Summer term
NOYE’S FLUDDE
On June 5th at 9.00pm on BBC2, a documentary on
Benjamin Britten’s work with children may well feature
some of the work on our production of Britten’s Noye’s
Fludde, which took place last July in the Cathedral as
the final project of our musical partnership with BWS,
Salisbury Cathedral School and six local primary
schools. Parts of the project were filmed and some of
our pupils were interviewed but we have not seen a
preview and so do not know which material was used.
The complete performance of Noye’s Fludde is
scheduled to be shown on BBC4 in the Autumn. (Mrs

Young Enterprise Advisers
The South Wilts Area Board of Young
Enterprise is always eager to recruit men
and women in the workplace, who would be
willing to volunteer an hour of their time,
once a week, to help support Young

Head Girl Team
Many thanks to the outgoing Head Girls: Rhiannon Johnson and
Claire Swienton and Deputy Head Girls, Erika Baker, Caroline
Derry and Frances Markey. They have been an excellent team
and it has been a pleasure working with them. Good luck to the
new Head Girls: Alison Kinghorn and Kate Wilkinson and Deputy
Head Girls, Alice Kirby and Sophie Stevens. We wish them well

Nestlé Cereal Box Tops For Education
This year our school is participating in the box tops for education
scheme. It is a really simple and effective way for us to raise
cash for our school. Simply collect the 10p tokens from the top of
Nestlé cereal packs and send them into the school (end date
March 2005). We will receive a cheque for all the tokens
collected. A collection box is in the library, and all money raised
will go towards new library books. - Keep collecting (Mrs Wood)

Young Enterprise
Gumption and Aphrodite represented South Wilts at the Young Enterprise Area Finals, held at the Guild
Hall on 28 th April, along with teams from Bishops and Godolphin. Each team had already produced a
Company Report. The judges questioned them about this when they visited the Trade Stands
displayed at the Area Finals. Five people from each team then had 10 minutes to give an oral
presentation and all used powerpoint for visual effect. South Wilts did extremely well as Aphrodite were
presented with a shield for Best Company Report and Gumption were Overall Winners.
Gumption and Godolphin (highly recommended at the Area Finals) went on to represent South
Wiltshire at the County Finals which were held on 13 th May. Eight teams were involved from Wiltshire
and each team had to produce a Company Report, a Trade Stand and a Presentation. Improvements
were allowed to be made after feedback from the judges in the Area Finals. There were 12 trophies
awarded on the evening and South Wilts won 5! These were Best Report Shield, HSBC Cup for Best
Over 16, Thames Water Cup for Customer Focus, Best Financial Performance Shield and HTV Trophy
for Overall Winner! Gumption now go on to represent the County at the Divisional Finals (South West
Region) which will be held in Cornwall in June.

Orienteering Success for Alice!!
Alice Butt 9N has returned from her fantastic event in Belgium laden with medals and
wonderful memories. Alice competed in two individual races, (in which she placed 4 th
and 2 nd ) and a ‘goodwill’ event where she was paired with a non-English speaking
partner! Alice said that communicating with her foreign partner was challenging, but
they achieved all their checkpoints and had fun along the way. Alice’s excellent
individual results contributed towards Great Britain taking first place in the World Schools’ Orienteering
team event. Well done Alice.
A BIG thank you to all students who supported the Orienteering Challenge at the end of March and
helped to raise £100 towards Alice’s travel costs. (Mrs Godber)

University Ambassadors’ schemes
The science department has had the opportunity to take part in
the University Ambassadors’ scheme at Southampton by having
a third year chemistry undergraduate, Rachel Storey, joined us in
school for several hours each week during the spring term. Mrs
Herbert's Year 7 class have had additional help with investigative
work, whilst Mrs Nicholls’ Year 8 class have studied rocks as part
of Rachel’s innovative project using the interactive whiteboard.
Year 12 were fascinated by what it’s really like to be a student,
as part of their PSD programme, when Rachel contributed to a
talk on life at University! (Mrs Burns - Cox)
‘BMW’ Point of Sale Display

Congratulations
Claire Swienton entered the Young Geographers of the Year competition
organised by Geographical Magazine. She wrote an essay on Oceans and has
been selected as one of the three finalists in her age category. She is to go to
the Royal Geographical Society on June 2nd when the winners will be
announced.
Claire has been an exceptional geographer all the way through school and has a
place to read geography at Jesus College, Oxford in the Autumn. The geography

