10. Route the tailpipe such that it is not likely to be<br />

struck when the vehicle is moving. Keep it out<br />

of the approach and departure angles of the vehicle<br />

and above the axle clearance line (Figure<br />

3-6).<br />

11. Make sure a tail pipe deflector will not cause excessive<br />

back pressure or interfere with removing<br />

a spark arresting screen, if so equipped.<br />

CAUTION Excessive back pressure can<br />

cause loss of performance and engine damage.<br />

12. Unless the muffler has an integral spark arrestor,<br />

install a spark screen (Figure 3-7) or other<br />

kind of approved add-on device to comply with<br />

regulations for vehicles driven on federal lands.<br />
