INDUSTRY - CMA/INTERTANKO REPORT Its Stamford then south to Houston The first is the Connecticut Marine Association's (CMA) Shipping 2007 shipping and trade conference plus its attendant exhibition in its usual home of Stamford, Connecticut, while the second, Intertanko's Houston <strong>Tanker</strong> Event, takes place a week later. Intertanko's Bill Box explained that the date had been picked a long time ago and that the timing had been more positive than negative in that would be participants have said that they would take advantage of both. First, under the banner of 'Adapting to Change - Riding the Dragon', CMA's annual event takes place at the Westin Stamford from 19th-21st March. A new addition this year, given the drive to recruit people into the shipping industry worldwide, is a 'job fair' taking the form of table top displays given by companies looking to hire new people. More than 1,700 visitors are expected from 50 countries attending the conference sessions and visiting the exhibition area. However, the undoubted highlight of each event is the annual Commodore Award presentation, which for 2007 goes to Morten Arntzen, president and ceo of the Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG). This is presented at the gala dinner on Wednesday 21st March. Last year's recipient was Torben Jensen, chairman and ceo of the Clipper Group. The first person to be awarded Commodore status was Ole Skaarup in 1990. Shipping 2007 kicks off on Monday afternoon 19th March when the exhibition opens and the first conference session takes place. Called 'Defining During March two major conventions take place in the US somewhat surprisingly almost on top of one another yet at different ends of the country. Leadership', it will be opened by CMA's president Peter Drakos, a partner in Blank Rome LLP. The moderator will be Per Heidenreich of Heidmar. Bill Gallagher's IRI is sponsoring CMA's first evening cocktail party. The first panel for the session will include Admiral Thad Allen, commandant USCG; Philip Embiricos, director Embiricos Shipbrokers and president designate of BIMCO; Sean Connaughton, maritime administrator, US Department of Transport (MarAd) and Spyros Polemis, chairman ICS, president ISF and chairman and managing director of Seacrest Shipping. The second panel will consist of Intertanko's managing director Peter Swift, ABS's recently appointed president and coo Christopher Wiernicki and Ole Stene, president InterManager and managing director Aboitiz Jebsen Bulk Transport. This will be followed by the opening cocktail reception sponsored by International Registries (IRI). On Tuesday 20th March, the morning session will be split into two distinct forums. One will address the complexity of markets in the 21st Century, while the other will take in the technical and regulatory changes. The moderator of the markets' morning is Jeremy Penn, the ceo of the Baltic Exchange and the panellists will include Peter Sandler, director Louis Dreyfus Commodities; Jonathan Rodriguez-Atkatz, ceo Jacob Stern & Sons; David Morgan, managing director Morgan Stanley; Gilbert Landy, a broker with Pasternak Baum; Robert Curt vice president, SeaRiver Maritime and Ted Petrone, president Navios Corp. As for the regulatory sessions, the moderator will be Clay Maitland, managing partner of IRI. LR's Alan Gavin will present a paper on 'The Politics and Realities of Criminality in Europe: Significant Challenges and Constructive Approaches. Gavin will be followed by Joseph Cox, president and ceo of the Chamber of Shipping of America who will address 'Environmental Compliance: When the Department of Justice is Intent on Jail, how do you avoid the trap?' The next conference addresses KPIs under the stewardship of Svein Sorlie, senior vice president Wilh Wilhelmsen and chairman InterManager's KPI steering committee. He will be joined by Peter Cremers, ceo Anglo-Eastern and Eric Christensen, commander USCG and Tor Svensen, DNV's coo. At lunch, the keynote speech will be given by Bureau Veritas' Bernard Anne. During the afternoon, professor Costas Grammenos of London's City University will moderate on a session devoted to 'Maritime Clusters', which will include panellists such as Michael Hudner, chairman and ceo B&H Management; Ken McLean, director Bahamas Maritime Authority; Stamatis Molaris, president and ceo of Quintana Maritime and Saleem Alavi, business development manager of Dubai Maritime City. Another evening cocktail reception will end the day's affairs coinciding with the Job Fair. Wednesday is another split day with one session (Track 1) looking at the expansion of the Panama Canal, while the other (Track 2) addresses legal issues. The moderator for the Panama Canal session is Ernst Frankel, professor of management, Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Not surprisingly, the panellists include Alberto Aleman Zubieta, the Panama Canal's administrator; Robert West of Global Insight and Alexei Oduber, administrative manager, GAC - Wilford & McKay.
