Creating a Child and Youth-Friendly <strong>City</strong><br />
Key Gap(s): Need <strong>for</strong> resources to identify urban design, policies, community<br />
services and processes that will advance <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a “child and youth<br />
friendly <strong>City</strong>”<br />
Recommendations – Short-term:<br />
• Prepare (a) terms <strong>of</strong> reference <strong>for</strong> and commence a process towards developing<br />
policies that will assist in ensuring that child and youth friendliness is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key<br />
objectives pursued in <strong>the</strong> decisions about <strong>the</strong> continuing development and services<br />
delivered by <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong>. The process should:<br />
• Engage <strong>the</strong> community, <strong>City</strong>-based committees, and youth;<br />
• Build on processes that are currently underway in defining and implementing child<br />
and youth friendly objectives; and<br />
• Build awareness <strong>of</strong> existing practices that promote a child and youth friendly <strong>City</strong>.<br />
• Promote <strong>the</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong> “20% by 2010” Campaign with a particular focus on children and<br />
youth.<br />
Recommendations – Long-term:<br />
• Amend <strong>the</strong> Official Community <strong>Plan</strong>, o<strong>the</strong>r plans and appropriate <strong>City</strong> by-laws to<br />
include “child and youth friendly” policies and provisions developed through <strong>the</strong> process<br />
identified in <strong>the</strong> short-term actions and as approved by Council.<br />
• Develop a communication strategy to promote <strong>the</strong> enhanced child and youth policies<br />
and provisions being implemented by <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong><br />
• Implement “child and youth friendly” features in civic facilities and infrastructure<br />
and continue to enhance <strong>the</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> child and youth friendly programs and services.<br />
