A Message from the Chairman 

Community members who 

accept the invitation—and chal- 

lenge—of serving on the Foun- 

dation’s governing board hold 

Northeast Health’s mission close 

to their hearts: providing a high 

quality, accessible continuum of 

healthcare, supportive housing and community ser- 

vices. As we enter a new and challenging fiscal year, 

we want to reflect on the great efforts and achieve- 

ments of 2006 and herald the beginning 

of 2007. 

The past year has seen the completion of the 

renovation of the Samaritan Hospital lobby, thanks 

to very generous donations from the Samaritan 

Hospital Auxiliary, the Robison family, Mrs. Joan 

Porcelli and others. Today, the Robison Lobby, 

including the gift shop, presents a beautiful, tranquil 

and welcoming entrance to Samaritan. 

The Foundation initiated the first-ever network- 

wide Northeast Health employee fund campaign. 

Fourteen-hundred employees, representing 

34 percent of the total workforce, participated, 

realizing more than $113,000 in donations. The suc- 

cess of this campaign demonstrates the commitment 

Northeast Health employees have to the mission 

and vision of the organization—they believe in 

what they’re doing here. 

Albany Memorial Hospital recently kicked off 

the first phase of a two-year emergency department 

and lobby renovation project, with phase I slated 

for completion in May 2007. The ultimate goal is 

to “right-size” the department to accommodate 

growth in patient volumes. 

The Cancer Treatment Center at Samaritan 

Hospital celebrated its 25th anniversary in Janu- 

ary. Because Northeast Health recognizes the long 

journey, sometimes sad, many times hopeful, that 

cancer patients and their families travel day by day, 

the organization engaged the nationally recognized 

Oncology Resource Consultants to research unmet 

needs in our region. As a result of that study, North- 

east Health will create a comprehensive oncology 

center on Hoosick Street in Troy, in a free-standing 

building, offering a broad array of services for the 

person and family living with cancer. 

Cancer Treatment Center Celebrates 25 Years 

New Patient-Centered Facility to Reinvent Cancer Care 

Few—if any—families have not been touched 

by cancer. It is a word that often brings fear to 

countless patients and members of their families. 

Samaritan Hospital has been a leader in cancer 

care for 25 years, and in January celebrated that quar- 

ter century of service to patients with a recognition 

event, held in the Krause Center, to announce North- 

east Health’s vision for the future of cancer care. 

Northeast Health will build a freestanding, 

comprehensive cancer treatment center, slated for

construction at the site of the former Grand Union 

supermarket on Hoosick Road in Troy. Under one 

roof, cancer patients and members of their families 

will find not only the best medical care and state- 

of-the-art technology to help fight the disease, they 

will also discover complementary care, such as 

nutritional counseling, genetic counseling, psycho- 

social support, and evidence-based complementary 

therapies, such as massage, acupuncture and more. 

Thanks to three major leadership gifts, an- 

nounced at the 25 th anniversary celebration, the 

new center is well on its way to becoming a reality. 

Senator Joseph Bruno (R-Brunswick) has as- 

sisted Northeast Health in receiving a $2.5-million 

state grant to support the center. Announced last 

fall, the grant will assist in the first phases of con- 

structing the center. Senator Bruno’s vision is that 

the number of people who will be helped at the 

center will be expanded. 

The Robison Family has committed $1 million 

to the project. Longtime supporters of Samaritan 

Hospital, the Robisons have always championed 

patient-centered care and a healing environment 

for every Samaritan and Eddy project. Their phi-

While The Eddy has long been known for its su- 

perior skilled nursing facilities, it is now planning to 

introduce a revolutionary new approach to skilled 

care at our Cohoes campus. The Eddy is planning 

to change the definition of a nursing home with the 

Green House concept, intended to provide an envi- 

ronment where elders can engage in meaningful 

life activities, thereby eliminating some of the 

issues that may arise in skilled nursing facilities. 

A caring community is measured by its com- 

mitment to provide for its citizens. Northeast 

Health provides quality healthcare services that 

improve and sustain the health of residents in the 

Capital District and beyond. Our goal is to build 

a stronger foundation for healthcare across our 

service area, and, with your continuing help, we 

will reach that goal.

Campus of Samaritan Hospital.

as a result of cancer, donated $250,000 in her

The words “nursing” and 

“home” are words of comfort 

and support. Yet when these 

words are combined, they can 

convey a wide range of conflict- 

ing emotions. And, while The 

Eddy has long been known for 

its superior skilled nursing facilities, it now is plan- 

ning to introduce a revolutionary new approach 

to how an elder can continue to enjoy life, even 

when there is a need for considerable support in 

performing activities of daily living. 

