strong>Borough</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Tees</strong> is located in the North<br />

East of England, at the centre of the <strong>Tees</strong> Valley. It lies<br />

approximately 40 miles north of York and 30 miles south of<br />

Newcastle.<br />

The majority of the <strong>Borough</strong> is rural and there are also<br />

some important landscapes such as the marshland around<br />

Seal Sands.<br />

15.1 milli<strong>on</strong> visitors come to the <strong>Tees</strong> Valley and bring £164<br />

milli<strong>on</strong> into the ec<strong>on</strong>omy. The area benefits from a high<br />

proporti<strong>on</strong> of day visitors, especially to places like the RSPB<br />

Wildlife and Discovery Park at Saltholme.<br />
