Development (MIO-ECSDE)
About: MIO-ECSDE is a federation of Mediterranean Non-Governmental Organisations
(NGOs) active in environment and development issues. It functions as a technical and
political platform and umbrella for NGO intervention in the Mediterranean scene. The
ultimate goal of MIO-ECSDE is to promote Sustainable Development in a peaceful
Mediterranean.
Their current agenda is “Securing a strong Mediterranean dimension in EU and
international Environmental policies and processes.”
MIO-ECSDE also lobbies on climate change: 60
“MIO-ECSDE's on-going efforts concerning Climate Change in the
Mediterranean are linked with those on water, desertification and the loss
of biodiversity. MIO-ECSDE tries to activate Mediterranean NGOs,
governments, etc. on issues directly or indirectly related to climate change
by lobbying and campaigning at all major international and regional
meetings, with emphasis on the impact of climate change on
desertification, strengthening the use of renewable energy resources,
emphasising the urgent need to safeguard the integrity of the water cycle,
the need to halt further loss of wetlands and minimise undesirable effects
on biodiversity.”
European Commission Funding
The European Commission described the work programme that received funding as
follows:
“MIO-ECSDE main activities for 2009 are: networking; capacity building;
drafting, promoting and presenting common NGO policies and positions;
promoting partnerships; raising public awareness, participation and
consensus building; Education for Sustainable Development (ESD);
promoting the cultural dimension of sustainable development; facilitation
of Mediterranean stakeholder networks; publications, etc.”
