Supporting Women in Chicago …The Chicago Foundation for Women
Chicago is one of the most diverse and economically prosperous places in the world,
yet just 20 years ago only 3% of philanthropic dollars were going to support the
needs and programs of women.
So in 1984, the Chicago Foundation for Women was started by four local community
leaders. The foundation supports the achievement of social justice through grant
making and advocacy so that all women and girls in Chicago have the opportunity
to achieve their full potential and live in safe and healthy communities.

The Foundation’s core values include gender-specific funding, diversity, accessibility and choice with
their focus on three principles of women’s human rights:
Economic Security
Freedom from Violence
Health
Through advocacy, events, grant funding, leadership councils and coalitions the foundation has influenced
social justice throughout the Chicagoland area. Chicago Foundation for Women has awarded more than
2500 grants totaling $15 million that increase the quality of life for thousands of local women and girls.
This is just one example of the many ways to get involved and support women, family and our Chicago
