3. Valuing our<br />

heritage<br />

It is clear that we all have played and are c<strong>on</strong>tinuing to play an important role in valuing<br />

our heritage. The wealth of projects and work that has been undertaken to ensure the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> and celebrati<strong>on</strong> of our heritage is both substantial and diverse.<br />

It is vital that we celebrate our achievements to date and a flavour of our commitment,<br />

work and projects are given in this chapter.<br />

These projects include cross-cutting initiatives that include a mix of research, presentati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

recording and restorati<strong>on</strong> works. Also included are a selecti<strong>on</strong> of projects focussed <strong>on</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>serving and protecting our heritage, as well as projects which aim to promote<br />

enjoyment, understanding and celebrati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Prest<strong>on</strong> hall Museum and Park projects<br />

Thanks to funding from both the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Heritage</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lottery Fund and <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Tees</strong> <strong>Borough</strong><br />

<strong>Council</strong>, a £7 milli<strong>on</strong> transformati<strong>on</strong> is currently underway (2009 – 2012) at Prest<strong>on</strong> Hall<br />

Museum & Park, seeing significant improvements to the visitor experience.<br />

Works recently completed within the Museum include the Spence Courtyard c<strong>on</strong>taining<br />

purpose built facilities for both Craft and Collecti<strong>on</strong>s, and a new Learning Resource from<br />

which a wide range of Educati<strong>on</strong> and Outreach will be delivered. Meanwhile, in the Park,<br />

works are <strong>on</strong>going to improve river access, and develop historic features such as the<br />

Victorian Walled kitchen garden around the site.<br />

The final Phase of these exciting works carries <strong>on</strong> throughout 2011 and <strong>on</strong> until Spring<br />

2012. This includes upgrading of access throughout the venue, the repair and c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong><br />

of the existing Grade II listed building and a complete exhibiti<strong>on</strong> redisplay, telling the<br />

diverse story of the regi<strong>on</strong> and its people in an accessible and dynamic way.<br />