Called the “Green House,” this revolutionary 

new approach focuses on re-creating a home-like 

setting with the medical support provided by tradi- 

tional skilled nursing facilities. This philosophy of 

elder care enables residents to receive the care they 

need without the medical aspects of their needs 

becoming the sole focus of their existence. 

Every resident will have a private room with 

a private bathroom. Rooms will surround a large 

living area called “the hearth,” complete with 

fireplace, open kitchen with breakfast bar and a 

large family-style dining table. The relationship of 

the private rooms to the hearth allows the elders to 

easily control their own level of social engagement 

by closing their own door for privacy, opening their 

door to observe activities in the hearth, or joining 

the group and engaging in activities.

and the center’s indoor healing garden and 

courtyard will be named in her honor. 

To date, the cancer center has received $4.1 

million in funding, with a goal of $6 million. 

The entire project is expected to cost $19 million. 

Construction will begin next year.

Employee Fund Drive an Outstanding SUCCESS! 

How could it happen? How could we reach 

more than 34 percent — or 1,423 employees — who 

are scattered across a major healthcare network? 

Participation was the key … 

The 2006 Employee Fund Drive, “Together, 

we keep our community healthy,” began Septem- 

ber 14 and ran through November 22. The first 

system-wide employee campaign emphasized 

participation. The theme for this year’s campaign 

focused on the system’s capital efforts and annual 

fund, but also gave employees the opportunity 

to designate donations. 

Northeast Health is comprised of unique affili- 

ates spread out at various locations throughout the 

Capital Region. What works in the patient care divi- 

sion at Albany Memorial or Samaritan Hospitals, for 

example, may not work in The Eddy. In response to 

each affiliate’s special needs, the Foundation formed 

an employee campaign committee, comprised of 21 

team leaders from across the system to set the pace 

and unite the system. Affiliates were divided into 

teams and a captain was recruited for each. Team 

captains solicited employees within their respective 

departments for their participation and provided 

a sense of team and support of their area.

$113,000 —what a difference this can make! This 

represents the commitment of employees at North- 

east Health as they continue to enhance the lives 

of people in the community. 

The Foundation sponsored a celebration event 

in December to thank all who participated in the 

campaign. Those who attended had the chance 

to “make your own sundae,” all on the same day 

throughout the system. All shifts had the opportu- 

nity to participate, again enabling Northeast Health 

employees to feel united.

Culinary Delights Abound at Cuisine Magic 2007 

Delightful delicacies and tantalized tastebuds 

were the order of the day as the Northeast Health 

Foundation and the Eddy Visiting Nurse Associa- 

tion presented the 14 th annual Cuisine Magic 

event on March 11. 

Held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albany, 

Cuisine Magic featured 11 prominent area chefs 

who displayed their creativity and, well, magic 

with menus. Senator Joseph L. Bruno (R-Troy), 

was the honorary chairman of the event, while 

Liz Bishop, news anchor of WRGB/CBS 6, 

served as mistress of ceremonies. 

More than 430 people attended the event, 

pleasing their palates with the creations of 12 chefs 

from 11 area restaurants, topped off by luscious 

desserts provided by the Old Daley Inn.

Albany Memorial Hospital to Expand Emergency Room 

Enhanced, Patient-Centered Emergency Medicine 

The Emergency Depart- 

ment at Albany Memorial 

Hospital was designed to 

handle 13,000 annual 

emergency visits. However, 

as the center for emergency 

medicine located at the 

crossroads of two major 

interstate highways (I-787 

and I-90), the hospital has 

seen double-digit growth in emergency visits yearly. 

To accommodate the need, the hospital has 

begun a $14 million emergency room expansion 

project, noted with a formal groundbreaking cer- 

emony held on March 1 in the hospital’s lobby. 

The new emergency room has a number 

of goals, including: 

• Rightsizing the department to plan 

for future volume 

• Adding a major resuscitation room 

• Improving access for ambulances 

• Adding more triage rooms 

• Designing several rooms that can be configured 

as isolation, decontamination and collection of 

evidence (connected with physical assault) areas 

• Re-aligning/expanding the main lobby 

• Instituting a bedside registration process to 

streamline entry of patient information 

and admission 

• Adding a private family conference area, as well 

as privacy in all treatment rooms 

The hospital will also add an “ER Express” 

suite. This service allows treatment of acute emer- 

gencies by one of the emergency department teams, 

and minor urgent needs by another team. This 

approach decreases waiting time for patients. 

