page 2 Community Connection • Summer 20011 HIGHLIGHTING EMPLOYEES News of St. Robert M. Paul’s Piegari is the new Retirem PERSPECTIVE In the late 1950’s Harold B. Robinson, rector of St. Paul’s Church looked out into his parish community and became aware of a tremendous need. He recognized that many of the elderly in his community were reclusive, were not involved, had poor diets, and little social interaction. With this recognition came a vision to meet the needs of the elderly that has, over the last 40 years, become St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services. Today we continue to follow his vision by recognizing the needs of the elderly in the San Diego community and expanding our services to meet them. One tremendous need that we have recognized is the large number of fragile and medically underserved seniors who live in San Diego. We have made a commitment to serve these seniors through the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). This will be a huge step of faith for St. Paul’s, it may even seem overwhelming to some, but there can be no doubt it is certainly true to the vision that Bishop Robinson first conceived. I invite you to participate by supporting the Capital Campaign with your gifts and pledges. In this way Father Robinson’s vision, which has always been to meet the needs of seniors, will continue to be a reality. Cheryl Wilson, CEO Administrator of St. Paul’s Villa. He spent 20 years in New Jersey as Administrator for two non-profit nursing facilities. Bob is a graduate of Wagner College in Staten Island, NY and Long Island University in Brooklyn. In 1997 he was awarded the Distinguished Administrator Award by the NJ Chapter of the American College of Health Care Administrators. He enjoys the sunny and warm California climate. Bob also appreciates working at a facility, which offers both Independent and Assisted Living. Gerry Macartney, who is the AM Head Waitstaff at St. Paul’s Manor, recently received her pin for fifteen years of service from Robert Rentto, Chair of the St. Paul’s Board of Directors, and Cheryl Wilson, CEO. NATIONAL NURSES WEEK CELEBRATED AT STPAUL’S Special events such as “Treasure Hunt” where Nurses had to guess how many pills were in a bottle and Wheel Chair races were a part of a week long celebration for National Nurses Week. A daily raffle, banners, and cake and punch helped St. Paul’s express gratitude to our Estrella Ganzon, CNA at the John A. McColl Family Health Center wonderful nursing was voted Nurses’s Queen by her staff. co-workers and Residents. TAKE A CHILD TO WORK DAY A recent “Take your Child to Work” day was held at St. Paul’s. This day is designed to give children exposure to what is required to be part of the work force. Those who participated this year were (l-r) Shari Arney, Villa Admissions Coordinator, her daughter Rachelle, Marc Magana, Physical Therapist, and his daughter Kelsey, Rose Manzano, Villa Chef, and her granddaughter Amber, and John Scholte, Marketing and Public Relations, and his son and daughter, John and Rebecca.
Community Connection • Summer 2001 page 3 Highlighting ent Homes Foundation Board Members LUV CONNECTION Susan Stone- Hayes, is a new member of St. Paul’s Retirement Homes Foundation Board. Susan is the San Diego representative for the National Susan Stone-Hayes Cathedral in Washington D.C. She is active with Episcopal Community Services and a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Del Mar. She became involved with St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services when her father was active in the Inter-generational program. Susan is one of this years honorees for the LUV Gala at the Sheraton Harbor Island on August 24, 2001 and has served the Board on committees in the past. Under the early morning skies of San Diego “May grey,” I pen these lines to family and friends of St. Paul’s with gladness and great enthusiasm for yet another wonderful summer of planning and culmination of the 17th annual LUV Gala. This year LUV is very blessed to have the very talented and vivacious Lanita Carroll and her husband The Very Rev. James E. Carroll, dean emeritus of St. Paul’s Cathedral as our gala co-chairs. The gala is set for August 24th at the Harbor Island Sheraton, as you read this article you should already be in possession of your save the date card. Please contact the foundation office if you did not receive a card. If you are not able to attend the gala, I encourage you to consider sponsorship in some manner of the gala. Once again contact myself at 619.298.7261x325 or the foundation office if you have questions. With the proceeds from last years gala LUV was able to purchase a “wheelchair accessible” van. The van was dedicated on Wednesday, May 16th. The monthly meetings of LUV continue to be held at the Imperial House Restaurant at 505 Kalmia, San Diego. I invite you to attend our June 21st meeting beginning with social hour at 11:30 and Kathryn Bunch-Hoyecki President of Love Uniting Volunteers lunch at 12 noon. One of this year’s honorees, Susan Stone Hayes will give us a mini tour with slides of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Remember that there is no meeting in July and August. We resume again on September 20th. P a t r i c i a DeMarce is a new member of the St. Paul’s Retirement Homes Foundation Board. She Patricia DeMarce became aware of the programs and services of St. Paul’s when she was invited to an Interest Luncheon and later invited to serve on a committee. Patricia has been described as a Community Leader serving on various boards and committees. She has received the Women of Dedication Award and the Historical Preservationist of the Year Award. ST. PAUL’S HOSTS ROTARIANS Admiring the new Fire Truck are Richard Thorn, St. Paul’s Foundation Board member, Cheryl Wilson, St. Paul’s CEO, and Robert Rentto, Chair Board of Directors. On April 27, 2001 the San Diego Rotary welcomed the Yuba City Rotary with a reception to celebrate the Fire Truck that Yuba City has donated for use in Tijuana. The Fire Truck was delivered via Semi-trailer, with each mile from Yuba City to Tijuana raising money for the eradication of Polio worldwide. Cheryl Wilson, Rotary District Chair for Polio eradication and St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services provided the party location, food and wine, and Chris Cramer of Karl Strauss Brewery provided the beer.
