spain Learn a global language FIRST COUNTRY CHOICE Spain is a treasure-trove of arts and culture brimming with flamenco music and dance, bull-fights, fantastic beaches and lots of sunshine. In the cities narrow, twisting old streets suddenly open out to views of daring modern architecture. Several regions in Spain have kept a separate identity, culturally and linguistically. In every region, life is loved and celebrated. All of this diversity combined with a rich heritage of history, art and architecture make Spain a fascinating place to visit as an exchange student. SCHOOL The school year in Spain runs from September to June. School is compulsory from the age of 6 to 14 in Spain. After which you will have the chance to choose a two year theoretical line. Compulsory subjects at high school are Spanish language, literature, foreign languages, social science, geography, history, mathematics, aesthetics, physical education, religion or study activities. At school, you can also choose optional subjects including physics, chemistry, biology, geology, crafts or music. Most Spanish students speak Castilian, but in some regions they speak Catalan, Basque or Galician. After school many students get together or participate in their favourite sports or hobbies like drama or choir. Two years Spanish is preferred to attend a High School in Spain. FAMILY LIFE Spanish people are relaxed and fun-loving. After a week of classes be prepared for weekends of music, dance and fun. You may also have the chance to attend a real Spanish fiesta. On weekends most families attend folklorical events or cultural activities on offer throughout the year. Students are usually placed in small towns, where everyone knows everyone and where it is very easy to have a fun and safe social life. Weekends in Spain are relaxing and filled with music, dance and fun. ”I'm absolutely loving my time here in Spain! My host family is amazing, I've made some awesome friends, visited some incredible places, and really experienced the Spanish culture. After my exchange I am definitely going to keep in contact with everyone that I have got to know throughout my time here. I hope to return in the near future for a visit!” Anna, Rotorua FIRST COUNTRY CHOICE switzerland Where everything runs like clockwork In nearly all towns, big or small, you will find youth clubs offering a wide range of activities, such as sports, drama and socializing. ”Deciding to do an exchange year with STS was the best decision I have ever made....no regrets! My time was spent involving myself in school, learning the language, travelling extensively around Europe and having the time of my life with friends. An exchange year with STS changed my life.” Alice, Auckland Much praise has been given to the beauty of Switzerland. Surrounded by the Alps, Switzerland is known throughout the world for breathtaking scenery and wonderful chocolate, but there are also modern cities here and a world renowned clock and watch industry. The culture of Switzerland has been greatly influenced by the surrounding countries. As a result, Swiss-German, Italian and French are the main languages spoken in multilingual Switzerland. As an exchange student you will be placed in one of the German speaking parts of the country. Two years German is preferred. Applicants with less than two years German will have the opportunity to participate on a language course at the beginning of their exchange. School After Primary school students have various choices of schools to apply for. One choice is the ”Gymnasium”, which leads to the ”Maturitat” (German) or ”Baccalauréat” (French term for the same exam). Foreign students who study in Switzerland are usually placed in the Gymnasium. Students choose between the following sections; Science, Modern Languages, Classic or Latin. In all sections the student takes History, Geo graphy, Physics, Math, French/Italian/German, Biology/Zoology, Arts, PE and Chemistry. Some schools arrange ski trips during the winter holidays. Family life The Swiss family is very hospitable and look forward to welcoming you as their family member. The Swiss enjoy their sport and outdoor life activities. They are very aware of nature and its beauty. Environmental issues have always been of great concern to them. Switzerland is known as the cleanest country in the world and that is thanks to its tidy environment conscious inhabitants. NORDIC COUNTRIES Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark FIRST COUNTRY CHOICE SWEDEN Sweden is an exotic country with mountains, forests, lakes and sandy beaches. High schools in Sweden offer a broadbased curriculum. The school year runs from mid August to early June and the school day is 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. Many teen agers engage in sports after school. On weekends most families organise get-togethers with relatives and friends. NORWAY Norway is known for its deep blue fjords and high mountains. Norwegians are very proud of their country and are known to be friendly with a good sense of humour. High school in Norway runs from mid August to June and the school day is 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. Students have a number of compulsory subjects, but they can also choose among a range of other subjects depending on their interests. Most teenagers join youth clubs in Norway. FINLAND Famous for its 50,000 lakes, Finland offers a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year. Finnish high schools offer a wide variety of vocational and academic courses. As an exchange student you can choose your subjects. The school day usually starts between 8 am and 10 am and ends between 2 pm and 4 pm. Most families live in their own houses in the country side or in spacious apartments in the cities. Families usually spend their evenings together at home. DENMARK Denmark is widely known as ”The Fairy Tale Country” home of Hans Christian Andersen and it is also the oldest monarchy in the world. Castles and charming old buildings are found all over the country, but Denmark is also a very modern society. The Danish high school year begins in mid-August and ends in June. Choose one of the most exotic destinations for a New Zealand high school student & discover the legendary hospitality of the Northern European people! ”Going on exchange is an experience like no other could possibly be. In one year I have lived in two towns, with two groups of truly special friends. I now have two Swedish families to return to and a life time full of memories. I have grown so much as a person, I would not give up the exchange experience for anything. I broke my shell, and now I am better off for it!” Tara, Hokitika FIRST COUNTRY CHOICE China Learn Mandarin in mysterious China Visit one of the greatest wonders of the world while on exchange in China, The Great Wall of China. One of the world’s largest countries, with a history that dates back many thousands of years and traditions that take a while to understand. Life is different in China, but absolutely wonderful. The size of China is approximately the same as the US and in it reside a fifth of the world’s population. The official language of Chinese has various different dialects. Most Chinese people speak Mandarin, which you will also learn. In order to benefit from your time in school and your time in the country, it is a good idea to read about China before you leave. School Schools in China are usually big and the education is of a high standard. You need to be ”I absolutely loved the six months I spent in China. Every moment during my time in China was filled with great joy because I had made some friends for life, I am glad I went and choose STS for my student exchange. The culture was unbelievable, China has so many historical places found nowhere else in the world.” Vivien, Auckland highly motivated to learn. The school year lasts from September to July. You attend school from Monday to Friday, spending the mornings with Chinese students and spending the afternoons learning the Chinese language and the Chinese culture. English and mathematics are compulsory subjects. Examples of other subjects are history, geography, chemistry, biology, IT and physics. Previous knowledge of Chinese is not necessary. For those students departing in August, you will begin your exchange with a three week language course. STS will organise two round trips in China, one to Beijing and the other to Shanghai. Family life Most Chinese people only have one child and there is therefore a big interest in receiving an exchange student. A lot of host families live in the major city regions and speak good English. You will get to know and experience China in a way tourists rarely do. After a while, you will be eating real Chinese food with chopsticks, as if you had never known any different, and celebrating the Chinese New year with your host family as if it were the most natural thing in the world. www.sts-education.co.NZ 13
