The parallel conference on
Wednesday morning tackles legal
issues and is co-sponsored by the
US Maritime Law Association
and the Admiralty Committee of

The moderator will be
Raymond Burke Jr, counsellor at
law and partner in Burke &
Parsons, while the first session
looks at the legal loopholes
allowing single hull tankers to
trade after 2010 with James
Power, attorney, Holland &
Knight at the helm. Arrest of
ships will be addressed by
Clive van Aerde, lawyer and
partner with Van Aerde &
Partners and recent
developments in US taxation
will be looked at by Joseph
Gulant, partner Blank Rome.
During the afternoon, delegates
and panellist will discuss
branding - how shipowners
distinguish themselves. The
moderator for this session will be
Brad Berman, president of the
Liberian Registry. The panellists
will include Gary Vogel,
managing director Clipper Bulk
(USA); Kim Ullman, executive
vice president and coo
StenaBulk; Keith Denholm,
commercial director Pacific
Carriers; Paul Gridley, chairman
and ceo US Shipping Partners
and Jean Lemay, senior vice
president Fednav.
In the evening, the whole event
ends on a high when the
Commodore Gala Dinner takes
place at which Morten Arntzen
assumes the title of Commodore
from predecessor Torben Jensen.

This event kicks off on Sunday
25th March with a welcome
reception at the venue - Houston's
Hilton Post Oak Hotel. All day
Monday and on Tuesday
morning, Intertanko will hold its
executive committee meeting,
which is closed to all other than
to committee members.
Past events have drawn anything
from 400-500 people through the
door and there are around 15
exhibitors at this year's event.
For the three day conference,
once again an array of top speakers
has been lined up covering many
subjects, all of which are pertinent
to the tanker industry.
The seminars start on Monday
26th March with three sessions
on the technical issues facing
shipping, such as air emissions
and common structural rules. The
chairman is Intertanko's Dragos
Rauta. His first panel includes
Keith Michel of Herbert
Engineering, Dr Rudolph
Kassinger of DNV Petroleum
Services and Gary Horn of ABS.
The second panel will discuss
chemicals and biofuels with Inge
Steensland's Tina Gilje, ABS'
Philip Rynn, Kinder Morgan's
John Mahon and Dow Chemical's
Dennis Reiswig. Another couple
of panellists have been invited to
lead a debate on the LNG Market,
notably Braemar Seascope's
Debbie Turner and BG LNG
Services' Marc Hopkins.
