Dear friends of water polo! A big welcome on behalf of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg to the 2011 European Masters Water Polo Championships. I am very pleased that the sporting city of Hamburg is a venue for European title competitions. Water polo and Hamburg are natural allies. Water sports – swimming, rowing, sailing and, of course, water polo – are traditionally well established in the city, with its Alster, Elbe and Bille rivers, as we have often seen in recent years. The German National Masters Championships in water polo, for example, have been held here nine times already. The Hamburger Schwimmverband e.V. (Swimming Federation of Hamburg) is the host for this year’s European Masters Water Polo Championships, which will take place in the SV Poseidon club’s outdoor pool in Olloweg, Eidelstedt. This attractive pool complex in green surroundings is excellently suited to the coming event because it is also home to the German first division team SV Poseidon. I hope that everyone will feel at home there, not only the nearly 50 teams and their 1,000 or so athletes, but also the representatives of LEN – the governing body of the European swimming federations, the international swimming federation representatives and all the water polo fans watching. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg has plenty to offer all participants and visitors. In addition to attractive sporting events, we can boast a whole host of cultural attractions. Places of interest, historical attractions, a wide variety of shopping and rich natural surroundings round off a visit to Hamburg. Enjoy the maritime flair of Germany’s second largest city! We are happy to have you here. I hope you enjoy exciting play, lots of great goals and a good time in my home town.
