A Message From the Chairman
Dear Friends,
It’s a pleasure
to thank the many
wonderful contributors
to
Northeast Health
and its affiliates.
You are truly
making a difference
at The Eddy, Albany Memorial
and Samaritan hospitals.
Through the generosity of so
many, we recently opened a 10-bed
residential expansion at the Marjorie
Doyle Rockwell Center, renovated the
Slingerland auditorium at Albany
Memorial Hospital, and have continued
to generate funds for the fetal
monitoring units at Samaritan
Hospital. These are just a few of the
many wonderful accomplishments
made possible through the generosity
of our contributors.
The Future of Healthcare is Here
Thanks to a generous $65,000
grant from Verizon Foundation and
the support through member items
from Senate Majority Leader Joseph
L. Bruno, Eddy Visiting Nurse Association
(VNA) and The Heart Program
at Albany Memorial Hospital recently
introduced telehomecare technology
to patients in the Capital Region.
The new technology enables
nurses to make “video visits” to
Thanks to the many individuals

to the success of Cuisine Magic 2001.
Nearly $49,000 was raised to benefit
Eddy Visiting Nurse Association.

We continue on our quest to
educate the community about the
benefits of planned giving. Included
in this issue is one couple’s story on
why they chose gift annuities as their
planned giving vehicle for their gifts
to the Cancer Treatment Center at
Samaritan Hospital.
People often ask me how they can
help. The foundation’s current
fundraising priorities are directed
patients in the comfort of their
homes. Central monitoring units
placed at Eddy VNA and Albany
Memorial electronically connect
with small, lightweight units placed
in the patients’ homes and provide
a live audio and video connection.
Telehomecare provides real-time
pictures of the patients’ overall status,
concerns and compliance with
treatment protocols.
towards expanding our Alzheimer’s
services, support for the critical care
monitoring units at Albany Memorial
and maternal/fetal monitoring units at
Samaritan, and the renovations to the
radiology equipment and facilities at
Samaritan Hospital. If you, or others

Expands
On Wednesday, May 30, the
Marjorie Doyle Rockwell Center
dedicated its 10-bed expansion in
honor of Northeast Health president
and CEO, Craig A. Duncan. The
Craig A. Duncan House will provide
much-needed additional beds for
individuals with memory loss.
The expansion would not have
been possible without significant
contributions from our donors,
including a $175,000 contribution
from an anonymous donor and a
$25,000 gift from the Lewis Family
Foundation for landscaping.
Slingerland Auditorium Renovations
The Slingerland Auditorium
at Albany Memorial Hospital
recently received a facelift thanks
to a gracious gift from Fredericka V.
Slingerland. Renovations included
painting, window treatments, cove
base and moldings.

Cuisine Magic 2001: A Success for Eddy Visiting Nurse Association
The Eddy’s eighth annual culinary
competition and grand tasting
gala, Cuisine Magic 2001, was held at
the Empire State Plaza Convention
Center in Albany on Sunday, April
29. Chefs from eight restaurants
competed at the American Culinary
Federation (ACF) sanctioned event.
Approximately 500 people
attended the event which raised
nearly $49,000 to benefit Eddy
Visiting Nurse Association initiatives,
including the Eddy AIDS Care Team
Program which provides nonmedical,
home-based support services to HIV/
AIDS patients, and the home health
aide career ladder program.

Charitable Gift Annuities - A Preferred Method of Giving
In our fall 2000 issue, James
Prout, Esq., treasurer of Northeast
Health Foundation, wrote about the
benefits of giving through the charitable
gift annuity. With a charitable
gift annuity, the donor signs an
annuity contract with Northeast
Health Foundation, stating the size of
the initial gift and the percentage of
the annual payments. The donor then
transfers the assets (cash or stock) in
the amount of the initial gift.
Northeast Health Foundation
then pays the donor a fixed percentage
amount annually, throughout
his or her lifetime. Upon the completion
of the annuity, the remaining
balance is paid over to Northeast
Health for the program or facility as
stipulated by the donor at the time
of the agreement.
One couple, who wishes to
remain anonymous, recently chose
the charitable gift annuity as their
method of giving to the Cancer
Treatment Center at Samaritan
Hospital. They chose to give to the
center because of the professionalism
and care they experienced there.
“They do such a wonderful job. It’s
a pleasure to go there as a patient -
they never forget that one is a human
being. They also go out of their way
to make the spouse feel comfortable
and informed.”

because it certifies that the charity
will benefit and provides donors with
a guaranteed income for the rest of
their lives. Donors also benefit from
the tax deduction the year the annuity
