Forestry Tasmania’s contribution to the
economy
In 2007/08, the estimated value of wood production from
state forests, based on the price paid by Forestry Tasmania’s
customers for logs delivered “at the mill door” was $252
million. Of this, approximately $182 million (72 per cent)
came from native forests, $12 million (5 per cent) from
hardwood plantations and $58 million (23 per cent) from
softwood plantations. The softwood value represents
the full production figure from state forests (ie includes
Taswood Growers and softwood resources managed by
Forestry Tasmania such as the Strahan plantation).
The estimated final value of wood products produced
in Tasmania from these logs in 2007/08, based on the
best available information on recovery and value of each
product, is $659 million. This underpins the actual value of
the wood and paper product-manufacturing sector, which
produces sales income annually of $1.4 - $1.6 billion to the
Tasmanian economy.
In addition to the revenue from timber sales, some of the
components through which Forestry Tasmania contributes
to the Tasmanian economy are outlined in Table 18.
This shows that in 2007/08 there were 1793 staff and
contractors. While the payroll to staff amounted to $33
million, total payments made to suppliers, contractors and
employees was $189 million.
