Wave Theory The wave theory of radiant energy was advocated by Christian Huygens and is based on these premises. 1. Light results from the molecular vibration in luminous material. 2. The vibrations are transmitted through the ether in wavelike movements (comparable to ripples in water). 3. The vibrations act on the retina of the eye, stimulating the optic nerves to produce visual sensation. The velocity of a wave is the product of its wavelength and its frequency. Electromagnetic Theory The electromagnetic theory was advanced by James Clerk Maxwell and is based on these premises. 1. Luminous bodies emit light in the form of radiant energy. 2. This radiant energy is propagated in the form of electromagnetic waves. 3. The electromagnetic waves act on the retina of the eye, stimulating the optic nerves to produce the sensation of light.
