READY FOR YOUR EXCITING HIGH SCHOOL YEAR? As an exchange student, you will share a different culture, may learn a new language fluently and you will meet new friends from around the world. Somewhere there is a host family waiting to welcome you in their home. Take the chance and travel into an unforgettable adventure! Life at high school Life at high school is not only about studies. In addition to your studies, you may also participate in other school-related activities and sports. Studying in a foreign language and in a different environment is an educational experience and a useful tool for the challenges you will face later in life. At STS we will try to prepare you the best we can so that you will be able to adapt as easily as possible to your new study environment. STS cannot guarantee that a student will be granted a foreign high school diploma. It is the school boards decision whether they will grant exchange students a diploma. New friends In addition to your classmates at high school, you may also get to know other STS exchange students from Europe, Canada, Australia, South America, the US, South Africa and parts of Asia. You will meet them through area representatives, at school and on STS trips arranged on weekends and during holidays. Getting to know people from other countries and cultures is rewarding and you will see your own existence and way of living through new eyes. You will probably keep in touch with a lot of your international friends for the rest of your life. Your host family As an exchange student with STS you will live in a carefully selected family who are truly interested in international exchange. We have more than a thousand area representatives through out the STS world, who work all year round to find and recruit appropriate host families. Your host family is responsible for you during your exchange and will do everything to make you comfortable and feel at home. You will celebrate family occasions and get to know the extended family and your host families friends. How about experiencing a real Halloween, Thanksgiving and St. Patrick's Day? In many countries, the church is a natural gathering place for both young and old. To start with, life abroad might be a little different to what you are used to, but soon you will feel at home. Our host families are all different. They can live in a house or apartment, with or without children. What they have in common is a great interest in other cultures and a willingness to share their family life. The host family gets, in most cases, no financial compensation but choose to host an exchange student for the pleasure and opportunity to get to know you and your country. And at the same time, getting a chance to show you their country. You can therefore be assured that you are really welcome in your new home. STS students and their families often stay in touch for many years after the exchange year. Many host families enjoy visits from their STS sons or daughters, sometimes with their natural families, years after the exchange experience. ”Mi madre” Brian scores! WHY CHOOSE STS FOR YOUR EXCHANGE? STS has a global network of 15,000 employees, teachers, leaders and volunteers. Our ethics & values have never changed since our creation in 1958 but our educational programmes have been developed over the years to meet the requirements of a growing and ever changing international market. You will be welcomed by your host family at your final destination. ■ STS OFFERS OVER 20 COUNTRIES FOR YOU TO CHOOSE FROM With STS you can choose from over 20 countries in which to study. In France and the USA you can also choose the area or state in which you would like to live. Take a chance and choose where in the world you want to spend your exchange year. ■ PLACEMENT GUARANTEE Once you are accepted on the programme, we guarantee that you will be placed in a host family and school in the country you have chosen. You do not have to choose more than one country. If we cannot accept any more students for the country you have chosen, you will be advised at the time of your pre-application. ■ STS Preparation Course The STS Preparation course (on offer in France, Italy, Canada, the UK, and the USA for our August departure) is the best way to start your programme overseas. It will give you valuable information on your new country, language & culture while offering the great opportunity of sharing your first days overseas with other exchange students. Each Preparation course includes fun group activities and sightseeing trips. See page 16 for more information. ■ EXCLUSIVE STS EUROPEAN TOUR To all STS students on exchange in Europe over the month of June, we offer the opportunity to join the exclusive STS European Tour. The 21-day tour, fully supervised by experienced STS Staff, takes our students to 9 countries and their greatest sights. It is the cheapest and safest way for you to see more of Europe while you are on your exchange programme. See page 18. ■ FULLY REGISTERED AND APPROVED ORGANISATION STS is approved by the CSIET, an American organisation evaluating the quality of student exchange programmes. An organisation that offers exchange programmes without a CSIET approval does not meet quality standards. You must therefore make sure that the organisation you choose is listed by CSIET. You can find all information on CSIET at www.csiet.org. ■ MEMBER OF the new zealand council for InteR cultural EDUCATION STS Student Travel Schools is a inaugural member of the NZCIE, New Zealand Council for Intercultural Education, which aims to pro mote international peace, understanding and goodwill by helping people develop the skills necessary for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world through experiencing life in another country and community. Membership to NZCIE is dependent on being a not for profit reputable international cultural exchange organisation with an office in NZ, being a signatory to New Zealand Ministry of Educations Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of Inter national Students and accepting the NZCIE Principles of Good Practice for Intercultural Exchanges. HOST & GO If you apply to be an exchange student with STS Student Travel Schools and your family hosts a STS student before or after your departure, you will get a discount of up to $1,500.00 off your outbound programme fee. The best way to prepare for your exchange year or semester is for your family to host a student before you go. You and your family will then have the opportunity to discover a new culture and a new language through your new family member, and most importantly to learn more about the feelings and experiences of an exchange student. Hosting discounts only apply for a successful full term of hosting, not claimable should a hosting terminate before the hosting term is complete. FIRST COUNTRY CHOICE With STS Student Travel Schools you only have to choose one country that you would like to go on exchange to and providing you fit the criteria for this country, you have the requried language study for those countries with a language study requirement and fit into the age critera then your First Country Choice is guaranteed. You do need to apply early to get your choice country, some countries have strict close off dates and limits may also apply to certain countries. Apply now and go to your dream country, whether it be Italy, France, Brazil, China or any of our over 20 countries – STS will not ask you to select three countries, STS will send you to the country of your choice.