Music Department
A Cappella & Senior Choir
A Cappella began the term by singing evensong in Salisbury Cathedral on 22nd April.
The girls sang beautifully and we were, as ever, very grateful to David Halls, the
Cathedral Organist, for his superb accompaniment and to the team of men who sang
with them, giving their time and expertise so generously. The evening was made particularly special by
them being joined by some of our string players in the anthem.
The Senior Choir and A Cappella had been working hard since last term in preparation for our joint
choral concert with St. Edmund’s and Bishop Wordsworth’s Schools in May. We all enjoyed rehearsing
together on a number of evenings and the results proved well worth all the hard work. The choirs jointly
performed four classics from the English choral repertoire accompanied by an orchestra mainly made
up of adults, including many of our instrumental teachers and some South Wilts girls. The choirs each
performed individually as well. More than two hundred and fifty musicians performed to a packed
audience at St. Mark’s Church, where we were made very welcome by Rev. Hawksworth. The evening
was memorable for the wonderful, uplifting musical performances and for the evident enthusiasm
shown by all who took part. Later in May Malcolm Wilkinson and his guitar pupils gave another concert,
following the success of last year’s. They presented a programme rich in variety and styles and one
which was much enjoyed by their audience. (Mrs Poppleton)
Thank you Laura Huckle
We have been very fortunate to have Laura Huckle, a student from Southampton University, working
with us this year. Laura proved a great asset to the department, full of enthusiasm and keen to share
her ideas. She arranged a visit to St Edmund’s for a joint workshop with their year 10 pupils on
technology in dance music. This proved very helpful and enjoyable. We wish Laura every success in

Music Captains
The Music Captains and Prefects: Kate
Coleman, Laura Clutterbuck, Charlotte Ford,
Bridget Hendicott, Helen Picknett, and
Rowena Stiven have recently retired from
their positions. They have been outstanding
in their contributions this year. They have
worked tirelessly, helped with a great range of
organisational tasks, initiated year concerts
for Years 7 , 8 and 9 and engendered great
enthusiasm for practical music making. We
are extremely grateful for all they have done
and wish then very well in the future. The
new Music captains will be: Julie Aherne,
Harriet Dutfield, Hannah Perks and and Kiri

New Singing Teachers
We have been joined this term by two new singing
teachers in response to the great demand for lessons.
Lucy Braga and Meinir Williams have a wealth of
experience between them and are very welcome to the
department.
Art Exhibition & Music Open House
The Art Exhibition and Music Open House will give
everyone a chance to see the product of the very
valuable work our instrumental teachers do with their
pupils, who will be performing around the school.
These will be mainly younger musicians because of
the exam schedule this term and there will be
performances from some of our ensembles. The
Junior Choir will be performing Jonah during the
evening under Mrs. Cameron’s direction. (Mrs

Parents and students are invited to an Art and Music evening on the 13 th of
July 2004 at 7.00 p.m. – 9.00 p.m.
ART DEPARTMENT
An exhibition of current A Level, A/S Level and G.C.S.E art
examination and coursework will be displayed on the evening
of the 13 th July. The A Level art work will be in the gym, A/S art
work in the main hall and the G.C.S.E work in both the art
rooms.
This year, eleven Year 13 students have applied to Foundation
and art related courses. The art department is delighted that
seven students have already secured places – we wish the
remaining four students, who will be interviewed this summer
the best of luck.
Congratulations to Amy McAbendroth, who has gained a
degree place at both Falmouth School of Art and Manchester
University.
A very special “Well Done” to Amy Joslin who has gained a
place at Glasgow School of Art to read for a degree in Fine Art.

Throughout the evening of the 13 th July, the music students will
be performing in a number of rooms, the small and main halls,
022 (the music suite), P9 and others.
The ‘musical’ evening will feature mainly Year 10 and younger
students allowing them the opportunity to perform individually.
However, Junior Choir and a few of our ensemble will also take
part.

