important venue when it brought The Beatles, Rolling<br />
St<strong>on</strong>es and other big names to perform to packed houses.<br />
The <strong>Council</strong> is working closely with the owner of the Globe<br />
Theatre, a historic building at the Northern End of the High<br />
Street, to bring it back into use as a live entertainment<br />
venue.<br />
It is anticipated that the £4m refurbishment scheme will be<br />
completed in late 2012 and <strong>on</strong>ce complete, the 2,500<br />
capacity venue will help to significantly improve evening<br />
activity in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> Town Centre.<br />

Management Plan<br />
The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> Town Centre C<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> Area Management<br />
Plan sets out how the historic and architectural character of<br />
the Area should be maintained by positive management,<br />
appropriate replacements, repairs, and where necessary<br />
changes are permitted. The Plan sets out guidance <strong>on</strong> the<br />
maintenance, repair and replacement of all aspects of<br />
structures within the C<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> Area; including roofs,<br />
walls, windows and doors, rainwater goods and external<br />
areas such as drive and footways.<br />
Town centre stockt<strong>on</strong> - Urban design<br />
Guide<br />
The draft <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> Town Centre Urban Design Guide aims<br />
to improve the vitality and viability of the town centre by<br />
providing design guidance for any party involved in the<br />
regenerati<strong>on</strong> of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stockt<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> central area. The guide sets a<br />
framework for establishing a str<strong>on</strong>g network of buildings,<br />
streets and spaces that delivers quality and meets the needs<br />
of the town centre’s users, whilst protecting and<br />
reinforcing its distinctive historic character.<br />
Our Visi<strong>on</strong><br />
We have set out below 4 statements which form the<br />
foundati<strong>on</strong> of our visi<strong>on</strong> for heritage in the future.<br />
Underlying these statements are our <strong>on</strong>-going and future<br />
objectives, which in turn will be implemented in our Acti<strong>on</strong><br />
Plan which is c<strong>on</strong>tained within a separate linked document.<br />
1) We recognise and will c<strong>on</strong>tinue supporting the<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> made to celebrating, protecting and<br />
interpreting our heritage by local communities,<br />
societies and volunteers.<br />
• Support public research and study of the historic<br />
envir<strong>on</strong>ment through promoti<strong>on</strong> of available sources<br />
of informati<strong>on</strong> and study / open days.<br />
• Encourage the community to share pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />
experiences and memorabilia so that vital<br />
informati<strong>on</strong> can be recorded and objects displayed.<br />
• C<strong>on</strong>tinue to develop projects where volunteers can<br />
gain heritage skills and widen their local history<br />
knowledge – giving them c<strong>on</strong>fidence to deliver<br />
heritage projects in the future.<br />
2) To provide the greatest possible access to our<br />
heritage for all of our communities and visitors to<br />
the borough.<br />
