1959<br />

Robert Bero, artist and printmaker,<br />

died at his home in<br />

Tuxedo Park, NY, on June 24.<br />

Bero received his BFA at the<br />

Pratt Institute and later graduated<br />

from Yale with an MFA.<br />

He taught at SUNY Potsdam,<br />

Brown University, and SUNY<br />

Purchase. Critic John Canaday<br />

wrote in The New York Times<br />

that “Bero’s enormous woodcuts,<br />

years in the making and<br />

days in the printing, expand<br />

the horizons of printmaking.”<br />

Bero’s work has been exhibited<br />

at the Library of Congress,<br />

the Smithsonian Institute, and<br />

Yale, among other places.<br />

1963<br />

Dr. Victor M. Zion has five<br />

children and two grandchildren<br />

and loves retirement.<br />

1965<br />

Rob Ratzan recently released<br />

a new album, Mystereality,<br />

1968<br />

George Couri runs a large<br />

international rug company.<br />

Richard B. Eckhaus is a<br />

semi-retired freelance writer<br />

living in Alameda, CA, with<br />

his wife, Kate. After working as<br />

a stage technician, Eckhaus<br />

began writing for film and television,<br />

regularly contributing to<br />

programs such as The Jeffersons,<br />

Welcome Back, Kotter, Diff’rent<br />

Strokes, and Angie, and feature<br />

films. He was a Humanitas Prize<br />

nominee for his work on The<br />

Jeffersons. From 1991 to 2005,<br />

he taught at Boston University<br />

and the University of Maine,<br />

and he wrote a media/humor<br />

column for The Boston Phoenix.<br />

He and his wife settled in the<br />

San Francisco Bay Area in 2005.<br />

Ronald Haddad worked at<br />

NYU for ten years as a<br />

research scientist in the field<br />

of human tumor immunology.<br />

Since 1982, he has taught high<br />

school science in Blairstown,<br />

NJ, and Boulder, CO. He and<br />

his wife, Eileen Faughey, were<br />

married in 1985. Haddad<br />

writes: “Since college, I have<br />

had an intense interest in<br />

the outdoors: cycling, backpacking,<br />

fishing, and backcountry<br />

skiing. We have been<br />

involved in environmental<br />

issues since the 1970s. I have<br />

been the recipient of two<br />

Outstanding Science Teacher<br />

Awards from Sigma Xi, the<br />

national research society. I<br />

am most grateful to chemistry<br />

teacher Mr. Weinroth for<br />

encouraging me in science<br />

and for getting me to behave<br />

like a human being in class.”<br />

Paul Homsy is an accomplished<br />

international lawyer<br />

specializing in the Middle<br />

East.<br />

Peter Sessa, the first <strong>Poly</strong><br />

swim captain under coach Ed<br />

Ruck, spoke at an April dinner<br />

held in honor of Ruck’s 40th<br />

and final year at <strong>Poly</strong>. (See page<br />

10.) Sessa said that his former<br />

coach helped earn his team<br />

their first winning season, 6-3.<br />

Robert M. Shelala has two<br />

daughters, both out of college<br />

and married, and a son who<br />

graduated from college with<br />

honors. Shelala enjoys skiing<br />

and sailing and recently<br />

sailed to Alaska with Scott<br />

Miller ’67.<br />

Dr. Vincent J. Vigorita, chairman<br />

of the <strong>Poly</strong> <strong>Prep</strong> Board of<br />

Trustees, writes: “Our greatest<br />

joys are the personal and<br />

professional growth of our<br />

children: Vincent, 15, in his<br />

first year at the Hotchkiss<br />

<strong>School</strong>; Tommy, 12, who plays<br />

guitar and piano; stepson<br />

J.W., 29, who works for the<br />

Indianapolis Colts and is<br />

engaged to be married; and<br />

stepdaughter Jenni, 26, who is a<br />

sports documentary producer<br />

Vincent Vigorita ’68 and his<br />

wife, Patty.<br />

based in Chicago. Four healthy<br />

and accomplished children—we<br />

are blessed!” Vigorita fondly<br />

remembers eloquent lectures<br />

from Miles Kastendieck, the<br />

Bearns speaking contest, and<br />

productions by David Winder.<br />

1970<br />

Lennox E. Montrose composed,<br />

arranged, and produced<br />

the songs that make up<br />

the album Euphoria, by artist<br />

Monty Guy. The CD was<br />

included in the 50th Grammy<br />

Awards Entry List Process, and<br />

garnered 12 credits, included<br />

Album of the Year, Record of<br />

the Year, and Producer of the<br />

Year. At <strong>Poly</strong>, Montrose participated<br />

in track, for which he<br />

won a Scoboria Trophy; in soccer<br />

(as captain); in the Art<br />

Club; and in the cheerleading<br />

squad during boosting assemblies.<br />

He has also served as a<br />

member of the Alumni Board<br />

of Governors. He attended the<br />

University Of Pennsylvania<br />

and graduated from the<br />

Wharton <strong>School</strong>.<br />

1973<br />

Steven Barenfeld spent nine<br />

years at the New York Post and<br />

five years at ESPN. He has<br />