SPORTING ACHIEVMENTS - SUMMER TERM
County Doubles Tennis Tournament

All girls were up against very stiff competition but played extremely well. Particular
congratulation go to the U14 pair who came 3rd in their competition and the U19 pair
who were runners up against a very high standard of competition. Well done! (Miss

BASKETBALL FESTIVAL – YEARS 7 & 8
Eighteen keen SWGS basketball players took part in the inaugural Years 7 & 8 Salisbury District
Council Basketball Festival on Wednesday 5 May, at the Five Rivers Leisure Centre.
South Wilts entered an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team from girls, particularly from 8B, who have played regularly in
the Wiltshire Central Venue Basketball League at Tidworth Leisure Centre since the Autumn term.
Both teams acquitted themselves very well especially against St Edmund’s, who played their England
player Jess Brookfield for the whole game against our ‘A’ team, and subbed her on in the final 10
minutes against our ‘Bs’ to secure a win for St Edmund’s. Games against Fisherton Manor were also
very competitive. Final Results were: South Wilts A – 2 nd , South Wilts B – 4 th .

Thirteen of our Year 7 & 8 players are currently attending training at Westwood St Thomas’ in
preparation for the Wiltshire Youth Games on Sunday, 4 th July.

SWIMMING GALA – 2004
Last year South Wilts walked away from the Salisbury Stingrays Schools Freestyle Gala with the Years
7 & 8, and Year 9+ trophies. This year twenty four girls signed up to swim and duly turned up at Five
Rivers Leisure Centre on Tuesday, 18th May. Record entries in the Primary School section forced a
late start to the Secondary School event, but the South Wilts A and B teams were unperturbed and
settled in to win all their heats and ‘friendly’ events. The Year 7 & 8 ‘C’ team swam well and made it
through to the second round. Overall our girls were too strong and too fast even for the polished St
Edmund’s teams.

ATHLETICS – AREA SCHOOLS
As soon as the Summer term began South Wilts students began practising their athletic events not only
during lesson time but also at break and lunch times. Poor weather early in the term delayed the Area
Sport trials but eventually teams were selected and competition began.
Under 17 – Tuesday 18th May
The first major event was the Under 18 Area Sports held at the Salisbury Athletic track on Tuesday
18th May. This twilight meet attracted a good turnout as the late afternoon was fine and warm. South
Wilts acquitted themselves well with outstanding performances from Sarah Greenaway (100m, 200m,
Relay), Rachel Artiss (hurdles, high jump) and Charlotte Vie (hurdles, relay) in particular. South Wilts
Year 10+ snaffled the Under 17 Area Sports Championship trophy by a narrow margin of 3 points,
against old rivals St Edmund’s who have dominated this event for the past 6 years.
Under 15 – Tuesday 25th May
In the Under 15 event Alice Judd 9B captained her team with efficient confidence. SWGS lined up
against St Edmund’s, Upper Avon, La Retraite, Godolphin, Stonehenge, Downton, Westwood St
Thomas, Fisherton Manor, Wilton, St Joseph’s and Cathedral School at the 73 rd Senior Championships.
Noteworthy performances were recorded by Nadine Rowe 9N (200m, 800m, relay), Megan Hollinghurst
8A (100m, long jump, relay), Alice Foster 9E (200m, shot put, relay) and Alice Butt 9N (2 nd 1500m). The
Under 15 team placed second to St Edmund’s .

Our Year 7 team flew home outright winners in the Under 13 category. Hannah Smith 7N, Hannah
Bellingham 7A, Rosie Peters 7N, Mamie Attwell-Thomas 7A and Naomi Goddard 7A were unstoppable
in their respective events. The Year 7’s walked away with the trophy with a comfortable 30 point margin
over Upper Avon, and Naomi Goddard was named ‘Individual Athlete’ of the day. A superb effort

CHAMPIONSHIPS to be held at the Salisbury Athletics Track on Saturday, 12 June 2004:
ENGLISH SCHOOLS TRACK & FIELD CUP
On Thursday, 20th May SWGS entered a Junior girls and an Intermediate girls team in the English
Schools National Cup Championships. This event was held on our school athletics track with schools
travelling from all over the South West to compete. Once again our girls proved to be too strong and too
fast. In the Intermediate section SWGS placed 3 rd to John of Gaunt and Dauntsey’s, but in the Year 7 &
8 championships South Wilts placed first (263), Clarendon (226) and John of Gaunt (217). This event is
particularly enjoyable as competitors are required to compete out of their specialised
events, with field athletes helping out in the relay and sprinters trying their hand at shot
put.
This excellent achievement shows how versatile our junior athletes are. A special THANK
YOU to Mrs MacTaggart for her invaluable help with the team trials and selections, and to
Miss Salen and Miss Copley for their help as Team Managers during the events.
