Gift Annuity is a Win-Win Situation: Donor and Northeast Health Both Benefit By James Prout, Esq., NEHF treasurer Northeast Health Foundation offers many methods for giving which can provide life income to the donor and a substantial gift to a program or facility of Northeast Health. The charitable gift annuity is one of the simplest income-producing gifts you can make. How does a charitable gift annuity work, you ask? The donor signs an annuity contract with Northeast Health Foundation, stating the size of the initial gift and the percentage for the annual payments. The donor then transfers the assets (cash or stock) in the amount of this initial gift. Northeast Health Foundation then pays the donor a fixed percentage amount, annually, throughout his or her lifetime. Upon the completion of the annuity, the balance remaining is paid over to Northeast Health to be used for one of its programs or facilities as the donor stipulated at the time of the agreement. Recently, a donor to Northeast Health established a gift annuity with $90,000 and received annuity payments throughout his life. Upon the completion of the annuity, a gift was made honoring his wife to support Albany Memorial Hospital. Another annuity donor has designated the remainder from his annuity to benefit the Cancer Treatment Center at Samaritan Hospital. These gifts are win-win situations for both the affiliates of Northeast Health and the donors. The tax advantages of this type of planned gift are as follows: • An income tax deduction is allowed, based on actuarial tables, in the year the annuity is established. • The donor receives an annuity payment for life, based upon the value of the initial gift and the percentage chosen. • The annuity payments are guaranteed obligations of Northeast Health Foundation and are not subject to change or termination during the donor’s lifetime. • At the completion of the annuity contract, Northeast Health Foundation is provided with a generous gift.
