Charitable Gift Annuities - A Preferred Method <strong>of</strong> Giving<br />
In our fall 2000 issue, James<br />
Prout, Esq., treasurer <strong>of</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />
<strong>Health</strong> Foundation, wrote about <strong>the</strong><br />
benefits <strong>of</strong> giving through <strong>the</strong> charitable<br />
gift annuity. With a charitable<br />
gift annuity, <strong>the</strong> donor signs an<br />
annuity contract with Nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />
<strong>Health</strong> Foundation, stating <strong>the</strong> size <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> initial gift and <strong>the</strong> percentage <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> annual payments. <strong>The</strong> donor <strong>the</strong>n<br />
transfers <strong>the</strong> assets (cash or stock) in<br />
<strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> initial gift.<br />
Nor<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>Health</strong> Foundation<br />
<strong>the</strong>n pays <strong>the</strong> donor a fixed percentage<br />
amount annually, throughout<br />
his or her lifetime. Upon <strong>the</strong> completion<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annuity, <strong>the</strong> remaining<br />
balance is paid over to Nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />
<strong>Health</strong> for <strong>the</strong> program or facility as<br />
stipulated by <strong>the</strong> donor at <strong>the</strong> time<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> agreement.<br />
One couple, who wishes to<br />
remain anonymous, recently chose<br />
<strong>the</strong> charitable gift annuity as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
method <strong>of</strong> giving to <strong>the</strong> Cancer<br />
Treatment Center at Samaritan<br />
Hospital. <strong>The</strong>y chose to give to <strong>the</strong><br />
center because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism<br />
and care <strong>the</strong>y experienced <strong>the</strong>re.<br />
“<strong>The</strong>y do such a wonderful job. It’s<br />
a pleasure to go <strong>the</strong>re as a patient -<br />
<strong>the</strong>y never forget that one is a human<br />
being. <strong>The</strong>y also go out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir way<br />
to make <strong>the</strong> spouse feel comfortable<br />
and informed.”<br />
This is <strong>the</strong> couple’s second gift<br />
Joan Gross, Key Bank<br />
vice president <strong>of</strong> cash<br />
management (center),<br />
presents Jo-Ann<br />
Costantino, CEO <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong> Eddy and executive<br />
vice president <strong>of</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />
<strong>Health</strong>, and Craig<br />
Duncan, president and<br />
CEO <strong>of</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />
<strong>Health</strong>, with <strong>the</strong> final<br />
payment <strong>of</strong> Key Bank’s<br />
$75,000 pledge to <strong>the</strong><br />
capital campaign for<br />
<strong>the</strong> Marjorie Doyle<br />
Rockwell Center.<br />
annuity to <strong>the</strong> Cancer Treatment<br />
Center. <strong>The</strong>y prefer <strong>the</strong> gift annuity<br />
because it certifies that <strong>the</strong> charity<br />
will benefit and provides donors with<br />
a guaranteed income for <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir lives. Donors also benefit from<br />
<strong>the</strong> tax deduction <strong>the</strong> year <strong>the</strong> annuity<br />
is established.<br />