Sarah Vogel, MD, medical director of the Albany 

Memorial Emergency Department, notes with pride 

that 100 percent of the physicians at the hospital 

are board-certified in emergency medicine. 

Ride the Elephant to the Adirondacks 

How can a white elephant translate into a trip 

to the Adirondacks for residents of the Eddy Ford 

Nursing Home? 

The answer is when a successful “white el- 

ephant” sale raises approximately $1,500 to help 

support a trip to Camp Dippikill in Warrensburg, 

NY. Last year’s trip took place on August 23-24; nine 

residents stayed overnight, while four came 

for the day. 

Held on the campus of the Eddy-Ford Nursing 

Home, the white elephant sale not only helped to 

raise money for the residents’ trip, it also was a 

lot of fun for those who came. 

“This sale helps residents stay connected to 

the community,” notes James (Jaimy) Farnan, vice 

president and administrator of Eddy Ford Nursing 

Home. “Past employees participate every year.

“Nobody wakes up in 

the morning saying, ‘Well, 

today I’d like to visit the 

emergency room at Albany 

Memorial Hospital,’” Dr. 

Vogel said at the ground- 

breaking ceremony. “But 

when they find themselves 

in the position to need to 

go—always a stressful position — we will 

make it much less stressful, and often 

downright pleasant.”

They seem to have a strong connection with 

the residents.” 

Family members of residents, staff members 

and members of the community donated goods 

to the sale. Hannaford, Wal-Mart, Stewart’ s and 

Applebees sponsored the event. For the first 

time this year, the Cohoes Auxiliary held a 

successful bake sale. 

The trip itself provides an exciting adventure 

for a small group of residents who spend a night in 

the Adirondacks. Laurie Albigese, social worker at 

Eddy Cohoes Rehabilitation Center and Eddy Ford 

Nursing Home, first experienced this kind of trip 

when she worked at a group home in New Mexico. 

“I thought, ‘Why not try something similar 

here?’,” she explains. She approached the State 

University of New York at Albany, owners of Camp 

Dippikill. As a SUNY alumna, Albigese was 

eligible to rent the camp for the two days necessary 

to make the trip a reality. 

“Residents who go on the trip can play cards, 

horseshoes, relax, stay up and talk —there is no 

schedule to follow,” she says. “They roast marsh- 

mallows, read books outside. Its very relaxing.” 

Some residents come for the day and stay 

from 11 am to 8 pm, while some stay overnight, 

for a total of 9-15 resident participants. 

“Staff is very excited about this trip,” Albigese 

says. “We have a system for taking the residents, 

and we’re perfecting it all the time. When the 

residents come back, they talk about it for weeks. 

It’s just wonderful. We couldn’t do it without the 

support of the community through the white 

elephant sale.”

Samaritan Unveils Beautiful New Lobby 

A celebration was held on Friday, November 

3 to mark the completion of Samaritan Hospital’s 

lobby renovation. The project, which kicked off 

The Porcelli family in front of the new water-wall 

honoring the memory of Dr. Lawrence Porcelli. 

in February 2006, included the relocation of the 

Corner Shop and features a beautiful water-wall 

and a new donor recognition wall.

people often choose a charitable gift annuity. 

It is a contract between you and our charitable 

foundation, the Northeast Health Foundation, 

to pay you a fixed income for life.

The quarterly payments to you are based on rates 

recommended by the American Council on Gift 

Annuities. They are determined at the time you 

make your charitable gift. Examples at the time 

this was prepared for a single life (annuities can

Jewels in the Night - Patient Care Gala 2007 

More than 500 people attended the Foundation’s 

annual Gala 2007, held January 13 at the Albany Marriott 

— and helped raise more than $134,000 for Samaritan 

and Albany Memorial Hospitals. 

The Foundation honored Isidro M. Bulatao, MD 

(Albany Memorial), David C. Coletti, MD (Samaritan), 

J. Barker Houle (Samaritan), and M. Bernadette 

Mayersohn (Albany Memorial). 

Each hospital will receive an 

equal share of the event’s proceeds.

Samaritan Hospital plans to use its portion to sup- 

port the new comprehensive cancer treatment center. 

Albany Memorial Hospital will use its share to renovate 

and expand the emergency department to accommodate 

a rapidly growing patient volume. The AMH emergency 

room is also being transformed into the hospital’s new 

front entrance for inpatient stays and subsequent 

outpatient visits.
